    Miserable over our lousy care!
    Elizabeth Q.

NEVER AGAIN will I ever bring my dearly loved pet to this practice. Been taking my two dogs here for over a year and I I had an asap appointment for my chihuahua who arrived in good condition and left absolutely miserable! I asked the tech for something to ease her pain and calm her down while I was pushed out the door and I got no answers! I drove home with a crying, shaking, in pain dog on my lap, called the office mid-trip and was on hold until I arrived home, had to turn around to take her back for a shot to give her relief over an inflamed vulva. Dr. Lempke saw her for five minutes and didn't come back into the treatment room to give me any information about what was going on with her and was not interested in answering any of my questions about what was wrong with her, I know NOTHING about her care and treatment, got no discharge instructions, NOTHING! I was sent home with a steroid and an antibiotic and a miserable little dog. SHAME ON YOU! $200 for totally crappy care! I have two beloved dogs and they are done at this establishment.

I have took my Pug to Dr. Hartzen for 13 years before she passed away this winter. I have NEVER SEEN SUCH A GENTLE, COMPASSIONATE Vet (and I have been to a lot of other animal hospitals in town). My Pug loved Dr. Hartzen's exam, which seemed like part through exam and part massage). He was always very cost-conscious in ordering tests. My Pug liked going to Fox Animal Hospital so much that if I just said Dr. Hartzen's name, she would get so excited and head toward the car! Also, she was terrible about having at her nails trimmed, but the techs always found ways to distract her (it seemed like a 3 person intervention: 1 to hold Fern, one to distract her and 1 to trim nails). In all the years they never gave up on her. They always really seemed happy to care about her welfare and that she have a stress-free experience. Also, since Dr. Fox has left, I have noticed that the exam rooms are immaculate, and phone staff is very helpful. We now have a new Pug puppy, and Dr. Hartzen was very honest about potential problems he noticed when we went for initial exam. He it truly an outstanding Vet!! And the practice as a whole is excellent. Additionally, Dr. Hartzen has a great referral network ( he is very picky about the Specialists he recommends), if your dog needs special services. I would never go anywhere else.!

My first year here was meeting Natalie, who I really liked but my dog LOVED. She wasn't there this time around but Em was. Em is professional, detailed and informative in messages, so I know what to prepare for before and after vaccines and tests. For the past three years, I just assumed she was not particularly a dog person because I'd never seen her greet any of the dogs or even look in their direction, but she immediately came around to scoop up this white Lab puppy (paws so ginormous that it's sure to be a big dog). To my surprise, the other lady who often comes out to take the leashes and guide dogs into the exam room for shots immediately picked up the white puppy to weigh it and carried it into the exam room. This was surprising to me because the latter lady can sometimes seem a little cold and mechanical. In all fairness, she did smile at me when she saw me THIS time. (I don't know her name.) She seemed a little more relaxed, which eased my mind. My dog did pull away to avoid going in the door with her, and I started to rise but the vaccinations have to be done so I stayed in my seat (but staring at the door). A couple minutes later, my dog came barreling out, which I kinda chuckled about. According to that lady (I don't know her name), my dog was good. I looked down skeptically but still smiled at this black ball of energy. It was interesting to see the vet (Mark Primiano) not come out at all. The last two vets came out to tell me about the visit, give feedback on my dog's weight and a few other tips. I didn't even know who the vet was this time. (The only reason I know his name is because it's on the paperwork.) Then another dog (muscular and brown and gorgeous) came in on a choke chain and was barking almost the entire time, which made my own dog bark (who hadn't barked at three other dogs, including the puppy). The vet came out BOTH times to give feedback to the pet owners of the puppy and the barking dog, and still acted like I was invisible. For this reason, I could do without him. If he's going to come out to give feedback, do so with all the pet owners. Overall, though, I'd still give this a 4.5 out of 5 star visit because Em was helpful (per usual), Sophie (the other person at the front desk) was friendly to me and tried to win over my dog (who decided to be shy post-shots and hide behind my legs with her head poking through) twice. She did tippy toe toward the owner of the puppy to sniff her hands later on, and then zoomed right back under my legs. (Shy again.) I thought that was nice of Sophie (and the puppy owner, who I don't think works there but Em possibly knew beforehand) to do because it makes the Tree House visits that much easier. When my dog likes the people, it's a breeze to go inside. (She's almost dragging me down the street to go to the vet, which is NOT how my last two dogs acted.) So THANK YOU to Sophie for being so warm. I appreciate it. (And Natalie, hope to see you next time.)

However, I got this dog sweater from this location and thought maybe my dog would wear it once or twice for pics but never again. (I'm not a huge fan of dogs wearing clothes, but I had to admit a noticeable difference with my short-haired dog not shivering during winter months while wearing two separate coats. So I backed down on making fun of dog coats. My two larger, furrier dogs in prior years never needed manmade coats.) But this sweater is turning into a Linus blanket situation. I tried putting on a "Christmas" dog coat that matched her red Xmas collar (I love festive dog collars!!!), but it was white and getting dirty too quickly. I took it off to handwash it and put the Bark Place pink sweater on my dog solely for one walk, and she's been running away ever since when I try to take it off at night. At one point, she slid under one of the bar stools in my dining room, around the corner, ran into my bedroom and into her crate, flopping down sideways. Even if you don't need anything else in Bark Place, take note of the dog clothes. A bunch of my relatives crochet and knit, so I already knew the dog sweater was solid quality but expected it to wear. It still looks brand new, and my dog is glued to it. When I take it off to bathe her or what I *think* is comfier to sleep at night, she growls and leaps for it. I think a pink sweater and a red bow collar clash, but she couldn't care less about me being the fashion police. I'm tickled by how much she likes THIS particular sweater but has never ever been this into any other dog clothes gift (that I usually return) in four straight years. Don't sleep on the dog sweaters, I guess, unless you're my own dog who will turn over sideways so she CAN sleep in hers.

In December, our Vet noticed Bodhi needed another teeth cleaning. I didn't want him to receive anesthesia again so soon, especially because his breed is sensitive. I found Becker Animal on an internet search for non-anesthesia dental cleanings; they were highly rated. The ratings are spot on! It was a wonderful experience. Our dog had a temperament evaluation with a vet at Becker first. After, he was able to have a full teeth cleaning without anesthesia. The total cost was $305. Bodhi was wrapped in a blanket and his teeth were cleaned in the technicians lap. It only took about 30 minutes. The treatment included cold laser on his gums to help with swelling and a post-treatment consultation to review his dental hygiene, findings, and optional dental products. We left with a goodie bag including a dental chew, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Before and after pics and Bodhi in goggles for laser treatment. Yes, they even take pictures for you! They do not make me feel bad over my need to make cost-conscious decisions and are ready with alternative and/or practical options. They provide dental care, which many other places do not. I almost always see the same vet, and he is great. To those who complain that they don't always see the same vet, I say: get real! Try going to Banfield where you won't even see the vet. Since a change in leadership a couple years ago, the entire veterinary staff has turned over. The prior team was excellent, and in hindsight, their departure should have been my first red flag! I brought my senior dog in for a regular checkup, and we discovered two unrelated health concerns -- one chronic condition and one separate illness we were monitoring because it could become worse. I felt strongly pushed toward medicating the chronic issue, even though I had researched that conservative management could sometimes be appropriate for older dogs. When I expressed hesitation, I felt pressured and made to feel guilty for even considering alternatives. The prescribed medication required frequent dose adjustments and repeated lab work, which quickly became expensive. Even though it was explained that finding the correct dosage would take trial and error, I was still required to purchase a full month's supply in advance. When the dosage was changed faster than expected, I was left with unusable medication and no reimbursement. This felt like an unnecessary and avoidable expense. There could have been a system in place to give me only sufficient medication until they figured it out. Meanwhile, we were monitoring the second issue which would later become more serious. Over the course of many visits within a year, we were seen by a different doctor every time, making continuity of care difficult. I also received conflicting recommendations from the different doctors about how to proceed -- including differing opinions on whether intervention was advisable at my dog's age and I was even told that the medication my dog was on for the chronic condition they pushed me to treat a few months ago would conflict with any medication prescribed for the other issue which was now more serious. Why didn't anyone mention that? During one visit, an interaction between staff and my dog led to a required follow-up and unexpected charges. In 15 years of veterinary visits, never had I had an issue like this before. I felt the situation escalated unnecessarily and was not handled with the level of communication or care I would have hoped for. At my final appointment, I specifically scheduled with the one doctor I felt I could trust, but at the last minute I was seen by someone else. Ultimately, I sought care elsewhere and have not looked back.

After receiving endless recommendations for Companion Skokie (which just so happens to be super close to home), we decided to take our gal to Dr. Lin. All of the staff at Companion have been super helpful, communicative, and extremely transparent. We talked about our gal, Luna's plan of treatment and care from the getgo, and talked about different possibilities we could run into as she grew. We talked about getting her nares worked on, and her spay and microchipping done at the same time. We received a quote ahead of time so we knew what to expect the costs to range at, and when came time for the surgery, they made sure that we were 110% comfortable before leaving our gal there to get worked on. We received a call a few hours later updating us on how the procedures went, and how she was doing and scheduled a time for pick up. Upon pick up of our gal, we had the nurse walk us through all of her post op care procedures and things to be mindful of as we bring her home. Because she got surgery on both ends, along with an ear infection we knew we had to keep a close eye on her. As time progressed, we noticed that there was a swelling by her abdomen, and called in to see if it was normal. We sent pictures and the doctor had us come in just to be safe. After looking at it, we were told it was fluid that built up due to overactiveness at home, which with a frenchie puppy is so accurate. They gave us a course of treatment to help with the swelling, and our gal is on her way to recovery. Even after the surgery, Luna is always so excited to go to the vet because she's excited to see everyone and get all of the belly rubs. :)
