Visited Franzel a few weeks ago midweek and when I tasted the appetizer of leek soup I immediately knew I was in for a treat, actually when I first walked in I knew because of the Bavarian decor, steins and a lederhosen that brought me back to Germany when I vacationed there a few years ago for Octoberfest. Andrea took care of us and I ordered the Wanderlust sandwich that brought me just that. My wife had the Weinerschnitzel with red cabbage and spatzel and Jager sauce. It was absolutely delicious. Wifey and I tried Franzel out while visiting my parents and it was really good! The schnitzel was fantastic - the flavors were incredible and the mustard that was served with the dish was excellent. Wifey had the Goulash and the flavors were really good! Of course the beer was spot on as well. For slow motion Goshen it is really fine eats!!! Oh and the service was excellent as well. read more

Food Service and Ambiance is a 10 out of 10. First time eating German food and my palate was blown away. Delicious, clean ingredients and well priced. I would recommend this place to my friends and family. read more

Finally there is a German restaurant in this area so we had to check it out. Based on the good number of customers, there should be even more. The food was excellent. The service was somewhat slow (thats why it was only 4 stars) but the waitress admitted that it was her 1st day on the job so they get a pass on that. This was our 2nd time here....the first was when they were pretty new and the service was not good but the food was delicious! We decided to give it another try and glad we did. It was Father's Day and the place was hopping! We had a reservation and were seated immediately! The staff were friendly and efficient. Our waitress Chelsea was great and fun! Other than it being a small place, it was very noisy and couldn't hear the waitress at all. But the food makes up for that! We will spread the word to our friends and family! My husband used to live in Germany, so he was excited to hear that a new German restaurant opened within 30 minutes of us. We started with the bunter salad, which had a delicious tangy dressing. I chose the rouladen. I've actually never had rouladen before, and I enjoyed it. I think more sauce would have been nice, it was a bit dry, but overall it had good flavor. My husband got schnitzel. He thought it could have been pounded more thinly, but the flavor was great and he enjoyed the rahm sauce (mushroom cream sauce). My brother-in-law ordered schweine haxen, which he thought was a bit dry and underseasoned. We all agreed the spaetzle was great, and so was the red cabbage. They have a decent selection of German beers as well, for a good price - two of us enjoyed the schwarzbier. Our waitress was friendly. Overall, I think it is a nice addition to the area! read more

This was my second visit to Franzel and once again it did not disappoint. We walked in on a packed Sunday night with no reservation, but the staff was incredibly accommodating and quickly found us seats at the bar. We started with the Perogies and Tyrol Salad both absolutely delicious. For dinner, I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel with Zigeuner sauce, and my cousin had the Black Forest Chicken. The portions were massive, the flavors were spot-on, and we both left with full, happy bellies (and leftovers!). Franzel continues to impress with their warm service, cozy atmosphere, and outstanding food. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back again! read more

I love German food because I am from there, but this was not worth it. "Der Laeberkaese" was so bad. It was smothered with sauerkraut and mustard, in an effort to disguise the fact that it was old. Laeberkaese is not supposed to be served with sauerkraut on it. Maybe on the side, but never on it. "Die Schwarzwaelder Kirsch-torte" (Black Forest Cake) was stale. The whipped cream should be white but the cake's was yellowish, and the layers of the cake were dry, instead of being moist with a cherry liquor. The only reason they deserve a single star is because their beer selection was good. read more

This would be the 2nd time we've been here and again the food was fantastic. Service is a bit slow but it allows people to converse and digest their appetizers before the main course. Staff is super friendly. We had the pretzels, eggs, chicken cordon bleu, schweine haxen, wanderlust, potato leek soap and cheesecake for dessert and everything was perfect. Meals were steamy hot and delicious. Definitely recommend going here. read more

I really want this restaurant to succeed, because the vibe seems like it could be great, and the food is almost there -- I greatly miss the food from my home country, and really want choices of a good German restaurant within driving distance. Unfortunately, our visit on Friday evening was spoiled by a (not advertised on the website) too-loud musical duet who were enamored of their own sound, which wasn't even German music, just a variety of American oldies. They might have been fine unamplified in the small space, but they each kept turning their amplified sound up higher than the other, so all that happened was our ears hurt more and their music was made unlistenable. We could not hear each other or the waitress over the bellowing (can't really call something at that decibel singing) and very loud guitar. The food is hard to concentrate on when you are having to cover your ears during the painfully loud sound. It was also very jarring to have "Hotel California" and suchlike giving a cheap bar or street busker atmosphere instead of some lovely German music that would have added to the overall feel. I can't imagine it was easy to work in that space with all the noise; the server was doing her best, but it was hard for us to understand her and vice versa. We had asked for the volume to be turned down, but it crept back up quickly as each player kept turning himself up. I really felt sorry for those who were forced to work under the loud conditions. We should have left after our drinks and appetizers, which were quite good. Instead, since we'd come all that way, we courted hearing loss in order to experience the mix of mains. The Schweinehaxe, which was described as slow-roasted, crispy, and served with potato dumplings and red cabbage, was not as expected. There was no delightful crispy-crunchy skin as is found in the classic Bavarian dish; instead it was soggy and seemed braised rather than roasted, with no skin at all, although the flavor was decent. The "potato dumpling" (singular) wasn't a true potato dumpling, but seemed to actually be a mound of mashed potatoes molded into a rounder shape. The red cabbage, usually one of my favorite parts of a German meal, was underdone (crunchy, like coleslaw) and oddly bitter; I could not eat this at all. The pan sauce was too salty and whatever alcohol had been used to deglaze the pan had been added with too heavy a hand. I would not order this again. The Schnitzel was decent, if a little unevenly pounded. While listed on the menu as Weinerschnitzel, it is actually Schweineschnitzel Weiner Art, not truly Weinerschnitzel (which can only be called this when made with veal), but perhaps the person who made up the menu did not realize this distinction. It was served over Streichholzkartoffeln (matchstick-sized French fries) with lingonberry preserves and a nice lemon wedge for squeezing over. The meat was tender, very flavorful, and nicely breaded and fried. I would gladly eat this again. Another win was the Bronzinoschnitzel (known also as Wolfsbarsch or Seebarsch in Germany), a mild white fish filleted and very pleasantly (lightly) breaded and fried, served over rice with a delightful lemon wine sauce and accompanied by two delicious stalks of white asparagus. I would also gladly eat this again. The desserts we tried were too expensive (no prices were listed on the menu, and they turned out to be $12 per dessert) and did not hit the mark for texture or flavor. The Black Forest cake, while closer to an original German version, had a texture failure with the cake layers, which were too coarse, too open-crumbed, and too tall. While the German cake is usually drier compared to the American version, the layers will be thinner and the texture is still fairly fine, if necessarily less moist in order to take up the liquor that is traditionally brushed on. This version did have the traditional liquor, but it was a bit harsh and unevenly soaked into the too-thick and too-coarse cake so that some bites had none at all while others caused gasps from the strength. The cheesecake was almost there in terms of a true German cheesecake, with nearly good Quark flavor and texture, but sadly, it was overbaked, which ruined both flavor and texture. Perhaps if the music had not been pounding our heads so loudly, the food might have tasted better, so we will return at a time when there will be no loud music in order to give the other menu items a try. There are a number of dishes that I hope will be good, and I am sure that if the owner takes feedback and improves, there will be many reasons to return for years to come. I went to this restaurant for the 2nd time. It was a rainy Tuesday about 4:30 . There was 2 tables but when I asked for a table for 2(it took a while,busy). ? RESERVATION. NO! Oh and not oh I'm sorry no, but just NO. I really hope that the owner can work on his staff. The 1st time was great. Again no reservation on a Sunday around 4:30 . But the staff, could have been a Mother and daughter were phenomenal . I know, make a reservation. I go out to dinner about 4 more like 5 times a week and figure out where I want to go as I leave the house or am driving down the road. If I can't get in , oh well I'll just try another place. I was in Goshen today and after finishing my business saw this newebbbbr "German restaurant " on Yelp and went there at lunch time, looking forward to trying their Wiener Schnitzel, but the item they call Wiener schnitzel on the menu is not, because it's made with pork and not veal. So I order the pork schnitzel with potato salad, but the schnitzel was not pounded thin enough and ended up with thicker pieces with an old burnt oil taste. My dish also came with spätzle instead of the potato salad I ordered, although I didn't return the item because of the hassle. The waitress should have caught that , before bring it to the table. Sadly I can't recommend Franzel Restaurant for German cuisine. read more

Sandwich and side dishes were all good. My companions both ordered sauerbraten and loved it.

Contrary to all the positive reviews my parties' experience was quite different. Our waitress was very unprofessional with the occasional profanity being heard and a complete lack of attentiveness to our table. We were looking so forward to a sauerbraten dinner. When our plates arrived they were very disappointing. Each serving had four of the tiniest (like 2" x 3") pieces of meat that look more like tiny medallions as opposed to a slice of a marinated beef roast. On two of our dinners one of those pieces were nothing but fat. I would have loved to have more to satisfy our palates as the flavor was quite nice. And then the dumpling. There simply wasn't enough sauerbraten gravy to adequately moisten the dumpling. We asked the server for more gravy. It took quite a while to receive it and when we did we were given a typical brown gravy, not sauerbraten gravy. And then to add insult to injury, when paying our bill we were charged for the extra gravy. During our whole dinner we were never asked if we would like beverage refills. Very disappointing. Maybe they were having a bad day, maybe they were running out of roast but we will not be returning again. Back to Mountain Brauhaus for future German meals! read more
