breakfast menu for franklin trading post
    Arshan A.

I laughed, and ate my ass off here. I found out about the place by a local, it's the best local secret I've ever been to. Literally everyone calling each other nicknames, and I was the only one with a menu since everyone else just asked for their "Usual." My mind was blown. I had 2 muffins and 2 ginormous pancakes, and a water for like $6. It's run by like one or two people, so everyone helps clean, serve themselves water. True honor system and you absolutely have to drop by. They have funny signs all over and they're all a bunch of jokers.

The staff is quite friendly and customer focused and the menu is straightforward, but the real joy is in the cooking. It's REALLY good. If you read my other reviews you'll see that I'm not shy about highlighting poor food and bad service. This place was neither of those. It was a little surprised that a place with "roast beef" in its name would be out of roast beef on a Sunday afternoon until the explained that the are closed on Mondays and cook their own roasts (2 a day) and serve until sold out on Sundays so the sandwich meat is fresh when the reopen on Tuesday. Amazing. I had a Baja smash burger and my wife had an Olin smash burger both with caramelized onions. Both were excellent. Fresh - not frozen patties - and it showed. Fries were really good too. I'll be back later in the week to try their roast beef sandwich and see if it lives up to the "legend" name.

We were standing near the bar, and one of the bartenders invited us to sit and moved chairs around for us. Service was excellent and very friendly. The historic building has a tin roof and a wooden bar that eeks history. Our waitress was so welcoming and made us feel right at home. I enjoyed the roasted tomato burrata baguette sandwich and it was toasted and tasty. Several of my dining partners also had the same sandwich. Another had the Warm Roasted Root Vegetable Salad that she said was wonderful. We finished the meal with generous portions of carrot cake topped with delicious cream cheese frosting. There is a store inside the Black Moon (that happened to be closed on a Saturday night). In the corner they sell vinyl records and CDs and there is also a selection of guitars. There was also a musician playing live music near the front of the pub that really added to the atmosphere. It was a truly great find right on Main Street in Ellsworth.

Our party of 4 had the lobster mac n cheese (didn't get a pic of this because my son devoured it so quickly, YUM!), crab roll, clam chowder and 2 lobster dinners, plus a couple cold beers to wash it down. It was all amazing. Best lobster dinner I've had up here, and we've been coming to Maine for 14 years. The folks working here are all so attentive, kind, going above and beyond. Example - I don't care for the stuff in the body that you sometimes get with super fresh lobsters. Apparently this is a delicacy, but this Southern girl says no thanks. I asked if they would mind giving it a little dip to clean it out once broken. No rolled eyes, no hesitation, just absolutely YES. They cleaned it out, split it open and returned it to our table in a fresh boat. WOW! The lobsters were cooked to perfection. So tender, so juicy, so very fresh. The corn was crisp and amazing. Cole slaw is not usually my jam but their version was delicious! We cleaned our plates. The crab roll had tons of crab - super sweet and amazing. Clam chowder was the perfect balance of creamy broth, clams (so tender), and potatoes. We were already planning our next trip before we left the first time.

They have small parking space on the side of the brick building. Inside is a small space but has some seats, tables and counter to place your order. They do have outside seatings as well. The person running the front which i assume was the owner was very nice and attentive. We got the brick buoy, the bricklayer's catch, lobster bisque and the holy donut. The brick buoy was a toast with lobster salad on it. It was small portion but was tasty. The bricklayer's catch was like grilled cheese with some lobster meat. It was good but i feel like it could have been elevated if there were with mixed cheese like smoked Gouda and mozzarella or some more addition like onions, peppers and mushrooms and such. The lobster bisque was creamy, flavorful with hint of bitterness. You also get a toast to dip with which pairs well with soup. Would have liked some veggies or lobster meat in it but for the price it was still good. Service was excellent. The workers were very nice and attentive. I can tell that they really care about the place and even have a sign on the table to let them know about any complaints to make it right for the customers. Overall the place was good and it's nice to see local restaurant that cares about what they do and how they treat their customers. Only thing is that they still have some room to improve regarding to their food offerings. However i know that it's a newer place and who knows, their other menu may have been better. Either way I hope that they continue to provide excellent service and strive for polishing their menu.
