THIS REVIEW IS FOR ONE PARTICULAR INCIDENT: Our beloved dog (Zoe) of 15 years battled through cancer for 2 years and last Thursday was the day we decided to let her go after a seizure episode that she couldn't recover from. Unfortunately, what we thought would be a peaceful goodbye turned out to be a devastating experience to our family (and sad for Zoe). The doctor lacked compassion and bedside manner. When our dog was still breathing after administering the 3rd shot, he said "I don't understand, these shots would have taken a horse down." This is NOT something you say to a grieving family, maybe to your colleagues or students. There were no comforting words or explanation as to what was happening. All he did was go in and out of the room to give her more shots because our dog was still breathing (he tells us, "I've been doing this for 53 years and I never had this happen"). After the 4th shot, he came back in the room and told us that he would have to administer an intracardiac euthanasia. I totally lost it! My son and I walked out of the room, but my husband and daughter stayed. My husband said that 2 shots were given straight to her heart. This was such a devastating and traumatic experience for all of us. We were hoping that our final moments with our beloved Zoe would be peaceful, but it was not. My husband said that it was only at this moment (after Zoe's heart had stopped), the doctor said that it had to be done because of her low blood pressure (no other time during our ordeal did he offer an explanation). The only positive thing I can say was that the attending Vet Nurse Britina showed compassion, and Vet Nurse Sara who sat down with me and my son in the lobby, explained to us what "could" possibly be happening to Zoe. Sara lend a warm touch to ease my pain. This doctor has 53 years of experience, he may have been so desensitized after doing this for 53 years (like it's just another day in the office), because he showed no care or sympathy. We have seen other doctors in this clinic who has much less experience but showed more care and empathy. I am writing this to spare someone from this awful, awful experience. Overall, Zoe has been going here for over 3 years since our old Vet moved out of state. Zoe had seen Dr. Zebold and Dr. McGriff, and they are both great. Unfortunately, this one particular incident is a horrendous experience we will never forget. read more

I cannot give enough stars for the ongoing treatment of our dog Stella. We were on a wellness plan and it was great and the best investment possible. Unfortunately Stella got very sick and we were at Deerfield Animal care center a few times a week. Dr. Barron was our main vet and her caring, thoughtful and extremely thorough attention gave us the comfort we needed. Unfortunately Stella had to cross the rainbow bridge, but Dr. Barron was not only her Doctor, but her advocate, her friend and provided us the help and loving care we so badly needed. We've been going there for years and never had an issue. Today I took my dog in for his annual check up, one that had to be rescheduled per the center. It caused my dog to be overdue with his rabies shot. The assistant acted like it was my fault and told me that if my dog bites any of them they would euthanize him. When giving him his shot, I used to be able to hold him and there was never a problem. Today, after telling me they would kill my dog if he bites, they said I couldn't hold him and that the doctor wants him taken in back. Wtf??? Thankfully, my dog did fine. The doctor then comes in and tells me they would just quarantine him if that were to happen. It's like they threatened his life just to sell drugs in which I bought to "calm him down" his next visit. These people are sick. Then when bringing the meds to the counter, the woman who told me they would euthanize my dog just tossed the meds in a tray and walked away without even acknowledging me. This place used to be so great and unfortunately changes in staff were made and it went down. Never taking a pet there ever again. read more

Took my cats here and on most occasions wanted to take them to the back to do shots, etc. Then there was an issue with medication and I had to call multiple times and kept getting different people. Each person said something different. Vets didn't return calls. Frankly, I'd had enough and I wasn't nice with them. You should see what they wrote in my pets medical file that they sent to the next vet. Even one of the vets said I was rude and aggressive. Wonder why when they don't return calls and mess up your pets medication. They didn't even put flavoring in. They refused to refund a penny. Horrible, horrible place. It's clean but you never see anyone taking cats there. It's always dogs that I see. I should have listened to my intuition and ran th other way. I do NOT recommend taking any cats there. Of course, this is my opinion from multiple experiences with them. read more

This place is so unethical. Beware of hidden fees. They don't tell you what things will cost nor do they ask permission for optional vaccines. When they quoted me on a price for a vaccine I was recommended for my cat they said it was $88 total split in half per visit for the shot (that's how they dose this particular vaccine). The first dose is $44. Then they add $11 each time (without telling you about THAT of course) for "medical waste fee". They rip people off and will also suggest procedures that aren't always necessary. If you do go here be aware and seek a second opinion if it's a pricey non emergency procedure. Also do your research if they say it is "optional but they recommend it". If they were transparent about their fees I'd feel much different because it wasn't a bad experience per se, but they are shady. read more

I would highly suggest that you look elsewhere if you are seeking a vet that will treat you like a person and not just another piece of their revenue. We have been so impressed by the care our dog receives here. Not only is the care fantastic but the vets and staff are easily reachable, and are willing to consult with you over the phone to save you a trip to their office if they determine an exam isn't necessary. They are very accommodating and the drop in hours are great. Aside from that, our dog has a complex medical issue and we've been very impressed by how they've handled it. read more

Clean facilities but no one seems happy to actually be there. I volunteer with a local shelter and had some very sick kittens (3 of 8 passed away). Whenever I brought the kittens to be seen for my concerns the vets never talked to me. A tech came out, took the kitten, then brought them back when they were done. No one spoke to me except to check in. I was never asked about their care, never told possible diagnosis, or even directly told treatments. They typed up brief general summaries and sent them to the shelter. Because they never talked directly to me I felt that many symptoms went unaddressed. I was watching my babies die one by one with no help. The whole situation was already stressful and the staff were very cold. I understand that when shelter and vets work together it is "extra" but twice I made appointments and waited over 30 minutes to be seen. I arrived on time every appointment. I heard vets and staff arguing over having to see another patient and wanting to refuse. I drove 45 minutes to their location to wait for 30 in a wait room, only to hear vet staff debating turning me away. When I was finally seen the appointment was so brief with no conclusion it felt like a total waste of time. read more

So far so great. Friendly receptionists but most importantly I got a same day appt with a vet for 2 new kittens. (My previous vet was a 3 week out appointment plus I had to give a $95 upfront to them even though my dog had been with them for around 5 yrs! ) I chose this place purely because orphans of the storm told me this was the only place to get free spaying but because of how I was treated as a customer I'll be happy to stay for all my veterinary needs. The Vet tech took vitals and then the vet did a thorough check as well. No nonsense from the vet which suits me fine. read more

The staff was very nice to my dog, Eeyore, who was having a bit of a rough time. We got an appointment at a convenient time for us and they fixed him up. I was over 15 minutes late, which was my fault, but just FYI there's a $20 late charge if you're over 15 minutes late and you get seen as a walk in. Absolutely fabulous. Such a wonderful experience I'm so happy we switched from the Petsmart hospital. We felt so welcomed and valued when we came for our first visit today with our frenchie. There was no up selling, no high pressure you need this or that. The tech Kara and our vet were so easy going , friendly and professionally. We feel lucky to have such a beautiful vet hospital here in Deerfield staffed with the most professional knowledgeable staff. Our frenchie received an ultrasound to confirm she is pregnant and we look forward to continuing her care here. The front staff was wonderful. I wasn't up charged and the prices were very reasonable. First time visit (new patient). Nice new facility and especially liked the ability to see / speak to the Vet in person. Many Vets around the area make you stay in your car and talk via phone. Cat owners should avoid!! Every single time I went here, I left upset. It wasn't until going to a new vet that I recognized all of the issues with Deerfield Animal Care Center. Most recently, I brought my cat in for her annual checkup and she was experiencing diarrhea. They gave her medicine and told me to come back next week for vaccines and assured me I wouldn't have to pay another exam fee. When I brought her back the following week, they took her out of the room to "the back" like they ALWAYS do and it turns out: they put her in a cage! They were clipping dogs nails as they left her in a cage without telling me! Once they tried to get her out of the cage, she was so scared that she started hissing and basically screaming. We heard her from the exam room and thought there was no way that could be her when they were only supposed to give vaccines? The doctor comes in and shares how "mean" and "awful" she and cats are and I should sedate her. He said (word for word) "she was turning purple from us trying to restrain her". What was happening?! Why do they always take her to "the back"?! He said they couldn't examine her due to her aggression. I didn't even know why he tried to examine her. However, she's brought back in the room breathing very heavy and shaking. I'd never seen her like this. To top it all off, they charged me again for the exam they said they couldn't do and the week prior they said they wouldn't do. Each time: - Taken to the back - Caged - Hear other dogs crying through the door - Condescending untrustworthy doctors (@ Dr. Berg and Dr. Zebald very rude) Cat owners should stay away. My cat is traumatized and even the new vet took a look at prior test results and shared info that Deerfield Animal Care Center "missed". Awful. read more

I love Deerfiled Animal Care Center! The facility is clean and updated, the staff is super friendly and caring. I take my pets here for boarding and the staff will send pics/updates daily if you choose. They do a wonderful job caring for my babies and I am so happy I chose them for boarding. read more

Dr was nice at first but nothing was organized. Waited to check out and when it was too long I asked for help to check out only to have the Dr. Come out and said with a passive agressive smile that I showed up late so they are late for me as well. My kitten will not be going there again. Don't smile to my face and make a rude comment...I was trying to get my daughter to a dialysis appointment and I can't control that I was 10 min late due to weather. But your staff decided to take a 15 min call as I was checking out. Next time you want to judge, know my life first Dr Z and stop smiling as you cut people down. This little thing, Princess Serafina, was taken too soon. She was our first cat. When the appointment was scheduled on Monday for Saturday, they said she could be in heat and that could make it a bit more complicated but the extra $61 would cover that expense. On Wednesday they called and said they had an opening on Friday and to bring her in then. After the surgery they sent her home because she was hissing. She was discharged with a letter stating she was examined by the vet and found in good health for the surgery. She was brought home, fell asleep on the couch and in the morning her cone was on the floor and she was missing. She was found limp and freezing cold. She was wrapped in a towel, taken back to the vet, and the owner Dr. Vsomething did an ultrasound, saw internal bleeding and said "I need a credit card and a 4,000$ deposit to go back in and correct but she'll probably need a transfusion that we can't do here so take her to Blue Pearl". Blue Pearl found the same thing but said they needed to transfuse her before they could go in. For 7 hours this princess laid alone being transfused because of a surgeon at Deerfield Animal Care Center who has no business operating on any animal and because this business primary concern was being paid. She died at 1 am Sunday and I am heart broken. She was so cute and so unique. She went on walks with the dogs (no leash), climbed up trees, harassed Cody and my toes, loved Simba and was a welcome pleasure to the already then zoo. Now she's but for memory and blessing. Never take your dog here. They messed up my appointment time twice in 2 weeks and didn't ever actually book his appointment. They never apologized and the vet instead went on the defensive and told me how it wasn't her fault. My dog had to wait 25 minutes to be seen and was barking and shaking nonstop. I'm switching vets and would encourage others to find somewhere else to go too. read more

I've been to a few vet clinics for my late Abbie. And have horror stories I can tell until tomorrow's sun comes up. But I won't. Because Dr Sterner gave my husband and I true faith that there is a such thing as a wonderful veterinarian. We just left after our one week visit with our Khloe and he was attentive, caring, and full of knowledge. I would recommend this Animal Hospital to anyone and everyone who asks. We took a dog home from Orphans of the Storm in Riverwoods about a year ago. We've taken him to Deerfield Animal Care Center since, but note that this is a new name for the facility, formerly Deerfield Animal Hospital, and that the ownership is being transitioned. I'm a bit of a "wait and see" kind of guy, I haven't been in often enough to recommend without reservation, but I am very happy so far, both with the care given our dog and with the service provided by the office. I don't doubt anything else written here, but suggest that it may be out of date. I'm very happy so far. read more

We bring our yellow lab here, and now we will continue bringing our rescued-from-a-parking-lot Maine Coon here too!! Dr. Sterner was absolutely amazing with the dog, very patient, and so good with her. When we wound up rescuing a stray cat, we brought her in, and they got her in the same day. (The receptionist, who I suspect is more than "just" a receptionist, is absolutely fantastic. Always very patient and cheerful!) Dr. Sterner ran x-rays, found out she was a mess in her belly. (Will spare Yelpers the details.) He wound up doing an emergency spay on her, after hours, because she might not have made it if it went on any longer. She wound up being pretty mad at everyone, but she made it through the surgery, despite a 50/50 chance of making it. (I always ask for honest less than pleasant news.) I cannot possibly say enough how awesome this new vet is. I'm so grateful that we are fortunate enough to have him at this clinic now, and will stay with this vet as long as we humanly possible. read more

Dr Sterner is the best thing that has ever happened to the Vet world, particularly to my dog Dino. A few years ago Dino was diagnosed with IMHA (auto-immune disease) and in our opinion potentially not going to make it. Thanks to the dedication, knowledge and continuous support of Dr Sterner, Dino bounced back and is still with us today. Dr Sterner treated Dino at the Naperville Animal Hospital but has since relocated up to the Deerfield Animal Care Center. So if you are looking for a new vet, look no further. Dr Sterner is truly such a wonderful person and is so invested in his four-legged patients. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have our big guy today! read more

I have just rescued a puppy and brought her to The Deerfield Animal Care Center (formerly Deerfield Animal Hospital). My family has used this hospital for the past 45 years. Dr. Miller's knowledge and skill base continue to hold him in high regard. I have found Jan to be patient, polite and helpful with resources with my many calls and questions. They seem fairly priced and cheaper than some of their competitors. This may be the result of the DAH not updating their decor as it is identical to my memories of it in the 70's. No fancy granite counters or floors but as a result, their focus is on the service and not the presentation and providing an affordable & comfortable experience for your pet needs. read more

Deerfield Animal Care Center has a new owner Dr. Sterner. He is the best Veterinarian I have ever ever met in my entire life!!!!! My mother's dog is very very sick with pancreatitis and diabetes. Dr. Sterner has assisted my mother and since she is 90 years old and the center is 1 block away he went over twice to help her by giving our Otto a shot. He is caring and sweet and stayed with my mom and Otto for about a half hour. He is intelligent, well qualified, knows the newest treatments and has the warmest best attitude. We were all crying the other day because we had to take Otto to the hospital and Dr. Sterner followed up with 3 calls and several text messages. AGAIN I'VE NEVER NEVER MET a better qualified and nicer veterinarian maybe because he's originally from Iowa! His receptionists answered my multiple calls and never got annoyed by me!
