Foxon Park selection at Roseland Apizza
    Matthew L.

Foxon Park Beverages is a craft soda company that opened in East Haven, Connecticut in 1922. It was founded by Matteo "Matty" Naclerio, who immigrated from Italy in 1910. Matty bought a property near a running stream in the Foxon section of East Haven and set up his business there. The company was originally known as the Foxon Park Bottling Company, named for the street it resided on. Matty first began bottling spring water from the running stream. Eventually, the operation began making Italian soda. Flavors included kola, ginger ale, root beer, cream soda, orange, grape, cherry, lemon-lime and many others. Foxon Park soon became a staple at local pizzerias. Even today, New Haven-style Apizza (pronounced ah-BEETZ in the local dialect) seems to go hand-in-hand with Foxon Park soda. Some locals have even said that if they walk into a pizzeria and Foxon Park soda isn't served then they will walk out. Today the company is run by Matty's grandson Anthony Naclerio. I've been drinking Foxon Park soda for as long as I can remember. My personal favorite is their White Birch Beer, which is very refreshing with its peppermint notes. Another popular flavor is Gassosa: a clear lemon-lime soda with Italian roots. Probably the rarest flavor is 'Iron Brew': a mixture of kola, root beer and cream soda that has Scottish roots. I will rank a pizzeria's Foxon Park selection based on whether they carry Iron Brew or not. Today, Foxon Park offers 12 regular soda flavors, four diet soda flavors, as well as club soda, tonic water, and bottled water. Although they are mainly found in locations throughout Greater New Haven County, I was pleasantly surprised to find them served at a New Haven-style pizzeria in Washington, D.C. Foxon Park has a small retail store set up in the front of their building. Customers can stop by during business hours and make a case of their favorite Foxon Park flavors. Beverages are available in 12 oz glass bottles, 1 liter and 2 liter plastic bottles. One important fact is that it's CASH ONLY.

My friends will tell you. I almost never use the phrase "Hidden Gem"to describe a restaurant. Most…read moreplaces aren't hidden enough, or gem-y enough. But I'm calling a New Haven Cafe a Hidden Gem -- The Farm Belly. The Farm Belly ("FB") is a farm-to-table cafe in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven. I was recently researching New Haven breakfast spots, and FB came up with a 4.6 Star rating in Yelp, and a 4.8 Star rating on Google. Strong ratings! My sausage, egg and cheese biscuit was delicious. FB posts its Farm Partners right on the wall. My eggs were from @thefarmerscow and the chives were from @beckettfarm . The space is cute and the atmosphere is inviting. FB is adjacent to the Quinnipiac River and some tables have river views. Service was terrific. I spoke with the owners. Love them. For all these reasons, I'm calling The Farm Belly a gem. Since I spend a lot of time on the New Haven restaurant scene, I was surprised the FB name didn't ring a bell at first. There are two primary reasons for that. One, this section of Fair Haven is tucked away in one of the more quiet areas of New Haven, and out-of-towners are more focused on other busier areas of NH. Two, FB's signs don't stand out as you drive by. FB is located in a historical building called "King's Block", and that name still appears out front. There are a couple of small "Farm Belly" signs, but you might miss them if you're driving. Since "King's Block" has served as a hotel, church, fish store, etc. since it was constructed in 1816, you might not even notice that it's a cafe. For these reasons, I think "Hidden" applies as well. The Farm Belly is a Hidden Gem in my book. It's open for breakfast, lunch, coffee and treats 6 days a week.

And we both agreed that the Whitneyville Food Center is as good an Italian deli and grocery store as we have ever visited. When you walk in, you're greeted by long aisles of fruits and vegetables, baked goods, grab and go showcases, prepared salads, deli meats and cheeses, steaks and pork and chicken and sausages, canned goods, pastas, breads and rolls, and lots of grocery items. We picked up 3/4 pound of ground veal ($7.69) for a Thanksgiving Bolognese, a huge 3.5 oz. coconut almond chocolate chip soft biscotti ($3.25), and two deli sandwiches. The sandwiches were on a hard roll and were priced at just $8 each for a pretty good sized sandwich. My Italian Combo had plenty of ham, pepperoni, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and onion on a super sift fresh hard roll. I had half for lunch today and the other half went into the fridge for tomorrow. The customer service was fantastic. The gent in the butcher department was very personable and funny, and the guy who made our sandwiches was friendly and professional. Put everything together, and this was an easy Five Star experience.
