Coonyon's Restaurant Review My dad raved about Coonyon's and wanted to take us there for dinner tonight. We settled in and placed our orders -- I had a small cup of gumbo and a small red beans and rice, Dad ordered the gator bites, and my wife and mother both went with the shrimp and cheese grits. Having spent many years traveling through seven different states, including plenty of time in Louisiana and New Orleans, I've had my share of gumbo. To put it kindly, this wasn't one of the better ones. It lacked the dark roux that gives gumbo its signature flavor, had very little liquid, and mostly consisted of chunks of chicken and okra over a pile of rice. The gator bites were probably the best thing I tried -- even though I only tasted one, it was quite good. The red beans and rice were decent, with the highlight being the sausage, though there were only three or four very thin slices. I'd love to find that sausage again! The shrimp and grits I sampled had good, creamy grits, tasty shrimp, and a tomato-based étouffée-style sauce that worked well together. The waitress was prompt, the food arrived hot and on time, and overall it was a decent experience -- but not quite what I'd consider a true Cajun restaurant. read more

Authentic Cajun food. Most restaurants do not know how to make gumbo. This is the real deal. Also you can get etouffe', boudin balls, muffelettas, good fried or blackened catfish, shrimp and grits and other dishes. Also beer and wine. read more

The food was phenomenal. It was like you were in New Orleans. The shrimp and grits are worth it. The service is great too.

We moved from New Orleans to NWA three years ago and could never find really good, authentic Louisiana food...until now! We drove from Springdale to Mountain Home just to try it and we will be back. I have already started passing the work among all of our Louisiana friends up here. Beyond 5 stars!!! We had the gumbo, which was awesome, boudin bites, fabulous, fried oyster poboy (my husband said only thing better is his, lol) and bread pudding. The muffaletta was as good as any I have ever had. It's worth seeking out this unassuming building with a somewhat hard to navigate parking lot for some of the best Cajun food I've tasted! We started with boudin balls and Louisiana brewed beer and enjoyed crayfish etouffe, shrimp with cheesy grits, and shrimp creole. Everything was attractively plated and there was very little left on anyone's plate after we dug in. The seasoning was perfect! Heat was just right! I wish we would have had room for dessert! I went there for my son's birthday dinner the food was not as cajun as we are used to being from Terrebonne Parish Louisiana originally. The red beans were hit and miss some hard some soft, They also use a way to heavy hand on their cajun/ creole food. It doesn't need all the extra that they put . Also the potato salad really grossed me out with sweet pickle relish in there. Went once not sure if will ever go back. read more

We stopped in for lunch right after they opened. We were the second group of customers. It had a simple southern feel and New Orleans style music. We had boudin balls for an appetizer. We also had BBQ shrimp and grits, beans and rice, and shrimp creole over rice. Everything tastes great. Our server was great, and made great suggestions also. Definitely worth the stop, and even a second stop. The food and service were great. read more

I had always wanted to try this place since first coming to this area. I finally came across it one day and stopped for lunch. I came through the door and stood there waiting for somebody to seat me. While standing there I saw to people wearing green camo clothes in the kitchen arguing. All I wanted was a seat so I found my own. I went to the upper area feeling like I was in a house and sat down. The waitress came over and I placed my order for gumbo and some fried okra. I got my order and well, I wasn't pleased with the looks of the gumbo at all. The shrimp were very small and looked like they've been in this gumbo since yesterday or...very overcooked and the gumbo was slimy. I figured maybe they used lots of orka that may have caused that but the most okra I found was in my fried okra order. The flavor was nothing like any gumbo I've had and honestly I was very disappointed. I didn't finish it. I ate some fried okra which tasted like any fried okra I've had at a tavern. Definitely not homemade but edible. I wanted to try the desert so I asked about there cake. It was a lemon blueberry or raspberry. Anyway, I opted out when I was told that it was shipped in Frozen. I was told the story how the 2 owners bumped heads and the owner that was chef/cook left the business and the remaining owner was running it now. This was more than I wanted to know but helped me understand why nothing on the menu is freshly made or authentic Cajun cuisine. I didn't really expect to pay a decent price for what seemed like canned leftovers. I know this is harsh but really, if you cannot cook then hire somebody that can and keep out of the kitchen. All of the rave reviews of the past were when the Chef/Owner was still there. The place was not very clean, I could see supplies by the fountain drinks area. It was quite a mess. The interior didn't scream Cajon or bayou or anything really. I'll say this, I will go back and try this place again for two reasons. First I hope that they brought in a real Chef cook that knows a bit about Cajon/Creole cooking, making everything fresh rather than whatever this was. Second, I gave an extra salt only because I went here after a period of covid shut downs. I really don't think thats an excuse for bad food but I'll give them that benefit of doubt. read more

Favorite catered meeting ever!!!!!! Crawfish étouffé in one pan and gumbo in the other; served up with rice, chips, salsa and guacamole. Can't say enough good things about the flavor and presentation - my only regret was no photos.... Well have to do that again! read more

We had heard so many good things about Cooyon's that we happened upon it one day and decided we had to try it! We were seated promptly. Our waitress was very friendly as well as knowledgeable about menu items. We had shrimp po boys with fries and Boudin Balls as our appetizer. The food was hot and delicious! Service was good so I give it two stars. Good is not Cajun/Creole it has been modified by Northern cooking. I'm from Baton Rouge and just moved to the area and thought I'd try to see if it was legit. Was in the Arkansas boonies on business and found this cajun spot with my NOLA favorites. I had the crawfish pie as an appetizer and they were delicious. For the entree, l ordered blackened catfish with fries and coleslaw. The catfish was seasoned very well and the cajun fries were really good. When in the area, l will definitely eat here again! Also had the pleasure of meeting the owner who was so sweet and made sure everything was enjoyable. My server Sarah was a sweetheart as well. read more

As most Cajun restaurants go this isn't fancy inside or out and the bar is limited but oh the food! Went twice in three days while visiting Mountain Home and really enjoyed the the true Cajun food. The gumbo was excellent. I got a small bowl and a quarter muffuletta sandwich and had plenty to eat. The second night I tried the bbq shrimp and grits. It was excellent. Service is good but sit back, enjoy the music and savor the taste of good food. read more

I read some other reviews about their seafood, and being from Louisiana we had to go try it out ourselves for lunch. Very impressed with the muffuletta, shrimp po-boy, gumbo, & the etoufee! Could not be sure though 'til we tried the Bread Pudding with Bourbon sauce. Oh my! We could not eat supper later that evening & settled for salads. Can't wait to go back here. Really really wanted to like this place. I knew what I was going to have before I ever got there crawfish etouffee it was more like soupy. Wife had chicken strips dinner. Chicken was greasy ,fries okay but corn nuggets where the best part. Daughter had crawfish pies(2) only ate one said okay. Grandson is 6 he had shrimp and fries. We took out the shrimp Po' Boys after a long day. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. The romelade sauce had just enough heat. Even the bread was delicious. It was toasted and incredibly fresh. We were in town visiting family, who suggested lunch at Cooyon's. I got a shrimp burger with fries & my husband got a muffaletta. We were both very happy with the food - it was delicious! The staff were all friendly, but our waiter was awesome, making sure we had what we needed with a genuine smile (that kid was full of personality!).
