First off, this business is no longer "Jay's Mowers and Chainsaw" - it is Rix Small Engine Repair having been sold twice. The new owner is "Eric" - he seems decent enough, but is very down on his luck. I've had good service at this shop before, but over the past year, things have declined significantly. Dropped off a pole saw to have repaired last August. Never got a call for over six months. Business phone number 503-287-6610 is disconnected. Finally, I went there to inquire. Found out Eric was on the verge of forclosure. Orders stacked up; my pole saw was "lost and in storage". Eric promised to call soon, but he never does. Not the first time. The place is a mess: completely disorganized and in despair. Seems sketchy and junky now. I hate to see a good shop and business decay, but feel it is my duty to warn others: DON'T COME HERE EXPECTING YOUR REPAIR TO BE SERVICED RIGHT. You've been warned. read more

There's no Zero Star option. There should be, maybe even a Negative Star option. I called Jay's and told him that I had 2 cordless mowers that needed work - I was specific about the type of work needed. He said "bring 'em down," so I did. Looking around his shop it was overwhelmingly filled with gas mowers - looked more like a graveyard than a fix-it shop. Only a couple of other cordless, stacked on top of the stacks of mowers. I demonstrated the problems, and he then confided that he'd have to learn how to fix them. Welcome to the 21st Century. I asked how long and he said at least 2 weeks. I called at least 2 weeks later, a lady answered saying that Jay still had to learn how to fix them, so I told her that I would be by to pick them up on Saturday, ready or not. When I got there, it was obvious by the amount of dirt and dust that they were abandoned outside for the duration, untouched. And, the lady called me rude because I was an irate customer. Don't let the cluttered shop scare you. I've taken my lawn mower to three different repair places in Portland, and this one was by far the best! The other shops took forever, despite promises to the contrary. Jay's did the repair quickly during peak season and charged a reasonable price. read more

My mower was losing power slowly but surely. So I took my mower to A1 having previously gotten good service there. However, they were totally full and couldn't take on another mower so they recommended Jay's. Gave a call and they said bring it over but it might be 3 weeks until they could get to it. Given I was going to be out of town, that was fine since I'd need something on return. Their lot was packed with mowers and Jay (I presume) and 3 others were going at it fast and furious. I prepped for a wait to be seen but the young lady at the counter got my details and before I could finish, one of the helpers came up and said, "Does she start?". "Yep," I said and he proceeded to crank it and it started right up with a black puff. He grabbed a screwdriver, popped off the air filter cover and it was covered in oil. I asked why that might happen, fearing the worst. He said it often happens if the mower is turned up on it's side with the filter on the downside. I remembered having done that to clear the underside of matted grass. They popped in a new air filter, recommended an oil change which I can do and sent me out with a $12 bill. This was one of those times where a less ethical person could have tacked on a service call bill for $50 or more. In and out in less than 15 minutes, informed as to how to avoid the issue in the future and the mower hums like a top. Support this kind of work folks, go see Jay. read more

My lawn mower and my string trimmer quit working on the same day. I took them to Jay's and was told they were backlogged on repairs for 3 weeks *ugh* but I decided to go ahead and leave them there for repair despite the super long wait, because of the all the great reviews on Yelp. So glad I did, because just 1 week later they called and said my equipment was ready for pick up. Whoo-hoo!!! $92 total for service and repair of both. read more

Always quick, always friendly, always reasonable! I've owed Jay's a quick five star review for quite some time now! This outfit has been servicing my gas powered mower for years. Every time I take it in (not too often, thank goodness - love my Honda mower!), they've fixed the mower quickly, and I've been almost shocked at how little they charge. On one memorable occasion, I accidentally mowed over a medium-sized stump in my yard and completely mangled the blades. I was afraid that I'd finally have to buy a new machine, but I took it to Jay's, and they found a new blade from an old mower they had on the lot (same model as mine), sharpened and installed it... Three hours and $25 later, my mower was ready to go! My only suggestions for them are that they (a) put up a free web site that lists their hours, and (b) have a functioning answering machine. :) read more

I brought my Scotts push mower in to get sharpened. And all and all they did a good job. Jay seems like an honest and very hard working man. All and all good. I think it is a family business so I like that. They quoted me $55. I just took a star away for two reasons, first, you must notify if price will be more than what was quoted before I pick it up. And second, I had to bring it back as my silent mower was Not so silent when I went to use it, blades too close. It would be no big deal but I drive 25 minutes one way just to go back then 25 mins home. I'd recommend them though. read more

This place sharpens and services REEL mowers! This is the only business I could find in the Vancouver metro area that would work on a reel mower. Jay, the owner of 30+ years, is the one that is doing the sharpening and service so you know it's getting done correctly. Before taking my mower in, the ends of my grass blades where brown from being torn; now the blades of grass are cut clean and is easier to push. Even passes the paper cutting test! Service and lube totals $60. Well worth the price and wait. read more

I dont usually leave reviews but had to here. I brought my parent's lawnmower and edger to Jays for tuneups because of the great reviews on Yelp. They originally told me 2-3 weeks and it took 6; however it was beginning of summer so I can understand they busy. They incredibly disorganized in terms of invoices, billing, etc but I can understand as some places dont believe in computers. However when THEY CHARGED $220 that I couldnt unerstand. $220 TO REPLACE A SPARK PLUG, CHANGE OIL AND PUT A LITTLE GREASE ON A LAWNMOWER AND EDGER!!!! As they had already done the work we had no choice but to pay. Hopefully this review will help someone else not get taken to the cleaners by this place. read more

Sorry about those other bad reviews. I've been doing business with Jay's for a few years and have never had a problem. To the contrary...they are always fair - helpful, etc. And always a great selection of used lawn power equipment that they guarantee for 90 days. I've bought about 5 different items from him -- plus blades, etc. And they've done repair and diagnostic work for me a few times. Always prompt and reasonable, and courteous, extremely knowledgeable, Always! Jay's help might look a bit 'tough' and rugged, but they explain things extremely well, no rush. They want happy customers. They are some of the best salesmen I've encountered anywhere. And they know the technical stuff - so you trust them. (And I've told them that!) Whenever he's ordered parts for me - I always get a phone call a couple days later when the parts are in. I bought an electric mower there about 3 years ago, and the switch is now touchy. I asked one of the guys about it. He took me to the parts bin - showed me what the inside looks like - where and why it's wearing, and how to take it apart without springs flying all over the place, and how to adjust the switch mechanism. Thanks -- that will save me either a bunch of dollars -- a bunch of headaches -- or.....because it's an inexpensive item - it'd probably no be worth the cost to fix it. But now I will. And I'll come back as I always have. They're all good guys - working hard, charging a fair price, doing good work. Hoo-ray for Jay's -- kind of the old fashioned way to do business. Awesome, old school, no nonsense down to earth friendly people. I've had my push mower a long time and I have never had any issues with it. I brought it to these guys for a blade sharpen, which was super inexpensive. He lifted it out my SUV and put it back in for me. He sharpened the blades and suggested I should change the oil. I'm fairly certain that in the 12 years I've had this mower, the oil has not been changed. He said it was easy to do myself, but I said I would rather pay him. That too was quite well priced. Both things were super fast while I waited, which was great! (I had called another place that rarely answers the phone and they told me 3 weeks.) I'm not in the market for a new mower, but I did see that they have some pretty nice used ones for sale also. Overall, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place for all of your gas engine powered yard equipment. Jay and his workers are super. I've been three times in 3 months and it is great to see a service organization function. Nothing fancy, just a guys with dirt under their fingernails. In fact, that is the intriguing part. I can trust what they tell me. I had an old mower serviced that wouldn't start. About $100. A few months later it wouldn't start again. May have been a different problem, hard to tell, but no question, the work was done at no charge. I drove across town just because of how I was treated and served. These guys are terrific! I bought a used lawn mower from them a few months ago. Works wonderfully. Best thing about them is customer service! We're talking old-school, like you don't see anymore, customer service. When I bought the lawn mower, it was a little more than I had planned to spend, but was way better than I hoped to find. The guys made sure the oil and gas were topped up and started it up for me so I could see how well it worked. They even loaded it into my car. Then last weekend, one of my kids said it wouldn't start. So I went out to see what was up. No gas. No wonder it wouldn't start. When I poured gas in, it ran straight back out. Looked and the gas line was missing. I figured it had caught on something and fallen off somewhere in the yard. So I loaded the mower up in the car and drove up to Jays to get a new line. They looked at it right away. Got the gas line back on and even topped up my gas and checked the oil. Then loaded it back in my car. And... no charge because I had bought it from them! My poor lawnmower has been through all kinds of abuse because of me. First, take my advice, only pour about 6 to 8 ounces of oil in your machine and you will save some $$ and grief. That said, I overfilled my lawnmower with oil and it froze solid. I called around and the sweet guy told me to bring it right in. He could fix it while I waited. He did and cleaned oily mess I made of the mower! The repair came in just under $30.00. I'm not anxious to lift my mower onto the back of my SUV very soon, but when it happens I'll be going back to these guys. read more

I mowed a yard for the first time last week and have no experience with mowers etc. They helped me pick the right mower for me, made sure it was running well, and helped me get it into my truck. Took my Husqvarna string trimmer to Jay's over two months ago for a carb clean and some routine maintenance. Was told they would have it ready in about ten days. A month went by ( I can be patient to a fault ) and still no word, so I called. I was assured they were going to put a rush on it. Fast forward another month, still no word. I call again, still haven't started working on it. I go to pick it up so I can take it somewhere that they will actually fix it and receive a lukewarm apology and the lame excuse of 'we don't work on Huskies anymore'. Really? You could've told me that two months ago. Needless to say, I'm not going back. How does anyone stay in business with this complete and total lack of professionalism? read more

I bought my mower from Jay's 8 years ago for $195 (used), every 2-3 years I bring it back for service and expect to pay about $100 for comprehensive maintenance. It always runs great and starts everytime. This year there was an extra item needed (safety stop cable) and they quoted me $25 extra. Got my mower back with: 4 new wheels, new safety stop cable, new priming pump, and clean as a whistle. Above and beyond! read more

Had my mower there for 3 weeks. Checked on it, they hadn't even gotten to it. They said we'll get right on it. They never called with updates what so ever! I drove by to check. The need to order parts. another week goes by. still no updates. So 5 weeks later I get the mower back... It's still not running right! Got it home (we really needed the mower by now!), after 1/2 the front yard it blew a gasket and oil was all over the top of the mower deck! Back to the shop. Here we are 9 months later and the mower is doing exactly what it was when I first dropped it off! Not to mention they never did fix the self propelled drive! I don't trust them to fix it a 3rd time. Go to a real dealer or shop... yes it might cost a bit more, but It's cost me hours and $$$ that would have far made up for it by now! read more

Second time here and my experience was even better than the first. This time, I had a mystery issue with my lawn mower and had expected to leave it with them for a couple of weeks until someone could get to it. (As for the wait, all three times I've called them about an issue, they've been very upfront about how long it will take based on their existing backlog. I *really* appreciate their candor.). However, when I brought it in, one of Jay's mechanics asked about the issue, checked all the obvious things and then spotted the problem (a spring clip had popped off the governor). Clipped it back on, then adjusted it, then said "that it?". Spent five minutes diagnosing and fixing the problem but didn't want any money. They may be gruff, they may have a huge wait time - but it's quality work done with integrity. read more

I have done business with Jay's for close to 30 years and have never had better service. My machinery (brush cutters and mowers and weed whackers and chain saws and generators and edgers) start like a charm after he has worked on them, run reliably - usually better than new. And because he's good, sometimes the wait is long. I usually get my equipment serviced in the winter before the busy season - although of course that is not always possible. More, he has sometimes talked me through my problem (rewinding a starter, for example) over the phone and sometimes he (or his staff) have done minor repairs or replacements and refused reimbursement. I now live and good 30 minutes from the shop, but my attempts to find service equal to his close by have failed miserably. It's cheaper and faster to go to Jay. read more

RIP OFF!!! DISHONEST BUSINESS!!! Was quoted $40 for repair, after calling for three weeks, they finally started working on it. Suddenly, the price jumped to $115. When I told them I didn't want the work done, they said they charge $28 to take the mower apart (something they didn't say up front), and would not reassemble it. So I'm out $28 and three weeks for no work because they gave me a bad quote. Will NEVER do business with them again. read more

It's a lawnmower and chainsaw service and sales shop. We were referred by friends who had their chainsaw serviced a couple of years ago as we were in the market for a refurbished/used propelled mower for a fairly large yard. Their prices and selection are what you should expect for a shop like this. Actually, the prices are better than I expected. I may have saved as much as $300 by choosing the one that we purchased. And, given that most of the new mowers from retail stores have plastic parts and/or lower duty-cycle engines - it may have been more than that. Their 90 days full refund/trade/service warrant should make most feel comfortable. I recently had a less than fantastic experience with a brand new string trimmer powerhead for my trimmer/edger/tiller attachments. I'm headed to Jay's today to see what they have. I saw a number of professional duty boom trimmers when I was there and if they have what I need - I will buy from them again and again. Also, because this is a repair shop - they do ask you what your going to use it for, how often, etc. to help you select the right machine. Moreover, they know all of the innerworkings of the motor and other assemblies so if you let them, you'll be steered toward the machine that has the right duty cycle for your yard/landscape. read more

Shady and dishonest. Wanted my chainsaw sharpened. When I got it back it did not run properly. The blade and chain then fell off. They also replaced a perfectly good primer bulb and charged me for it WITHOUT permission. Go somewhere else. read more
