I don't think I knew what hot was until we came to Italy in summer. It's hard to find air conditioning that approximates what we're used to in the U.S., so it's soak-through-your-clothes-sweaty outside, and medium sweaty in many indoor spaces, too. I ran into this place while shopping for leather and almost passed it up due to my limited time. Sitauted above the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre in one of the oldest buildings in Florence, was the perfect way to experience my first dinner in Italy. I'm not a fan of seafood at all, but I took a gamble and followed the 'when in Rome..' saying (even though I was in Florence) and order the shrimp gnocchi in a tomato sauce. I found it a little un-nerving when faced with three dead shrimps staring back at me, with their eyes wide, but I told told to attack the dish and finally took delight in ripping their heads off and de-shelling and eating the sea beasties. The meal was beautiful, light and fresh. The creaminess of the tomato with the softness of the gnocchi and shrimp really complimented each other nicely. October 2012... My last day in Florence... Walking along borgo dei Greci in search for a lunch spot, I saw Francesco with a nice smile and was greeted with a grand 'Buongiorno'. He and the server Nicolo (Francesco jokingly told me to call him Machiavelli) gladly helped me with my menu. My meal: Bruschetta al Pomodoro - perfect portion and it was seasoned well. Tagliata di manzo with arugula and tomatoes - Cooked to a tender medium, beautifully grilled on the outside, red and juicy on the inside, Francesco said to put olive oil and a bit of SnP. Awesome! Schiatcchiata all'uva - Had to ask Nicolo to spell this one out. Glad to try something new as I would usually order a Tiramisu or panna cota. It's like a sweet focaccia bread with grapes baked in it. Each grape still popping with juice! Very refreshing. Limoncello - to settle things down and end a great meal They took their time serving each course and I happily waited as it made me confident that each dish was made fresh. Slow service is Good service in Europe and I was on vacation... so I was glad to savour every minute of my meal and people watch. I shook Francesco's hand and said (with my very limited Italian) "It was my last day in Firenze and thank you for a very memorable meal." This restaurant is located in one of the oldest buildings in Florence over the ruins of a Roman amphitheater, and specializes in typical Tuscan dishes such as Florentine beef. It's located on a side street off of the Piazza della Signoria, a public square which features a variety of statues by Renaissance artists. (It's the street directly behind the statue of Neptune in this square. In fact, from the outdoor patio of Francescovini you have a lovely view of Neptune's butt at the end of the street. In case you didn't know, Florence has a lot of statues of nude men.) This restaurant had been recommended to us by one of the locals as a place to go for a good steak, so my husband and I split a huge bistecca alla Florentine between us (medium rare, of course), along with a side of roasted potatoes. (Four-course dinners are usually the norm in Italy, but we had already had a large three-course lunch that day and wanted to have enough room to do justice to dinner.) The steak was everything we had been promised - tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned.
