When our family wants catfish we go to Fred's. It's been around for decades and it looks it. The waitresses are not there to make you feel special and if you're looking for romantic ambience then Fred's is not for you. But the fish is great. The hush puppies are delicious. There is plenty of seating for your large party. I am always happy with my visits to Fred's. And afterwards the walk to the spring is short and perfect for easing out of that after-dinner fullness. read more

I used to eat there all the time as a child and it was wonderful so I wanted to treat my husband but the reviews kind of scared me. We were tired and it was the only menu in our motel room so we placed a to go order. It was WONDERFUL! The fish was not greasy but firm and flaky and you actually tasted the fish not the batter. The chicken strips were typical strips but hot and fresh. Baked potatoes were kind of small but still wonderful. We also placed an order for 2 pinto beans and that was a mistake bc they come in a huge container that we could hv easily shared but at such a cheap price it wasn't a big deal. The #1 reason I wanted him to eat there was for the hush-puppies and they were beyond delicious. We'll go back again and this time we'll bring the entire family. **IF you have room left, try their Peanut Butter Pie bc it is outta this world!!! I'm still thinking about it. I've been to town several times and finally got to eat at Fred's. Interior was redecorated from an old downtown store. I try to be a healthy eater, so I tried to grilled fish plate. It was the bet grilled fish I have ever had. Started off with hush puppies and pickled tomatoes. I could have made a meal of that but the fish and baked potato were perfect. Cocktail sauce and tarter sauce was ok. Service was excellent (and entertaining). I recommend this place! read more

We stopped here based on past reviews and because we like to support local business when traveling. The service was not good, pleasant or accommodating. We felt like we were intruding. Had to ask each time when we needed something. Never asked if we needed anything else. As with a past poster, french fries were horrible, water needed to be filtered, catfish was OK. Had the lunch special (Monday) which was 4 pieces of fish, cole slaw, fries and hush puppies $8.95 and worth every penny. We love fried fish but normally not anyone but ours so to like the fish is a big compliment. We would eat here again in a heartbeat. Hands down the best fish you can get 50 miles of the Arkansas-Missouri state line. It's just your typical, cramped fish house. Tables have the obligatory advertisements embedded in them, and the service is quick and courteous. I've never felt rushed or snubbed or unpleasant when eating here. The hush puppies are not the best I've ever had, but still very good and go great with the local and fresh catfish made to perfection. It will always be hot, tender, and juicy. One thing to note is there is practically zero cell service in the joint, so don't be surprised when you miss a few texts... but really, you won't have time to check your phone because you'll be too lost in the delicious tastes of Ozark catfish. read more

Bar none, the best place to eat in the greater Thayer/Mammoth Spring area. Nothing says "comfort food" quite like the Thursday Special (which they serve EVERY day, if you ask nicely): four pieces of delicious fried catfish (or chicken strips, if you're not one for fish), two hush puppies, a scoop of their cold and refreshing coleslaw, fries and a crisp pickle spear. If you're still hungry afterward, try a slice of their creamy peanut butter pie. I've been eating at Fred's since before I could walk, and they've never disappointed. The front door reads, "Best catfish and hush puppies in Arkansas," and that's not an idle boast (their coleslaw is pretty incredible, too!). The catfish is excellent. The pickled green tomatoes are just as good as everybody says. I love the hushpuppies. The french fries are pretty lame. Substitute a baked potato with extra sour cream. Also, ask for slices of raw onion to eat along with the catfish. Get there a lttle early for lunch or dinner to avoid the rush. When they're packed, the volume of fish that they have to fry drops the temperature of the oil, and the fish doesn't come out as light and crispy as it should. read more
