First time eating in Sault Ste Marie and decided for a late lunch at 1pm. Food: all came out at separate times. Kids can put first and then mine and last my husbands. The kids got grilled cheese and chicken with oranges and totes. The grilled cheese didn't have much cheese. The tater totes were actually pretty good I got BLT and as I was eating it it made my stomach turn slightly, could not finish it. Husband got the Italian sub last and we were actually all finished eating . The sandwich bun looked like it had been smashed by a tire wheel. He took two bites and didn't want any more. Service: 2 stars for our waiter. He did apologized for the delay in food and did try his best. He was super forgetful making me think he was having a rough day. Ambiance: Small dinner feel but I wish it could have been cleaner. The bathroom was the worst. Wish I would have done my research and picked a better spot for lunch. Will not be returning. read more

We came here to check out a local business, especially given their more affordable pricing. The place was older, a bit run down inside, and had real vibes that this was a spot for older folks and the church crowd. Our server was a younger guy who was very nice and was the saving grace of this experience. He told us to sit anywhere, and after a few moments I went to get our menus. He came over and told us about the buffet, which my man opted to try with a cup of coffee. I passed after seeing that the fruit in the fresh fruit bowl was bad quality, and ordered the biscuits and gravy with a chocolate milk and an order of bacon. When I got the chocolate milk, it was COVERED in whip cream and sprinkles for some reason. I removed it as I cannot have whipped cream, and he apologized and offered to bring me a new one and joked lightheartedly that his woman always tells him he overdoes it with the whip. It was very sweet for him to correct and resolved my issue. We proceeded to not see him for awhile after this interaction. My man got his food first and tried everything, expressing it was "one step above a continental breakfast at a hotel". When my food came out, I agreed with him entirely as the bacon was okay but the B&G was borderline inedible as the worst gravy I've ever tasted. Everything I got was hot, but it's clear that every single item we had was premade elsewhere and likely came in frozen- nothing done in house. I asked the hostess when she cleared our table if I could have the B&G removed, and she checked with the manager who gave me a hard time about it even though the hostess confirmed I barely took two bites (as shown in the photo). Our server then came over to our table once I sat down and ensured me he would remove it and even took off the bacon for me too, although I would have happily paid for what I ate. He got over 20% on his tip for his eagerness to help make things right and his friendly demeanor, and I couldn't have been happier with his service. I just wish the food was better to any degree, it was some of the worst and driest food we've had in a long time unfortunately. I don't know if Frank's Place has gotten better or I am just ordering the right stuff now, but it was (is) outstanding. I got their loaded. I got the loaded skillet with eggs over easy on top and lived it. It was hot, cooked right, really tasty, and there was enough to keep me going for a while. Orange juice and coffee were very good as well. Service was outstanding- fast, efficient, and friendly. This is my go-to for breakfast in the Soo. I parked on the street without any trouble so I don't know if they have any off-street parking. read more

Today was very disappointing, went here because of the poutine. Growing up here they have always had the best poutine NOT today the fries were not cooked through and were soggy to the point I would not eat and sent back. This was quite a great place and they had great service, great coffee, and great food. So when I got in here they sat us right away and they had a buffet so I chose the buffet. The food was plenty and delicious, they also make their own homemade bread which I had sourdough bread and was very delicious and tasteful. The waitress was very helpful and kept the coffee coming. I was very happy with the late lunch I had here. The waitress told me about the buffet so I walked over and looked at it. It looked pretty good and was only $8.99 so I decided to give it a try. I didn't end up having any salad because I already had a plate full of food before I saw it but I got a bowl of chicken barley soup, a piece of broasted chicken, some green beans, some beef and noodles, some stuffed green pepper, mashed potatoes, and later I had a couple of desserts, a peach cobbler and baked bar that was either spice cake or maybe pumpkin cake flavor, I couldn't tell. The broasted chicken was wonderful, so was the soup and stuffed green pepper. The green beans were kind of tough and hard to stab with my fork but had a good flavor. The noodles were good but a little dry and the beef that was in them was so tough I didn't finish it. I didn't try the stuffing so I don't know if it was good. She did say it was made from scratch. I was pretty full from the first plate but I went back and got a little bit of a macaroni salad that was excellent, wonderful flavor, and some of the cream of asparagus soup which had a rather slimy texture but good flavor. The peach cobbler or whatever it was, was way too dry and hardly had any fruit with it but maybe that's because it was almost all gone and I was scraping it from the edges. I thought the edges would have a nice, sweet caramelized sugar flavor but that didn't pan out. The bar was very good but that kind of bar isn't a favorite of mine. It was very moist and had just the right amount of whipped cream on top though so I ate it. I would definitely not hesitate to go back and have the buffet again. read more

Would be forgettable except for: Mushroom soup, the chili, and the 1919 rootbeer on draft. If I did this again, I would order the pastie and get the soup and salad bar, but I'd douse the pastie in the mushroom soup instead of the gravy or ketchup (both apparently what you are "supposed to do" based on recommendations of other Michiganders). But that mushroom soup would have given some unbelievable flavor to the pastie! Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the pastie flavor profile to appreciate it. Or maybe I was just completely stuffed from the open soup and salad bar to really enjoy the pastie. Also, I don't think my pastie had rutabaga in it, I'm pretty sure it was just potatoes. I've been meaning to stop in at Franks ever since we moved here a year ago. So today was the day. The tables, counter and back bar were clean. The wait staff were pleasant and attentive. I ordered the western omelette with rye toast. The homemade rye bread was dense and good but had little rye taste. The omelette was cooked perfectly, the onions and green peppers were cooked but still firm and they used cheddar cheese as opposed to american. I would have given Franks 4 or 5 stars but there were a couple of drawbacks. The carpet was dirty and worn giving the place a dirty appearance. This is why I mentioned the cleanliness of the surfaces. Also, breakfast usually comes with hash browns/potatoes. The omelettes at Franks do not. So, the price was a little high for an omelette and coffee. But I will definitely go back, perhaps for lunch or dinner. read more

We stopped for lunch. The hostess was not at her station so a waitress seated our party. She offered a booth or a table. We took the table. The waitress tossed the packets of eating utensils and the menus on the table with a loud slam and walked away. A young man was our server. He seemed ok but very quiet. After ordering I excused myself to the restroom to wash my hands. Along my way I noticed very dirty carpet, ceiling tiles coming down and light fixtures not matching. Returning to our table I noticed the carpeting was so dirty it looked black in areas and the entire dining room was dirty. We received our meal and were not impressed. The sign out front of the restaurant boasted the best food in the Soo and all homemade. My husbands sandwich was made from frozen prepackaged meatballs. The ground beef in my taco salad was crunchy with gristle. While we were eating the hostess was vacuuming near our table. That is not acceptable. Definitely not a great visit to Frank's Place! Later that night I had terrible heartburn and nausea. We do not recommend Frank's Place and will not return. read more

My family and I stopped here on our way home from a camping trip in Canada and we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. We came here off a recommendation from another local restaurant who's name is escaping me at the moment (we wanted breakfast in the middle of the day and they had stopped serving already). Frank's Place has some of the nicest staff we have ever encountered and some of the best food we have ever eaten.
