My first rooftop bar experience in London and by far my favourite! The view is just breathtaking! Situated on the 10TH floor of a multi-storey car park in Peckham - I love how completely random this place is. I remember struggling for about 10 minutes trying to figure out where Frank's Cafe was When I did eventually find it, I felt like I had just discovered a secret venue. My first visit was on a Sunday afternoon and there were only a handful of people, hence my above feeling. I remember the food and drinks being reasonable, with the food portions slightly on the small side, but literally nothing could ruin my day after discovering this place. My second visit was on a Friday night and there were significantly more people. We still had an amazing time and enjoyed the view immensely. Franks open it's roof again on the 19th of May 2016! Frank's Cafe is quite a special place. For those of you unfamiliar with Peckham, it is in desolate ends of South London. Despite the attempts to talk it up in the press Peckham isn't gentrified. It isn't even nearly gentrified. It remains an unadulterated shithole and is all the more entertaining for it. Frank's Cafe sits aloft from Peckham, on the 10th story of the multistory carpark, which nests over the multiplex. I remember going there as a kid and the smell of urine must considered a fixture now. On various days I have been there I have had to weave my way up to the roof in different ways. Once when I went the lifts by the front weren't working and we had to heave ourselves up to the top via the back stairs. As you do so, you think to yourself, I must be mad, nothing is up here. Then you emerge on the roof and realise that the good thing about being in Peckham is that you can see out of it. In fact you can see the whole of (proper) London, from Canary Wharf to the City of London to St Pauls. It is spectacular. Frank's Cafe is embedded in between various chunks of modern art from the Hannah Barry gallery (http://www.hannahbarry.com/) littered around the carpark. Most of the art entertains for a second but one of the pieces is a viewing platform with a diving board over a mirror which makes you feel as you could dive into clouds (and also gives you a better view). The construction of the Cafe itself is its greatest glory. It is quite simply a great piece of architecture. A hunking temporary structure which from the back floats and cantilevers itself over the carpark (see pics I will upload). The food is done (or meant to be done) by an Anchor and Hope chef. Well every time I have been there they only have a couple of things from what is already a limited menu. They generally seem to have one main and some roasted vegetables. If you have travelled a ways to get here (since, to be fair, who the hell lives in Peckham) it is a touch of a disappointment. And when consumed the food merely leaves a hint of average in your mouth with a glimmer of it could have been much better. Last time I went I had cold slices of lamb, cold roasted vegetables and cold hummus. Considered it was all preprepared I don't understand why the rest of the menu couldn't similarly be ready or why they couldn't endeavor to do something interesting; i.e. actually cook on the roof. It also seems especially ridiculous that they never have a full menu as there are always enough staff to put on a minor Shakespeare play and they always seem busy. If the food was true to the name of the bar (i.e. a grill) and they did good home made burgers or some other outdoor solid food it could be a fantastic place. The drinks (and campari) are somewhat better and are only elevated by what must be the best view in London. In the end you really really should go here. Maybe more than once. It has been set up by a young crew who are trying very hard. They deserve to be a success simply because of their choice of location and their choice of architect. Shame the food just isn't there but well, isn't that the least important thing in a restaurant these days (?). You know, I'm not sure how to feel about Frank's Cafe. It's effing weird. First of all, it's in a place you wouldn't expect. We came to Peckham with some friends because it's a tad dodgy but very up and coming. Think some places on the "east side" of Austin. So we finally find our way up and you can bet that if there are other young white people looking confused they're looking for it too. After several flights of stairs and very bright walls later we find it. It's essentially the top part of a parking garage made into a bar. Yes, the views are very cool. It gives you an amazing panorama of London and I can only imagine how wonderful it is during sunset. I've used some pretty shit bathrooms before, and these are up there. Use them once just for the experience, but there's definitely no reason why they would have to have those- I think it's stupid. And no it doesn't make me posh! It would hardly cost much more to use a slightly taller board as a door so people can't look in on you! read more

It really is a carpark. You have to walk up the level ramps and the cars become fewer and fewer and then become replaced with random pieces of sculpture. And then you reach the roof level (which is where we usually hate ending up when we try to park) and there's this giant red fabric covered bar, housey technoey music and a ton of people having a blast. They were only serving white and rose that night? Not sure if thats all the time. And the bathrooms had a line down the street* but we still had a great time dancing and just enjoying the great weather and strange venue. The only reason I was there was the fact that I was led by some pretty hep south londoners I occasionally spend time with in that area. It wouldn't be the first place I think of on a regular night out. BUT if Im ever entertaining in South London and my friend's say "Where to next?" This will definitely be a great place to make it "One of those nights" *Emergency Potty Tip!: Go to the McDonald's across the street, there's less of a line there. read more

This place is incredible. A nice bar, decent food and and incredible location. Located on top of a multi-storey car park in Peckham the views from this place are truly some of the best in London, plus there is tons of space meaning it has virtually unlimited capacity. There are one or two drawbacks which stopped me giving this place 5 stars though: The bar is just not big enough to cope with the crowds this place gets, you can easily queue for 45 minutes to get served on a Friday or Saturday evening (afternoons tend to be a better bet). The bar is also full of white hipsters (in one of the most un-white and un-hipster parts of London) and this gets on my nerves much of the time. Worth a visit for a couple of hours for the views but I couldn't spend a whole evening here due to the clientele myself. read more

What a unique rooftop bar and what an adventure to get to it! After finding the entrance to the car park there are multiple steps and ramps to negotiate, as well as security check, before you finally get to this bar on the top level of the structure. The view across South London and into the city and Canary Wharf is awesome and worth the hassle on its own.. It was busy on a rainy September evening, so I dread to think how packed it gets on a beautiful summer day. There is a large sheltered seated area so don't let a little rain deter you. Everyone should visit this bar at least once. I am so happy to have visited this bar and can imagine coming back to show out of town friends who visit next summer. Having said that I will not be back for my own benefit, as the only beer on tap was Estrella and I am, as you may know, something of a beer snob. read more

I've only ever experienced Frank's once and I think I got very lucky. Arriving at about 2pm on a Saturday afternoon with the sun blazing this was a good place to be. Plenty of seating space if you want to rest your weary legs after climbing all those stairs and even some with a bit of shade if that's what you are after. The food looked ok but was definitely overpriced and I paid £20 for a jug of Pimm's. Fairly standard price for London and one tastes the same as the next. I left around 5pm and it was starting to get busy then and I can imagine that it will be a bit of a nightmare when it's packed. Service is hit and miss and the bar area gets a bit cramped. I'll have to pay it another visit to experience the difference once the sun goes down read more

Not many things persuade me to go down to Peckham, but Frank's has become one of them. This brilliant bar located on top of a six story car park just opposite the train station is one of the best places to spend an sunny afternoon sipping on some very reasonably priced (£5-6) beverages and food (£8-12). As the name suggests, Campari is the main ingredient in half the cocktails but they do have some other quality drinks, my personal favourite being a Disaronno Sour. There is a selection of beers on tap (I think Meantime mainly) and your usual red and white wines. I learned a Bicylette (which we almost all ordered since we cycled down to Peckham and up to the bar) is half Campari, half white wine. Seems a bit odd and the very pink colour was a bit much for me but tastes alright. The negronis and Red Russians (more fruit juices rather than milk) are excellent choices although I'd recommend a Campari and orange for any Campari newbs first. The bar is open to the elements but does have a large retractable cover in case of rain. Be warned, it's quite windy so even on a warm day make sure to grab a light jacket, particularly if you are staying into the evening. The food area boasts a massive smoker with some pretty tasty pulled pork on offer as well as a bunch of other gourmet options. The main drawback is that the food line is separate from the bar, so you have to wait in one line to order your food and then another to get a drink. The bar staff aren't the fasted people either so expect the lines to build up to 10-15 min wait. Other thoughts: There are a few ping pong tables if you want to get your game on. The bathrooms are quite open plan with the guys urinals being little more than plastic boards stuck against a wall. Sorry girls, you may get an eyeful when walking past. For my fellow cyclists, you can ride up the parking ramps to the entrance and they have thoughtfully built in bike stands for you to lock up. Absolutely brilliant idea and one I wish more places would consider. As those of you who know me, I'm usually on my bike no matter what so this is a big plus in my book. Overall, an excellent bar and I'm just sad it took me so long to get down there. Now if only the wait for a drink wasn't so damn long, I'd pop down now before Yelp drinks! read more

This was one of my favourite summertime haunts. Turned up last Friday at 8, and wow. What a change. So many people, shortly after I arrived a queue of over 150 people had formed, one in, one out. My drink was badly made and expensive. Staff and security were friendly and helpful, but the new breed of punters, best avoided. Some really unpleasant characters. Glad I got to enjoy it the last few years, before the hoards ruined it. It's unlikely that I'll ever return. Thankfully lots of new places to try nearby. read more

Great view! This is a bar/cafe on the top of an abandoned car park. It's suitably grotty (but in a nice way) with a vast amount of ex car park space to occupy. There are selfie stick opportunities all over the place but leave them at home because this ain't the crowd. On that, probably not the best place to take the parents or any one that enjoys soft, fluffy clean things. The toilets are reminisce of those found in organised camp sites which is fine by me but doesn't suit everyone. The wine list is simple (one btl white, one btl red), the other drinks are relatively reasonable for a roof top bar. There is food available which looks pretty good and again ok priced. It's mainly simple share-y nibbles (almonds, olives, one whole artichoke) but you can get a couple of more substantial bits and pieces like a daily kebab. I would probably keep the eating to days that have minimal wind. Take your sunscreen because this is quite a wide open, uncovered space. And not the best place if it's raining. Amazing for a sunset gaze. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Frank's is everything you've heard. Great views of the city, summer time only, limited head count, unmarked, secret and hard to find. In Peckham ill-fitting-high-waisted-cut-off's-f'n Rye. Decent beers and a vegan food plates. It's a hipster's wet dream. Trying to find this place, we were standing on the sidewalk looking at the phone when the market stall owner saw these very out-of-place kids and told us "Frank's is on top of the building" pointing to the cinema. We headed that way. Still no signs. There was a guy with a button up shirt with boats printed all over it. I knew we should follow him. It's in a place called MULTI-STORY CAR PARK (which there are signs for). Walk all the way to the top. I'm at the top of a car park standing in line with other people and bouncers- to nothing. For 30 minutes. I could almost feel my tshirt becoming a non-ironic crop top in the too-hip atmosphere. Thankfully, once we were up there meeting our friends, it was all ok. PROTIP: If you have friends up there, have them get your drink when they're getting theirs. The queue is also quite long for drinks. Worth going as long as there are not any other events going on in the car park. Not sure how you look that up. But there is a person limit for the whole floor/building, so a pop-up orchestra or book-fair means fewer people allowed in the rooftop bar. read more

I had been meaning to try Frank's for some time and finally made it there on a sunny Saturday afternoon in September. Franks's can be incredibly difficult to find, the best direction advice that I can give are that it is on top of a multistory car park behind the cinema. The car park itself is usually empty and on the floor below the bar there were some art exhibits. Frank's on the the top floor and has no roof so isn't a place to come if it is tipping with rain but on a warm sunny day I could see it being packed out. The furniture consisted of old wooden boxes (very hip) and was comfortable enough for our 2 hour stay. The views over London are great, Westminster, the City and Canary Wharf are all in shot. I'm a fan and will definitely be back! read more

Great views, top drinks & food - a great urban space. We shared some pork belly, a lovely barbecued sea bream and bread with humous. The beers on tap were all very good and the atmosphere was friendly. Nice to go somewhere completely different with incredible views of London, from Battersea Power Station across to the Dome. One of my top favorite dinner/drink destinations in London! It reminds me of a speak easy, the way it's perched on top of an old parking garage, but there's plenty of locals when you arrive. The food was yummy, the view was amazing, the drinks were strong and the environment was on point! When I went to Frank's the weather was very sunny and un-London like so it was busier than normal, aka some of the lines were long, other than that it was great! I'll definitely return :) read more

Definitely worth seeing once for the stunning views over London, for what the architects have made of a pop-up bar in a carpark, and for more anthropological opportunities to observe a particular type of 20-something Dalston man-woman south of the river. Wonderful food, too - buttery minty courgette ribbons with mint and homemade ricotta, delicious creamy hummus and roasted corn on the cob. Went on a very rainy night - so much water the tarpaulin roof eventually sprung a leak and gave way, closing the bar. read more

This cool yuppie pop up bar is great if the weather is good, hence why its a summer pop up only! Yes its full of alternative hipsters with beards and yuppies, but its a cool chilled place to hang out with friends and watch the sun set. The view is amazing, looking out across the city, with views of the southbank wheel, gherkin and shard. The cocktails are a decent (London) price £7/8 (expensive for Peckham, but what do you expect for a pop up) . Generally a great venue, except for the climb up through the car park. (Again, to be expected for a roof top bar!) We arrived at 20:00 and by 20:45 the queue to get up was 30 deep through the car park. Definitely a popular place for SW Londoners, get there earlier and take the stress out of getting a seat, and more importantly, a drink (or six). read more

This is a gem in Peckham. Every year the multi-story car park near the Peckham plex is turned into Franks Bar, a great roof top bar with gallery and exhibitions. If you can head there during the day the instilations are worth checking out, although they may not be to everyone's taste, it is free so the only thing it will cost you to look around is time! On the roof-top itself there is an undercover bar and plenty of room to look across the sights of the South East, at the hight of summer this bar can get very busy, so make sure you are there early of an evening. When a conventional town building, built originally for such a functional purpose, is changed into a completely different use it seems to bring alot more life and excitement in visiting it, the locals love it and people come from all over to town to see it, miss it, miss out. read more

"If you carry on like that, you'll end up swigging spirits in a piss soaked carpark". It's the kind of thing my mother told me fairly regularly though my teenage years and for this summer and last, it appears that she's not far from the truth. I blame it on the students. Since I stopped being one, I've blamed most things on them; queues in bars (even ones without happy hours and garish drinks), noise and general happiness on the night bus, the resurgence in fashions that we thought were shit at the time and my inability to have more than a bottle of wine in a night without feeling like crap the next day. All of the above came into play at Frank's Cafe last weekend. Frank's is cool.. it's an art installation cum pop up bar on the top three floors of a Peckham multistory just round the corner from an art college. It was born cool. Like the arty kid who joined in the sixth form with the right band t-shirts who smoked French fags and snogged the girl you fancied. And I'm not cool. Categorically. And I couldn't have felt more out of depth in this bastion of hip, so what did I do? surround myself with people who are. We went for the Costume King's birthday, a too rare raggle-taggle night ending late with whooping descent of drunken stairwell into piss infused alley. For a group who find it hard to be on time for a piss up in a brewery, we'd done well to get there early enough, but already food was disappearing from the chalkboard screwed to the reverse of the portaloo faster than we could fill our table. The staff clucked artily and fixed us jugs of Campari based punch and frosty beers while we raucously dived around the benches. Those of us who hadn't eaten (other than a late afternoon Mooli, but you can't hold that against me) raced to get to the menu before another item was scrubbed away. The rough hewn benches run from the bar, free of the tarpaulin roof, to the edge of the carpark and some amazing views over London. From this height even Peckham looks pretty. Eyeing the rapidly diminishing chalkboard, we went for a selection of dishes to share. This caused The Masticator no end of pain. A born Yorkshireman, he finds it nigh on impossible to share his food and flees tapas on sight. It's a plain and simple menu, nothing flowery (or descriptive) in the descriptions ("cheese - £5") and this carried through into the cooking. A prosaic plate of 2 or 3 haphazardly chopped heritage tomatoes was nice enough, and saltily studded in a manner pleasing to us old 'uns but pricey at £6 a go. A feta and tomato bruschetta affair was similarly simple. A good portion of crackle glazed porchetta came with salty, tasty stewed green beans and sprinkled with toasted almonds. A hefty slice of pig, and worth the £10 price tag. Mackerel made a late substitution for Sardine, the latter scrubbed from the chalkboard just before we ordered, likewise simply and competently cooked served with a lovely mustardy coleslaw style salad and served with orange to cut through the rich oil of the fish. We finished with a large dish of (slightly under) stewed gooseberries served with a slightly stingy portion of cream. Perfectly adequate though, and spying the mystical cheese (which appeared as a single large lump of what looked like Port Salut served solo) I think we went for the best option. In any case, it's not about the food at Frank's. It's about being able to (legally and without fear of the Salvation Army) sit on a multistory rooftop in the summer, drinking cheapish beer and slightly camp cocktails, surrounded by groups of art students having far too much fun, dressing up in 90's retro neon and "partying like it's 1990, because that's when I was born". Who needs Hampstead Heath and the views from Parliament Hill? I've got a carpark in Peckham, until September at least... read more

Stunning views of London, hipster crowd, blah blah you get that already right? This place is fun, it is great to have it in Peckham, and its a bit of a novelty. But I think it is a victim of its own success. We had to queue for 30 mins in single file for a drink, then go in a separate queue for food, another 20 minutes. Once we got there, there was only half the food still available. So you could get bread, but no hummus. What use is plain bread with nothing to dip it in? So were stuck with extremely studenty tomatoes on toast, and the highly dubious OX hearts. It's like they are taking cheap unfashionable food and pretending it is trendy and expensive. I call 'emperors new clothes' on this one. Just because it is served by a hipster wench doesn't mean it is special. In conclusion - yes, I'll be back, but I think I'll sneak in my own drinks to avoid the queue and eat some jerk chicken afterwards down the road. read more

Agree with most of the reviews here but I have a couple of gripes. They've restricted the food area to the covered section, and we went for my birthday last night and by 8:30pm they were already out of the Pastrami and some other dishes we were after. We ordered the corn and it never came. Then the waiter finally remembered and lackadaisically told us they were sorry but forgot to write it down and now the kitchen was closed. Nevertheless, it's a cool place and great drinks. They've changed their menu a bit so it seems they're working on the food, so the service and availability just has to rise to the level of the bar service for it to be even greater. read more

This place is really, really hard to find. My friend and I were total strangers to the area, and we must have walked around for at least 20 minutes before we encountered a kind stranger that happened to be going the same way. Even once you are at the Multiplex referenced in the Direction part of their website, there is no yellow lift and you have to walk around the side of the car park until you see an open door, which naturally you just have to take. Also, Abbey National definitely doesn't exist anymore, and it is a Santander branch now. We then followed this kind stranger up the steps, and she explained that once you get to the 6th floor, you just go straight and turn right, but in reality, I would have been confused again, because you walk through a deserted car park without any idea of where to turn, as it is not signposted in the least. Then once you go past the bouncer, you walk through some art installations, and after some winding ramps, you end up at the actual rooftop bar area. Even on an overcast day, the bar was pretty busy. We were told that on a sunny day, it is rammed and takes forever to get a drink at the bar. Luckily, we did not encounter such issues and ordered a jug of Pimm's (20 pounds, not bad), and got 2 seats on the ledge overlooking the City and central London. We could see the bar atop the Bussey Building behind us, but given that we were closer to the City, I think Frank's Cafe is the more preferable between them. The view was unobstructed, and it was a great day to look out onto our favorite new skyscrapers and chat for a few hours. They also serve food, with table service, and I saw an artichoke and burnt onion stuffed with goat curd come out, but we didn't get anything. The only downer about the whole experience is that the bathrooms are absolutely rank, because they are basically port-a-potties. They have running water to wash your hands, it's just a shame they couldn't get it for the toilets... Otherwise, it is a very good scene and I definitely plan to come back on a sunnier occasion. read more

A really really great view of London if you don't mind the random location and trek high up many stories of an old car park. it's worth it though. Especially on a warm summers day. I suppose it's where the south London hipsters hang out in a now trendier Peckham. But yeah it's really good for the view of the city which you have clear view of. It looks further than you think as the skyscrapers dominate the distance. read more

A unique experience indeed. Walking cluelessly up a, shall we say, fragrant car park stairwell is not top of my list of evenings out, but Frank's is well worth it. Loads of room with skyline views from the Dome to Westminister, well priced (£4.50-£5), strong, tasty cocktails, and friendly crowd and barstaff. They have a kind of interesting art exhibition to wander around but the icing on the cake has to be Delboy's Robin reliant! Just sitting there on the roof! Try and go for sunset to get the best of day and night views, plus it won't be too cold then. They also have food (didn't try) and Meantime beer. I think it closes at the end of September. read more

If you don't know Peckham then this place can be hard to find. I've had to go searching for friends many times that have managed to find themselves down a street ten minutes off or just in the wrong rooftop bar (CLF Cafe has one too now). Head to the cinema and turn right to go round the outside of the building. On your left you'll come to a fire door with some ugly concrete stairs, then up, up, up you go. Beautiful views and amazing summer vibes here. The food is gorgeous, with a very sexy cheese board on the menu. Cocktails are not extortionate and really well done. Be prepared to search for the very last bit of concrete left to sit on as it gets rammed in the evenings. Head there before 1 on weekends if you want a seat in the sunshine (for the love of God, wear sun lotion!) Also have art installations on the lower floors of the car park which is a fun little add-on to this place, and occasionally have random djs there. read more

This is the kind of place you come to because you've heard how cool it is. So, understandably, it was full of very cool people. But that meant that it was extremely loud and warm. It's probably much nicer on a sunny day, when people can spread our over the whole roof. I was unlucky enough to go on a miserable rainy day, which meant everyone was crammed into every inch of covered space. It was so loud that we actually sat out in the rain for a bit, rather than join the masses. Still, excellent views. Hard to find - you really need to know where you're going in advance because it's not signposted from the bottom of the carpark. Although as you get closer to the top there are lots of helpful stewards. Use the loos early, and then AVOID them for the rest of the evening - unpleasant. read more
