This place is a great little observatory. We camp at Markham in January every year and ALWAYS go out to the observatory on Saturday night! The volunteers have always been very informative and nice. They have two big telescopes pointed at the best planets/stars out any given night. Sometimes there are also individuals on the lawn with personal telescopes anyone can look through. On occasion they have opened the back room to give small short lectures to our group (usually aimed towards the children). Overall you'll spend 15-20 minutes at this ovservatory. If you're camping at Markham or a local, this is totally a must see! read more

FYI- you will not see foxes (I'm an idiot). It's an free observatory located in Markham Park that is open on Saturdays from sunset to midnight. It's managed by a group called South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association and a few of the members set up their telescopes outside of the observatory in the grass by the parking lot. The actual observatory is small with two large telescopes and the volunteers will guide guests to step on a small ladder to view through the telescopes. The volunteers explain what can be seen through the telescope and will gladly give you more information on what can be seen throughout the night. I had the pleasure of chatting up Jim who was one of the members outside with his telescope. He was very friendly and offered lots of information about what was out there. I pointed out one bright star and he had a very thorough description of what it was, how far away it was and overall had tons of knowledge on the solar systems. Great for kids. You won't spend too much time out there but it's great to see that we have something so beautiful to offer for free on a Saturday night. I love this place, I appreciate it, it's free to go, there are mosquitos take bug repellent, you can bring your own telescope and place it on their lawn, or use their massive ones, they have two, you stand in line, and then there is a back room where they discuss meteors etc, they are good to ask about purchasing telescopes for in home use too. read more

Very upset with the way that members of this operation treated us as guests. Not knowing that our headlights would affect the viewing experience from where we were parked, we were yelled at and belittled by the operators. BEWARE OF HELEN... she's a very bitter human and made our experience very uncomfortable. Granted, there were some nice old men that had a lot of knowledge to share and were very kind; though, the actions and conversations of certain members when we arrived were notably derogatory and unnecessary. YOU'RE OPERATING IN A PUBLIC PARK FOR THE PUBLIC.... Simply unacceptable behavior for a grown woman to yell at first time visitors that would not know any better. Ruined our night. read more
