Foxon Park Beverages is a craft soda company that opened in East Haven, Connecticut in 1922. It was founded by Matteo "Matty" Naclerio, who immigrated from Italy in 1910. Matty bought a property near a running stream in the Foxon section of East Haven and set up his business there. The company was originally known as the Foxon Park Bottling Company, named for the street it resided on. Matty first began bottling spring water from the running stream. Eventually, the operation began making Italian soda. Flavors included kola, ginger ale, root beer, cream soda, orange, grape, cherry, lemon-lime and many others. Foxon Park soon became a staple at local pizzerias. Even today, New Haven-style Apizza (pronounced ah-BEETZ in the local dialect) seems to go hand-in-hand with Foxon Park soda. Some locals have even said that if they walk into a pizzeria and Foxon Park soda isn't served then they will walk out. Today the company is run by Matty's grandson Anthony Naclerio. I've been drinking Foxon Park soda for as long as I can remember. My personal favorite is their White Birch Beer, which is very refreshing with its peppermint notes. Another popular flavor is Gassosa: a clear lemon-lime soda with Italian roots. Probably the rarest flavor is 'Iron Brew': a mixture of kola, root beer and cream soda that has Scottish roots. I will rank a pizzeria's Foxon Park selection based on whether they carry Iron Brew or not. Today, Foxon Park offers 12 regular soda flavors, four diet soda flavors, as well as club soda, tonic water, and bottled water. Although they are mainly found in locations throughout Greater New Haven County, I was pleasantly surprised to find them served at a New Haven-style pizzeria in Washington, D.C. Foxon Park has a small retail store set up in the front of their building. Customers can stop by during business hours and make a case of their favorite Foxon Park flavors. Beverages are available in 12 oz glass bottles, 1 liter and 2 liter plastic bottles. One important fact is that it's CASH ONLY. read more

Foxon Park soda is one of the greatest beverages on this earth. The white birch is one of the best companions for saucy Italian food, pizza, pasta, pretty much anything that our grandparents make. I have purchased soda directly from the source this past summer. It was an interesting experience. If you want to buy from the warehouse bring cash. It felt a little bit like I was in a scene from the sopranos. Paying cash for a box of goods directly off a pallet. They don't have a store front or counter or anything. You are basically in the packing area or something. The guy was polite and got me my fix. It made our kids birthday party extra awesome with a cooler full of Foxon Park. read more

It can't hurt to repeat a gospel truth, but I'll put a slightly different spin on it: Foxon Park White Birch Beer is the nectar of the gods. I've been drinking it for decades, especially with pizza or subs. Not long ago, I decided to ingest a few other flavors that I never tried at all or hadn't imbibed in years. Ginger Ale: psych! Iron Brew: psych! Kola: psych (a little syrupy sweet, but that never hurt anyone)! Gassosa: psych! Orange: psych! Root Beer: psych, psych! The moral of my review is: Foxon Park sodas will move mountains, transport you through time & space or simply refresh the palate and throat with a heaven---er, "Staven"---induced smirk. Foxon Park is one of those business I really WANT to love. Family owned, local, quirky, and old-fashioned, except for the fact that a lot of their sodas have artificial flavor. Now I'm not necessarily afraid of ingesting engineered foods, but I just can't suffer artificial flavor, probably thanks to my organic-garden-eating, hippie-parented upbringing. This may be somewhat blasphemous, but I'm going to say it: their birch beer is ruined by being so artificial. Now that that's out of the way, they do have many saving graces: -All their (non-diet) sodas are sugar sweetened, which, irrespective of all the anti-high fructose corn syrup fervor, makes drinks taste way better. -It's cheaper than other glass-bottle sodas pretty much everywhere. -The Gassosa is amazing. Last Friday I drank a 12 oz bottle of cream soda and then found a dark brown substance (about 1 cm long) stuck to the bottom of the container. It looks like a bug. The products themselves are great, but I have an issue with their shipping and also trying to contact a real person. I was buying some iron brew as a fathers day gift and was hoping there would be options for a rush delivery, but they dont specify a date for delivery they only do it by weight. I e-mailed them to try and see if there was any way I can pay for a rush shipping or even have it stopped at a local fed-ex for early pick-up and only a computer replies with vauge information that doesn't answer my questions. So I tried calling and I didn't even get to ask my question when they said they will call me back and only took my name and number and they never got back with me. So if you are trying to get something as a gift from here be sure that you are ok with never talking to a real person if any issues arise and order way in advance. read more
