My relationship with RMR started over a decade ago. They were who we called to service our 1930s Norge. Like most of reviews say, they were pleasant and seemed honest. I signed a contract with them in June of 2016 to rehab the stove, and gave them a deposit. I was told March 2017 as the latest start date. April 2017 - Contacted RMR about start date. Was told they were backed up due selling stoves from their inventory for restoration AFTER I signed my contract, and those took priority. July 2017 - Emailed asking about start date. They said they'd start mid September latest. Months went by, no communication. Finally with some prodding, they picked up my stove on 4/10/2018, almost 2 years after the contract was signed and 1 year after work was to originally start. No communication for a year. On 4/12/2019 Mike emails me to say they had received the parts that needed fabricated and they would start reassembling the stove in a week. They were still looking for a backsplash and work light per our contract. October 2019 - contacted RMR via email for update. Told they put reconstruction on hold due to other projects. Said it would be another month or two. February 2020 - RMR contacted me via email to tell me the stove was almost "wrapped up", and included a picture with new legs and a backsplash. Said the thermostat was in great working order and holding its set temperature at +/-5 degrees. They also mentioned that they were looking for new handles as one had been "repaired" 50-70 years ago and during "cleaning" the glue had dissolved and the handle broke. All handles were in great condition when the stove left my home, but whatever, let them find some new handles. I wrote them back no response. April 2020 - I receive a bizarre email from Mike telling me we were going to have to "wrap this up", as they were over the project, and had no new handles, so I'd have to just deal with the fact one would be missing. I could buy the backsplash if I wanted (even though it was included in the contract), and that if I wanted any further restoration done, to contact another company. YEARS of being strung along. Given excuse after excuse...and now this? I told them this was unacceptable and unprofessional, and that for them to tell me they were just giving up on my project, and then trying to nickel and dime me would not stand. They would finish the project as agreed, or I'd take legal action. Mike didn't like that I stood up for myself and accused me of being "threatening" and "scaring" him, which was ridiculous. I was firm that I wouldn't be taken advantage of and he wanted to play the victim? He even threatened to leave my stove out on the street if I didn't "calm down". The degradation of it all. We agreed to work it out. They'd find handles and include the backsplash. The stove would be delivered, and everything in the contract would be fulfilled. They would give me a full refund and the transaction would be considered complete. This was all his proposal. I willingly agreed to it. We kept in touch over the next 8 months. Things were cordial. They found new handles. Due to Covid snags on their end and mine, the stove was finally delivered on 1/13/2021. After delivery I noticed chips and dings to the enamel that weren't there before. Rust that wasn't there before. The front right burner wasn't lighting as it should. I tested the oven at 400 to see if it would hold a temp, it stayed at 400 so I didn't think anything of it. Water started leaking out as it heated up. The stove as a whole had an acrid smell (and still does). I contacted RMR. Reyna called and said the moisture was normal because the stove had been sitting for so long (clearly in a damp location). The smell was normal. I guess if normal means your stove should smell strongly of rust. A few days later I went to cook a dish that takes 6 hours at 300. The oven wouldn't hold 300. In fact, no matter how low I turned it down, there it sat at 400. I used a couple of the burners to simmer some food. The enamel was melting and chipping off, if it was even enamel, looks more like paint. I would see in the contract they weren't liable for faulty finishes or parts they didn't finish or build personally. Classy. I contacted them to ask them to please come service the oven as per our contract the thermostat is supposed to be in working order and guaranteed for 90 days. No response. I contacted them again, politely insisting they come fix my oven. I got a smug email telling me that their obligations were fulfilled, and that they would no longer be serving my vintage stove needs. At no point did we ever agree that the refund would void our contract. Months later I'm stuck with an oven that still doesn't work properly RMR is run by people who don't hold themselves accountable, and will leave you in a lurch due to their own shortcomings and bad faith behavior. Our house has an old built-in stove that dates back to the 60s. It wasn't functioning when we moved in and RMR were able to come out and get it working. They were able to source a new gas control valve and get it working safely in time for Christmas. I had another little issue with it in the last week and they were nice enough to come out again and make sure everything was working correctly. As far as I'm aware they're the only local outfit that do vintage oven repair and so they do have a wait time of around 1-2 weeks. They do good, thorough work that they stand by and were always punctual and friendly when stopping by our house. read more

Wow! We are so grateful for the team at RMR! After buying our new house this fall, we realized we had an oven that wouldn't heat above 320 degrees and stove burners that weren't lighting on their own. Mike and Rena came out to our house and we're able to fix everything on our vintage range in one trip. The burners light without a lighter, our broiler works better than we'd hoped, and the over heats up and stays hot. RMR came to repair piss-poor work that had been done by another company on my 1940s O'Keefe & Merritt and were FANTASTIC. Mike was a true professional from start to finish, and walked me through every issue and update that needed to happen. The whole process was transparent and clear, and I felt incredibly confident in the work being done--a relief! They identified a slew of issues that had been caused by the last "repair" person, namely: - The wrong light bulbs had been installed (not appliance-friendly) - Leaking gas from the pilot tube (yikes!) - Fixed the burner settings to allow for low, medium, and high heat (the other company just said that they could only be on full high or completely low) - Fixed the Grillevator quickly and for free, when the other company said it would cost money and take a lot of time to get it working - Fixed the incorrectly installed thermocouple - Fixed the bottom drawer hinges, which had been put on incorrectly by the last company - Provided excellent referrals for chroming and new parts After feeling fully deflated and down more than $1,500 from the first company we used, Mike was a hero and made me fall in love with my used stove all over again. I wish every home repair outfit was as ethical, efficient, and reasonably priced as RMR. They came out a few months ago and did a tune up on my 1948 Gaffer and Sattler stove and it now is working perfectly. After the tune up I had occasion to call RMR about relighting the pilot after a house sitter thought he smelled a gas leak and shut of the gas supply line. Mike from RMR patiently talked me through the process. Old stoves are great and thank goodness we have RMR in San Diego to help maintain them and keep them from going to the landfill only to be replaced by the plastic looking and often short-lived junk now being sold. read more

I recently moved into the cutest old house in North Park. When the landlord walked me through the house, she started with the kitchen. Smart Lady, there is a wonderful old O'Keefe and Merritt Stove and I immediately fell in love. Until I tried cooking on it and the door of the upper stove kept falling open and I burnt my fingers trying to hold the upper door open and using the bottom oven. Not to mention the broiler not working and only being able to use 1/2 of this beautiful bit of machinery. My Landlord told me it couldn't be fixed, and I thought I was up for the challenge to find the Antique Stove Specialist. I had her call RMR and they made a special trip out here outside of their normal business hours. Mike was wonderful! He looked at my door and said, "I don't want to scare you, but this is the worst door I have ever seen. But don't worry, I can fix it!" My old stove refused to heat above 300 degrees. Useless for most baking and all pizzas. I called RMR several times over a period of ten days and always got the voice mail. Finally, I sent an email and got a reply within hours. This is what makes RMR so professional: They did not have the thermostat I need and admitted it may take them awhile and referred me to a different company. I feel I can trust them because they had my best interest at heart and not necessarily their bottom line. I am really disappointed with their service. I called about my 1956 Martha Washington oven door being off its hinge. I was told on the phone that they only work on gas appliances, not electric. I explained it has nothing to do with the oven working or not, it works like a dream. It's just the door hinge. The person on the phone said they could not fix it. How is a hinge an electric/gas issue? I asked if they could come just take a look at it (I don't live far from them) and they said it would be $90 just for the consultation. It's easy to tell what's wrong in one minute. The person on the phone was not knowledgeable and kept asking me to wait while they asked another person questions about my oven. Three times. If there's someone else there who has more information right there then why not just put them on? I got the feeling I was being blown off. It's just a door hinge on a vintage oven. Gas or electric shouldn't matter. It's a hinge. I'm willing to pay the $90 or more if they can actually fix it. I don't care if they can just jimmy it. I don't see how gas or electric has anything to do with a door. If these guys were the experts they claim to be they could do this easy fix. Or they just don't care. read more

These guys are great. We just moved into our home and the old Gaffer and Sattler range need some help. They not only fixed it, but he gave me a run down of all the features. Our only down side with them is that they are so busy they can not take on any new restoration work on old stoves. These guys just made my life so much better! My old O'Keefe & Merritt oven door spring broke and I had to duct tape the door closed. I googled how to fix it myself thinking it would be easy, after all, these old stoves look pretty simple. I called RMR to find out which spring I needed and found out that it's not as easy as you tube videos make it out to be. I ended up making an appointment for the repair. While there, they also cleaned all of the gas line/outlets (forgot the technical term), they made the knobs easy to turn and they fixed the broiler. It's like having a brand new stove. The gas output is more robust than it ever was and I love my stove all over again. The cost for these repairs was very reasonable and like I said, it's like I have a brand new stove! I was ready to junk my old O'Keefe & Merritt stove -- due to a broken oven door and years of having to light the burners with matches -- and called RMR to see if they wanted it for parts. I'm so grateful I did. Mike told me all these things were easy to fix, which he and Rob did, for a fraction of the cost of the new stove I would have had to buy. During their house call, they pointed out all the unique features of my stove, which I didn't even know about. I bought it used years ago, and am not exactly a Food Network-level cook. I'm from out of town visiting my kids and grandchildren. Since my son and his wife bought this older home I always smelled a faint odor of gas which concerned me. RMR is my go-to place for anything having to do with our stove. They have the most amazing customer service and they really know their stuff. Five years ago, Mike and Rena came out to service the 1950s Wedgewood in our new house. They got it to accurate temperature and working perfectly in under an hour - and gave us a lesson on how to use our burners most effectively. A year later, they replaced the oven window glass after I shattered it in a pizza stone situation gone awry. A month ago, I called them again after our house suffered a significant roof leak. Rena came over, helped us turn off the pilot lights, and gave us good advice about how to move the stove to the other room - all for FREE. She refused to take any money for her time. Today, she came by again (for free!) to relight our pilot and tonight she promptly returned a semi-frantic call when I came home and found sparks shooting from the clock panel. She knew exactly what to do, walked us through turning off the electricity to the stove (it didn't need to be plugged in anyway), and saved the day (and night). Now we can all sleep in peace. They took it apart like they were surgeons working on a very sick patient. They went through the most thorough cleaning and inspection, making repairs and replacing parts as needed. They even will recommend companies who will rechrome the oven racks too. They are vintage range experts with a wealth of know. New old stove from RMR is fantastic. It is energy efficient as you can do a lot of cooking with the heat off. It bakes excellent because it is so consistent and precise. Well I've always known my 1951 O'Keefe and Merritt stove was a keeper and now I know RMR Company is too. I had a few little things and one oven that did not work. They couldn't fix the oven lights without taking it (!!!this thing is heavy!!!) into the shop but he left that to be my call. Every thing is fixed, he even repositioned the thermostat ?wire? so it would get a better reading. He talked me out of replacing all of the oven door springs as he thought the one that broke was just a fluke. Professional, courteous, and cleaned up after himself. Doesn't get any better. read more
