Fred Meyer - Department Stores Near Me - Portland, Oregon

I've been shopping at various Fred Meyers since 1975 when there were still some Eve's Buffets and hard liquor bars in Fred Meyer stores. All Fred Meyer stores are basically the same except for size and decrepitude. Small Fred Meyers are mainly grocery stores while the large Fred Meyers are like Target or Wal Mart with clothing, hardware, furniture, electronics, and garden departments. Then there's the aspect of decrepitude. Some Fred Meyers are old and run down while others have been recently remodeled. I think the Stadium Fred Meyer downtown is the most recently remodeled, having bought back the Hollywood Video building and expanding it into a huge deli with a Starbucks. The large Fred Meyer at 148th & Division (they have clothing, furniture, bed and bath, sporting goods, electronics, etc.) is probably the most decrepit of all Fred Meyer stores. They still have the self serve coffee instead of a Starbucks or Peets, they have no bottle return, and the neighborhood is ghetto. Thanks to them no longer recycling cans and bottles, the neighborhood accumulates more bottles and cans tossed aside on sidewalks. Kroger has been taking Freddy's through a slow conversion since they bought the chain maybe 10 years ago. Most noticeably to me, the inexpensive deli sandwiches like the "perfect peanut butter and jelly" for $1.50 and the $3.99 hoagie with the odd packet of "Submarine Dressing" instead of mustard or mayo have disappeared. Instead we're offered some way overpriced Boars Head creations which are all over $5. Go down to about 165th and Division to the Subway for a $6 foot long on fresh bread instead of this stale dried out sad thing. Seriously, the Boars Head brand may offer quality ingredients but these sandwiches are a joke. You get a stale roll that's maybe 7" long, wilted lettuce, maybe 3 tomato slices and the famous Boars Head turkey or ham or whatever. Sometimes there's mustard and mayo packets, sometimes not. These sandwiches are so atrocious that I saw one sitting in the gutter on 148th Avenue for over a week. Someone threw it out of their car in disgust. Sometimes they take stale old chicken strips and put them in a wrap. I felt as if they'd played a cruel joke on me after I bought one of those. Sometimes they still have the old focaccia sandwiches... Highlander Beef, Smoked Turkey, Turkey Club and Chicken Parmesan (which would actually be good if they made it correctly, with parmesan and a bit more sauce.) They've gone up to $5.99 but are always buried somewhere in the case instead of prominently displayed like the Boars Head stuff. Overall, it's just another grocery store but they need to rework their entire line of sandwiches. read more

This store is a joke. 8 out of 10 times I go here there are little to no carts. If there are no carts how are you supposed to shop? What kind of business model is that? Oftentimes a pile of carts with locked up wheels will be blocking the entrance from the east side. I ended up having to go back to the parking lot and get my own cart today. There are never more than 2 checkers available and the lines are usually long. The store has 2 sets of self checkout registers that they are very pushy in trying to get you to use. I don't work there I shouldn't have to ring up my own groceries. The staff seem like they couldn't care less whether you were there or not. There are a few employees that are exceptions to this but for the most part you are ignored. The checker and the bagger carry on conversations about store gossip that is entirely unprofessional (I really don't care to hear about who is getting fired and why). Then there are the employees who smoke. Nowhere else have I shopped where you had to walk through the employee smoking area if parked close to the building. There is a covered drive-through/breezeway that is intended for loading up groceries, when it rains the employees smoke in there which is on the way to the east entrance. I have complained to the management but they don't care: they have said that they won't make their employees walk further to smoke (but who cares about customers, right?), and they have also said that that can't do anything if they don't catch them in the act, yet never go try to catch them. There is no other Fred Meyer that allows this. I have a cousin that has worked at different locations, and employee smoking was either prohibited on the property, or was designated well away from customers. Not this one, though, management insists on not protecting customers, including pregnant women and children, from the numerous dangers of smoking. What it comes down to is that I shouldn't have to walk my kids through a cloud of employee cigarette smoke. Ultimately, this store is poorly run, the employees don't care, and management cares even less. And I don't think they would care if you found somewhere else to shop....but they should. When I am with my family, we will go miles out of our way to safely shop elsewhere. I only go to this one when I am alone, and only need a few things. Wait, have I mentioned the assaults on the property yet? Yeah, they have a good recurring problem with violence, but the security is still a joke. read more

"One Stop Shopping" - Truer words were never spoken. Bank, grocery store, jeweler, deli, bakery, pharmacy, garden, electronics, bed/bath... all under one roof! I love being able to pick up some Lipitor, fried chicken, fertilizer, table cloth, and socks all in one trip. 'MERICA! Fruits and veggies are always fresh. The Banana Nut cake from the bakery ($17.99 for 1/4 sheet) is delicious and always a hit at birthday parties. There's always a decent selection of household plants, although I think the orchids are over-priced. The employees, everyone from the cashiers to the bakery and deli ladies are super friendly and helpful. Even the CHASE employees are pleasant to interact with. This particular Freddies sits conveniently between my home and the 205, so on any given week, I stop by this Freddies at least 3 times. read more

The store is alright... It seems a little chaotic the way the groceries are set up, and definitely the way the parking lot is set up... But maybe it's just the customers there that make it seem so out of control... But the thing that makes me dislike this store, and possibly not go back unless I'm very very desperate? Brandy. This girl is a cashier there, and apparently she hates her job and/or life. My boyfrirend went through the line first, and she said that proper "did you find everything alright?" but in a very nasty tone. When I say "nasty" I mean "I hate my life". Anyways, she wasn't friendly, but did what she was supposed to do to ring us up. Here's the kicker... I handed her my Rewards card, she snatched it from me and then threw it back onto the little check writing stand. She grabbed it from me and then threw it at me. Seriously? In my head, when she grabbed it, I was already like, "that's a little abrupt..." And then she confirmed she was being rude when she threw it back in my direction. Is that seriously ok? You average neighborhood friendly Fred Meyers. I've been to nicer ones around town. This one is average, same quality as the one on foster. Area around this location is dangerous and ghetto. Parking can become a war zone. There are loitering people outside that greet you. Most employees here are unenergetic and seem like they rather be other places than here. read more

This is my local Freddy's, and I end up shopping there a few times a week. The pros about this store: -prices are reasonable -selection is good-I can usually find what I'm looking for -very quick checkout and lots of lanes open -the grocery or main part of the store never seems understaffed Cons: -pharmacy is usually understaffed and employees are uninformed (I now go elsewhere for prescriptions) -I literally had to follow a chatting voice on the phone to find an employee in electronics dept -store has a depressing, outdated feeling Overall, it's a good store and I'd recommend it. There is a Safeway not too far away that is less depressing, but the prices are much higher, and of course I can't buy printer cables or hardware there. read more

Very nice staff . Great selection of everything & good deals abound. Great meat department ( love the black angus beef ) , it doesn't cost that much more and worth every penny . Occasionally, Freddys will have a sale on Carhart's clothing that's better priced than the factory store by the airport is at any time. This is the Freddy's of my childhood. And even some of the service folks of my childhood still work here. My two faves are Leanna (a manager) and Steven (u-scan). But I haven't met anybody at this Freddy's that isn't good with customer service. The selection of organics is fair here, and while it isn't the fanciest Fred Meyer, it has definitely stepped up the layout over the years (I remember when the deli was in the back of this store , and the pet section directly in front of it, with the produce all to the left and front). It's not our local Freddy's but we come here when we're on our way to the folk's house in my old neighborhood and they rarely ever lack anything we're looking for. read more

This Fred Meyers is particularly super busy. Sometimes it's hard to find a parking spot unless you want to walk a good distance. One thing I LOVE about this Fred Meyers is their customer service in the bakery. I always come here for the best tiramisu cakes - actually it's a sheet cake that Kroger orders and they can cut it to the size you need. It's super afforadable and really hits the spot. I've also ordered their regular round double deck chocolate cakes a few times. The cake decorator does a great job customizing all the cakes and meeting your vision. The base price of the round double layer chocolate cake with raspberry filling was only $11.99! We decided to add berries and fancy it up for a grand total of $16 :) The decorator will call you for a specific quote and meet any budget you have. Can't beat those prices and got a declicously beautiful cake. read more

As far as Customer Service, Alex and Cody are great! However, there are never enough lanes open. The customer rep @ the "Self Check-Out" no matter who it is, is always talking to another employee, and hardly ever check to see who's having trouble scanning/alcohol age verficiation, etc. The pharmacy employees are good as well. read more

FRED MEYERS You have Pissed me off for the last time. I'm not making my living by returning cans but I thought I would return some tonight and You have failed so completely to have any customer service at all I literally can't even see straight! I like to shop later in the evening because it's quieter and less hectic. If I want to be around unruly screaming children I can go to work for that. I showed up tonight unaware of their policy about can and bottle returns ending at 9pm. I was outside in the dark and the cold and tried to use their call button to get assistance because the machines were off. I'm out there alone waiting waiting waiting and finally I decided to load my cans back up and go into the store with them. I felt that if I asked I could get someone to count them. I asked a checker and she said she didn't think so. I proceeded to the customer service desk where I thought I would be getting some customer service. WRONG! I thought that the man working at the desk would help me. I told him that this is the only night I can come over to the store this week and could he please see if someone could help. He called whoever's job it is to come count the cans and when he got off the phone this is what he told me. It's their policy to shut down the counting of cans at 9pm and this is a BAD Neighborhood. I told him that this is my neighborhood and that's pretty offensive. It's not a bad neighborhood and then he had the temerity to say that it was unsafe to be out there at this time of night. Thanks Jackass I, a woman, was just out there and waiting around having pushed the call button, and no one came. The "customer service" dude is like 6ft tall. I was so mad that I left the cart full of cans there and had to walk away. This store has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE! I lost my bags on the bottom of my cart which I had them sitting there upon going through checkout, once I realize this; I ran back to the last place I'd been just by the shoe and clothing area and voicfully, announced to anyone whom could hear me, has anyone seen my bags? To my pleasant surprise not only did the women that had previously directed me to what I asked, and was eagerly looking "immediately around " to help me but I then heard the man whom had found my lost shop bags on an isle or so over send a response... yeah here, are they green.... and yes they were!!!. Went to the electronic dept to download pictures off my friends phone. We were told that the system is new. The one associate was very helpful and even called another store, but he was swamped with customers and the assistant manager never helped. After close to an hour we had to go because of another appointment with no pictures downloaded because no one is trained to use the new system. Worst store ever!! Prices are way too high, checkers are extremely slow. Lines too long. A It's always horribly hot on there and a checker told me they're to cheap to increase the AC. I bought a car battery for 110 bucks in beaverton from their district one and within 6 months time the battery went bad while I was in California with no Fred Meyers and I had to buy the cheapest battery I could find without turning in the messed up battery. It came out to 143 bucks. So I spent 253 bucks for a battery. It's not in their policies says this Fred Meyer here off division and I had a rude remark from costumer service from the male associate and the female felt bad but didn't know what to do. I dislike the attitude I got. I was stranded in California and could not do anything but try to charge and battery at a auto zone and they tried and told me it was a bad battery. So next time you have to carry your battery to a store to charge it I hope you would know the bullshit I had to go through. I have receipts and can show from card transition I bought the battery. So Something that should at least last a year to 5 years lasted barely 6 months. And to come back to hear their policies fuck you over. I could not get a return. They said they can switch it out. But I said wtf am I suppose to do with two batteries.... so much for shopping at Fred Meyers I will not be going to any of your stores and will get my friends and family to do their shopping at other places of competition. There to buy a Christmas tree and Christmas bulbs. They had a tree on display with large red Christmas bulbs and I asked the manager where they are so I can purchase them he said they don't sell them. I said why do you have them on the tree if they're not for sale he says it is just part of the fixtures in the store. So I said you show them on the trees but you don't sell them you're just trying to make the trees look better to sell them. The manager said I will sell them for $20 each and I will lose my job if you want to buy them. I simply said take them off of the trees and put up what you sell don't make things look like something you would like, bcan't get them. To me that is false advertisement I was not happy at all. I purchased the tree and later went to Walmart and they had a better one for $15 less so I got my money back at Fred Meyer's. Oh yeah and they had the bulbs I wanted there too. Now on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I am getting harassed by a former employees relative. They don't like people speaking their minds and the truth. I spend time looking for undented canned foods then the cashiers just toss them in the bags. This review is strictly for the deli here .. I've been coming here for about a year now and I've just given into giving a review. I hate this deli yet some how I still find myself coming here. The food in the cold selection is fresh somewhat , that's why I'm giving 2 instead of 1 star rating. I HATE THAT YOU STOPPED MAKING THE YELLOW CHICKEN CURRY SALAD!!!!! That used to be my favorite ... Now if I want it the closest one that does it is over off interstate in N Portland.... Also, for the cold part of the deli, you really need to step up your game on how many items/different bigger selection you have in the case. The selection here is so strange and unusual compared to the most of the Fred Meyers, like a red beat salad concoction??? most of them have the same things, which usually includes the chicken Cesar pasta salad that for some odd reason, all the other ones don't add the little red peppers, this location does. I'm curious to know if this is because of the owner /manager of this location or the people actually working in the deli deciding to spruce things up. On another note, please figure something else out for packaging up the turkey/cream cheese cran. wrap.. The way you have it is disgusting and I've now thrown 2/3 wraps that I've bought at this location due to them being stuffed into a plastic sack and zip tied for it to just become grossly soggy and inedible.. I really wish this location would step up their cold deli selection. The one south gate Fred Meyer in Medford OR , now their deli is one to follow. They do everything right ! read more

I typically love These stores. I've never had an issue but today must be a full moon or something. I got a pair of boots for Christmas and called to see if I they he a certain size I wanted to try. Both the woodvillage and gresham store were incredibly put out by my request for them to look for the boots. The woodvillage store just automatically told me they didn't carry the specific brand. The Gresham store tried to tell me Fred Meyer doesn't carry what I'm looking for. Interesting because that's where my cousin bought them and the tag on the box says Fred Meyer. I asked if she could look through a computer system to find them. She informed me she would have to go to the stock room to do that. I told her I would wait. Finally after getting on the computer she found that Freddie's does indeed carry the boots and, shocking, and that the division store had plenty. I called the Division store and the girl was incredibly sweet and helpful. I hate to have to search around for helpful sales associates but at least Division seems to have one on staff today. read more
