I make sure I stop by Francies every time I visit Des Moines. It's my pre-flight ritual to ensure my belly gets filled with the best fries in the US. I love this place and the sandwiches are insane. The grinder and chicken cheese steak are perfect. And they have an epic cheese burger if you are feeling something a little more OG. The staff are amazing and they are always hooking everyone up with extra fry portions and good conversation. I love Francies. read more

ABSOLUTELY So good I keep forgetting to take pics before I dig in! We live to get their food to go! Sandwiches come with a choice of a side, we get the HUGE portion of fries that are ALWAYS still hot and crispy after the 8-12 minute drive home. My favorite is the tuna melt, toasty not dry bread plenty of tasty not fancy tuna without too much overbearing sauce or onion. My folks enjoy their burgers and a rarity, Italian sausage patty sandwich. All also complimented with a pickle spear. We usually get it to go because unfortunately seating in house can be challenging for short or large people. We wish they had fewer high tables and a couple short tables that are not a fixed table booth. read more

Food was ok pretty much your typical bar food! Overall would definitely come back just for a quick bite!! The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was very nice!!! I would recommend if your going with a large group get there early it's not a lot of sitting areas! I didn't get the soup of the day but vegetable lentil surely sounded yummy!!! Francies has great food. We always go here when we're hungry and don't want to be disappointed. The food is consistently good, fries are always crispy, and staff is always attentive. Lunch time can be very busy, it's a seat yourself situation, so if you see a table grab it! I would say this is one of the better restaurants on the South Side. Never any complaints. Try the philly steak and cheese or the French dip! My personal favorites but the entire menu is delicious! If you're in it for the apps, the nachos or the wings are the way to go. I've tried just about everything in the menu but my favorite is the Italian Sausage Sandwich (not to be confused with the Grinder). The Rarebit Burger and the Buffalo chicken Philly are favs of many. I tried Francies for dinner on a recommendation. I sat at the bar. There were two bartenders in duty. Both were friendly and attentive. The menu is pretty typical bar and grill fare. Burgers, wings, and such. I had the Italian Sausage with fries. It was a good choice. It is a grilled sausage patty spicy but not overpowering. Topped with Mozzerella cheese and marinara sauce. Served on focacia bread. It was excellent although I had to let it cool down for ten minutes before I could take a bite. They have a small selection of craft brews on draught and the standard domestic beers in bottles. It is rather small with about 6 bar seats and 10 to 12 tables. It can get crowded. Which it was when I was there. But, don't let that stop you. It's worth it if you have to wait for a table. read more

Cozy little spot on Fleur just up the road from Wakonda Club. The place is very an unassuming from road but as you pull up you can start to notice the charm. The inside is casual and well kept. I went for the con queso burger because it looked unique and it did not disappoint. My fries were crispy and our waitress was a peach. I will definitely return. read more

Where do we start. Service was terrible. She was friendly but just a terrible waitress. That was the only debate between 1 and 2 stars. They had no pens left when they brought the bill and just seemed extremely unorganized. That's where it goes downhill. We were absolutely disgusted at this place for numerous reasons. The pepper sandwich tasted like cleaning chemicals. The tenderloin tasted like nothing. They reuse glassware and when my drink went to the bar to get refilled, another server took it and served it to someone else. The cook was scraping the the grunge off the grill while there was still food cooking on it! All of that grunge was getting into other people's food. Then the bartender is using the glassware to scoop ice from the bin. The most wrong thing a bartender could do. read more

Cheap brews! Vintage sports prints and lots of Tv's to watch the game! On a whim we went out to Francies for the first time, for a post dinner brew. It was great! Super clean, family owned, and a fun atmosphere if your a sports fan. They have rad old sports prints, from Babe Ruth to Joe Namath. The beers were super cheap and we tried our first ever Moscow Mule which comes in a very cold copper cup and contains vodka and ginger babe! I dug it. After a few drinks we were getting snacky so we ordered some fries, and we were brought out a huge order of fries for 3.50 what a deal! I dug this place and left super happy! read more

Having to downgrade this place for one reason: they have no real vegetarian options. I recently decided to go the vegetarian route and that might keep me from being able to go here. They used to have a veggie sandwich but don't anymore. People like myself are now restricted to very simple salads and eating sides like fries and coleslaw. The last time I was there, one of their soups of the days was cheesey potato soup - I thought that was safe. Even that had meat in it; the only cheesey potato soup I've ever had that included meat. I still like the people and the atmosphere and know that they have good food for meat eaters. But it is their lack of menu items for non-omnivores that forces me to bump them down to three stars. read more

I had heard about the delicious food at Francies for years. My brother and his kids often get the Italian sausage sandwich and they've shared with me - well, a bite and fries. So good. Heard the soups were wonderful too. Finally stopped by for lunch. Got the minestrone and the French dip. OMG. That is the best French dip in town. The roast beef was tender and the combination of the grilled onions and focaccia bread added such a great flavor. The bread was soft and crispy. Can't wait to eat there again. My mom got the soup. So far, the best burger and fries i have had in Des Moines. we walked in at 12:20, the place was busy, and we were served right away. the food was hot and fresh, and the fries are AWESOME! we had the swiss mushroom burger, and the traditional with pepper cheese. fresh veggies on the side, and the table and surrounding were extra clean. I cannot believe I have forgotten to review this one. It's the food for sure. That little kitchen turns out some of the best bar food I have ever had. Don't expect gourmet or anything out of the ordinary but it is top shelf quality all the way. Best fries in the city IMO, and those guy's do a great job at everything food I have ever had over 25+ years. Go to Francies on night two, read the menu and thought we were going to be 0-2. I was so wrong. Coming from the Buffalo, NY region, my expectations for wings gets lower the further away i travel. I have visited Francies a few times now since moving to DSM. Every time they are full but we always seem to find a table quickly. For being busy every time we have been there it seems like the wait staff keeps up pretty well. The beers were cold and tap prices seem to be pretty average. The food we had were burgers and fries. Both were good but not to die for. Still I will be back again because I enjoyed the sports bar atmosphere. read more
