Everyone recommended this place but my husband was craving Walleye, not BBQ. He checked the menu and sure enough they had Walleye. We made it an early dinner so not too many people. We sat ourselves and the server behind the bar came around, greeted us and took our drink orders. My husband asked if he could order a Walleye filet and they accommodated; he got mashed potatoes and salad for his sides. I ordered The Mayor salad (truly enough food for two) The Walleye was cooked perfectly, and it was delicious. My husband asked for them to heat up the potatoes, unfortunately they were luke warm at best. My salad was a large salad topped with brisket, smoked turkey, bacon and a chicken wing. My husband and I split the chicken wing, it was crispy, but almost too crispy. In the fryer a bit too long. The brisket was a bit dry, but the smoked turkey was perfect. There were two hard boiled eggs, so if you are eating just protein and vegetables this is is your order. There were a lot of jalapenos on it, and lots of crisp greens. I would order it again, but most likely split it with someone. The service was great. While we were there it was getting crowded. This was the second restaurant that we went to where there was only one person taking orders. Fortunately, she had someone running the food out because she was also tending bar, along with the food runner. The standout for me was the monster tots--crispy, golden tater tots piled high with pulled pork BBQ and plenty of melty cheese. Pure comfort food perfection. The ambiance was just as memorable: quirky, fun, and unique. I especially loved their chandelier made out of vodka bottles--such a creative touch that fit the vibe perfectly. The location was fabulous too--just steps away from the iconic Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues, which made the whole experience feel extra special. My only complaint was with the service. I ordered the Trio specifically because I wanted to try the ribs along with two other meats since it was my first visit. When the food came, the ribs had been swapped out for turkey without any explanation. When I asked, the server told me they had run out of ribs. While I get that happens, I would've preferred they let me know first so I could've chosen something else (I'm not much of a turkey fan). The tacos were amazing and they were the special of the night. The tater tots with the briskets were kind of plain, but the brisket meat was very good. We had a male waiter, and he barely waited on us at all, so I was very disappointed as I ran out of drinks. Service is attentive. That's about the best I can say. They've got no beers on draft, the bar menu is super sweet stuff, and the BBQ is just not good. The best were the ribs, which did have good bite and almost some bark. Pulled pork was tender but flavorless. Brisket was not tender or juicy, managed to be fatty at the same time, and did not taste of smoke. In general, everything needed more smoke, flavor, and seasoning. Sauces are either an overly sweet BBQ or the "Fozzie sauce" which is a reddish aioli style. They need some heat! No more "Minnesota spicy"! The winner of the meal was my kid's bacon jalapeño mac and cheese egg roll, which I would have stolen had they not eaten it. read more

The best barbecue in northern Minnesota! Fozzies is a staple every time we go to the lake, some of the best barbecue and service around. Interior is a family barbecue vibe. This time we got the big daddy for takeout (not pictured are the sides or cornbread that come with it as well) and what a great deal this is ($110). Their chicken wings were amazing with a flavorful dry rub that was out of this world. The extremely tender and delectable brisket was my second favorite. Everything on the menu is a hit. Place is fun and has a fun vibe If you're with like a pretty big group. Unfortunately, I'm kind of used to Southern barbecue having lived in South Carolina previously and the barbecue here just doesn't cut it. The one saving grace is that the prices are fairly decent, which is not the case for most barbecue places in Minnesota. Potato salad I think it was was fine and drinks were fine. The vibe is great, but I wasn't a fan of the food. The mac 'n cheese egg rolls were tasty, but too many carbs in one place for me. My chimichanga was the same, heavy starch with "nacho cheese" cheese (not real cheese). I left my first drink, Sex on Diamond Beach, but the Adult Milkshake tasted like cough syrup. We were a large party of 11 hungry bicyclists after the Bemidji Loop the Lake Ride. 10 of us shared the Big Daddy Big Meal. 1 simply had a brisket sandwich. We ordered an extra side of ribs & garlic mashed potatoes (which we did not need since the Big Daddy was more than enough for all of us). Our male server was awesome-he guided us through the drink & food menu (yes-it was less expensive to order the big meal then separate orders). The bbq was on par excellence, the only thing that wasn't the best were the plain-outta-the-can beans (which was is fine but sad next to all the great food). Fizziest sauce is not that great, otherwise most of the food is good. There seems to be a trend of getting the order wrong, or when you tell them NO fozzie sauce they still put it on. I personally dislike the sauce, and most of the people I know don't like it either. But I do awesome like it. And the atmosphere always has this gloomy back room bar vibe. read more

Service is bad. Meat is "smoked" by blasting natural gas at chunks of shitty wood...and that explains the terrible acrid natural gas safety additive taste/smell. Plates are coated with what I surmise is cheese sauce and grease from the last patron, the dishes are clearly not washed appropriately and they probably don't even use hot water. I don't mean to be this person but I am docking a star strictly because of one bartender. The food was AMAZING. Coming into Bemidji from the twin cities for a bachelorette party, I wasn't sure what to expect quality-wise. But wow. I went classic with the pulled pork and could not have been happier. Everyone loved their meals and drinks. My only issue was my drink. I asked the bartender to make a non-alcoholic drink and he said he couldn't?? Like, literally just do tonic water and lime. Plenty of people are in recovery, pregnant, etc and I feel like that was extremely bad taste. I didn't get his name, but if anyone reads this and sees a younger mid-20s gentleman not doing much behind the bar..... Great BBQ - 4 stars! A had to play taxi for a relative and I decided to treat her to a carnivore style lunch in Downtown Bemidji. I quick scan on Yelp led me immediately to Fozzie's. We were both famished and we both wanted leftovers so I opted for the giant "Big Momma" (feeds 3 to 4 adults). Everything was excellent. It was a meat extravaganza with huge quantities. We also got a few extra items, above and beyond what was listed on the menu. In addition to what's listed in the menu, we were also treated to smoked turkey. All of the meats had excellent flavors. I was particularly fond of the beef brisket and the house made sausage links. Yum! The bartender served us at a table. She did an awesome job. I couldn't have asked for anything more as far as the service goes...very attentive but not overbearing. Nice! We visited Bemidji last Saturday and wandered past Fozzie's. We were instantly hooked by the wonderful aroma that escaped the doors as diners left. Fozzie's was busy, but not full as it was midafternoon. We grabbed a table directly in front of the bar in the dining section and browsed the menu and....waited. Servers and a busser worked around us, but... after a good ten minutes we decided we'd give it two more minutes then move on. We did make eye contact with a server who then came over. We ordered tacos and nachos which were delivered promptly. Unfortunately, the nachos were served almost ice cold. We expected a pile of chips covered in melty cheese and smoky goodness. Instead, our nachos came with right out of the refrigerator-cold tomatoes, sauce, and cheese. The brisket was a couple of degrees above room temperature at best. We did point this out to our server and asked that they at least be warmed up under a heat lamp. Apparently, the heat lamp was out of order and there were no other options. At best, the nachos warmed a degree or two simply by osmosis. The difference between a disappointing and dynamite meal is simply attention to detail. That was the missing ingredient. read more

A very nice little setup in Downtown Bemidji for a BBQ joint. The food is pretty good with some pretty interesting options, as well as a large bar section. Service was just OK on our visit, as they seem understaffed. First and foremost, the Pitmaster is a nice way to try a few variations on their food. You get the Monster Fries, Ribs, and Mac & Cheese Egg Roll. The egg roll is really good. The fries are decent, but give you a nice sampling of the Fozzie Sauce, which reminds me of Yum Yum Sauce from Benihana. The burgers and sandwiches are huge, enough to split. I was a little unimpressed with the Pulled Pork sandwich though. The burger was good, albeit a slightly different flavor (almost smoky). Came in tonight and the place smelt funny. Took forever to get our drinks. The waitstaff gal was dressed kinda slutty but sexy looking. Food took over 45 minutes to get to us and it wasn't all that busy. The bathrooms were really gross and one of the employees was smoking pot in the bathroom. Not a very ideal situation. Updating based on most recent experiences here.... So let me start with.. food is great. No issue there. When they have it. And I'll say that it sucks having to write a negative review about a restaurant that makes good food. :-( Problem is 100% on restaurant management. 4 of the last 6 times we tried to order they are out of whatever we're trying to order. Last time we tried to place a large order on the phone, they were out of almost everything we tried to order and they told us we need to call first thing in the morning to place an order of that size. OK, fine. So round two here. Just tried to place a large order, and called first thing in the day (per their request last time) and they said that to take a large order for 230PM we had to wait to call until 200PM. So we wait to call until 200 and they're out of what we want again. Both of these events were on weekdays, not the weekends. They really should be able to manage their supply side better than this. It's rediculiously frustrating that they are out of stock of their staples so often. I don't understand why they can't manage that better. Will update if this improves. Until then, just be prepared to not get what you want when you go here.... To the Fozzie's team.... please fix your ordering so we can eat the awesome BBQ that you guys make when you have it, and I can update this review to 4 or 5 stars much more in line with your food!!! read more

The onion rings were great, and the beer was cold. The service was terrible. We sat at the bar and 5 young adults on duty, all behind the bar when we areived. No one greeted us, or said anything to us. We almost left. Finally someone served us. Skup this place unless all you are after is slightly better than bar food with gastric destress. The meats were DRY and flavorless. The waiter was nice but clueless. Drink orders were 20+ mins out. I had to send mine back twice even though he wrote it down. He rarely showed up at the table. We spent 20 mins waiting for the check & 5 minutes, flagging him down for it. The spoon in the float was NASTY covered in hard food particles. Note: We were there at approx 4pm, and it was definitely not rush hour. We had to check out Fozzie's barbecue when we were visiting Bemidji. As soon as you walk in, the smell of smoke hits you smack on the nose. Our waiter Isaac was friendly and working hard to give us a positive experience since it was our first visit. The first thing I had to try was a cocktail called the Naughty Corgi, because like the owners, I have two Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Fireball (cinnamon), Irish Cream and Butterscotch Schnapps with a whipped cream topper; yummy, fun and adorable, just like an actual corgi! Then I ordered the mac and cheese egg rolls. These needed to be fried to a more golden brown, but there was a new cook in training so I'll let it slide. The inside was the same mac and cheese as the side order which was really creamy and cooked to a nice firm consistency. I was able to get a half order of ribs, though they were the last in the house, which was shocking that a barbecue restaurant would be out of ribs, brisket and fries at 7pm on a Wednesday night. The ones I had were very good; deep smoky flavor and the sauce, which wasn't really necessary and I used sparingly, had a sweet, medium spicy back note which made a pleasant pairing. Fantastic food! The BBQ is to die for. We had the brisket Philly and the loaded Mac and Cheese with sausage. And the beer was nice and cold!

What's a person got to do to get great barbecue in this state? Answer smoke your own. This is a bar that also serves barbecue. This is not a special barbecue restaurant by any means. I ordered half brisket and some was fatty and dry. It seemed reheated and no smoke ring. I also ordered bacon Jalapeño macaroni and cheese egg rolls. I hardly saw any bacon but there was bits of green peppers. Maybe the pulled pork is better? And they charge $1 something to use a credit card. Probably won't return. read more
