We stopped by this place to order and sample a Pastie -- a notable local foodstuff of legend in the area. It was -- interesting. Penny's is our favorite restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie. Go easy on your breakfast order because the portions are very generous. The waffles were great and the eggs cooked perfectly. All of the sandwiches we tried. We're delicious with fresh bread and excellent cold cuts. Don't even start on the desserts or you'll be hooked for life. Penny's Kitchen (St. Ignace.) Lunch. Via was Counter Service, and Waitress - Friendly, Welcoming, Happy, Efficient, great at her job. Then, there was Melissa, who makes terrific food and listens to customers' requests, when passed on from Via. She made one of the best Corned Beef Reubens I've had. My sister Jane had the Ham Club, also good. We both took out half of our sandwiches for dinner plus a carryout of Tuna & Shells for tomorrow.   Personally, I could have picked at least 4 other things I would have enjoyed.  Thank goodness, the first restaurant we planned on turned out to be closed for the season, and  we would have missed trying Penny's.  So worth going to. read more

I am a part of a group that came up to fish the area. We have been doing it for 50 years. Once during the week we come to town to play golf. We stop and have breakfast on the way we found Penny's on line and decided to try it. We were very pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by a very pleasant young lady who helped us understand their process. She took our orders and then delivered the food. The food was amazing and large portions. If you leave there hungry it's your own fault. The place was clean and bright. Thank you Michelle for getting us off to a wonderful day of golf. read more

I first ate here when my mom was in the hospital. It's across the street and the variety is amazing. The staff is friendly and there is plenty of seating. They bake their own bread and desserts. This is a nice homey place where you walk in take a menu from a menu stand, sit at a table of your choice. Once you look through the massive menu pick what you want, walk to counter and order. Sit back down at your table and they bring out hot delicious home cooked food. My Husband had the pastie with gravy and I had chicken pot pie. It was excellent! Ladies at counter were very helpful and friendly. We ended up buying food for dinner too. Desserts were awesome! We are in area for vacation and will probably be back again this week for more. Penny's is rather unassuming from the outside, but the inside is spacious and sunny... And the menu is huge! We had a very late brunch/lunch here. I ordered two eggs, potatoes and bacon with toast. The bacon was really flavorful. I gobbled it right up! The eggs and potatoes were great too. Even the toast was tasty (I'm thinking it may be homemade). There's a coffee bar with lots of local choices like Mackinac Island Fudge flavored coffee. Make sure to grab a to go cup! Note: They serve all day breakfast! read more

Penny's Kitchen is such a pleasant surprise! It's a couple of blocks off the main drag in town and away from the tourist traffic, so the vibe is easy going and very friendly. It's very clean, including the rest rooms, and bright, nicely decorated. No booths, but comfortable wooden chairs and tables throughout. Grab a menu when you enter and then order and pay at the counter when you're ready. The menu and any specials are also posted on a chalkboard behind the counter. When ready, your food is brought to your table. No beepers or buzzers. The servers just know where you're sitting. The food and bakery items? Delicious! And portion sizes are generous at very reasonable prices. We were there for breakfast, but we will plan on a lunch before we leave town. It's now our restaurant of choice in town. read more

This place was AWESOME! So much room to sit, and not be bothered. I ordered the half sandwich/soup combo, and I got the spicy gumbo soup with the pesto sandwich and it was killer! The soup was nice and spicy but full of pepper. My husband got half of the turkey melt and a cup of chicken dumpling soup, both were absolutely delicious. We also ordered a couple of homemade bakery items: raspberry cheesecake and the carmelita! Best cheesecake I've had in a while. This is the kind of place where you order one time and know everything on their menu will be amazing. So do yourself a favor and GO HERE! read more

***spoiler alert - dad joke ahead*** As Northern Michigan begins to thaw from the long winter everyone is a bit testy. During our visit to Sault Saint Marie smiles were few and rude treatment was the norm. After each encounter I would tell my wife "I think they meant the town's name to be Sue Saint Marie to get a refund!" Bah rum bump...cricket cricket cricket. Penny's kitchen became my little ray of sunshine and the food was always amazing. Soup filled bread bowls were awesome, salads perfect, and just trust that the special of the day would be just that. I really want to love this this place. The atmosphere is cozy and the front the counter service is always a pleasure. However my food order is never right and the cook has such a foul attitude and I am guessing just unable to read a food ticket or just doesn't care about anyone's potential food allergies. I have been here four times over the past few months and every single time it is wrong. From ordering a BLT with avocado and receiving a turkey Swiss. Today I asked for a omelette with ham and veggies And received a veggie frittata. I heard the cook in utter disgust' "Jesus Christ" because I ordered a make your own omelette. Then proceeded to put parchment paper over the service area as I was standing there drinking coffee waiting for my Togo order. I guess that makes it okay for the cook to make whatever she wants and not what the customer pays for. Maybe it's a different experience if you're a UP local. Nice Sunday afternoon breakfast at a cute diner. We luckily arrived a little after 1:00 before they closed at 2:00. Some in our party were sad that only breakfast items were available on Sunday (no pastrami sandwich type foods). We were able to get treats like strudel and carrot cake to go. read more

Still a five star establishment, great coffee choices (I prefer Penny's blend), great breakfast (made to order) options, love their baked goods, and the service is worth the price of admission (free). You can come in and order - take out or eat in - engage or stay alone with your thoughts. At Penny's I encourage engagement, with the service staff and otter diners who are similarly minded. I am a breakfast guy, and everything I have tried has been wonderful. Take a chance! Parking is available on the street or in a metered lot on the side of the building. Food was acceptable, but prices were not. Menu was limited. Will not go back as other less expensive restaurants with a much broader selection of food are available in the area. Honestly I purchased a better sandwich at a much better price at a little grocery store way out in the country the day before. So go somewhere else if you have the time to walk further from the Hospital or you have a car and can drive to a cheaper restaurant. I stopped by Penny's for a quick breakfast. They are a very casual neighborhood restaurant and coffee shop. They have a large selection of flavored coffees. I tried the hazelnut. It was terrific. It has a nice sweet nutty aroma and a mild blend. It still has a nice coffee undertone which is fantastic. I don't enjoy coffee which tastes like flavored water. I had several cups. The roll on the breakfast had a nice chewy and soft texture. It really complimented the filling. The egg and vegetable center was warm, gooey and mild. I could have used something with a little more zip. I added salt and pepper. I enjoyed the breakfast, coffee, and location. I would try a different dish on a second visit. read more

We decided to try Penny's after searching for restaurants that offer Gluten Free options. Figured with the reviews we couldn't go wrong? The restaurant is clean and very comfortable. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. There is a large selection of coffee abd coffee drinks. Unfortunately Breakfast ends at 11am. My partner in crime consumes a Gluten Free diet per choice. They offer GF white bread and a few baked goods. The French dip on GF bread was good. My NY Rubin which is a grilled pastrami, Swiss, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing was meh Heads up! The dressing is Catalina which is very sweet for this sandwich. Plus the meat was very very thin and skimpy at that. Maybe 6 slices,seriously of very thin and not that great pastrami at that. Located generally at the center of the sandwich. One small slice of cheese that did not cover the soggy "grilled" bread. We did purchase a GF brownie, slice of cinnamon streusel cake, and a slice of lemon cake. Total cost $35.00. Way too expensive for the amount of meat present on our sandwiches. I guess I need to try breakfast and see how that goes. Costly, $10.00 per sandwich. read more

First time customer and I will not be back. I had heard that they had GF bread and was looking forward to a Rueben - my favorite sandwich. What I received was a joke. Tiny sandwich (smaller than regular sandwich bread at the grocery) and with hardly any corn beef, it was all mostly sauerkraut. I understand that GF bread may be a smaller size than the regular bread they serve for this sandwich but no excuse for such skimpy serving of the main ingredient.
