I called the store and explained that I wanted to return the shirts for size and if I included a Fed Ex return envelope would they exchange....without hesitation, they agreed. I was told to address the envelope to Rhonda. After receiving the shirts, Rhonda called me and explained that she could not replace the shirts exactly.... color and logo were different. I said that was fine, I was more concerned about size. Within two days, I received the right shirts. Customer Service was amazing......I am most grateful!

I fanned out on the boat when I heard that factoid and then later in the store - to my husband's amusement. (I grilled the two staffers who were working that evening about Nicolas Cage ) Scrimshanders is a small store, but it is packed with what you could get as unique souvenirs/gifts but also inventory for more serious collectors ($$$). As a personal trinket for myself, I bought a nautical knotwork bracelet. For my musician husband, I gifted him a whalebone guitar pick that had hand painted illustration on it; it was a perfect gift that would serve as a way for him to remember our first trip to Newport together.

As with many of the little-known but lovely things about this sweet town, tourists will often (sadly) overlook Spring Street which is home to many small, locally-owned novelty businesses and beautiful colonial architecture. My favorite thing about this little shop is its history; being of humble beginnings, and where many years of hard work and creativity has paid off. The Breakell's started their business in the basement of their home only to outgrow various spaces throughout the years. At their current location, there is a very cool workshop located near the retail store where you can watch the artists venerate in their extraordinary and ancient craft. All of the items are created on-site, and designs tend to give nod to nostalgic Rhode Island traditions. Where else are you going to find handcrafted, high quality jewelery molded into shapes like the Rhode Island Red rooster, horseshoe crabs and jellyfish? They also sell special collections for weddings, graduations, birthdays and so on. Each year they create a signature snowflake pattern, and the locals rush to the store once it's released to see it while checking off their holiday lists. The design is fashioned into earrings, necklaces and pins, and my friends never seem to grow tired of receiving complements from the assembly each year. The silver necklaces are quite beautiful and for $45.00, it's a pretty special gift. The Breakells once created an exquisite sterling silver broccoli pin after the Bushs publicly announced their disdain for the vegetable, and ordered it to be removed from the White House menu. The pin was sent to First Lady, Barbara Bush and of course, later to the Clintons and Gores who smirkingly announced that they were, in fact, proud fans of the undistinguished veggie. For $95.00, it's worth every penny, and the ideal present for the dietitian, chef, foodie or ha! politician in your life.
