Dr. Eric Quartetti should NOT be caring for patients, esp children. Here's why: My 2yo son had an eye injury on a Tues evening around 5pm I immediately called his pediatrician who advised me to go to Urgent Care. We went immediately. Doc examined him and determined nothing was lodged in his eye. By the end of the appt, his eye stopped watering, he was able to look around. Doc said take him to the ophthalmologist within 48 hours. The very next day (Wed), I had to take him to the pediatrician to get a referral for the eye doc (they required a visit). The ped examined his eye and also said she was not concerned. I called Fox Valley as soon as I left, but they were closed. I called right when they opened the next morn (Thurs) and had him in there by 10am (less than 40 hours after the injury). Dr. Quartetti came in and asked what happened. I start to tell him, barely getting to the first dr visit when he interrupts me and says, "Wait, this happened ON TUESDAY???! And YOU are JUST now bringing him in???" Shocked at his raised voice and tone, I said that I literally followed my ped and urgent care doc's orders to a T. He continued to berate me, saying things like "Ma'am I'm not sure you're understanding BUT our EYES are VERY IMPORTANT!!! This was a 9-1-1 E-M-E-R-G-E-N-C-Y." I put my hand up and said, "You will NOT speak to me like this." This enraged him. He said condescending things like, "Do you understand how important our vision is??" (NO, doc, I'm 37 years old with a master's degree, but wHaT aRe EyEs.) "Your urgent care FAILED YOU. This is NOT THE PROTOCOL. You should have called our emergency care line IMMEDIATELY." I responded that I had an HMO and I had to get a referral, to which he had the audacity to reply: "MONEY is not more important than HIS VISION!!! I would have done the VISIT FOR FREE if you would've called!!!" (This was one of the more insane things he said; how on EARTH would I have any idea to 1) not follow the 1st doc's orders and 2) that it would be free!!??? At this point I was shaking so hard and my two-year-old was absolutely terrified. I asked him to stop berating me and examine my son so we could leave. Then it gets even worse. The doctor is visibly angry and snaps at my, again, TWO-year-old to "put your chin HERE". My son slowly puts his face in and the doc says "OPEN YOUR EYE". No little tricks, nothing to help him because he's a small and afraid child. Dr. tries for *maybe* another 30 seconds sits back and goes, "You're going to have to take him to Lurie Children's and have him put under." Just like that. No warning, no context; just I'm done and he needs general anesthesia. My heart was going to beat out of my chest. I said to him, "You have barely tried to examine him, how could the next step be putting my child UNDER anesthesia??" He goes on to say how he's been doing this for 20 years and he can tell immediately who is going to sit for an exam and who is not and he can tell my son will not. Shaking, I called my husband at work and said we were having an emergency at the doctor's and I needed him to come there right away. My husband asked to talk to doc who stumbled around, saying our son won't sit for an exam and he needs the eye examined because of the mechanism of injury (projectile), and I say loudly, "he has only examined him for THIRTY SECONDS TOPS." My husband tells him he needs to try again and the doctor relents. So he attempts to examine him again, but again doesn't try in any way to make it easier for him.I ask if they can show him anything to get him to look the way they want (how in the world do they treat any children without knowing any of those techniques!?) and I get out my phone to show him some videos. My child is distraught at this point. I ask the doctor for a break and he goes, sarcastically, "You know what? I'm SORRY I'm not telling you what YOU want to hear." I said, "STOP talking to me like THAT." And he goes, no joke, "Oh, I'm sorry I ASSUMED you wanted to hear your CHILD IS OK" and turns and walks out the room. They came back in 15 minutes. I came up with ways to help my child sit though the exam, like asking the assistant to hold his head so I could hold the phone so he would look toward me. Doc looked right into his eye and IT WAS COMPLETELY FINE LIKE THE OTHER TWO DOCS SAID. No apology. No phone call. Nothing. I called the next day and spoke to manager who told me over and over that "this was not like him" and "he's the sweetest doctor". I don't care if you are the nicest doctor in the world 99 / 100 visits, you do not have permission to verbally ABUSE ANYONE. They never followed on my son to see how he was (urgent care did twice, though!) and I just received a bill. Called the mgr again 4 days ago, nothing back. I am submitting a report to the Academy of Ophthalmology Ethics Committee. And I will never go to another doc appt without my phone recording audio of the visit. I have been going to Dr. Pica for several years. I admit and with her have admitted to not being compliant with my contact over usage. Every year she would come in and talk to me about the risks of wearing my contacts longer than I should. I feel I always had a good open honest relationship with her. With that said the last appointment I had with her was awful. She stormed into the room telling me she couldn't see me anymore because of my non compliance. Did not say hi...just came in angry and making me feel horrible. I held back tears as she berated me. I am a mom to two young children. I work full time and I have put my health on the back burner, as any mom/dad can probably resonate with. Making appointments is difficult when a lot of the times appointments are only available during working hours. For her to come in and just attack me rather than treating me as a human and discussing how I can do better for myself was so cold to say the least. I have never been spoken to in that way from a doctor where I am paying for their services. She sent me a letter saying I had 30 days to find another doctor after this appointment. Which was fine I had no plans to return after her the ways she treated me. Before I got the letter I called to order my contacts. The lady stated the prescription had not been finalized and she would have to call me back. She lied. She knew she couldn't order the contacts for me because she had to confirm with Dr. Pica that the letter was received. She called me back to say she could send the prescription but couldn't order my contacts because Dr. Pica was not going to follow me!? However, the letter stated I had 30 days. Regardless their lack of honesty and compassion I wanted to be brought to attention. I would never refer anyone I know to fox valley. read more

This is a wonderful eye clinic. I suffered an eye injury when I was a kid so I had something like 20-200 vision in my right eye. After an examination with Dr Quartetti they fitted my eye with a soft lens, corrected my vision down to 20-30, and for the first time in 47 years I have binocular vision again. I can't say enough about how great this place is. Other eye doctors had told me nothing could be done, so I am very grateful for everyone at Fox Valley Ophthalmology. read more
