Dr. Willms is a great Dentist. She's thorough and knowledgeable and always take her time to explain details of your dental concerns. I recently met her new DentAl Hygienist; Anna and she was very good. She made me feel at ease and comfortable and prepare me for my upcoming implant procedures. We were tolerant of Free State Dental when they made a series of billing errors and claimed they couldn't verify coverage for my husband. I gave them the identical information they received the first time and they somehow cleared it up on their end. However, this morning when I arrived in the waiting room, it was packed to capacity, much like an airport gate terminal. It's cold and flu season and the dentist leaves us all susceptible to direct exposure potential for COVID. As many folks just returned from their thanksgiving travel destinations, Free State did little to mitigate potential health hazards by staggering patients. In my exam room, the overhead examination light wasn't properly covered to prevent germ ingress and spread, which is nothing new sadly. When I checked out up front in the waiting room (unusual to check out here) I told Ashley King (always a dark cloud on a sunny day with a less than positive attitude) the Clinic Manager that my entire family and extended family goes to Free State Dental and I am concerned about the lack of precautions taken (we won't be back), she bluntly informed me that it was a busy morning and she's, "not the owners" so she can't do anything about it. Pssst! Let me let you in on a secret. I am afraid of the dentist. I know- hard to believe , right?, that such a simple procedure could send me into hours of worry and panic. But it all started when I had my first cavity at age 4 . . .well you don't need to know all of those details, but what you do need to know about is the BEST dental experience I have ever had was at Free State Dental. Dr. Newkirk and her team made, what I thought was going to be a bad experience, into something I haven't stopped talking about so if you are in Lawrence Kansas and need a dentist- you should look no further than Free State Dental. I was on the road and cracked a crown. Being new to the area, I didn't know where to turn so I looked to Yelp to see what might be open on a Saturday that could squeeze me in. Not only did they squeeze me in, but because they have the latest technology and an in house lab- there was none of the waiting to get a new crown. I came in at 9:30, had the old crown taken off and within 2 hours was out and about with my new crown in place. Very easy! If drilling bothers you (and it does me) they have headphones so you can listen to your music to take your mind off of it. And even the anesthesia didn't bother me as it was administered with care. And how thoughtful was it that within the week, Dr. Newkirk personally called me to see how I was doing? What dentist or other healthcare professional does that in this crazy age of faceless medical care? I was blown away by the care I received here and you will be too. I'm sad to be leaving the Lawrence area as if I were here, I would make this my go to dentist. . . . hmmm . . . .now that I think about it- it is only a 2 hour flight from where I am moving. Perhaps I should stick with this group and know, given this great team, that my dental anxiety would cease to exist. It's worth the price of a plane ticket for a little peace of mind. Go. You have a choice of dental providers. Why not use one that cares about their patients and gives you the best and most current dental care available. You'll be happy you did. I had a bad experience with a previous dentist in Lawrence and was crossing my fingers that Free State would be different, and it was! First of all the staff at the front desk are very welcoming and friendly. The woman who cleaned my teeth and did my x-rays, Sarah, was very nice, gentle and also produced less mess when cleaning my teeth than any other place I've been! My doctor, Dr. Adams, was very nice and knowledgeable and even answered my questions on Invisalign. There were no problems with my Delta Dental insurance and I walked out with a great experience. Free State Dental is super professional and thorough. They really have all the technology down with reminding one of appointments and tracking all info. Everyone is friendly and super professional. The place is extremely clean. All the systems are in place to keep everyone safe. Their expertise with dental care is above and beyond. I have seen Dr. Newkirk and Dr. Adams. I was having tooth pain and they worked me in super fast. It turned out I needed a root canal and they referred me to an excellent Endodontist. Erica is my hygienist who is my all time favorite. I have seen her for many many years. Followed her from a dentist I used to see in Topeka. The office even has complimentary lip balm and mini hand sanitizers in the lobby for you to help your self. Getting to the office is the only tricky thing. You have to pay attention to turn off of 6th st onto Eldridge St to catch your turn for their driveway. It's the first left once you turn onto Eldridge. You enter the building from the rear parking lot. Go here! You will be happy you did. read more

For whatever reason, I have a fear of Dentists. I used to avoid dental visits until the pain required me to visit a dentist. Then after getting work done, I would avoid dental visits until absolutely necessary. I used to then go to whomever could get me in. Things changed for me a few years ago. I was lucky that FreeState Dental saw me. Since then I now feel comfortable enough to not only get any required dental work done- I do what they call preventative maintenance.
