"The Pear Pizza" (white with poached pear, gorgonzola, smoked bacon, mozzarella, drizzled with local honey)
    Matthew L.

Fire Andrews Mobile Kitchen is an artisanal wood-fired pizza truck based in Clinton, Connecticut that has been running since 2011. It was founded by father and son Frank Andrews and Max DeMusis. Frank worked as an AT&T customer service and sales representative for 25 years, but in 2009 he found himself as a victim of corporate downsizing. He had enjoyed cooking and catering as a hobby for several years, and now he decided to pursue it as passionate new career. He began crafting pizzas and calzones from his self-made wood-fired oven. Each pie is made using local farm fresh ingredients. Max also assisted him throughout the beginning stages of the pizza-making venture. After several friends and private customers sampled their culinary offerings, they urged the duo to go into business and serve wood-fired pizza to the public. They started off with a vending food cart and served pizza as a street food. When the business took off, the duo were able to secure a mobile pizza oven. Today they have two mobile ovens and a third enclosed unit for year round use. Max traveled to Italy in 2013 to study and also ended up working in kitchens throughout the Campania and Lombardy regions. He would return to the States with an expanded knowledge and passion for the Italian culinary arts. Today the pizza truck can be found at various farmers' markets, breweries, wineries, festivals and private functions throughout Southern Connecticut. I recently sampled some of Frank Andrews' pizza at the 2023 Closer To Free Ride. I had just cycled the 65-mile route and there is always a nice collection of food trucks at the post-ride festivities. The pizza truck was one of the food trucks that day; I had previously sampled their pizza at the 2019 CTF Ride. The one pizza that I was really looking forward to was their specialty: "The Pear Pizza" (white with poached pear, gorgonzola, smoked bacon, mozzarella, drizzled with local honey). I think that this combo is absolutely delicious! I think the concept of putting apples and/or pears on pizza is a brilliant one and it's clearly underused. I wished that more pizzaioli experimented with apples and pears because they make a great Autumn-inspired pie. I can't wait to try Frank Andrews' pizza again!

The folks working the oven, especially Max the chef, are incredibly efficient and customer-service oriented.

What brings me to find the time to complain about a darn pizza!?!…read moreClinton location... We walked in and order a pizza to-go and asked to sit down and have a beer as we waited. Only two tables had two people at each and then the two of us. While seated, I smelt burnt pizza and I said (out loud) "I hope that's not my pizza". I heard someone behind the counter chuckle, although, couldn't see the counter. I have no freakin' idea why I didn't check the pie before I left, but my friends & I probably have eaten a thousand+ dollars worth of pizza at this place as we're from the area. My big mistake was not checking the pie, especially after I smelled one burning, but mine came out quite a while after that. I put it in the back of the vehicle and drove it to a friends house. Opened it up and it was burnt, and it was strange, because it wasn't burnt evenly. I didn't even ask for it crispy like I normally do. I called Grand and our waitress answered. I explained the issue and the first thing she said was "did you eat it", I said "no". she gave me her cell number to send pictures of the burnt pie. I sent them to her and did not get a reply. Half hour went by, so I texted her "sooooo". No reply. I told my husband to swing by Grand because I was headed out of town the very next morning. He didn't have the chance. So while out of town, I called two weeks later and said "Hey, I never heard back from you about the burnt pizza". The first person handed the phone to another person that said "We can't help you when it was 2 weeks ago". I said "Well, I texted the person that waited on us and I did not hear a reply. Whose number is 860.....?" She said she had to check. Next person to pick up the phone tells me that the manager remembers the pictures and said that it wasn't "THAT" burnt! Lololol. Seriously, whats a large pizza cost to make with some veggies and 1/2 sausage? Let me tell you, far less than what we pay for one. Anyway, Sal's & Alforno and Saybrook Pizza in Old Saybrook are so consistently better and much friendlier. But, I already passed those before I thought to bring a pizza to my friends. Guess I'm SOL
