My wife and I recently traveled to Norwich to attend a wedding. There are no big hotels in this area so you stay at local inns. Fred's is both a restaurant as well as an inn. You check in for your room at the bar. One thing that hits you right away is the friendliness of the staff. The main thing we wanted was a clean room and that's what we got. There were a couple of issues with water going down the drain slow in the sink and tub, but nothing major. For the 2 nights we were there, it was fine. The wedding was also at Fred's so it was super convenient. The food and the service at the wedding were very good. The staff did a great job of making it a fun time. If you happen to be in this area of upstate NY and you need a clean, safe place to stay, Fred's Inn would be a good choice. read more

First and second time we went there the food was great and the waitress was very kind. The third time we went on a Sunday afternoon and when the food came, the mashed potato tasted so dry, it felt like it was a left over from someone else's plate. I had a feeling the cook was having a bad day, so I'm not sure I'd ever go there on a Sunday afternoon again. Perhaps his shift was ending. I'll give it one more try sometime and if it happens again I'll update my review with the results. Another point is that the place is shabby. The carpets look dirty and decor very outdated and run down. It would be nice to have a brighter and cleaner look. The cutlery was stained, like not washed. The waitress said they don't have a water softener. They should. She gave me another one, but it wasn't too much better. For a restaurant, this should be a priority. The second time we went there, there was a light flickering issue, plus a strong noise like everything would shut down. A customer who just arrived asked if they had a generator, because he was about to order and was kind of worried. They said they don't. Another point here. I will start this as I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. I met a couple friends here for lunch and was pretty happy with it. I will most certainly be back as the food was good and the portions were great. The ambiance was that of a small town bar and grill which suits me just fine. Clean comfortable and food was good. My biggest issue was the music. It was at a point that was a little to load and also no my kind of music. Waiter did great as bartender and waiter. Was right on top of refills on soda and water. So this is a little different than my other reviews since I haven't stayed a night here. I go to Norwich on business two times a year. I was told about this place from someone I trust that has the same taste as I have. Based on her review I decided to drive by and check it out. I walked into the restaurant and found Michele who greeted me with a big smile and welcoming hello. I asked if I could see any open rooms. She grabbed her keys and said come with me. I was shown two rooms that were above and beyond clean. The first room was a double Queen. The new carpet smell gave it away before she had a chance to tell me. It was stocked with a small refrigerator, microwave, and a nice looking desk with plenty of room. The refrigerator is helpful when I can't finish the sandwich from lunch and don't want to toss it out. The bathroom had a lot of counter space with towels that you couldn't get any whiter. The second room was a single King The second was set up exactly like the first but with a comfortable looking couch next to the bed. More room in this room plus a DVD player. I guess you need to request the DVD player because they don't have them in all the room. That's not a big deal because I watch local news anyway. The biggest thing I can say is that your not going to find cleaner rooms in Norwich. Believe me when I say I know. We walked back to the restaurant and entered the bar. I usually stay over Sundays and if I can fit it in a football game I'm happy. The multiple TV's and BIG screen TV is a big bonus! So, needless to say I'm staying here when I come back into town. I will update this review when I stay at Fred's Inn. I have a feeling I'll be able to add more great things about this place after that happens. Side note: I was skeptical with the two reviews before me because the first reviewer didn't have a big enough vocabulary to use something other than the F bomb. From the time we checked in at the bar, we loved Fred's. Staff are friendly and the place is beautiful, in a 1940's retro way, which we love. Dark wood bar with good cocktails and draft selections, in-house restaurant with an excellent weekend buffet (including an amazing array of pastries), and comfortable rooms with a Keurig coffeemaker, microwave, and fridge. Bar and restaurant staff were absolutely wonderful. We would definitely stay here again. So why not five stars? Our room was not made up at all on our second of two nights: bed unmade, trash not emptied, coffee pods/supplies and toiletries not replenished, etc. And it would have been nice if coffee and donuts (or something) had been available in the lobby, since the restaurant is not open for breakfast--but that's a very minor suggestion. I have been there for two Sunday brunches, including Easter. The staff were always very attentive. Chef Steve and waitress Stephanie are both great! We did not visit the bar or hotel, so I cannot comment on that. Both times, the buffet was clean. The hot food was hot, the cold food was cold. The dessert bar was very nice. Everything was clean and inviting, including the bathrooms. I love the historic pictures in the back hall. In the future I plan on visiting the restaurant as well. I would recommend this to others. So if visiting the small town of Norwich, NY lodging options are quite limited. Overall for the price this isn't a bad option I would say its probably a two star place. We have family in the area that we visit and this is where we stay. It's a locally owned business too. The rooms are always clean and there's actually decent cable here and free wifi. We've eaten at the restaurant as well which is quite good too. My husband had the steak and it was cooked perfectly and the meat was tender. I had the cesear salad which was excellent. They definitely give you big portions so come hungry. The menu has a big selection. The decor it's a bit of a throwback so just don't let that deter you. The service in the restaurant has always been excellent too. I'd give Fred's a five star review but the beds in their rooms need to be updated I just don't sleep well on them. Stayed here for 3 nights while visiting family ... had 2 rooms total room 1 - first floor, two queen beds room 2 - second floor, one king bed The rooms are all 'basic' (no Marriot type of service here!), but they serve the purpose and are very large, very large rooms to move around in. The staff in the lobby area were not too friendly, very slow, and were not too accommodating when I requested a first floor room for my elder parents who cant do stairs. After some banter I finally got a first floor room, I actually had to mention ADA regulations (I am fluent in disability law). Did not eat here, just stayed at hotel. read more

Raw Meat. Ordered a dinner for 2 on Valentine's Day, and the total came to just under $75 (with no drinks, dessert, nor tip as this was takeout). The prime rib steak was undercooked 2 degrees of cook (asked for medium and received rare). Thankfully I cut my burger in half first instead of just taking a bite, as it was completely raw meat in the middle with the outsides barely even browned. The white bits of fat in the raw meat were still visible, there was no cook at all to the inside (ordered medium-rare, was obviously raw). We ended up cooking the dinner ourselves at home afterwards, doing what we could with the mess. After finally getting ahold of the manager on duty after a couple calls that night all I wanted was my money back for the burger and steak, which a few days later I stopped by and even took back less than I paid for those two items just to be done with it (the manager and another employee saw my pictures of the 2 meats at that time and agreed with undercooked steak and raw meat instead of a hamburger). I emailed who I believe to be the owner that night (02/14/2021) and have not heard back (I included pictures of the undercooked steak and obviously raw meat). Being very busy is absolutely no excuse to give someone an expensive steak undercooked to their ask, and then to give someone raw meat? And for the exorbitant price this establishment is asking? The two main meat items completely ruined the whole meal, despite how good the other two items ordered initially might have been. I will absolutely not be going back to this location if at all possible, and am obviously not recommending people go there. read more

My husband and I went on a Tuesday and were escorted to the dining area. We were seated in a lovely, quiet corner. My husband ordered the steak, which was done to perfection. I had the brisket with homemade macaroni and cheese. I was delighted not only with the scrumptious food, but with the friendly and top-notch service. The wine that our server recommended was delicious and accompanied our meal perfectly. Although we thought we wouldn't have room for dessert, once our server showed us the appetizing spread, we took a peanut butter cheesecake slice to go. Needless to say, the dessert was decadent and capped off a splendid evening out. The first and ONLY time we're be dining at Fred's Inn. A burger, soup & salad took 45 minutes from order to table. Sara, our server was professional and pleasant and provided us two updates on our order and offered us a complimentary appetizer. The "surf 'n' turf" salad of mixes greens, sirloin tips with lobster was passable except for the "out if a bag" shredded cheddar cheese. The odds it was genuine lobster ate slim. Never did have French onion soup with scallion greens on top. The burger's onions (sauteed or carmelized, NOT ordered) were tough to extricate from the melted cheddar cheese (see above). I wish i could give 3.5 stars as I believe the hotel to be better than three but not quite 4. My husband and I stay here at lease once a year to visit his family and we have always been satisfied. The most important detail, in my opinion, when it comes to a hotel is cleanliness and the rooms have always been clean. Also I find a microwave, coffee maker and refigerator to be a major bonus. When rating a hotel in Norwich you have to realize where you are (not to insult the area) but when you're not in a big city w/o lots of options Fred's Inn is as good as it gets. As far as the restaurant goes, stick with bar food, sandwiches and beer and you shouldn't be disappointed, gourmet chefs they are not but the staff is always very welcoming and you're always greeted with a smile. read more

The restaurant has always been enjoyable, whether going for a sit-down dinner, a light meal in the bar area, or indulging in the breakfast buffet.
