This cozy German restaurant in New Windsor was fantastic. The service was exceptional and our waitress was very kind. We ordered pierogis for an appetizer, which had the perfect soft/crisp balance and was nicely paired with sautéed onions and sour cream. Perfectly portioned and not overly filling. For the main course, we had goulash and Cajun salmon salad. The goulash was authentic and delicious with fresh rye bread, paired with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. The salmon was crispy on the outside, while maintaining the succulent flaky interior. It was served over a bed of spring mix and fresh mozzarella with a delicious balsamic drizzle. Don't walk, run to this amazing eatery!

Warm greetings and service in this German tavern that has been in Newburgh since 1934! The menu has lots of traditional dishes of bratwurst, spaetzle, schnitzel, roast pork, Casa potato pancakes etc.... Sandwiches for lunch range from $10-$14. Cooked to order specials of stuffed cabbage $16 Perfect comfort food and they have a full bar. Lots of photos of the original tavern in the 30's to check out.

Goulash with Spatzel and red cabbage... OMG flavor!

Cant judge a book by the cover here. Seriously, you will be underwhelmed when you walk in. Fortunately big smiles and friendly hellos leave you forgetting the drab appearance pretty quickly. The waitress we had was awesome - My drink was always full and I wanted for nothing. I got the goulash. Meat so tender I didnt even need my dentures . Red cabbage and Spätzel was on point and full of flavor. Wifey had the pork Schnitzel Jager. SO good! I cant wait for someone to suggest German again so I can insist on Gus's... Parking took a second to figure out, but tackle that and your in for a culinary treat in a relaxed environment.

Stuffed Cabbage and pierogis was delicious. The service was great. The owners treat you like one of the family.

If you're look for authentic german cuisine the Jaeger Haus is the place to go!!! I am looking forward to our next visit.

There used to be numerous German restaurants in NYC and throughout upstate NY, but over the years those numbers have dwindled substantially to a handful.  A relatively new addition to the local Hudson Valley dining scene Jaeger Haus was started in 2018 (in a 70 year old restaurant building) and serves up seriously tasty and authentic tasting German beer, wine, and food.  We've dined there a few times over the last two years of visiting this year--the mood is relaxed, the beer is delicious, and food remind us of our travels to Germany and Austria.  The menu is tight and by that I mean it's focused on what they do well--which is traditional German food. While I wish they might add a few classic German appetizers to their menu for variety, their range of entrees provides ample choice and I am slowly making my way through those selections. Lola, one of our servers for the evening, quickly took our drink orders.  I ordered a mug of Hofbrau Original Lager (on tap) and after being given a tasting, my wife ordered a pint of Hofbrau Weissbier (which is similar to the sort of wheat beer she occasionally enjoys).  So refreshing.  A basket of house-made thinly sliced Roggenbrot (rye bread) arrived soon after our drinks with softened butter, lightly sprinkled with sea salt. We passed on the appetizers, knowing that our entrees would be substantial.  My wife ordered the Wienershcnitzel which comes with braised red cabbage and house-made spaetzle lightly sauced with a cream gravy.  These are classic sides which one can find served in restaurants from Vienna or Munich to Heidelberg or Berlin.  I ordered exactly the same thing (having tried other dishes on our prior visits), except I ordered my Wienerschnitzel "a la Holstein" (with a fried local farm egg).  The egg, especially the large yolk, provides an added level of lusciousness to the crispy veal.   Our meals arrived in due course.  They were gorgeous to look at and ate even better than they looked.  The spaetzles were soft and fluffy, the red cabbage was rich and well spiced, and the veal . . . the veal was heavenly.  Crisp on the outside, fork tender on the inside, dipping into a bit of the egg yolk (in my case); goodness what a delightful taste sensation. Just delicious.  We both earned "clean plate" certificates tonight--suitable for framing--felt satiated, but not overly full (which is where we like to end a meal).  We nursed our beers a bit longer, sharing memories from this special day, paid our bill (the bill encouraged customers to tip in cash, which we did), thanked the staff, bid the co-owner "danke schön und Wiedersehen" and we were on our way.

This was, sadly, not a good meal and based on expectations easily one of the most disappointing experiences I've had in recent memory. I came here yesterday with my top-tier chum from the Kingdom of Sussex, along with my #1 Honorary Young Pup Chum, fresh off a 20-mile walk down the Sussex Branch Rail Trail - so a bit tired and very hungry. Black Forest got me (and my appetite) in the best situation for them, in theory. Unfortunately it stayed just a theory. The atmosphere in here by far is the biggest selling point. I love a good taxidermy situation, and this place had it in droves. We were seated near a bear, and had eyes on numerous other wildlife, preserved for eternity. The stained glass throughout the restaurant is also pretty wild - it feels like you decided to go to church in a European hunting lodge. It's also deceptively large in there, which I discovered later as I tried to locate the bathroom (there is no signage for that) and wandered into two or three different dining rooms. Just wild and really does set this place apart from virtually any other restaurant in the area (maybe the far superior Walpack Inn can lay a claim?). I was intrigued by the Potato Pancakes w/ Applesauce on the appetizer menu, which ended up being the best item I ate. As you can see in the attached photo, they're basically big hash browns. They were good, and the applesauce made for an interesting palate combo. In what ended up being a bizarre theme throughout the meal, the accompanying applesauce came in a small plastic container that you had to open. This to me is one of the more egregious self-inflicted wounds I've seen from a restaurant, but also pretty fixable. This wasn't a crab shack at the beach or a taqueria in Newton - this is a restaurant with white tablecloths. Why aren't you serving the accompanying sides in a nicer dish, like a ramekin? What makes it more mystifying is that they HAD ramekins or something similar - they served the wrapped butter for the stale dinner rolls in it. I genuinely don't have a clue what the thought process was, but it honestly cheapened the optics and is something they should stop doing immediately. For my entree, I went classic German with the veal wienerschnitzel and a side of spatzle. The wienerschnitzel itself was fine - I've honestly had better from a food truck in Jersey City called Mordi's (I just checked and sadly they've closed), but it had no sauce or anything so it was super dry and overall not that tasty as a result. It would have even been an upgrade to get one of their infamous plastic containers of basically any condiment. The spatzle was honestly terrible; I had an excellent version of this at an Austrian restaurant in FiDI called Schilling (which has now converted to a French restaurant, apparently; I can't with these closures. Lord.), and this was just utterly tasteless. My chum likened it to "brain noodles," meaning the noodles you'd use in a blindfold game around Halloween. Fair, but even some of those probably had some flavor to them. Huge miss. I'm not sure why I kept going at this point but I decided to end this situation with the Black Forest Cake. It was a little stale (maybe it's kept in the same area as the dinner rolls?), but it was okay. Could have been worse, so I'm taking that as a victory of sorts. The chocolate mousse within it got positive remarks from my other dining companions in the context of their items, so that's probably the play if you're hitting up the dessert menu. The service was mediocre. Our waitress was very nice when she came to our table, which was infrequent. It seemed like she was waiting for food to come out (which took a while) as the context for a visit, rather than taking initiative to check on us. The Young Pup Chum waited close to 15 minutes for a second soda, which shouldn't have happened, especially given that we were there at a VERY slow time (just before 4pm). And the price point was honestly close to insulting. Neither of us are opposed to plunking down some Jacksons for a nice meal, but getting a bill for $200 (plus tip!) for not great food was not a fun feeling to close out our afternoon. I hate to end this on a dark note, but given that my two recommendations for German food in the area have both closed, you might not have much of a choice but to come here if you're hankering for schnitzel.

It's located right next door to a German butcher, which adds to the old-world feel before you even walk in. We've only visited the small outdoor seating area along 2nd Avenue, and it's become one of our favorite places to relax, enjoy a drink, and watch the neighborhood go by. The patio is fairly small, so tables fill up quickly. If you're bringing your pup, I'd recommend a carrier or having them on all fours. There just isn't enough room for a stroller without making the space feel cramped. The star of the menu (at least for us) is the giant soft pretzel. It's perfectly warm, chewy, and served with Dijon mustard--simple but absolutely delicious. If you're ordering beer, be prepared...the pints are enormous! Mom isn't much of a beer drinker, so she ordered the rosé cider instead and loved it. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is friendly, and it's an ideal stop if you're looking to unwind rather than rush through a meal. Dogba's Verdict If your humans enjoy a good German beer, a giant pretzel, and a little people watching, Heidelberg is definitely worth a stop.
