After several years of kicking a custom frame job down the road, I finally decided to buck up and get it done. I looked around my neighbourhood to find a place nearby since it looked like my regular store had shut down. I couldn't find *anything* nearby but Frame123 wasn't too far out and looked near where my previous store was. I texted the shop owner and while it took a few days to get an appointment set up, it was entirely reasonable and within the same week. I headed on down at the appointed time and imagine my surprise when I found that this new shop was located in the exact same spot as the previous shop I used to go to! When I walked in, I recognized the owner as the same guy (and he asked me if I'd been there before as well). Apparently this new shop is the same guy, same stock, everything as before, except new name! I was so happy because I've loved all his previous work before and the prices are good. I spent some time with the owner, working through different mat and frame options for the two pieces I brought in and between his opinion and my tastes, we got both of them worked out pretty quick. I'm still waiting to pick them up (but it's only been a week and well within the estimate I was given) but I trust that they'll look amazing. The shopfront doesn't seem like it's open--but don't hesitate to text or e-mail the shop to arrange a time for drop off and pick up! Peter, the owner of Frame123, is a master craftsman who takes great pride in his work. He did a fantastic job on 6 paintings, 2 of which were half to three-fourths the length of a wall. These were floating frames around oil paintings. Peter was able to provide me the paintings on a rolling basis, approximately one to two every two weeks. At the very end, he was incredibly considerate and even helped deliver to me the largest paintings, which otherwise would have been difficult to transport in my personal vehicle. He dreamed up the structure of the frame and then built it to perfection. It was incredibly detailed work that involved sawing, sanding, painting, more painting, gluing, and mounting. He did a fabulous job and even came to our place to install it! I feel the final product is truly a work of art. Frame123 - The Books Installed - Framing Near Me - San Francisco, California

My wife and I wanted to get a large photograph professionally framed. We took it to 4 different frame stores in the city, asked about options, and got estimates. Peter Ong, the owner of The Great Frame Up, not only spent a huge amount of time being very patient with us while we picked through pretty much every frame he has in the store, but he outdid the competition in the following ways: 1. His prices were cheaper, for the exact same materials, by anywhere from 10-30% 2. Most places had only one type of high end glass, called museum glass, that had both anti-glare (looks like there is no glass there at all) and 98% UV protection. This glass is VERY expensive. At most places, the next step down is conservation glass, which still has UV protection but no anti-glare. If you want the anti-glare, you have to go with museum glass. Not with Peter. He has an amazingly clear anti-glare glass that isn't 98% UV protected. It has around 50-60%, the same as standard glass. But if you aren't going to hang your photo or painting in direct sunlight, you probably don't need the 98% protection. And if you do get some fading, as long as you took the photo, you can always just swap out the print for $10 or so. At the very least, it's nice to have this option. 3. Speed. Peter framed this large photo for us, with matte, glass, mounting, and frame, in LESS THAN ONE WEEK. No rush charge, in fact we didn't even ask him to do it quickly. But he said he'd try to get it done by father's day, and sure enough, he did. We will go back to Peter for sure the next time we need something framed, and you should too. read more

So, I'm sitting at work bored out of my mind on a Monday. How do I remedy this? I decide to enter an international photography contest just because I can, and what the hay, I get chosen. Now the gallery wants me to mat the photo and frame it in all these specific dimensions with no glass but maybe plexiglass or a plastic-acrylic hybrid and a certain shade of black wooden frame and all these other ridiculously specific demands. So what do I do? I Yelp. I Yelp my ass off. Peter really does live up to the hype of his perfect score. Not only is he the most competitively priced (I called A LOT of frame shops), but his relatively lower prices do not show up in the quality of work that he produces. Seriously. I have never seen a mat cut more perfectly. Immaculate. I should know - I went to architecture school. A lot of mat cutting in those places. Peter even gave me a few pointers on framing and art exhibit etiquette. If this whole photography stuff takes off, I am definitely looking forward to working with Peter exclusively just because he is honestly a good guy and I really do believe in the whole pay it forward and random acts of kindness stuff. The local competition wanted to charge me hundreds more for the same job. Quality: The work I had done here looks AMAZING. The local competition? So bad I had them start over again. Speed: Each piece I brought here took approximately one week to complete. The local competition takes more than two weeks. Location: Right near Van Ness and Union. We were looking to get a unique piece of art that we got from Nashville framed and because of the great reviews we checked out The Great Frame Up. When we arrived, the person there was very friendly and was easily able to walk us through the various options and offer his feedback as well. We had looked at a few other frame places but ended up to go here. The prices aren't cheap but the quality is good. Our frame took longer than the 3 weeks we were told and unfortunately no one ever called to tell us this. The frame was on back order and didn't come until after the three weeks which we were disappointed in. I just collected #2 of 6 pieces that I am having framed here. What can I say, it may be January for everyone else, but it is Christmas every time I go in there. To start - picking out a custom frame for your priceless pieces of work is beyond fun. Peter is great - patient with your umming and ahhing - and helps you along to make your final choice. My first two pieces look amazing as a result. Price-wise, I can't comment, as I haven't framed work anywhere else, so I have no idea, but personally, with the service and the results, I say it is worth it worth it worth it. I did spend a hefty amount in total, but Peter was willing to work with my finances as well - which was incredibly helpful to me. Finally, when the framer gets as excited (or more) about framing a particular piece - it's simply enthralling. Said piece is now on my wall (what is it you ask? Well, it's a man carrying a whip in a sort of Legend kinda way - framed beautifully in this antiqued wooden frame which compliments the sepia tones of the print - the frame has signed and sealed the image entirely). My first piece was framed within a day or so (even though I was told it would take a week) - and I said that there was no rush on the last 5 pieces, as there really isn't - 2nd was completed within a week. The Great Frame Up is a wonderful place to go for quality service at very reasonable rates. Peter Ong does a stellar job. I needed a picture fixed that had been hung in the bathroom and had fallen, cracking the glass. Mr. Ong offered to refit the picture with new glass, and even sealed the back side to prevent moisture from seeping in and onto the print. Grand Total: 23 bucks. He also set an unusually sized print (11"X26") on a very attractive black and gold frame for $70. Grand Total: less than $100 for 2 quality frames. I went to 4 different frame shops and received bids only to find Peter was not only the best in customer service but had a good price for the quality and service I received for my first custom framing experience. I've been going to Peter at The Great Frame Up for 5+ years. He's done about a dozen pieces for me. His quality is excellent -- he does the work himself. What's particularly helpful is that Peter helps you pick the best frame & mat combination for each piece. He's willing to sit with you for 20 minutes talking through the options, showing you exactly what it will look like. And he voices his opinion, gently-but-firmly. For a non-artistic person like me, this is incredibly helpful. He's really patient -- "Peter, can I see that mat again? What about with that color frame?" -- and most importantly, he's really *enthusiastic* about helping each piece shine. He's also very practical about pricing -- if adding that extra inch of mat is going to double the cost, he'll let you know and help you keep it on budget. Tips ==== - If you're hanging anything in the bathroom, Peter will add silicone gel sealant at no charge. This prevents humidity from getting into your art. Just remember to tell him since it's non-standard. - Non-reflective Museum glass is an option I always struggle with. It's about 5x the price of normal glass, but you can really see the art better. I've only selected it on the one piece of "nice" art I have. Regular anti-UV glass is fine for everything else. - If you need a piece done by a specific date (e.g. a birthday), let him know in advance, and he'll deliver. read more

I went in based on the good Yelp reviews and was really impressed with how Ellen made some preservation suggestions for the drawing I brought it to replace the glass I had broken. The drawing was from 1922 and was done by my grandmother, so I was glad to learn about acid-free paper for the mat and ways to prevent the drawing from yellowing and eroding. The price was really fair at $46 for a new mat and glass and treating it. I look forward to picking it up. read more

I had recently framed a print before i moved to san francisco and had it shipped here by UPS. They heavily damaged my print during shipment and had to get it reframed. The print was in such disrepair that i was snubbed by a few other frame places before I walked into The Great Frame Up. I explained what happened, asked if it could be framed just for sentimental value. Sometimes web sites make it 'look better than it is'. In this case - in person is better than the site and the site is pretty awesome! Peter was amazing as was his team mate (whose name I didn't get - I apologize). I brought in a pastel painting that I had unfortunately damaged the edges and another piece I just came home with from Paris. My place looks like a pied a terre, which is exactly the look I was going for. The museum glass on any piece - a must! The communication was incredible. The education amazing - I had no idea about the 'beading' or 'trim' that was available to put inside a frame to add depth and color. It was just an incredible experience and I had high hopes for when I returned - and was beyond impressed. And, as if there could possibly be more positives - they completed the pieces early so I could have them up on the walls for a NYE dinner party. Above and beyond. Worth every penny. Hands down best framing services in the city! Everywhere else is a total ripoff and doesn't use the same care that the owner of Frame 123 does... I needed a print framed that was a standard size, however, I couldn't find a frame that I liked online or at any retailers. I was surprised that so many other shops quoted me outrageous prices ($300+) for something you could buy at a retailer for under $100.
