I had my first Sweetwater doughnut in 2010 and have been hooked ever since. My husband and I came in to get a half dozen doughnuts and a juice each. We got a Carmel Apple doughnut, a peanut butter cup doughnut, a glazed doughnut, a Boston cream doughnut, and two s'more doughnuts. We would honestly travel to Kalamazoo just for the amazingness that is this doughnut shop. We were a little slow to ordering because we hadn't come in for a few years but the employee helping us was patient. The half dozen doughnuts were $8.49 and our entire order was about $13, which for specialty doughnuts is not bad. We will definitely be back. read more

While on roadtrips, my favorite thing to do is try new donut chops. Sweetwaters had great reviews and I can see why. The prices are insanely affordable half a dozen donuts were $7.99. I finally was able to see where the magic happens in Kalamazoo! Sweetwater's Donut Mill is open 24 hours and near Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University. I heard this is a student and local's favorite location. There are two locations in Kalamazoo and one in Battle Creek. I was amazed with the size of my Cinnamon Roll!!! Sweetwater's never disappoints. The bake is consistent, the variation of donuts offered are incredible. We stop and grab them for the staff at Let's Play Soccer every Saturday morning and also get them for the staff at my employer. Something for everyone. The service is always kind and quick. Off the top of my head- I'm counting over twenty different donut flavors including a flavor of the week. Also- DON'T MISS the annual batch of Bell's Oberon made right here in KZOO! Oh my goodness, these donuts are GIANT. My husband got an Apple fritter and it was as big as his head and my Bavarian filled long John was about 10 inches long. The staff were so awesome, as soon we said it was our first time, they laughed, welcomed us and told us to take our time, which we definitely needed with just how many options there were. It felt like an old school bakery, with pastries on shelves on the wall behind the counter which was a glass display case. We were also able to watch one of the employees on the right side of the store boxing up an order behind the counter, not in the back where they wouldn't have customer interactions. The sun hadn't come up yet when I walked in to grab a dozen donuts. When I opened the door, I was met with a colorful glow and almost a fog of powdered sugar in the air. Then rows and rows of donuts. This place is the willy wonka of donuts. They don't have ordinary or bland donuts. They have New York cheese cake, Carmel apple, pumpkin, and more The clerk was kind enough to entain my stupor as I stood and stared at the donuts. I think I disassociated in bliss. Was it 5 min? An hour? He woke me out of my coma with an expert and kind questioning that made me sure he encountered this daily. Now we know why the drive-thru was so long. I tried the Carmel apple donuts, which was topped with nuts. Unfortunately, that made it a mess as I ate it, and little nuts popped off with each delicious bite. I went on a road trip to Kalamazoo and had to stop by after reading all of the amazing reviews. And I'm so glad I did! The shop is a classic, casual donut shop with lots of seating! As soon as I walked in, I was shocked by the many different flavors and types of donuts. They have fritters the size of heads and flavors like caramel apple! I unfortunately did not get the name of the staff that helped us, but he was super friendly and patient! I was even more surprised that half dozen donuts was only $8! If you want to make your coworkers happy, just stop at Sweetwater's on your way back to Grand Rapids from Firekeepers casino and grab a dozen to share the next day. At least, that's what Nate and I have done several times over the years! He's from Kalamazoo so he introduced me to this place years ago. I am generally not a huge donut person but I always get one at Sweetwater's - either a strawberry cheesecake or a Boston cream. They are pretty big and quite inexpensive, plus they are open 24 hours (at least pre-covid times). I much prefer yeast donuts to cake donuts and especially at Sweetwater's - I've found their cake donuts to be a little dry. Either variety is best on the day it's purchased, but I've been known to have a donut snack over the next couple of days after buying a box. Service was with a smile. I'm not sure if it was because they we're laughing at us for spending $25 on the absolute worse donuts we've ever had. ( Actually the clerk was just nice) But the donuts were horrible to put it mildly. I couldn't even get little kids to eat them! Holy cow, it seemed like they didn't charge us for everything we ordered, but they actually did. The beverages were like the machine kind. Like machine made french vanilla and hot chocolate. I am from Los Angeles and if you hear of delicious donuts, you would be ready to pay several bucks for it. At Sweetwater, we got a dozen for about $10! There is a plethora of choices, from plain or just glazed to some pretty fantastical creations (i.e., recent shark week donut, with blue frosting and gummy sharks and their poor prey...I mean red fish). They are ok. Homemade- which is rare. Service is fairly mediocre. Not bad- but definitely not the service I grew up on and came to expect from the Battle Creek location. Donuts are decent. Each of the donuts, muffins, fritters, and cinnamon rolls look more sweet and delicious than the next. My family and I got a 6 pack plus an apple fritter and still spent only $8-ish dollars. What a deal! We got a wide variety as you can see. The favorites were the Apple Fritter and the NY Cheesecake donut (it didn't taste like cheesecake but it was delicious). But honestly they were all amazing. Also when you go, ask for Shay. She was super friendly. She went in back to get us the freshest donuts for each that we picked, and we didn't even ask for that. The fruit cake donuts are the best! Blueberry, strawberry, and cherry! Simple, moist, and divine! The fruit fritters are also very delicious and quite large -you get what you pay for! Pretty tasty donuts, though they are HUGE. Sweetwater's got voted best donuts in all of Michigan, so of course I had to stop by this weekend when visiting friends in Portage. We got a variety to taste but my favorite was the apple pie donut, it had an apple filling and nuts on top. Some of the cheesecake ones my friends got were very good too. Their cinnamon rolls and non-donut treats are also huge, and looked very yummy in the display case. I'd come back here again for donuts when next in town. read more

Sweetwater's is the first 24-hour drive-thru doughnut shop that I've been to, and it did not disappoint! The doughnuts that we (my boyfriend and I) got were absolutely delicious! If you go, I would highly recommend getting their Dutch Crumb doughnut; it was so soft and just the right amount of sweetness. Their drive-thru option is great, especially right now with everything going on. If you get anxious while ordering or don't know what you want and you want to use the drive-thru, then I would highly recommend checking out their online menu before you go. If you do this, keep in mind that they might have some doughnuts in-store that aren't listed online, so be sure to keep one or two spots open on your list. I grew up eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the south and never thought any doughnuts would rival my KK affection...until I ate my first Sweetwater doughnut. In this trying year, sometimes you need to just go back to the things that make you happy when you need them- and for me, nothing reminds me of my happiest days in the dorms up at Western Michigan University than a fresh, wonderful box of Sweetwater's best. I mean, literally, you cannot go wrong with most anything that comes out of this place: you have your doughnuts, that come in seemingly every variety of flavor under the sun, like plain cake, fruit, cream-stuffed, jelly-filled, all the way up to ones that might make you think you're eating a candy bar for breakfast! I also have to give this place an amazing shout-out for being the only donut place we know of that does a plain sugar-dusted donut instead of only having a sugar-cinnamon mix- which is pretty much my sister's absolute favorite donut. My niece, on the other hand, loves their cinnamon rolls- which are about as big as her head. I mean, one of these has to equal about four of the ones you get in the store bakery, and it certainly tastes better, too! I don't know if they're still doing such a large selection what with the blasted pandemic still ongoing, but this place has two things that make it very easy to plot what you want to get, and then actually get- 1) An online menu that shows you what varieties are available. (I'm hoping beyond hope we haven't missed pumpkin this year...) You can go on the website and figure out how many you want, and which ones to order. (I'm not allowed to do the ordering or the buying- I just usually grab everything that looks good!) 2) A drive-through window, so if you don't want to risk going inside because of COVID, you can just hit the drivethrough and let them know what donuts you want. I ended up with a New York Cheesecake and an Apple Crumble, and both seemed to just hit the spot as far as flavor- these aren't like the store donuts that seem to come with a pound of overly-sugary frosting on them and in them. The NY Cheesecake actually tastes like cheesecake; and the Apple Crumble actually has apple pie filling in it- at least I think it's apple pie filling- but whatever it is, it's tasty and wonderful and just writing this review makes me want to go get another box for breakfast- I mean, yeah, it's after midnight, that makes it breakfast time, yeah? Then again... here's the sheer wonderful thing: Sweetwater's is open 24 hours a day, inside and out. It was a popular place to study and work on projects back during my days at Western. Any time of the day or night, that craving hits, you can go get a donut.
