Two Hardware Stores, in our area-- And a Few Thoughts:…read more We're fortunate to have two hardware stores in our area -- convenience matters, and I genuinely try to keep my spending local. The staff is consistently helpful and knowledgeable, and that counts for a lot. Supporting local businesses means keeping our neighbors employed, and I don't take that lightly. But let's talk about the elephant in the room: pricing. I've done the comparisons. Many items here run 2x what you'd pay online -- and increasingly, I'm seeing things priced at 3x the online equivalent. I understand local businesses can't always match the big online retailers, but markups at that level make it genuinely hard to justify shopping here regularly, even when I want to. For my fellow seniors: there's a 10% discount available -- but only one day a week. Here's the thing: we're seniors every single day. To their credit, the other hardware store in our area offers no senior discount at all -- so this place is at least a step ahead there. But a modest everyday discount, even at a lower percentage, would go a long way toward building loyalty with a customer base that shops consistently and values local relationships. It would be worth exploring. I'm not here to organize a boycott -- that's not my style. But I will say this: if the pricing gap keeps widening, more and more of us are drifting to online options, not out of preference, but out of necessity. It's worth noting that seniors are a very different customer base than they were 5 or 10 years ago -- nearly everyone I know has learned to shop online, or has someone who does it for them. For those of us on fixed incomes, finding a better price isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. The goodwill is there. The staff is great. Meet us halfway on the value, and this place could really thrive.

I stopped by last week, for the second time and received the same, excellent, cheerful, and knowledgeable service as I did the first time. Kurt's Garden has an excellent variety of trees and bushes. I showed up with lots of pics/ideas of what I was looking for. Since I knew I was going to have a lot of questions i.e. I needed some handholding, I tried to make sure I arrived at a time with less traffic. I found their prices to be commensurate with what I was seeing online and I'd much prefer to support a local business, so I will be back! I haven't made a purchase yet, but only because I'm worried about planting right now, with this horrible heat wave.

I really wanted to go local and hire this place to do a few acres of landscaping after a friend who…read moreworked there was telling me regularly how well they care for their plants. I figured I would try them out and purchased about 10 plants for around $500. All of the plants did pretty well considering the heat wave we were experiencing when I purchased them. Within a week the most expensive tree, a conifer, I purchased for about $150 started to show signs of disease and began wilting heavily. I contacted them for support and they recommended a fertilizer which I tried with no success. After I followed up with them for more support, sent pictures, explained that the other 8 plants I purchased were doing fine they recommended I continue to water it. Three days later the tree was wilting very badly so I called again. Several days after I contacted them for the second time someone responded telling me it looked like heat stress and that the tree should recover. It didn't. I messaged again to ask if I could exchange the tree or receive some sort of credit given how all other plants I purchased where surviving and this one tree (the most expensive) began to die with in less than a week of bringing it home. The person told me they would ask Kurt and would get back to me. That was over a month ago and I haven't received any reply. In many way I'm very grateful I did a small test run with this business before committing to a much larger project. Never-the-less I am deeply disappointed in the service and complete lack of care for my situation. I understand that plants are living and results of their continued health becomes uncertain when they are moved off-site. I wouldn't have been too upset if anyone had just communicated with me about their policies, or provided even a small discount on future purchases as a means of acknowledging the unfavorable results or to demonstrate that customer service had any priority to them. Unfortunately none of that happened. I wish I could feel good about supporting a smaller local business but in stark contrast to Kurt's garden the surrounding local hardware stores had pricing that was a bit lower and their service was 1000% better. They were available to answer questions the same day or within 24 hrs. and actually wanted to make sure all the plants I purchased from them survived a week or two after I purchased them. Given the experience between buying from a smaller local business which offers higher pricing and smaller selection and seems like they couldn't care less about the interactions their customers have or the survival of the plants they raise with so much extra care and attention it justifies the higher the price point, and a box store which has lower pricing, responds to customers concerns and actually reconciles errors, I'm going to be choosing the local big box store for my larger project. Really disappointed in my experience here.

After purchasing my item,…read morethis older Caucasian woman dressed in a blue top (who I was later told was the manager) approached me in the parking lot and curtly demanded to see my receipt. I produced it and she compared the price on my item with the receipt, presumably to ensure I bought it (and didn't steal it or swapped tags with another item?). Then she handed it back to me without a word and started to walk back into the store. Nothing along the lines of "thank you, have a nice day" or any courtesy for patronizing their business. As she entered the door to the Restore, she swung back around and snapped at me about my car being parked in the handicap spot if I'm not disabled. I personally am not, but my mother-in-law is, and my mother-in-law was still checking out her items, and we had the disabled placard hung up in the car. Again, not a single word after this. She did tell me my trunk wasn't closed fully though, so I appreciated that. I guess she had to have the last word? I was made to feel like a criminal. I went to the counter where my mother-in-law was checking out and told her how the manager just rudely spoke to and treated me. The staff at the counter apologized and I replied it's not their fault. It's obvious to me the manager hates her job, so for the sake of ensuring continued business by well-meaning customers, she should either show some respect or let someone who can smile take her job.

Julie was so incredibly UNHELPFUL when I came in today to pick up my items we purchased on Tuesday. She can't seem to find the correlation between the words pickup and loading and was so condescending when I had to spell out for her I was here to pick up my items. When she finally was able to compute that, everything went fairly smoothly until some moron blocked the parking lot with their trailer and then she came out and asked me if I was carrying my furniture I bought to my car...lol I would pay someone to do that for me Julie, if that was the case. Regardless of my awful experience with her, and her disgusting attitude, we got our items we paid for and are happy. Hopefully Julie sees happier days soon.

As the months went on, I got nervous because the weather was cooler than normal, and the flowers were growing slowly. So I added 400 stems of bulk flowers to my order for insurance. Deena was awesome. She was super willing with great information. I LOVE her event software that tracts your proposal, order, payments, etc. We were always in the know. As the wedding got closer, she kept in close contact, making sure we were all on the same page. We had the bulk flowers delivered the day before so that we could prepare the table arrangements. We picked up the other arrangements the day of the wedding to make sure they were super fresh. In the meantime, my flowers kicked in and were amazing. It was a wildflower-themed wedding. We kept our flowers in pots, and didn't have to worry about them wilting, etc., while we kept Sweet Roots Farm flowers cool to bring out at the last minute. The flowers stole the show. It was a huge success. The house was not landscaped. There was a lot of brown.....until all of the flowers showed up. It was beautiful! The bouquets, boutonnieres, and other arrangements were perfect! Thank you Deena for a beautiful display!!!

After just purchasing some items from the store, my daughter wanted to look at the Mickey and Minnie Christmas houses. I am pregnant and currently can't hold my daughter for long periods of time- she carefully was looking at the houses but got excited and her finger bumped a shelf while trying to show me something. An item fell off the shelf and broke. My daughter immediately started crying because she was being so careful and felt bad it broke. While I was trying to reassure her, a sales gal came over and started telling me that she broke part of a set and was very frustrated. I offered to pay for the piece but she continued to be incredibly rude, all while my daughter was crying because it was an accident. I understand pieces in the store can be pricey, but after offering to pay for the broken item, I would've expected a significant change in attitude. This is a store with great items, but I won't be shopping there again.
