Great, underrated track way out in Virginia. Holes 5 and 18 are fantastic, reachable par 5s. Both…read morehave risk/reward second shots that ask different questions. I also love the hole 1 and 10 combo. Hole 2 is stunning too as it goes straight up the hillside with a stone wall and a severely sloped green. More room right off the tee than you would initially think. But this course is noticeably better from the blue tees than from the tips. Several blind tee shots from the back tees, the biggest being 17. It could easily become a fantastic drivable par 4 with water left and OB right. The other thing I would change is making those yardage features much smaller. They were trimmed recently and dozens of golf balls could be found by looking into them. I've lost a few in them over our rounds here. But I love the vibe here and welcome any opportunity to come back. And go see Robin Beach, their new pro. He's the man!

Extremely laid back environment and definitely not the same old stuffy environment that too many clubs have around here. The course is always in great shape, even during the winter months and pretty difficult. There's opportunities to score if you know the course but miss your shot and you can end up in a bad spot and struggling to save par. A full driving range, putting green and chipping green. The only issue is there are no lights on those facilities so trying to get out there and practice during the winter months can be tough and they're closed on Mondays. They've done a great job with upgrading the pro shop and always having new products in there. The restaurant and Tavern is beautiful and I'm sure will be a great place to hang out and have dinner and a beer after a round during the summer months. If you've considered joining I'd definitely recommend it, the pricing is great especially with the amenities and access you get.

What a great find this little artists' co-op is! When husband, Moms, MIL and I pulled up to Bogati…read moreBodega Winery, I heard a little gasp. "I know that place!" Moms exclaimed, pointing to this charming art gallery occupying half of the same building as the winery. Turns out Pops -- a woodturner -- knows Tom Boley, one of Gateway Gallery's resident woodturners, and Moms and Pops have been out to visit before (the woodturning world is small, my friends, hard as that is to believe). Naturally, we had to pay a visit...*after* a wine tasting, of course. GG is an artists' cooperative, where the artists -- in this case all local -- come together to create, staff, and manage the gallery. The pieces span a huge range of techniques: gorgeous fiber wraps and shawls, handcrafted silver jewelry, fused glass, ceramics and pottery, digital photography, pen-and-ink drawings, acrylic painting, weavings. The place is *packed* -- tastefully -- with beautiful bits and baubles. We browsed quite some time. Not only is there art for every taste, there's art for every budget. I fell in love with the acrylics and oils of Kaarin Nelson, whose paintings incorporate a "cheerful color palette" and "playful line." I really wanted the 20"x20" painting of a robin in a radish patch, which I thought was a steal at $175. Instead I decided to save a few pennies and went with a 6"x6" of a rosy pink, chubby pig for $30. I was already in love with it when the gentleman pulled it down off the wall for me and showed me the title of the work is "Some Pig." The "Charlotte's Web" nod pushed that painting right over the top for me. Gateway Gallery is the kind of shop I wish were closer to home. But the fact that it's nestled comfortably in Loudoun County's wine country makes it a convenient diversion after (before....or during....) vineyard jaunts.

This is the place to go in the DMV if you're looking for a new Yamaha piano…read more We were first-time piano buyers looking for a new U1. From what I read online, most piano dealers will quote an MSRP or "SMP (suggested maximum price)" with the expectation that you will haggle down the price. We went to our local Yamaha dealer [not Downtown Piano Works] and met with a sales associate recommended by our piano teacher. His first offer was already less than MSRP: I'm terrible at haggling, but I figured I'd try anyway and ask for a better price. A day later, he came back with another $500 off the price. I was feeling pretty good about myself and was getting ready to go to the store before his "offer expired." On a whim, minutes before I left, I thought I'd try the next closest Yamaha dealer, which happened to be Downtown Piano Works. I typed a chat message into their website, expecting a canned AI answer. Instead, Dan, the owner, responded right away. He told me to call him on his cell phone, and without hearing the other store's "lowest" price, he quoted a price that was $1500 less. There was no haggling, no wondering if I was getting a worse deal than everyone else on the internet. We drove with the kids an hour to Frederick just to make sure this wasn't too good to be true, and it wasn't. Dan and Theresa opened their store on a Saturday night, three hours after I'd first messaged their website. By the time we left, we were the owners of a new Yamaha U1. If you're in the market for a new Yamaha acoustic piano, within driving distance of Frederick, and want to avoid the usual stress of new piano shopping, I'd definitely try clicking chat on their website.
