As soon as you walk into Freak Lunchbox, you're transported to a shop that looks like it belongs in a Willy Wonka movie. Which is perfect, since you're in a candy store.
Freak Lunchbox carries an assortment of fun novelties ranging from bacon flavoured items (lip balm, toothpaste, mints) to collectible figures to nostalgic toys, but that's not the meat of the shop. Like I said, they're a candy store.
The first thing you see when you come in is a collection of Wonka bars and candies (Nerds, Sweet Tarts, etc), and a display of bulk Jelly-Bellys off to the left. Go past that, and you hit the novelty items. Keep going, and you hit pay dirt. The bulk candy section. This is probably why most people visit. Although, for me, this is why the store only gets 3 stars. The selection is amazing, featuring candy that you can't find in other places. But there's also a lot of candy you can get anywhere. For siginificantly less (check the Bulk Barn for examples). In the middle of the bulk section, they feature a lot of international chocolate bars. Things like York bars and Double Decker. If you're a fan of UK chocolate, definitely take a look here.
Finally, I'll mention the milkshakes. They not only do the classics like Chocolate and Vanilla, but the have custom mixes as well. Heaven is the one that comes to mind immediately. It includes vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, peanut butter, and Nutella, and is probably one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. If you're downtown on a hot summer day, stop by and see what they have available. There's literally a shake for every personality.
The more I think about it, the more I want to give Freak Lunchbox more than 3 stars. But unless the price of the bulk candy comes down to a more reasonable level (several of the easy to find candies are actually less expensive to buy in the factory packages at a gorcery store), 3 stars is what they get. read more
