Franz Auto in New Paltz does excellent work! I had a very distressing sound on my Volvo XC70 that occurred with acceleration around 40mph and sounded like a transmission issue. Rose and the gang are spot on with recommendations and they do their best to accommodate a schedule but are always packed because they rock. I always think it's worth the wait. I've had one bad experience with them but they called me about it and fixed the issue with me only having to say, "Oh, okay. That's fine. Thanks!" Seriously. Was a loyal customer after having a wheel alignment on my truck a while back. Good service and a fair price. Not so impressed this time. Callled ahead for appointment to change transmission fluid and check a coolant leak. Left the car, returned at 5 expecting the car to be done after no call all day. Car was not touched. Not much of an apology but let it go due to pleasant past expirence. Brought the car back on Monday. They managed to change the transmission filter, thank god they did not "flush the transmission" as I said I expressly did not want that service. Cost to remove 8 small bolts and transmission filter,refill 2.5 quarts fluid over $200. I almost fell over. Diagnosed leaking radiator, gave me an estimate for $430 for a $50 part that takes an hour to put in. I actually thought the bill for all the work was the $200 or so for the transmission filter. Glad they gave me a heads up on radiator cost, Midas did it for $110 plus the radiator I provided that cost me $45. Genuine toyota. Must be nice to have a bunch of rich folks who know nothing about cars. Must make for easy pickings I guess. Oh, tire pressure sensor needed replacement, charged me a fair $30 for that. Also, if you are going to be talking to people who know the first thing about cars, your service writer should as well. "Flushing" a transmission is a questionable practice on a high mileage car. If it was done, it could not be undone and I would have been left wondering forever if they screwed up my car. Midas from now on. I had indicators that wouldn't go off and was recommended by Smitty's to come here. WORST DECISION EVER. Very unprofessional and overpriced. I was told that it would take a couple minutes after handing over my keys so I thought someone was checking my car out right away. While in the seating area one of the family members of the receptionist comes in and tries to jokes around. I smile out of courtesy but she begins to invade my personal space. The receptionist leaves and the family member pokes my knee with her finger asking if she should just rip the rest of my pants (I'm wearing jeans with ripped knees) and I ask her politely to stay 6ft away because she has no mask on, but she just brushes it off saying she was just shopping without one because the store didn't fuss about it. At this point I've been waiting for 15 min and I'm sketched out. I go look around the back office for the receptionist to find a worker on Facebook until he realizes I want help. I tell him I need to leave and ask for my keys back, at which point he decides to work on my car so I agree. I tell him everything that is wrong and he keeps telling to wait a few min until he done this and that until over an hour has passed. In the end he tells me to come back tomorrow for a sensor replacement and I get an estimate of $260. The place I usually go to quotes a diagnosis and sensor change for $80. I'm at a loss for words and should've waited until the place I usually go to opened up. I was also told these people were very nice and would help, but I regret coming here. Edit: I called back to ask about the estimate because and was told I wasn't to be charged anything yet because no work is done. I was surprised because the mechanic did spend time trying to diagnosis the problem. But I figured if I can get it done for $80 elsewhere that I will not get it done at Franz. I told the lady that who has very kind and understanding, but a second after I get off the phone the mechanic who worked on my car calls me furious that I will not go through with them even after I told him I was very appreciative of his time. He callously tells me never to come back. Again I'm very disheartened because I was told these were very nice people. But they prove again to be very unprofessional. read more

Bill and Rose took in our ailing 14 yr old wagon, kept it for more than a week, diagnosed a bad turbo that did not make financial sense to fix, and are handing it over to a donation program today. Bill does solid technical work and has spotted issues before I saw them (wrong tow hitch, fouled spark plug coils) but is humble and hands off work to other shops without hesitation. For 3 years their service excellence, reasonable cost and customer service has kept me going back to Franz Auto driving an hour either way. Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed and angry to learn that the price I paid for parts was literally 90% higher (several hundred dollars) than the same parts available from multiple sources online. I thought their price was unusually high so I checked as soon as I got home. Every major retailer had the same parts for over 90% less. Avoid at all cost. read more
