The "Burnside Fred Meyer" is worth a good 3 stars for its location alone. Numerous times this Fred Meyer has saved my ass when I was in need of something or other, and that definitely counts for something. On the flip side, this Freddy's location has disappointed me on many an occasion as well. This Fred Meyer location is much smaller than your average FM, and specializes primarily in groceries. While they do have a large book section and a decent housewares offering, many of the items you'd find at your local FM are not available here. For example, I recently cruised in to purchase a canvas folding camp/tailgating chair (I've seen them at every other FM) and they didn't have them at this location (citing space constraints). This is not the only item I've been denied at this FM. Now granted, space in this part of town comes at a premium, and likely the majority of shoppers are in the market for food and minor housewares... I'll give them that. Really, they should call this location a "Fred Meyer Grocery" or something. Besides the nuts and bolts of the shopping experience, of course, this particular FM comes with a bonus entertainment factor. I mean really, what is shopping for a gallon of milk without some crazed hobo outside screaming expletives at the can machines out front, or a schizophrenic local muttering to himself in the canned fruit aisle? This Burnside location breeds chaos and calamity, there's no doubt. 3 stars for the location, no added stars for selection, plus and minus stars at the same time for the freakshow effect. THIS FRED MEYER IS ALWAYS FULL OF HOTTIES minus one star because it's also always full of homeless and old people... which really sucks because it's across the street from my apartment. Fred Meyer, aka my 2nd refrigerator. Living across the street is super convenient, especially when you forgot to get wine/breadcrumbs/shallots/etc for dinner. The selection here is pretty good, though apparently ones in more suburban areas have a ton more stuff - clothes, camping gear, bed linens, etc - I won't take any points away because I'm not expecting that at my grocery store. Prices here are pretty good, though for some stuff its definitely cheaper to go to the Trader Joe's (wine, for example) on Glisan. They have free WiFi, which I used my fair share before I buckled down and got internet at the apartment, and there are some comfortable chairs in the Starbucks area and tables in a food court to work on. The food court, however, is ALWAYS really messy, with trash strewn about all of the tables... you'd think it would be someone's job to keep the area tidy, especially with all the homeless people that come in for a meal. That being said, its a pretty good place to people watch - a large variety of people shop here, so you're always going to be at least a little entertained while shopping. "Freaky Freddy's" is the name my friend Karla bestowed upon this particular location. It frequently lives up to the name. Being the closest actual full service store close to my apartment, I'm a pretty frequent shopper. I sometimes have a more difficult time reviewing places I go to the most. First, it's on Burnside, so expect sketchiness. The bottle return is always busy, and the machines are often out of order. Most times I don't get hassled, others it's a nightmare. On one occasion last summer I had a homeless woman very perturbed with me because I wouldn't remove a bee stinger from her back. Now, I felt super bad for her, but she had open sores all over, so removing a stinger with my bare hands wasn't an option. That's the kind of situation you may encounter. There are also a lot of people that will try to spange you entering & exiting the store. I've been happy with the pharmacy here (see my Walgreen review ). Yes, there can be a line, but I usually try to go on the off hours. They have almost always had my medicine ready on time. They've been courteous, and professional. In particular I like the tall gentleman that shaves his head, he's super friendly, and always remembers my name. I've seen them take loads of crap from people. I wouldn't want their job. The eat in part of the deli is usually messy, but the Starbucks is in good shape most of the time. The deli is well stocked, and the prepared food isn't usually too bad. They have a nice selection in the salad bar, and their hot soup is good. The bakery has a better selection that some of the other Fred Meyer's I've been to, many pretty cakes and pastries for a grocery store. Zupans of course has more, and for higher prices. The overall prices aren't bad, especially when they run specials. They run out of the Sunday coupon circular on a regular basis, but sometimes you can ask customer service. I like most of the staff, and again, they really have to put up with a lot some days. The meat department is good. They have a selection of ready to prepare meals such as stuffed pork shops and marinated chicken. The produce department is small, but usually has what I'm looking for. Off to the side they have a good assortment of cut up vegetables and fruits that are convenient to take with me on trips. The bulk and organic sections are decent for the size of store. There is a good selection of supplements to choose from too. They have a good number of self scans, as well as quick check line for under 10 items. And again, some of the customers are crazy and/or sketchy, but it's the location. What can you do? read more

The deli here sucks, tell me if I'm wrong people.. You know EXACTLY what I mean, felt it yourselves on more than one occasion.. Kind of "I'll get there when I feel like it and you'll like it" kind of attitude.. Lack of service seems to be written in the manual.. Salad bar a bad joke open / closed with the consistency of a blue moon, odd items like pepperoni.. Pepperoni salad anyone? No? Hmm.. Parm, red onions, bacon bits, olives, blue cheese chunks, red peppers, egg, tofu.. these are a few of my favorite things, (and yours too) that just don't show up. Hello, chichi Freddy's. Of course it's got to be a little bit more stylish, seeing that it's awfully close to TrendyThird. Keep in mind, though, this ain't no "One Stop Shopping." Groceries, pharmaceuticals, flowers, and electronics, only. It's always immaculately clean. Everyone who shops here is almost always pretty. And the fact that you have to go up an escalator to get into the store from the parking garage lends an air of urban grocery experience to the location. And seeing that it's smack dab in Northwest Portland, of course this Freddy's gets local bakeries to provide some of their delicious dessertish delicacies. This Fred Meyer just reeks of gourmet. But you can still get popsicles and diet Pepsi! read more

Having had not much experience with American grocery stores (I moved to PDX months ago from the Netherlands), and experiencing almost the entire remodeling of this Freddy's, I vouch that it has greatly improved from the type of grocery store that I presume it was from reading from others' (older) reviews. Personally, I like the changes: 1. Much (enormous!) selection of organic stuff, now comprising 4 double aisles and the huge wall of fresh nuts, dried fruit, different types of beans, an organically-based section of cleaning supplies, plus the dairy section. 2. The Vegetable department is like a dream: über different and fresh veggies, and the organic vegetable section is also great. 3. The flower department has expanded. 4. I like the sushi or Starbucks choices, especially as a small treat when you are doing your weekly grind-down-and-buckle-up grocery shopping. 5. The Deli department has delicious sandwiches and all kinds of fresh meats. 6. The bread department has a much larger (and fresher) selection than before. 7. I like being able to choose between the real, original (more expensive) cheeses or the (sometimes local, sometimes plain) American copycats which are less expensive, and the cool thing about the new Cheese station is that they allow you to taste the cheeses before you buy: how nice is that?! 8. The wine selection is incredibly varied, and I will be busy trying different white wines for the next few years. And I must not forget to mention the beer department: the staff is really helpful and explains whatever you can think of asking. 9. The Meat and Fish stations carry many choices, and when the butcher helped us find an excellent piece of meat. We went home and fixed it like he said and the quality was worth the time to stand there and talk to him about it, plus it cost the same as the meat already wrapped in the cooling. 10. This Freddy's is really huge: you can buy books, Kitchen Aid machines, toys, china, and office supplies. 11. The Timbers/Adidas clothes are additionally a nice tourist attraction, or for diehard fans. 12. And you are not going to believe this--the pharmacist even walked me to the specific aisle to help me pick out the proper over-the-counter medication. It was so nice of him to take the time to show and teach me! In Europe you are lucky if the staff treats you nicely, so for me this is refreshing and the kindness of people is touching when they go that extra mile to help you. Compared to Dutch grocery stores, the entire store selection is un-believable. I took 2 exchange students there, and they flipped about the size and what they were able to purchase. Parking below deck is a breeze, and free. I definitely recommend this place; and if the size intimidates you, maybe it helps if you think of the enormous distance walking in the store as an extra, free work-out! read more

Fred Meyer - The updated and renewed interior with a clothing department - Grocery Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Pro: A large store, with a great selection of groceries, including organic. Seemingly clean, and bustling every time I go. Fred Meyer has a long heritage in the Northwest, and now that it is a part of Kroger, I'm sure it'll have a long and healthy life. This particular location was recently renovated, so it's a nice store these days. Con: From the top down, the managerial culture at Stadium Fred Meyer is shockingly poor. I went in to return some still-fresh, canned food (I have developed new food allergies) and had an awful experience with management. I was told by one of their managers Tammy (assisted by Jason), among other things: 1) I needed my come back with my passport to return the items, since my driver's license was not from a bordering state and I had no receipt (who keeps grocery receipts!?) 2) I was lectured on Oregon driving laws, and was told that I was violating them since I had not updated my Driver's License within 30 days (I had recently moved back to Oregon); a comment which is clearly inappropriate, especially coming from a manager. When I asked to speak to Tammy's boss (a female who's name is now escaping me), all I got was a few hollow, insincere apologies with no explanation or invitation to a better experience. Absolutely no accountability happening here. A shame, especially since I was not aggressive, or rude and I'm a reasonable person. Clearly, there are some return policy changes happening at Fred Meyer. However, as managers of the store they should be crystal clear on the policy and I got varying answers between the managers and 2 employees that I initially spoke to. All in all, I will absolutely not be coming back to the Stadium Fred Meyer, if any Fred Meyer at all. read more

Parking garage is good, main level is for shopping and is nice, but you have to go up to the third level for the bathrooms. There is hardly anyone up on that level, and of course the bathrooms are nasty with toilet paper on the floor, broken fixtures, etc. And to add to the fun, I walk in there with a homeless man having his pocket knife out and I have to turn my back to him to pee (in the only urinal for a store with this capacity). Terrible design to put the bathroom on the top level away from traffic and dangerous especially for children/elderly. You'd think they'd at least have a host watching over the bathrooms. They have a huge underground parking lot. Coming up the escalators reminded me immediately of the Ralphs in Downtown LA which would make sense as Fred Meyer's is owned by Kroger which also owns the Ralphs chain. What I love about this Fred Meyer is what also makes me only give it three stars. There is a Kroger down the street from where I grew up in a strip mall that I started to call "the ghetto plex." This Fred Meyer reminds me of the ghetto plex. I very rarely enter without someone asking me for money and I usually gladly hand over a few coins if I have them. However, once a woman licked my elbow. I'm not sure why, but she just bent over and licked it. Another time I watched the the pharmacy clerk get in a screaming match with an old man. That being said, it is all good for entertainment. On the useful plus side, the prices are reasonable and there is a decent selection of goods. So, I've noticed this happening, for the past few months. Whenever a Hungryman dinner is on sale, it always means that the potatoes are freezer burned, therefore, inedible. I think that's deceptive. Horrible customer service. That's all you need to know. You need something? Don't bother asking.

Frequent Freddie's shoppers will notice the prices are a bit higher, and the selection quite a bit smaller (no clothing, toys, furniture in this one), than the suburbian locations. But it's remarkable that this one has been able to do a successful makeover that keeps it in business in the midst of such prime real estate. The basics are the prices we're used to: $2 gallon of milk and so on. And there are some pluses not in the other stores: A pleasant food court if you want your deli eat-in. A great salad bar, and a good antipasti bar, both of which are still fresh and full toward the end of the night. The pharmacy is hit-and-miss. I'm accustomed to highly automated Costco, and this Fred Meyer is a mess with getting refill requests from doctors. The staff will also often make a promise they don't keep, in my experience. They give you a time -- it's not ready at that time. I've been told "i'll get right on it" and then found out that getting the refill authorization from my MD hadn't seen any action for days. I've had a single smooth prescription transaction with them, and then only because I told the manager how frequently there had been problems lately. Trying to match prices is a nightmare. One person, the first time found Costco's price on her own in their computer system. Afterward, I was told that doing so is impossible; I must call Costco and provide that day's matching price, and I have to redo it every time. Well OK, fine. So I'll ask for a refill and give them the Costco price, being prepared -- then if I pick up the next day because they couldn't fill it right away, they won't accept the price match I'd given before and I have to call again. Customer Service will also only give $5 in quarters per person, per day -- and often not even that if their tills are short. Being in close proximity to many apartment buildings with laundry rooms, I'd think management could come up with a way to give $10 in quarters since $5 often isn't enough to get all the laundry done. But. The Natural Foods section is very good, with helpful staff and frequent sales. The produce has lots of organic options. I've never had a security problem when I bring my own bag in, and yep they give you a nickle off. I shop here almost every day, and rarely "get asked for money." There are Street Roots Newspaper vendors at the door, who politely ask you if you want to buy an issue (and it's a good newspaper -- why not get a copy for a buck?). But between the store and Burnside is indeed an area where more destitute people spend their days. This isn't Fred Meyer's problem; it's a societal one -- grow up and carry some extra quarters in your pocket (or granola bars if you will only give money if you can also inflict your values upon them). There is a huge lot downstairs. They used to have a system where you could pick up your groceries at the curb; I'm not sure whether this is still the case. I try to like this store but the quality of food and service are just terrible. Finally, the last thing that I could buy there, the organic produce has gone downhill in the last six months (during the summer the produce gets worse?). Lettuce that is spoiled, carrots that are HUGE and woody (not fresh and flavorful). I have never been able to eat the fish or meat here, the sourcing is very commodity (very big box retailer with not sustainable, not local sourcing; things like cheap shrimp from Thailand that are en ecological and ethical nightmare). What an out-dated place. While costco or Whole Foods all go mobile app, this old Fred Meyer still requires people to bring their rewards card. The customer service sucks. Look, I know they're doing renovation here, but this Freddy's looks like it's been ransacked by zombie hordes. I went yesterday to get ice cream for an elderly friend who wanted to take advantage of a sale and I really couldn't believe my eyes. The store is dirty, poorly lit, and chaotic. My time on the rickety escalator brought back memories of shopping in Tijuana. And there were some seriously scary people loitering outside. I suppose it would have been a major inconvenience for the customers living nearby if this store had closed for renovation, and I'm guessing Kroger would have lost lots of money, too, but yikes. Right now, this Fred's is a pain to shop at because of the construction. It smells weird and dusty, all the groceries seem to move around on a weekly basis, the aisle markers are often not up (is cereal in this aisle? I don't know!), and the produce section is practically nonexistent. But! They do always have the very specific kind of bread and English muffins that I like, which other Fred's often run out of or have put in places where I can't find them. And they are close to my house. This place is so close to home that I can walk to it. One thing I noticed is that their nail color prices are cheaper than walgreens which is also down the road. I haven't check the prices on anything else. They only give u quarters 5$ at a time. So I have to go back twice the same day sometimes just to get enough quarters to do laundry. Absolute worst pharmacy I've ever been to. Went to pick up my medication that had been ordered STAT by my physician the NIGHT BEFORE and they did not have it ready and did not even know where the paperwork was. After 45 minutes they finally provided me with my medication. Upon taking my medication the next day I noticed that there didn't seem to be many pills in the container. After counting them I discovered I only had HALF of the prescription I was meant to have. When I called the pharmacy I was treated very rudely and told that they would not refill it. This is the biggest and best Fred Meyer I have seen. Multiple levels of shopping pleasure. The only drawback is the public restroom is on the very top floor. On my way to the restroom I discovered they have a cooking demonstration room. A community/ employee meeting room. Outside bistro tables rooftop level. And a sushi dinner where everything goes around a conveyer. Open entry into the store they have a handheld scan and go. Not sure what it is or how it works. Nor am I sure if they have a parking garage but was able to get parking right outside. read more

I first started coming to this location prior to the remodel. It was a vastly different atmosphere then, with tweakers running around, lackluster lighting, and general dinginess. Fred Meyer has invested a lot of money here, and it shows. Pros: - Huge selections of everything from beer, to hot sauce (my two favorite things in the world), to bread, cheeses, and vitamins; LOTS of local staple items - Fantastic ready-to-cook area with pre-made burger patties, kebabs, steaks and more - Beautiful seafood selection, with fresh, wild caught, never-frozen salmon almost always on sale for ~$8/lb - Bar that I will almost definitely never have a beer at, but still cool, haha - Upstairs area to enjoy sandwiches, sushi, etc. -- there's even decent wifi! Fred Meyer is a place that you buy groceries at. It says it in the name. It is a place for all the folk in NW Portland to walk to. One goes through the door. I am told that the place is "small" for a Fred Meyer's. It has groceries, a coffee house, some books, some clothes, and a flower shop. Yet it is expanding because it is "small". It is a grocery store. The vegetables are on the right. The fish area is in the back. The counter person behind the fish/meat section are very helpful. The importance that the Fred Meyer's has is in the location. There are small Mom and Pop grocery stores all over. But one has to go to a large place that isn't a Whole Foods but not a Target "block" store either. It's fine for what it provides. read more

I don't have much to say in regards of reviewing the place. It's a run of the mill grocery store. There's nothing special about it. All grocery stores have some sort of organic selection now, so that doesn't make this FM better than any other... What I DO have to say is how hilarious it is that every reviewer from California has mistaken this location for the Hawthorne location. I just spent the last 20 minutes searching for soy sauce. I don't understand the layout here. There is one aisle with all these dressings and oils and stuff, so I thought hmm, probably down here. Nope, check the next aisle. Nope. Then I go to read the signs. "Dressing, Mayo . . . " on one side "Mexican" on the other side . . . I finally I found somebody to direct me. When my hubby and I moved to Portland I wanted to be able to walk pretty much wherever we needed to go and not rely on cars so much. This Freddy's location certainly helps us out with that. Since we live 1/2 mile from here it's easy to stroll over a couple times a week. When we need a major shopping trip the parking garage and side lot always seem to have spaces available. I am glad the remodel is complete and the front entrance is accessible now too. This is a nicely located city market for our lifestyle. read more

I really do like this store, and do a majority of my shopping here. They have a good bulk section with quite the varieties of granola, grains, nuts, flour, and even bulk spices. Pretty decent meat and poultry section, along with home appliances and household items. It's close to my house, which is a score cause i walk. They pretty much have a little bit of everything you could need, and at a moderate price. My only complaint is their produce. Which is why i gave the 3 stars. In my personal opinion, and maybe i am a produce snob, but their produce sucks. I feel like they get the bad end of the bucket or something. Onions are never ripe, banana's are already going bad. And this section is pretty small. I am just disappointed that i am forced, by my own will, to goto Zupan's or Trader Joe's for produce. Freddie's is one of the the last places to get reasonably priced groceries in the downtown area. It is conveniently located right on Burnside and has a plethora of parking. I like that it is has a pseudo-healthfood area, so you can go shop for your soymilk and organic mac-n-cheese, before hitting up the cleaning aisle and pharmacy, where you can get products of modern science that you won't find at Whole Foods (sometimes I just really need nyquil/windex/toilet paper that isn't made of tree bark, etc). They also have a great seafood selection here, and now and then I will treat myself to some crab legs or a lobster tail when they're on clearance (I know, risky to buy seafood on clearance - but it's always tasted fine and never left me ill). read more

I go to this Freddy's when in Northwest. I find the store difficult to navigate. For instance, why is the Dave's Killer Bread on the totally opposite side of the store from the bakery and all the other bread? Why would you do this? I come here like, erryday. Seriously. And I'm always disappointed that I have to buy organic bananas because those are the only bananas they offer. Sometimes I want to save money and ingest pesticides, okay? I will say that this Fred Meyer is on top of its shit because they never ran out of frozen strawberries when I was on my smoothie kick. I always thought I was going to clear out their frozen strawberries shelf. The store always seems crowded, but maybe that's because I feel like people always get in my way when I'm in a hurry...which is all the time because I hate grocery shopping. I also hate taking the "www.tellkroger.com" survey, but I always do it anyway because I want to be one of those lucky bastards who wins one of twenty $100 gift cards. But the fact that I always enter and I've never won probably indicates that there isn't a real drawing. I shop here because it's the cheap grocery store in my neighborhood. Also, it's close. I just moved to Portland and have been shopping at the Zupans (on Burnside) and at the Trader Joes. I decided to venture off to the Fred Meyer, and boy did I regret it. Maybe I have become a grocery store snob (Zupans in Portland, and Nugget in Sacramento really spoil you), but I just could not do it. Really sketchy, smelled like feces right outside the front entrance, and in complete disarray. Although it is cheaper than Zupans (and it does get bonus points for cheapness) or any other high end grocery store, the trade off is not worth it. You can go to Trader Joes (literally a couple blocks away), or splurge to be treated like a Queen (or King) at Zupans. Also, side note. They have a pretty wide variety of vegetables and fruits. This is my least favorite grocery store in Portland. It can be pretty sketchy, very busy and there are never enough checkers. Another complaint is the way that the store is organized. If you want to buy veggie broth, you will not find it by the chicken broth and beef broth, instead it is on the other end of the store in the 'organics' section. I would recommend going to Trader Joe's instead. Its only a few blocks away, better quality and better shopping experience. read more
