This is one of the best restaurants we have visited in London for fresh fish. It's so good we go back every time we visit! The restaurant is in a cute little spot with a few other restaurants. Great vibe with indoor and some outdoor seating The fresh fish and wine pairings are outstanding. We started with sea scallops which melted in your mouth. So good! Then we got a bottle of white wine with fish pairings (they had 8 local options the night we visited). I had the sea bass, and my husband had the trout. So good that I picked that sea bass apart all the way to the bone, which is saying a lot given that it was a very meaty, generous portion already. I tasted the trout, and it was equally amazing. Very impressive and fresh! I wish we could've actually tried some dessert because others around us looked very happy, but we were so full it didn't make sense. Everyone is so lovely and charming here, including their guests. I am a big fan of their chef, what a wonderful host she is! She made accommodations for my love since he couldn't have anything on the menu being gluten free. She created a dish for him specifically. She made the most incredible butter fish and he loved it. I was craving the Maldon Rock oysters and loved the vibe here. The presentation of all their dishes is beautiful art. Did you see the oyster picture???? I had the St Austell mussels and the cream sauce is spectacular like melted goodness dripping in each taste. Who would think almonds could be paired with mussels???!!! Ooeemmggee. I grew tired waiting for apps, then drinks, then mains. Foccacia arrived dry and tasteless. Menu was short, oysters not cold, and featured fish fishy. This is a wonderful neighborhood pub/restaurant! It's super cozy. The decoration of the dining room is authentic with history. We were lucky to find an open table for 2 on a Saturday evening. The appetizer octopus was fabulous! It's the Spanish style tapas. The octopus was soft and not too chewy. The potatoes with paprika powder were just simply delicious. The main dishes were amazing too. My favorite of the night was their rump steak. The steak was perfectly cooked in the medium rare condition and precisely cut into smaller pieces already. The peppercorn sauce was perfect with the steak. The potato terrine was very interesting! It's basically a super fancy way of serving potato chips. I love the texture that some of potatoes are soft, but some are crispy. The cauliflower puree was very good too. Overall, it is an excellently executed entree. The Newlyn Cod was good. It has very strong smoke flavor and pretty salty. The potato puree with leek was very good with cod. Overall, the food was very delicious. Excellent quality. However, the wait was very long. Although we didn't need to wait for a table, it took about 30 mins for the appetizer to come then another 30 mins or so for the main entrees. I admit it, shamefully: I didn't know "Sunday Roast" was a thing in the UK. So as always, as soon as i heard about it I had to try it. A friend recommended The Garrison so I followed her advice. First off, i have never had Yorkshire pudding so felt extremely uninformed when it showed up as bread-ish (I was expecting like actual putting). The roast was cooked well and the vegetables were as well. The gravy/au-jus spread over the top of everything was really tasty as well. For the price i thought it was a great lunch and now will certainly be on the hunt for more "Sunday Roast" spots. read more

We shared some specials Monk Fish and smoky clams in broth. The highlight is the Mackerel Tartare with a chip made from squid ink. Best seafood starter I had in a while. Not only is the food excellent the customer service is as well. There is a specialty cocktail menu and an ample wine list. And if your trying to decide on a starter, go with the frog legs you won't be disappointed. I liked the fact that the menu changes frequently also. I rarely post on Yelp, but need to take the time to express my deepest disappointment. For the past three weeks, I have been working with Jenny to orgainze a once-in-a-decade get-together with family and friends while visiting London from LA. Through Jenny, we booked a private room at the Garrison for 15 persons. In order to secure the room, she asked that I obtain pre-orders from each of the guests (which took me a lot of time)! When we arrived at the restaurant, the private room was not available as discussed. The manager of the restaurant--who was very helpful--informed us that Jenny had not communicated with his team at the Garrison about the booking of the private room or our pre-orders. He further explained that the communication breakdown was caused by the fact that Jenny is not an employee of the Garrison, rather she works for an independent reservation company. Initially, he offered to seat us in the main dining room at a very uncomfortable high top and an adjacent booth. This was less than ideal given that our party wouldn't be able to dine at the same table and the high top chairs were not suitable for children or the older adults in our party. Ultimately, we elected to move to a large room in the basement, which was occupied by several other parties at the time. This too was a less than ideal scenario. The music in the basement was very loud (much louder than upstairs), which presented significant challenges--the older people in our group could not hear any conversation, and the children became upset. As a result, over two-thirds of the party left at that point in time left. To put it simply, the lack of communication between the independent reservation company and the Garrison ruined our evening. This is time that myself, family, and friends will never get back. If you are looking to host a private event at the Garrison, I would suggest that you look elsewhere. On a positive note, the food and drink were very good. The manager and wait staff were attentive and helpful but ultimately unable to present a viable solution. read more

It's like dining at your grandma's house! Black-and-white army photos hang on the walls, faded out-of-style lampshades float over your head, and mouthwatering aromas waft about the space. Except this isn't food like -my- grandma ever cooked. Perfectly roasted potatoes mixed with tender carrots and al dente broccoli are smothered in slabs of meat just ripe for dipping in gravy. The entire mound is topped off with a bowl of Yorkshire pudding. On the side, we're brought a tub of potent horseradish... we didn't even have to ask for it. Delightful! Now, if only I'd been able to walk out of here without a half-dozen bits of gristle stuck between my teeth... flossing never felt so relieving! read more

We came here for Sunday Roast. Being North American, I knew this was a British tradition I just had to participate in! The environment was absolutely wonderful. Extremely cosy and warm. Brings back memories of Sunday dinners at grandmas house. The food was pretty average. Nothing was horrible, but also wasn't very good. All in all pretty bland. I will say the bread was amazing though. Overall, great place to spend an afternoon or dinner with some friends in a great environment. Food is not great, so don't come for that. read more

I booked a table for sunday roast/brunch based on Christoph N.'s detailed review on the Garrison. The place is a cozy/hipster gastropub that serves quite a few interesting dishes as well as a well a good Sunday roast menu. We ordered the chicken and vegetarian dishes out of the Sunday roast menu and split the chocolate brownie for dessert. All the dishes were really tasty and filling so that was great. The only downside was the service, our server just kept taking our plates once she assumed we were done, without really asking if we are done or not. Because of that, I had to sadly say goodbye to a few last bites on my main dish and brownie (which I actually should be thankful for). Reservation is a must. read more

It's so nice here, and the food is generally excellent, but it is painfully expensive. Some dishes are really outstanding while others are good but not brilliant, so it's a bit of pot luck (although, for example, you will probably be ok with something like delicious figs stuffed with delicious cheese). The decor and atmosphere, as others have said, is really cosy yet buzzing. The downstairs area is particularly cute and calmer, if it happens to be open when you're there. The staff are very friendly but can be quite inattentive - you have to flag them down, remind them about orders etc. Having said that, both times I've been I was let in without a reservation so they were probably quite stretched. I would be prepared to come here a lot if I could afford it. I can't, sadly, but there is certainly no shortage of others enjoying this place. read more

Why don't I venture out here more? The Garrison & Bermondsey Street, up to recently was a mystery to me and I only really came out here to intrude on my friend's brunch with her boyfriend (which I had not met before), even though I protested as I didn't want to feel like a third wheel. Oh how glad I did.... From the moment I stepped in - I knew this was my kind of place. I am a sucker for amazing quirky decorated places and 'The Garrison' didn't disappoint with it's mix match plates, cosy tea sets and eccentric trinkets. The people was lovely but service was a little slow though I wasn't too worried about that as it was Sunday Brunch so the place was packed. If you haven't made a booking you might have to wait a bit. We ordered some tea and OJ for drinks then me and my friend ordered Eggs Benedict and her boyfriend got a full English breakfast. It arrived with no delay and looked amazing drenched in just the right amount of yellowy Hollandaise sauce. It was so good and fulling that I don't think I was hungry till well in the afternoon. I can't wait to head back to try out the lunch and dinner menu if breakfast was so good. BTW, we dined on the table next to Professor Green, apparently it's a favourite haunt of his as well. Great decor and atmosphere, very friendly staff, a bit pricey given the relatively small portions I was on the search for a new brunch place today with a couple of friends. Walking down Bermondsey, we noticed the Garrison and the smells emanating from the kitchen were enough to draw us in immediately. We ran into a slight hurdle as we hadn't made a reservation and the place was packed (this is about 1pm on a Sunday). Luckily, the opened up the cinema room downstairs and seated us right away. The girls grabbed the really comfy looking couch type seats and I settled into the hard wooden chairs (damn the price of chivalry!). Our waitress was cute and friendly and was eager to provide suggestions when asked despite having just started the day before. We opted for a mix of dishes to share: 1) smoked pigeon with black pudding on a bed of rocket, 2) shredded pork and salmon (the mix had the consistency of light tuna salad) with melba toast and a mustarda (not really sure what this was made of), and 3) a pork sunday roast with all the trimmings. The smoked pigeon was tasty with a rich salty flavour and the meat was tender as duck should be. Sadly, the portion was barely more than a breast, so it was perhaps an appetiser but not proper meal. The shredded pork and salmon likewise was full of flavour but lacking in size. The pork roast was seared and juicy but more than half of the serving was fat which was a bit disappointing. The potatoes deserve special mention as they were delicious with crispy chewy skin containing light fluffy flesh. The potatoes were also tossed with herbs giving a little extra flavour. The pear and blackberry crumble and salty caramel ice cream was a satisfying end to the meal. The cumble was a little too chewy but the pear and blackberry filling was sweet and tart in all the right places. The ice cream (recommended by our waitress) was the perfect complement with the saltiness enhancing the sweetness of the crumble. Overall, loved the taste of the food and just wished the portions were a bit bigger. It's a good place to have a chat and catch up with friends over a quick bite, but won't satisfy that hungover brunch craving. read more

The Garrison should be near the top of your list for Sunday roast in London. It's a very casual yet atmospheric bistro pub that is well worth the jaunt down to Bermonsdey. The other Yelpers are spot on that The Garrison excels at being rustic shabby chic without being either too shabby nor too pretentious. All in it's a great place for a meal. To start I ordered the gazpacho which was a refreshing treat on a surprisingly sunny London day. They were a a bit stingy with the avocado pieces but otherwise it was a good start to the meal. Being a Sunday, I of course went with the roast beef...served medium rare with a selection of veggies, potatoes and pan drip gravy, and of course a Yorkshire pudding. Be sure to ask for a side of horseradish. There is also a nice selection of ciders and some hard to find beers. All in 4 stars. I ate here alone and felt I was an inconvenience to them. Surly staff and unresponsive and uncommunicative. I ate a broccoli and Stilton soup that was ok and then a truly awful kedgeree that was bone dry and over cooked. They left it sitting in front of me for 30 minutes barely eaten before removing. My white wine wasn't chilled correctly. Not sure why. The best thing about my night was the book I brought to read. So disappointed I generally love London gastropubs. read more

Very cosy and friendly atmosphere. I really liked the simpleness, rustic wooden tables and nothing to fancy on the tables. The menu followed the theme of keeping it simple, only 7-8 main options and all sounding great. I went with the pan fried trout. It was perfectly executed with beautiful crispy skin. On the drinks menu they didn't have tomato juice, but they made it happen which was great. At the end of the meal I tested out their new payment option (PandaPay) where you can pay for your meal from your mobile. I just had to ask the waiter for the table number, download the PandaPay App and then all was very simple and quick from there. Now I'm still new to London and learning and exploring the city, but I was greatly impressed with this gastropub. I was really hoping to get a late breakfast, but sadly that ends at 11:30am. I opted in for the tuna steak, a bloody mary, and a cappucino for take away. Everything hit the spot even the bread with butter! Everything was just super tasty that I took the bread and soaked up the sauces from the tuna steak dish. If there was any complaint it would be that it was definitely a pretty expensive lunch. A waitress told some of us to go downstairs where there was additional seating. Everything is so well thought out from the small bar where internet types square up with their macs aglow, to the small chalkboard menu boasting daily specials. Truly, I could not have been happier or more comfortable with the airy ambiance -- it's the type of place that you'll want to bring every visitor that comes to London. It's a reason to be thankful you live here. And then there was the food... oh the fooooood. Each dish was absolutely incredible, from the risotto to the gnocchi to the cod special. My dining buddies also let out the occasional groan of satisfaction as they devoured their gnoochi and cod main meals. The Garrison is not cheap, rolling in at around £14 on average for a main course. Yet as you walk in, you can't help but admire the opulent, decadence of the place. Backed up by a stunning gastro pub British food menu and a private cinema room, this place is a winner. The staff know they do good food and have a sexy establishment. I couldn't help but feel the service from our waitress was a little snooty, but with food this good topped of with the lovely house Chardonnay I destroyed, I will end this review in the positive way it deserves. Located on the quirky and trendy Bermondsey Street, The Garrison is a fantastic gastro pub which has a buzzing yet chilled and relaxed atmosphere. The layout is great as it has an almost vintage antiquey type feel with lots of random objects scattered around. The Garrison has a varied range of alcohol including beer, ciders, wines and spirits and the selection of dishes on the menu are delicious (although there isn't a huge amount of choice). I had the swordfish which was one of the best meals I have ever had. The food is the pub's main selling point so it is best to call and book in advance. There is always a trendy, arty type crowd in here and I love the vibrant atmosphere. Definitely a winner! read more

The pub itself is so inviting, friendly and fun that it makes me want to up sticks and relocate to within 10 steps of this place, so that I can call it my local. It has an airy feel, a lot of thought has been put into the decor. And the food! The food is easily a couple of steps up from standard pub fair and is grown up and inventive. The cornish crab and seared tuna are particularily good, although one of my favourite meals here was a simple fish finger sandwhich from the bar menu. What sets this place out from standard pubs is the private room and cinema in the basement which can be hired out for private parties. The cinema especially is a great idea if you have a birthday party and want a more inspired evening then just sitting around drinking (not that that isn't fun either). They can also provide food for you when you are down there, so you can really make an evening of it. read more

Had a very great time here last weekend with a bunch of friends. We actually had an amazing walk in the neighbourhood and the Garrison was exactly what we needed when it comes to food, drinks & service. The atmosphere is very warm, kind of the coziness of a swiss chalet, with super good taste and attention to details. We booked at 2pm and the lady was kind enough to make sure our table was ready and free on time. Happy to say this was actually my first fish & chips since I'm here...and it was something special. I remember those fries like it was yesterday...fabulous, and yes, I'm belgian ;) Great job guys. On our last day in London, we came here for breakfast on a Monday morning. It was crowded with a business crew but we were still seated (which was next to a bathroom area that produced a pungent odor). When we sat, we were given menus and ordered coffee- at that point everything was off to a great start. When we placed our order, there were a few things we ordered that were no longer available (it was 8:35 AM), settling for second options, between the table we ordered two Egg & Bacon sandwiches, English breakfast and Eggs Benedict. Seeing majority of the restaurant had been served, we assumed it would be relatively normal service. Then we didn't see our waiter or food for a solid 35-40 minutes but we kept seeing staff go downstairs, grab one ingredient and then head to the kitchen (we realized these were our breakfast ingredients). During this time, we felt as though our waiter was purposefully avoiding eye contact- we had to ask for water twice and then once the food arrived it was good but nothing special and we waited for someone to come back around to ask for the check. All in all, I was pretty bummed out by this place. It had such good reviews that we thought it was going to be a great sendoff breakfast. read more
