My friends will tell you. I almost never use the phrase "Hidden Gem"to describe a restaurant. Most places aren't hidden enough, or gem-y enough. But I'm calling a New Haven Cafe a Hidden Gem -- The Farm Belly. The Farm Belly ("FB") is a farm-to-table cafe in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven. I was recently researching New Haven breakfast spots, and FB came up with a 4.6 Star rating in Yelp, and a 4.8 Star rating on Google. Strong ratings! My sausage, egg and cheese biscuit was delicious. FB posts its Farm Partners right on the wall. My eggs were from @thefarmerscow and the chives were from @beckettfarm . The space is cute and the atmosphere is inviting. FB is adjacent to the Quinnipiac River and some tables have river views. Service was terrific. I spoke with the owners. Love them. For all these reasons, I'm calling The Farm Belly a gem. Since I spend a lot of time on the New Haven restaurant scene, I was surprised the FB name didn't ring a bell at first. There are two primary reasons for that. One, this section of Fair Haven is tucked away in one of the more quiet areas of New Haven, and out-of-towners are more focused on other busier areas of NH. Two, FB's signs don't stand out as you drive by. FB is located in a historical building called "King's Block", and that name still appears out front. There are a couple of small "Farm Belly" signs, but you might miss them if you're driving. Since "King's Block" has served as a hotel, church, fish store, etc. since it was constructed in 1816, you might not even notice that it's a cafe. For these reasons, I think "Hidden" applies as well. The Farm Belly is a Hidden Gem in my book. It's open for breakfast, lunch, coffee and treats 6 days a week. read more

This might be my favorite brunch spot in town. This is the cutest restaurant that has enough seating and great windows for a brightly lit brunch. The drinks are always delicious, I tried the banana latte today, a seasonal item, and it was a 5/5. I highly recommend the chorizo breakfast burrito, even the small was the perfect size for me. The pancakes were good as well! You can't go wrong with whatever you order. The menu is very affordable and it's a great place to bring fam or friends!! read more

My friends from New Haven took me on a great morning bike ride and we rode over to The Farm Belly for breakfast and it was delicious. They have vegetarian and vegan options and everything is made fresh in-house. They also have great coffee and dont forget to grab a slice of their housemade pie which is also to die for. Great place to pick up some food or drink! The location is easy to find and right along the river, very cute! The establishment was very clean and the service staff was very nice and helpful. My partner and I decided to stop by for an egg and cheese brioche slider and some turkey bacon. Food was fantastic. Unfortunately her drink came out long after we had received our food.. aside from that, going to The Farm Belly for breakfast was a great experience we will be coming back for more. read more

From the breakfast to the bakery and all the way to the coffee, this place is an absolute gem. My wife and I are from Los Angeles, and we love exploring different breakfast spots, but this one truly takes the cake. We were in Connecticut for a week-long trip and ended up stopping by every single day, sometimes more than once, just to re-up on the coffee. The staff is so sweet and helpful, and the brioche sliders are to die for! Not to mention, they have tables with windows looking out to the river. We will be daydreaming about this spot until we return again, romanticizing our wonderful walks along the river with our Farmbelly Apple Caramel Lattes in hand. read more

We were driving from Boston to New York and decided to stop at this wonderful and scenic restaurant on the way. A charming interior, clean and inviting. The food was healthy, fresh and delicious! I got a delicious breakfast sandwich from the Farm Belly truck at the Wooster Square Farmer's Market last weekend. I loved the Pesto, Egg, and Cheese ($5), which also came with a tomato. The biscuit that it was on was delicious! I appreciated that it wasn't too greasy and packed in an easy-to-hold paper pocket. A side table by the truck included some other condiments, including hot sauce. I would definitely get another sandwich from Farm Belly. read more

I stopped by this food truck a couple of weeks ago at the Wooster Square Farmers' Market. The week of my visit happened to be strawberry week at the market, and this truck had a couple of themed items--strawberry ricotta stuffed French toast and strawberry smoothies. Despite the presence of a small crowd of people awaiting their orders, I decided to order the stuffed French toast ($6), which sounded quite appealing. Fortunately, my order took only about 10 min. to make, so I was able to head home to consume it in less time than I'd anticipated. Unfortunately, I found the stuffed French toast rather underwhelming. While the white bread was light and fluffy, it was also rather sponge-like and a bit too moist for my taste. The amount of filling was rather sparse, and it wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. The strawberry component consisted of jam without any pieces of strawberry, which I was hoping to encounter, and just wasn't that special. I can--and subsequently did--make a version of stuffed French toast that was much more flavorful and complex than this one for a fraction of the cost. When waiting for my order, I noticed that the burger seemed to be quite popular, so perhaps it's the thing to order from this truck. I don't eat beef, however, so unfortunately, that's not an option for me. I'd consider giving this food truck another chance at the Farmers' Market, but I wouldn't seek it out again, and I'd stick to something simple next time. read more

Meg and her food are absolutely amazing! She was kind, generous and helpful during our entire wedding process. We had to change our plans multiple times during COVID and she was patient with us the entire time. We ended up having a small intimate wedding with just family and Meg cooked our meal for the special day. Everyone in our family agreed that it was one of the best meals they have ever eaten. The dinner was fresh and flavorful with her handmade pasta melting in your mouth, salmon perfectly seasoned and a beautiful plate of fresh sautéed vegetables. We ended the meal with homemade pie and ice cream that was just as delicious. She was key in making our wedding day special and we highly recommend her for any event or occasion. read more

Awesome food truck run by a Chef who genuinely cares about every step of the process. During much of the year, they source from over 50 Connecticut farms. Meg is great about developing strong relationships with farmers and customers alike. During the summer, the truck tends to cater more private events, so be sure to check the Facebook page for timely updates about where the truck will be located. Other than that, they tend to be located near The Winchester Lofts in New Haven. The menu has a solid backbone of menu items often with seasonal specials peppered in, which never fail to disappoint. Let's start with the basics: yes this is a food truck. But where can I find them?: at the Winchester lofts; Monday thru Friday; early-2:30 ish pm. Follow them on Facebook for their exact location. What do they serve here?: sandwiches, egg sandwiches, coffee, soda, salads. Why should I go there?: because it's farm fresh. And super legit. The people are adorable. Did I mention it's farm fresh? They source all their products from local CT farms. How can you go wrong? The food's really good too. First time I was here I tried their homemade sausage on a biscuit. Super good. Biscuit was excellent (and it was 4 or 5 dollars!) The next time I got two sandwiches (one for lunch one for dinner... Not both for lunch, jeez...) and they were awesome. The grilled cheese had fresh heirloom tomatoes. The bread was perfect. The grilling was perfect. I don't say that about just any sandwich. Grilled cheeses are not easy to make. The bread has to be toasted perfectly, cheese melted perfectly, not soggy, not too hard- this was spot on. With those fresh tomatoes. Yumm. All for 5$!!! I'll be back for sure! read more
