We had the best experience at Becker Animal Hospital in Northfield, Illinois! My dog, Bodhi, had a dental under anesthesia in March of 2025. In December, our Vet noticed Bodhi needed another teeth cleaning. I didn't want him to receive anesthesia again so soon, especially because his breed is sensitive. I found Becker Animal on an internet search for non-anesthesia dental cleanings; they were highly rated. The ratings are spot on! It was a wonderful experience. Our dog had a temperament evaluation with a vet at Becker first. After, he was able to have a full teeth cleaning without anesthesia. The total cost was $305. Bodhi was wrapped in a blanket and his teeth were cleaned in the technicians lap. It only took about 30 minutes. The treatment included cold laser on his gums to help with swelling and a post-treatment consultation to review his dental hygiene, findings, and optional dental products. We left with a goodie bag including a dental chew, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Before and after pics and Bodhi in goggles for laser treatment. Yes, they even take pictures for you! Such a great, caring, and efficient facility. Dr. Kathy has been seeing my pets for almost 10 years now, and I wouldn't pick any other vet to go to. She was able to find bladder stones in my dog that other vets didn't notice, and she never presses for more services to be done than necessary. I have a story and the hero is the Becker team. I recently moved to the city and left Becker after having taken my dogs there for years. If you want to put your pet through unnecessary tests and scans, and spend $1000.00 plus, leave Becker! Our St. Bernard, Nelson had diarrhea and the issue was solved when West Loop Vet changed his food. He was eating, playful, and energetic. His poops were normal and they had us return for a couple follow ups to watch his weight. He wasn't back to his prior weight and they said it's possible something was wrong, that he wasn't retaining calories and we should check it out. They said we would have to put him under for that (no choice which bothered me because I knew he would be still, he's such a chill dog) and the total cost would be $1200. Part panicked and part blown away by the cost, I called Becker, told them the story and asked if this sounded right to them. Nope. They quoted $120 for the scan and $350 if we had to have him sleep but they said most dogs don't need that, they lie still. I scheduled him and had West Loop send the records. Becker called to say there was nothing in the lab results to indicate any need for a scan or even to be seen. Nelson was absolutely normal and his weight was within the healthy range. And the thing is, they saw the invoice and knew they could charge me and I'd pay. Instead, they put our needs first. They are kind, responsible, careful and protective of not just your dog, but you. Let me start by saying this. I am a HUGE animal person. I am NOT a vet person. I don't really believe in the yearly check-ups for pets. I am not one to do animal surgeries or pet Chemo. God bless if you are, but I am just not. Anyway, my wife finally dogged me enough (nice pun) to take the aging family dog into the vet. Well, Becker took fine care of Maxie in that appointment. The vet was a nice lady. We got up to date on the shots. We had a good check-up with some instructions and medicine subscribed. The check out went well. All in all, my dislike for any Vet's materialized during this portion of my visit. Just think the cost of some shots, paperwork, and a 10 minute examination is way out of control. No slam on Becker at all. Other vets are the same way.... So if your spending the money, Becker is a fine and trustworthy facility. I last visited Becker in December. I had decided to put my friend to sleep. Becker was AWSOME. This time an older man. He and the nurse were fantastic. The office staff supurb. This hospital offers a dental cleaning with no anesthesia but you need to make a $70 appointment to evaluate the dog's temperament. When I called to ask for information and submitted the paperwork I explained that my dog has advanced plaque build-up but for health reasons, he could not tolerate anesthesia. I was told that they treat pets with all kinds of advanced dental issues and as long as the pet has the temperament to tolerate the treatment they are very successful with this type of dental cleaning but not all cases were going to be a perfect cleaning. So, I made an appointment for the dog evaluation (my dog is older and very easygoing). In less than 5 minutes of "very careful" evaluation, I was told that given the amount of plaque accumulated the procedure was not possible. What!!! I provided written and verbal explanations of his condition so they could easily tell me this beforehand. I guess they needed the money. This was a total rip-off for no reason because I had told them about his case. I feel I have been taken advantage of. They know we do anything for our pets. read more

Why the heck are all the good reviews for Becker filtered out? Anyway. I've been taking my pets to Becker for as long as I can remember - since we lived in Northbrook, so for about 20 years? We generally see Dr. Luke, and he is just amazing - funny, kind, takes time to explain everything, etc. Everyone there loved my Dobe Hudson, and when I had to have him put to sleep due to cancer at 13.5 years, they were all heartbroken too. Even now that i live in the city, I still head out there and wouldn't go anywhere else. They love my current Dobe Kona as well, even though he's a bit quieter than Hudson was. :-) The front desk people - Frankie and everyone else - are wonderful too. The staff are great. The office staff, the vet techs and the doctors are all professional and warm hearted. Once you have been there a couple of times they know you and your pet. I have two cats and two dogs and they all get great care. It is quite common for the vet to call you to check and follow up on treatments. The doctors have a keen eye and years of experience. They spotted a problem with one of my dogs very early and avoided costly future bills. The office is spot less. I find the vets to be pragmatic in their suggestions for care. They will provide advice - only if asked. With some vets I find they push their opinions or food choices. I will keep going here after 8 years. read more

Our dog, Liza, has been under the care of the vets at Becker since we first brought her home, when she was weeks old. All of the vets who have seen her through the years have been kind and extremely knowledgeable, and, thankfully, Liza has been extremely healthy while under their watchful eye. Dr. Liebman is presently her vet, and he is extremely bright and thoughtful. Liza is our first dog, and Dr. Liebman will most likely be her last vet as she is approaching the ripe old age of 17. There has never been one time where I have not had thoughtful advice given, my questions answered - and yes that includes a generous dose of time given on the phone or in person at the front desk. Be it general information on changing to a new pet product, or needing an opinion whether to bring my pet in - I've always been given respectful and thoughtful consideration. I can't say enough about Dr. Robert Liebman. His exams are lengthy, gentle and many options given. After needing to put one of our beloved pets down; he took us through the journey of saying goodbye over a few month span because our pet who had dementia could not communicate her distress . He monitored her health with each visit, encouraged us to continue but was able to help us make the decision at the right time as he noted her condition changing. I will be forever grateful to have that extra time with her and the dignity and respect shown to us at the end during a very emotional visit. I was still taking my kitties to a vet in Lincoln Park, but was tired of making the commute and wanted one closer to my new home. I agree! I don't know why there was a 1 star review. This place is WONDERFUL! We've taken three family dogs all to this place and we have never received anything but exemplary care and compassion. The women at the front desk are all very kind and knowledgeable, (and remember you!) and all of the physicians at the hospital are great. I am not even partial to a particular vet because I like them all! (This is unusual for me, since I come from a family of doctors and nurses, and I tend to scrutinize every individual in the medical profession--animal and human based). Yes, it's a little more expensive, but the vets have NEVER turned into "sales" for particular products and they even suggest other options if you can't afford something. When our dog was in surgery, the vet fixed something minor, in addition to the real surgery, and didn't even charge us for it. I mentioned this at the front desk and they said not to worry about it. That's when you know that the people are in it for service and not profit. This place is so great that I will never go back to Banfield or any other animal hospital again unless I move out of Illinois. read more

Perhaps I am unusual in that I had only really bad experiences. Nice front office? Are you kidding? Talking on the phone to the extremely condescending person on the other end of the line had me almost in tears twice. I have never met such grouchy, unkind front desk people in my life. They are older ladies, so you would expect them to be nicer, you know, from life experience; but no, they are not. To be fair, I have had very little contact with this animal hospital, and only went there twice to see Dr. Kathy Ilkurina, whom I decided to see because I really really loved her when she was at Golf Mil Animal Hospital. I don't know what happened - I brought a cat to her that was experiencing a kidney infection, and she practically pronounced him dead right there in the office. She sent me home with antibiotics. I don't know what happened with me - I am usually so proactive and will go to extreme measures to save my cats, including everything alternative, but something really bad happened in my mind for which I will never forgive myself. Because I totally trusted her based on years of being her client. For some odd reason, she sent me home with only 7 (SEVEN) DAYS OF BAYTRIL. 7 DAYS???????? FOR A SERIOUS DEADLY INFECTION??? I brought him back after 14 days, because (not surprisingly) he got worse again. I should have brought him to the emergency room so they could give him intravenous antibiotics and we could fight for his life. But instead, like some mind-controlled idiot, I brought him back to Dr. Kathy, who convinced me to euthanize this cat right then and there. I will never forgive myself, and decided to write this review when once again my mind wandered to thoughts of Jasper and I could no longer keep my mouth shut. There was nothing in her treatment that suggested fighting for his life, which is my main complaint. She calls herself an expert in kidney disease, and decided to pronounce him dead without even a fight. I know he had at least a chance, but she gave him none. read more

Becker Animal Hospital is the best! I have been taking my cat there for 13 years and Dr. Wagner has treated her from the beginning. He is an excellent surgeon. My cat had an autoimmune disease of the gums and Dr. Wagner had to remove most of her teeth. She had no pain after the surgery and was running and eating the day after surgery. Sadly, 13 years later, she is diagnosed with chronic renal failure but Dr. Wagner has been very supportive and provided me with lots of information and will answer any and all of the questions I had....I would highly recommend this clinic/hospital. I went to Dr. Kathy for the first time 6 months ago. We had been quoted 800.00- 1200. for a dental cleaning at Green Bay animal hospital. Dr. Kathy examined our dogs teeth and said that she had moderate plaque. No teeth were pulled and the bill was less than 300.00. I just scheduled our dog for her annual check-up with her. I have been going to Becker Animal Hospital for over 10 years. Drs. Wagner and Liebman have treated the 3 different dogs I have had over the years. They have operated on them , nurtured them back to health and helped me thru it!! as has nurse Stacy. The secys are kind and considerate. When you call to say there is a serious issue, they don't question you, but say come right over. It is they type of office you sometimes wish your primary doc would have and care for you in the same way!. I have found no problem or question is "silly" or wasting their time.
