I had the chai latte with soy and my partner had the decaf vanilla latte with almond milk. Both were made to perfection. The vegan zucchini bread is the best! Not being a coffee diva, I don't really care if the roast tastes this way or that--I'm a tea drinker at heart. For $2.50, I was served a large Earl Grey that hit the spot. Now, real tea aficionados want their tea loose leaf and steeped in a container, then poured in a cup...mine was hot water through a tea bag into a pint glass (a first). I randomly chose this place to meet a friend. I was in need of a space, so hubs could dissertate​ in a quiet corner close enough to coffee if the mood struck him, while I went off to enjoy the company of a friend I haven't seen in about a year. This is kind of a perfect space. Everyone seemed happy, and thoughtful and kind, and sometimes hungry as many people who seem to stop in during a weekend afternoon are actually on their way up to Crow's Nest. Be cautious, this place can fill up pretty quickly, so you'll want to be careful about your timing. 1 PM​ on Saturday wasn't awful bad, but as more people start their weekends, it can fill up in the blink of an eye. You'll have a mixture of soon-to-be-called Crow's Nest patrons and people trying to get some work down with a delicious cuppa something. While there, one of the mixers kind of went crazy, but it brought me back down to earth and my friend and I had a good laugh at how unbothered the majority of the patrons were. Hubs offered me a cup of latte, caramel - I believe - and it was delicious. I'll definitely be going back in the near future, I'm excited to try some of the baked goods, and maybe even go upstairs for once. read more

Pretty fab coffee shop and bakery! The space has got the indie coffee shop thing on lock. Flyers from local events, meetings, etc, serving fair trade coffees, live music on the regular, exposed brick, funky colored walls. As someone who totally digs this type of scene I was pleased greatly. Their formal restaurant upstairs, the Crow's Nest, serves their bread which you can buy in loaf form at the coffee shop here. They also have a variety of other tasty looking snacks but since I had just gorged myself upstairs I had to sadly pass. Lots of seating in the space that didn't seem to crowded (even though the Crow's Nest upstairs was packed). Looks like an ideal place to pull up a chair, a cup of coffee, a little baked nugget, and a good book or your laptop to get some work done. I just cruised through to pick up some extra banana bread for my drive home to Ann Arbor so I can't really talk too much about all the products but I was drooling over the bakery case and could see myself sitting here a spell when I return in the future! I just moved to Kalamazoo. And some friends told me about this place. So what did I do? I checked it out of course! I love coffee. And I have to say this place makes some good coffee. You aren't breaking the bank at the same time. I got a good size cup of coffee for under $3. That beats crappy Starbucks by a long shot! Not to mention if you tell them you're going to stay there and have your coffee (or whatever you get) they put your drink in a actual mug. This may be no big to some people. But being from a small town naturally. This makes the larger city seem more like home. In addition to that though. The all around feel of the place is so unique. It has character. Not like someone went out and bought a bunch of stuff from ikea to decorate the place. Real art though, urban, and unique. It's not a huge place. But just sitting there. Even if you're alone... It's hard to compare Fourth Coast to any other coffee place. It's not Starbucks. It's not trying to be. In fact, anyone in there would be insulted if you found something that was similar aside from the fact that they serve coffee. In the mid 90's, like many people here, this was my hangout. I was that teen with the dark lipstick and occasionally fishnets that sat broodingly in the corner with my friends smoking clove cigarettes under the drop-ceiling and the rattle of the smoke-eaters. The smoke is gone, the ceiling is higher and the crowd is a bit more mixed, but the coffee is still killer. I have lived in a few places and traveled to several more, but I have yet to find a single place that can make a double mint mocha like Fourth Coast. Anytime someone from out of town comes to visit me for the first time, this is our first stop. I love that it is pretty much accessible to anyone now. I have seen some reviews here suggesting that older people should keep away, but I don't think that is really true. If you are someone who is open to people and experiences, this is definitely your place. Do some of the employees and customers have dye in their hair that is not conventional? Sure. So do a lot of little kids now. I'm not really sure that affects the coffee. The baristas at this place have always been serious about coffee and not typically the fake-friendly Starbucks type people you get elsewhere. They aren't rude though. They are pleasant and totally willing to help advise you on a drink (although if it's really busy in there, it might not be the best time to ask about seven different things on the menu). Think of this place like a neighborhood bar. They have been around forever and have a solid customer base. They are in a neighborhood that requires them to put up with a lot of crap on and off during their shift (not that it is bad, but there are some characters in the vicinity). They want to make you a good cup of coffee and they are frequently busy. Idle chit chat isn't really their forte. This place does kind of have a hipster thing going on overall now, but as I said, I am not a hipster and I don't really feel out of place here. It's just not your typical Midwest experience in terms of everyone talking to you. I think the reviews complaining about the environment that way are reflecting that. The Crows Nest upstairs has great food. The counter downstairs also has amazing baked goods with some vegan options. Really though, the baristas ARE nice and helpful, the other customers generally keep to themselves, the coffee is unparalleled anywhere in town, and it's a great place to just sit and chill for a while on the wifi. read more
