Fall isn't fall until I make a visit to Franklin Cider Mill! With the pandemic this year, a visit to Franklin looks a bit different, but they made it pretty seamless! You can order ahead of the time - right here through Yelp - and park in special, designated spots for order pickup - so you're basically in and out in the span of a minute! We did take an extra minute to walk around the grounds a little bit, but it was filled with a bit too many people for our comfort level, so we turned around and happily departed with our cider & our donuts in hand. If you want things other than cider & donuts, I don't believe they were available for order ahead, so you'd have to park in the general parking lot and stand in line with the mass of people. But the lines are very organized and everyone was masked up (on a Saturday afternoon!) & social distancing, so if you're comfortable with that, that is definitely a feasible option! read more

We hadn't been to Franklin Cider Mill in over 15 years or more and I'm glad we returned for the sake of nostalgia. It was much smaller than I remembered, which wasn't a big deal because it was cold and snowy and wasn't busy. I like that the cider press is right inside the front door, though was a little bummed that it wasn't operating when we were there. Again, not a big deal, but it is fascinating to watch the process. They had loaves of apple cake bread that looked delectable, but there were no prices and with the outlandish price of cider and doughnuts I didn't even want to ask. We made our way to the counter quickly because it's not heated inside and was uncomfortably cold. After purchasing a half gallon of cider and a dozen doughnuts, I couldn't wait to get to the car and dive into the doughnuts. They were still warm!!! We poured a couple cups of cider and I took a bite of the doughnut. The texture was amazing because it was warm and ever so slightly crisp on the outside. Unfortunately, it was really, really oily and very bland. You could squeeze oil out of the doughnuts. Epic disappointment. The cider was decent, but nothing to write home about. For the price neither was worth it. For $5 more we could have bought honeycrisp cider. No thank you for that price difference. We threw half of the doughnuts away, which we do not do at my house. Ever. Well, except these doughnuts. :0 So it was a nice visit for a trip down memory lane, and I'm glad we went, but I'm happy we live closer to a few other cider mills. We had a great time here. I've been coming to Franklin since I was a baby. It's a classic cider mill. They have all of the great traditional elements. They have hot donuts, apple pies and treats, honey products, sausage and cheeses, fudge, and much, much more. We love the big water wheel that churns, a must take photo op spot. The little creek is adorable. They have little nooks where you can buy candied nuts, hot dogs, or get your face painted. The crowd was lively and festive when we were there. If the line is too long inside the main building, you can purchase cider and donuts outside, or on the side of the building. We got the cider slush, it was very sweet and tasty. The lines tend to get long but move fast. The prices are okay, a bit pricey, and they only offer one type of traditional cider donuts. They are great hot, a little greasy. This place is a Michigan classic and a must every Fall season!!! You roll in and grab a spot in the free parking lot and make your way to the entryway. At the entryway there is a beautiful and enchanting flowing river with various colored rocks on the bottom sand if your lucky you'll even get to see some ducks chilling out. There are benches strewn here for you to sit on and enjoy the scenery for a bit before or after you satisfy your cider mill craving. You walk over a wooden bridge to the rest of the cider mill and make the choice to check out either the water wheel, apples and apple products, donuts and cider or hit up the snack bar. On this trip I decided to hit up the donuts and cider first. It's all the way in the back and usually will have a long line but no worries the line moves quickly. I was just quickly stopping in for an afternoon treat with a friend today so we kept it simple and ordered 2 donuts @ $1.25 each and a small jug of apple cider for $5. Franklin Cider Mill is the fall season in a nutshell for me. I mean I'd eat their cinnamon spice doughnuts ANY DAY but it was particularly perfect on this fall day. It was pretty easy to find via GPS & the parking lot is clearly marked as the Franklin Cider Mill parking lot. You have to walk up & to the left for the doughnuts/cider, but don't pass up the little stands, the water wheel! The Honeycrisp apples at the stands seemed pretty expensive at $2/apple (for context: $1.69 down the street at Trader Joe's for an organic one. Conventional was even cheaper.) Once we entered the building for the doughnuts and cider, the line was long but it moved. All the baked goods (like the apple cheesecake and apple pull-apart bread) lined up along the line were super tempting. I'm definitely coming back for these next time! Once you get up to one of the 5 cashier stands, there's a small menu that lists out the doughnuts & cider.12 oz hot cider ($4) and 1/2 dozen doughnuts ($6) came out to be $10. CASH ONLY BY THE WAY! Honestly, I thought that was pretty pricey. The cold cider price point is a bit lower - I believe $4 gets you a pint or something, but damn their margins must be pretty good here. Either way, it's worth it! The doughnuts are a dream - there's no frosting, no fancy frills, just a plain ol' delicious old world German recipe. I practically inhaled them - they were fluffy, warm with just the right amount of spice. I usually prefer old fashioned cake doughnuts but I could eat these all day. I'm really not sure the hype surrounding this place. Nostalgia, maybe? My boyfriend and I had an hour to kill before dinner and I was craving donuts. I'm not one of those people who needs apple picking, pumpkin patches, or carnival activities to make me happy. I come to cider mills to enjoy a nice cold cup of cider and devour some delicious donuts. Even then, I felt very claustrophobic during my stay. There is a small opening to a river and some benches and a bridge, but that's about it. People just standing around everywhere, so social distancing. There was a very kind and wonderful lady working to help mandate masks and to let us know which line to use to purchase cider and donuts but that's about it. The donuts and cider were a bit mediocre if you ask me. The donuts came out hot and fresh, but they didn't wow me. They are plain donuts with a cinnamon spice. That's the only option for donuts here. Will I eat the whole dozen I bought? Absolutely. They just weren't my favorite. The cider was kinda tasteless? Very happy we only bought a pint. I had a wonderful time today visiting an cider mill for the first time ever in my life. The mill is located in Franklin. And it was such a unique experience, very different from other experiences I've had in the SF Bay Area such as cherry picking, etc. At the cider mill, we got to see the entire process from prepping the milled apples, pressing them, to bottling the fresh cider. After that we got to taste literally freshly pressed cider. And I never knew that fresh cider went super well with cinnamon cake donuts (they call them cider donuts here). Honestly I initially thought it was an unusual pairing: donuts and cider, but it totally worked - I even dunked my donut into my ice-cold cider :) I think the cinnamon in the donut is what helps pair the donuts well with the cider. At the cider mill they also sold a bunch of goodies to take home such as jams, maple syrup, apple butter, and lots of baked goodies, and they even sold cider-marinated dogs, which we tried as well. Franklin Cider Mill was a new place for us and since it was Labor Day weekend, we thought why not venture to this side of town to check it out. The place was hopping which was nice to see so many people and families out enjoying the beautiful weather. For first timers, it was a bit overwhelming (in a good way) to take it all in. But after walking around and seeing all they had to offer, it was time to purchase a few things and take in more of the scenery. I must admit, they had plenty of help and everything was running like a well oiled machine. They do know how to handle large crowds which was impressive. I can see why it's a popular destination for so many people. I liked the old fashioned water wheel, cider bottlers and the original governor that controlled the speed of the old water wheel. All were on display and added an interesting touch to our visit. In all honesty though, there were a few drawbacks that didn't sit well with us. They don't accept credit cards. Yes, cash only. We don't walk around with a lot of cash in our pockets since pretty much everywhere you go, including the cider mill we usually go to on our side of town, they all accept credit cards. We picked up a jar of preserves, a bag of apples and some sparkling cider and went to pay. We both stood at the register scrambling around in our pockets for every bill and loose change we could find when she told us cash only, which was quite embarrassing. We were hungry walking around and seeing everyone eating their lunch, donuts and cider. We were going to order a couple of hot dogs and cider slushes, but after adding up how much it would be, we decided against it. For two hot dogs and two slushes, we were looking at paying about $20! No way were we going to pay that much when we could get so much more food for our money at many other places. This place has become somewhat of a tradition stop for me annually, although it's not spectacular in any way. The donuts are horrid but the cider is good. If you pair the donuts with the cider immediately after each bite they're much more palatable. There's always a lot of bees trying to drink your cider and White people feeding the ducks. The scenery is nice and it's probably a good place for kids. But whatever the reason, it stuck with me as tasting watered down and I can't shake it. Secondly, this place is cash only. no credit cards? really? Surprising. We all stood there like deer in headlights not knowing what to do with ourselves. I do normally carry cash but its just so weird that a place this size doesn't take cards. Oh, and this place is double the price of the other places we went to as well. No, I'm not cheap, but it really is double the price. Be prepared to shell out some cash y'all! BUT, I will say, as Yelpers, this was the place where I think that we had the MOST fun of all. On the bonus side, this place is so much fun, and worth the trip. Before I get in to this review, know that I've been to Franklin many times, not just today. So this is my overall rating based on all my experiences there. Today: yes, I knew it would be crazy crowded, because it's a nice fall day with decent temps. I got to the cider mill and it took me about 5-10 minutes to get a parking spot. There isn't a ton of parking in general; they now have "one way only" signs so that's helpful, if people would READ them. PRO'S: .the cider is delicious. Donuts are tasty but if I could only choose one, I'd do the cider. .There's a lot to choose from, in the main building they have pies and other deliciousness. You can buy candied almonds outside too and produce .it's very old and you can see the mill part (fun for kids). CONS: .they seriously need to expand their parking lot. It literally took me like 15-20 minutes just to GET OUT of the lot today. Next time I'd maybe park at another Franklin Rd business, if they allow it, and walk. .THE BEES. I was just doing takeout today but whenever I've hung around / sat on one of their benches there to eat/drink, the bees have always been a major annoyance. .it's pricey. 2 (smallish but not mini) donuts and a PINT of cider cost me about $6.50. I think next time I'll go back to Yates for my fix but this was on my way to the Novi area today (Troy to Novi). I'm definitely not coming back on a weekend, it was way too crowded for me. Tip if you go, though: there's a small area "downstairs" from the main area that only sells donuts/cider, and the line was much shorter than the lines for the main building; by the time I left, though, it had gotten long. Having read about Franklin Cider Mill, I was pretty excited to check it out. Came here on a lovely, snowy and cold Sunday afternoon. There was a ton of parking and zero line (yipee!). We walked around the cute little stalls with tons of red and green apples. They have a lot of speciality items: apple butters, breads, cinnamon almonds, cheese, pies, honey, the delicious list goes on and on...We picked a couple apples la carte style (honeycrisp ftw) and paid before going inside. Inside, it was nice and warm. We watched the process of extracting the juice from apples for a while then perused the freshly baked snacks. We decided on hot ciders and donuts. Although, don't get me wrong, I wanted all of it. The donuts are served nice and hot with a slightly crunchy exterior, and a fluffy and subtly sweet inside. I appreciate that they didn't have extra sugar or weren't dipped in icing. I love how plain they are. The first bite will have you hooked. I almost went back in for a dozen more. A dozen hundred. Next time (they also have gluten-free ones if you're interested)! The cider was piping hot and equally delicious. It's pretty amazing. We got some to go. It's cash only, so come prepared. It's finally that wonderful time of year! Cider mill time! So I was most definitely at Franklin on the first Saturday I had off and loaded up. And OMGoodness! I missed donuts and cider so much! And so did everyone else apparently haha! The parking lot was packed, but luckily there are always people coming and going, so it wasn't a terrible wait for a parking spot. It looks like Franklin added a few new attractions too like a booth for grilled corn, face painting and then there were the classic faves like sausages, cheeses and cider slushies! That corn was the truth though! It was grilled to perfection, covered just covered in butter, then I got to top it with different seasonings and parm! It's definitely something I'm still dreaming about. My guess for them having so much going on, was to keep people spread all over, as opposed to packed inside the donut and cider house, which surprisingly wasn't that bad! There was a line that was out of the door but man did they have that line moving. I recently went here on a Saturday morning. It was crowded, but they kept things moving swiftly. It might have been too early in the season, and I have no idea what they did pre-COVID, but it was a little underwhelming. That being said, the setting is beautiful. Though parking is tight, it isn't too difficult to find a spot. I got a cider slush and gluten free donuts which is always a rare treat. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. I have not been to the Franklin Cider Mill since my own kids were young, almost thirty years ago. This mill, which dates back to 1832, five years before Michigan became a state, is a local historical treasure in Oakland County and a top fall attraction in this area. As Sunday was a wonderful fall afternoon I got the wild idea to take my young grandkids to Franklin Cider Mill similar to what I had done with their father when he was young. The experience of the mill with donuts and cider did not disappoint as the kids had a great time. Aside from the donuts and cider, the kids got their faces painted, had some balloon animals made for them, ran around the mill having fun, climbed aboard a tractor on display, saw apple cider being made, sampled various cheeses/sausages/fudge and listened to a local musician playing songs on his keyboard. Overall a great afternoon and one that will give the kids great memories of a beautiful Michigan Fall afternoon in a cider mill. If you are an adult you may or may not like/appreciate what this cider mill has to offer but I guarantee you that kids will enjoy themselves while being outside and getting some exercise and parents/grandparents will get a great deal of pleasure in sharing in such a fun experience with the youngsters as this are the type of permanent memories kids will hold into their adulthood and which I as a grandparent want to be part of.... read more

Is this place a joke? I am shocked by all of the positive reviews. My experience was laughable from the start, little children near a rocky creek in cold weather, getting close enough to fall in. Run down, confusing, turd brown building with no access to a decent bathroom. Porta potty life here! Once you get inside you will be instantly insulted by the insane markups of every single item. Idk anyone, wealthy or not, who wouldn't find paying $8 for a hot dog or $12 for mustard to be absolutely ridiculous. Like I'm at some type of sporting event at Ford Field lol. The business does not care about its customers, it's main concern are high profits. And yes I understand it's seasonal, blah blah blah, as a Michigander I can name at least 3 cider mills with safe, fun activities for children, bathrooms and FAIR prices. This is a nice location once you get into it. The parking lot is challenging to say the least. It is difficult to get into and out of. Walking to the facility is not easy. Handicapped persons, the elderly and anyone with children should be on guard and ready for action! Entry is close up on what can be a very busy intersection. Having said that, on a busy day the facility is quite packed. Their pies are wonderful. The cider ranges from first rate to rather disappointing. I don't know if it's all the source apples or the process. They have a profusion of bees at this location and because of the constricted space it will be difficult to avoid them if you or someone in your party is allergic. The place is heavily wooded all around and the River Rouge runs along and throug the property. The river can alternately run calm and rough - children should be kept away from the river. Do not enter the water. The pies are fine and donuts are good. This attraction is just what it says it is - 'A Family Tradition'. You might not recall the actual reason you are doing but you did it last year so you might as well do it again. It's okay for a short day trip and to pick up the sweet (sometimes) cider and pies and donuts. I give it a solid 'Eh'. read more

This is the best cider mill in MI! I've been coming here since i was a kid and have to make a stop here at least once a year. Came through last weekend with my niece to enjoy some doughnuts and cider and of course she fell asleep before I could get her out of the car! I ordered online and Joe was SO helpful with explaining to me how to order online and get my goodies! Everyone here is so nice and helpful and the atmosphere is wonderful! I highly recommend this place! read more
