A few years back I brought my wedding band and wedding ring to the store to get them enlarged and cleaned. The results were amazing (kudos to the craft person/jeweler who cleaned/enlarged my rings). The sales people were another story. When I asked the male sales person how much the enlargement and cleaning would cost, he responded, "Not a lot." Really? This was so unprofessional. Unprofessional Act #2: I had to call to find out when my rings would be ready because no one called me. Unprofessional Act #3. When my husband picked up my rings, the sales woman made a remark about how small the rings/my fingers/hands were. I am an Asian-American woman/mother who has been harassed by many White Women/White Men in Upper Montclair, Montclair, Cedar Grove, Verona & West Orange, NJ for years. It saddens/shocks me to admit the level of racism I have experienced in this area. I was shocked that the sales woman remarked about the size of my rings/fingers after we paid $150.00 to get these rings enlarged/cleaned. Replaced batteries on watches and a small jewelry repair. Immaculate service with quick turnaround

I initially brought in 4 watches for the batteries to be replaced. I picked them up the following day and all was fine. The jeweler showed me that one of the watches had a minor problem (the second hand was not spinning although the watch still told good time) He suggested that if we were interested, he could make arrangements to have it checked over at no charge. Very nice! I went back the following week with 4 more watches for battery changes and they had them ready for pick-up the next day! They couldn't be more helpful and polite. I would definitely recommend them to anybody who is in need of watch repair. read more

The people that work here are the sweetest. I came-in because I needed to remove my wedding and engagement bands after a swollen finger debacle. They quickly acted and treated me like a princess. Every one of the staff pitched in to help me. In-fact, the ladies and Tony the jeweler, made me laugh as I was obviously upset about having to cut my rings. They carry a wonderful line of enamels (my favorite) and for years I have been looking for a jeweler to repair one of my vintage pairs of cufflinks. These are the first pair that I ever owned and they are special as that started me on my collection. Not only did Tony fix my links, he cleaned them up while keeping the patina. Plus, he gave me some great advice on caring for my other 100+ pairs. The staff here are warm and inviting. It's nice to see a store that also has a mens section with a nice range from traditional to edgy - at varying price points. Everyone there, especially Karen O'Neill, turned a potentially very stressful situation into a memorable, lovely occasion. It is evident that the store caters to high net worth buyers, but I was pleased to see the attention and service that was afforded to me as searched for a gift under $1000. The gentleman who helped me asked all the right questions and was compassionate so that he understood exactly what I was looking for and recommended a beauitful bracelet in my price range that made for the perfect gift. As I checked out, the staff took time to be friendly and engage me in conversation about all things other than jewelry. My first visit to Frederick Goodman was like a visit to an old friends home. I came in to Frederic Goodman Jewelers looking for an engagement ring and had an absolutely terrific experience! I had been searching for a few weeks and had visited some other retailers and wholesalers and was underwhelmed to say the least, both with price and quality. Even though I am admittedly a novice when it comes to jewelry, it was pretty obvious even to me that their merchandise was of a superior quality. In addition, the staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They walked me through the process of buying a diamond and a setting. They helped me understand what I should be looking for in a diamond (not just cut and carat which is what I received at other establishments), but the grading system and quality ratings. I was able to find a diamond and setting that is not only exactly what I was looking for, but well within my price range. God willing, this will be the only engagement ring I will have to buy, but the next time I need any high-end jewelry, Frederic Goodman will definitely be my first stop. read more

I chose this as my first Yelp review to write what an outstanding experience I had with Frederic Goodman Jewelers. I was referred to them (by a friend who had an excellent experience) to purchase first an engagement ring for my girlfriend and (after she said yes!) wedding bands. For the engagement ring, I had a pretty specific request of a top tier blue sapphire and a french halo. This was absolutely NO problem for the incredible staff. Jeannie was amazing and walked me through the entire process. I even received a personal email from Mr. Goodman ensuring I was getting excellent service and my product was satisfactory. It was above and beyond what we could have ever expected for the price. My wife is constantly getting complements on it. Their payment plan was also extremely flexible and easy. They made it work for me. We then needed wedding bands and the service could not have been better. As we were on a budget due to the wedding, they worked with me and came up with a price that was well within my budget. I can't thank them enough for their first class jewelry and customer service. Brought my watch in for a battery replacement. It would take a week, as explained, because watch needed to be "sent out" for repair. This was not an issue for me because I didn't consider it a high priority, but it does seem like something one would expect to be done on premises. Watch was ready one week later, as promised. However, I was caught off guard when I returned to pick it up and was asked for $53 (including sales tax). When I stated that I was shocked by the fee and didn't expect it to be more than $20 I was told that the service included replacing a gasket to ensure that the watch's water resistance up to depths of 200M would remain in tact. Still, $50+ seems quite outlandish even given this explanation. I honestly believe the parts (battery, gasket) can't intrinsically cost much on their own, nor that the entire time involved to do the job could be more than 15 minutes when performed by someone who does such things for a living. I did look at the order slip and the fee was not written, nor did the representative quote me what it would cost when I dropped the watch off and he wrote-up the order, which was otherwise quite detailed. I'm partly to blame for not asking, but I suspect in retrospect that he was probably happy enough that it wasn't discussed. Like I said, I didn't foresee the cost being more than $20, which seems like a reasonable limit. If this is indeed the going rate for the Montclair area I will find out next time, as I will be sure to get quotes first from a few stores. read more
