We were looking to have a few semi-flush mounted light fixtures, a ceiling fan and chandelier above the stairs replaced, and an outlet added so that we could move our TV above the fireplace. Scott was very professional and worked quickly. I was both pleased and surprised that he even changed his shoes before coming in the house and swept up after himself. I was also very thankful that he was able to fix an incorrectly installed ceiling fan that could have come down at any time (our baby is obsessed sitting under and watching our ceiling fan when it is on). He is priced fairly, does great work in a timely manner, and cleans up after himself. What more can you ask for? Jim said that he had a reconditioned wood stove that was still under warranty and he could do a full install that would meet all requirements and sell us a mantle for the new stove. We were completely happy with his price, bought the stove, sight unseen, where going to buy a mantle from him. We built a new hearth, had the fireplace cleaned, scheduled his inspection visit and we gave him a 50% deposit on the spot. He scheduled one install day and then had to reschedule. We confirmed the new date and checked in to confirm it again as it got closer (because we are facing November now and had already had one date go bad). He seemed like a nice enough guy when he came for the inspection and we were really excited about the stove. Out of the blue we get a check for a full refund of the stove with no explanation whatsoever. We call/email and ask why and get a message that my partner is a 'details guy' and so Jim doesn't think we'd be a 'good fit.' WHAT?!? If by "details guy" he means - we pay for a service, on time, as requested, and so we like to know that we are going to receive the service as promised - then, yes, he is a 'details guy'. When did this become a bad thing? We didn't hold back payment, we didn't demand to see the stove in person before we bought it, he is the one who replied to our query on CL - and then he rejects our business with a thoroughly questionable excuse? Can't recommend anyone do business with this Great Bear Renewable Energy. Now we are facing November, no wood stove and no chance of getting a good price on one until next summer when the winter season is over. Thanks for nothing.

They recommended a few hot water heaters for us to choose from and explained each and gave us prices. They ordered the heater and it arrived quick. A few days later they arrived exactly when they promised. They were done in a few hours. The original plumber who came out and his coworkers were very friendly. They put our 3 dogs at ease and my 6 year old granddaughter said of one of them "that guy is really good to talk to and I like his voice"! I wish I remembered his name. He also gave my husband a few pointers on another way to remove water from our flooding basement. We now have a plumber we know we can rely on if the need arises again!

Trombly Plumbing when good enough is too much trouble…read more I had them do three things for me, though I should have caught on the first time. First was to run a heat duct up to the second floor. To do this they had to cut a hole in the floor. I agreed, but I asked the duct be installed far enough way from the wall with the window, it was in a corner, so I could box it in and make it look nice. They finished and I was not happy with the results. First, it was not the distance away I requested, I gave measurements. Second, it was at an angle so I had to build a bigger box than should have been necessary. Finally, they had cut a large round hole, abandoned that idea and then cut a larger oval hole than was needed. This is the original flooring from the 19th century. I had to build a base around the bottom of the box to hide the holes in the floor. Second try. I have a pantry that used to be a small 1/2 bath. I had them turn it back into a bathroom. This part of the house doesn't get good heat so I needed a solution to keep the pipes from freezing. Their only solution was shut off valves for when the temperature was too cold. The pipes run under the house in a crawl space. I talked to them about other solutions. They told me this was the only thing that could be done. I went ahead with it. I found out there were several other solutions. After everything was done it looked OK, until. One day I was leaning against the sink and it suddenly let go from the wall. It didn't come out completely, but was now at a slight angle and it is loose, you can give it a little wiggle. I asked them to come fix it. They said it was not anchored into a stud because there weren't any in that area. They never told me. I checked around and there are simple solutions. Finally, I had them fix an emergency. Every time someone used the plumbing the sewage would pour out onto the basement floor. They came out right away. They told me before they could start I would have to have it professionally cleaned. I did. They proceeded to cut the old sewer pipe out only to have sewage splash all over the basement. They did fix the pipe, but I asked them to pay for it to be cleaned. They refused. They said the pipe was blocked and nobody could have known. Well, a plumber would have known that if sewage isn't draining there's probably a clog. Don't use Trombly! You have been warned!

Based on my research I got the bright idea that I could install heated floors. I looked around online for information for quite a while before I settled on Radiantec for having the most clearly understandable information about how radiant loops work, and what to expect of them. I placed my order, and was off to the races. The first thing that you need to understand though is that an installation below the subfloor is the least efficient way to install a heated floor. I learned that the hard way as I had to turn the temperature progressively higher to satisfy the heat load for my building. That is not a criticism of Radiantec, but it is definitely worth noting if you expect to heat your home with 90 degree water. A subfloor installation calls for closer to 140 on the coldest days. David at Radiantec was very helpful in answering my questions, and estimating what materials I needed for the system. Every home is different, but his estimate was nearly spot on. Their shipment also comes with a few repair couplings, because mistakes are inevitable, and their couplings are much more cost effective than a SharkBite alternative. I also appreciated their comparison of the effectiveness of different aluminum plate widths. They seem to have optimized the plate for cost effectiveness, because it definitely gets the job done. When I compared their material prices to competing radiant system distributers, Radiantec was an excellent value. The installation process was hard, tedious work, but so is all construction. I got it done, and was excited to finally activate my system. Let me just say that a radiant system is not terribly expensive if you do the work your self, but it is well worth it to never have to deal with a cold surface in your home again. That first day you wake up, and feel the heat coming off of your mattress is glorious. If you have some time and patience, I highly recommend this for a DIY project.
