The studio was a little tricky to find because it does not have any outward signage, and parking is limited, but, once I was inside, the experience could not have been easier! A Studio Pod employee walked me through how to use the self-service machine and then she made herself scare to allow for my privacy. From my understanding, the Studio Pod on Blossom is the only one in Houston where you have the option to get a quick tutorial from an employee before beginning. The photo taking process was very easy. The photo pod offered several different kinds of lighting and even ran through a posing guide. Once you clicked the photo button, it started a 5 second countdown. Placed in front of you, is a digital screen that allows you to see how the picture will turn out. Not happy with the end result? Studio Pod offers 5 free retakes. I didn't opt for any retouching but this is also an option available for purchase at booking. The whole process took less than 15 min, and I left with a link to the digital files. I got 15 high quality headshots for ~$50 - a steal! Something else that I found noteworthy is that I had to reschedule my appointment because...life! But, Studio Pod allows you to reschedule for free. I checked out Studio713 in the Warehouse District of downtown Houston earlier this week to see what…read moreresources were available. They offer everything from audio and video production, photography, and the use of a cyclorama (675 sq space with lighting). For video production, they use cinema-quality RED® cameras. When entering the studio, there was a plaque on the wall showcasing that Justin Bieber actually recorded his vocals for DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You" at this location. I met with Tyler Casper, the head of Studio713's video department, and nerded out with him in the Cyclorama. Half of it was painted white, and the other half was a bright green for any green screen shots. I personally do similar type of work, so it was actually refreshing to communicate with another professional who actually knows what he's talking about. When it comes to art and production, it's best to work with people who are passionate and educated about what they are doing. I really liked my experience at Studio713. Whenever I need some extra help on a project whether I need audio or video production, photography, or even studio space, I know exactly where to go. I came to SugarHill Recording Studios with bosslady Andrea R to meet with fellow yelper and SHRS extraordinaire, Gina M. Unbeknown to us, there was a recording session going on in one of the studios for Stan Keeton. We were later approached to take part in the session. Alas, my big break. So there we were, standing with cups, keys, spoons and other nifty noisemakers giving off sounds of holiday cheer. After about three takes, we finally nailed it. Back to SugarHill and what it's all about. SugarHill isn't just a recording studio. With more than 65 years in the bizz, Houston's historical music scene is what it is because of SugarHill. Names like Lightnin' Hopkins, The Rolling Stones, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Selena, Janis Joplin, Jermaine Duprie, Destiny's Child, Clay Walker, Southern Backtones and countless others have recorded here. The studio facilitates two recording studios, an amazingly talented staff of engineers, vintage equipment, a tape vault and other highlights to help create your perfect album. What many don't know is that SugarHill is open for anyone to rent out, and that can cost as little as $70 an hour. I like to consider myself as someone who knows a lot about the city, but I am shamed to say that I had no idea that SugarHill was right in Houston's backyard. Glad I *finally* caught on. A side note for everyone, Friday November 28, 2pm, SugarHill Recording Sessions will air on 90.1 KPFT (or on stream at kpft.org). The monthly broadcasted Sessions will introduce independent artists to the city by featuring unique talent straight from the studio. Tune in!

So I came here the other day to record my new album.... Bet…read moreya didn't know I was a singer, did you? OK, I'm NOT...the only singing I do is in the shower, but I think the peeps at SugarHill could even make me sound good! So the real reason Miss Farrah A and I were here was to hang with fellow yelper, Gina M. Gina is a lucky gal because she works for SugarHill! She gave us a fun tour of the place that has recorded hits for many artists including Destiny's Child, Lyle Lovett, etc. We met lots of engineers and other people who work here and they all greeted us with a big smile. I'd be smiling lots too if I got to listen to cool music all day long! While Beyonce wasn't at SugarHill the day we were there (darn- must have been elsewhere with her boy Jay-Z) there was a very nice older gentleman recording a xmas song. Farrah and I both commented that it sounded like a country xmas song. Only in Texas- right? It turned out that the country xmas singer needed some background noise for his song so he asked Farrah, Gina, I, and a few others to chit chat in the background and pretend we were at a holiday party. I may not be able to sing, but I can chit chat and party until I'm blue in the face so this was the perfect job for me! Unfortunately, I wasn't as talented as I thought and we had to do this over 3 times, but now i feel very experienced in fake party talk. So a few weeks from now you'll be able to buy my first song (stay tuned for the name of the singer!), recorded by SugarHill....just listen for that chit chat in the back!! PS: Received word from SugarHill that the man behind my new hit is....Stan Keeton!

I do some voiceover work now and then, and can admit that the older I get, the worse my voice sounds. I went in yesterday open and honest about how my voice has become more nasal in recent years. I had the good fortune of working with Caleb, who helped me break down the transcript in to workable segments, and coached me through each take to make it sound clean and clear. After the transcript was recorded he went to work cleaning up the audio. By the time he was done I couldn't even hear myself breathe. The entire team is a class act, from the time I walked through the door until the time I walked out. If you need a professional recording service at a very affordable rate, then look no further...this is your place!

Everyone I've spoken with is professional. You get what you pay for here and sometimes a bit more. I've had some sessions where we were finishing up a few things that ran over time some and my engineer just went ahead and finished. They also account for a lunch break during the session that you aren't charged for. I've only worked with David as my engineer because I've gotten a cool vibe with working with him. I've only been to 2 studios in Houston but I would most definitely recommend this one.
