My air conditioner was old had a leak in it, and the technician recommended i replace at this time. I was given a very reasonable proposal, and decided to go with the installation. The air conditioner was able to be put in the next day and the technicians were quick ,neat, and explained everything i need to know about my new air conditioner. They also threw in a Maintenance plan which includes a Furnace tuneup in the Fall , and a Air conditioning tuneup for the next summer. Highly incompetent this time around. They set up an appointment with me for 2-5pm to service my unit. The guy called me at 9am to tell me that he will be there within an hour... Cool... 10am is totally 2-5pm. Then they call me to tell me that they circled the block, and can't find parking, while there is an open spot literally in front of my building that I can see. They proceeded to tell me that it's my problem that they couldn't find parking. I talked to their manager who was perfectly pleased with the fact that sometimes they just can't service places. I had an unfortunate experience with Freedom Heating and Cooling. I understand that some customers have had good experiences, but mine was a very bad experience similar to the "cracked heat exchanger scam" you can Google and read about online. 1. I responded to a Facebook ad promoting the $39 A/C cleaning schedule. I asked that they also complete a seasonal furnace check. 2. The service technician that arrived was not wearing a work shirt and did not have an ID or name badge. That was extremely unprofessional. The only thing identifying him with the company was the work van he was driving. The service technician proceeded to clean the A/C unit and then completed the furnace check. 4. After the service technician completed the A/C and furnace check, he came upstairs and explained that I had a cracked heat exchanger. He NEVER called me to the unit to show me the crack he identified in real time. I was checking on him periodically and not once did he call me over to have me see what he saw on his camera. 5. He proceeded to state I must turn off my furnace and not use it in the winter because we would be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. 6. I was very alarmed and upset. He then put together an estimate for a $12,000 replacement of my AC and furnace, and left. 7. I was very upset and after he left, I asked him to text me a picture of the crack. The picture he sent had no metadata, which made me suspicious as to when the picture was actually taken. 8. I also NEVER signed the receipt for services. The service technician forged my signature. After contacting the office to request a receipt, I noticed my forged signature. 9. If you read this far, here's the key statement to pay attention to. The receipt said "Clean and checked furnace per maintenance checklist.,. Cycled system in heat mode at thermostat. ALL OPERATING WELL AT THIS TIME [emphasis mine]." There was NO MENTION OF A CRACKED HEAT EXCHANGER IN THE RECEIPT AT ALL. 10. I notified a manager at Freedom and described the technician who did not wear a work shirt, did not call me over to show me the cracked heat exchanger, forged my signature and provided an invoice that said the furnace was "OPERATING WELL AT THIS TIME". The manager showed up, was apologetic, and proceeded to wand around in the furnace with his camera and said he found a "crack." It was a line, but he did NOT confirm it was an actual crack, and what he found was NOT identical to the image shared by the first technician. He did NOT remove the blower, physically peer into the furnace, and complete any verification to confirm whether the line he found was an actual crack in the system. 11. Upset, I hired a second company to get a second opinion. They opened the furnace, REMOVED THE BLOWER, physically laid down and peered into the system, and used their camera to find any evidence of a cracked exchanger. They identified lines in the grille of the heat exchanger, but not a CRACK with a visible opening/gap as indicated by the Freedom technician. It is also important to note that the technician who found the crack initially refused to come back to demonstrate where he found the crack, because "the job order was closed." 12. Based on the assessment of the second company, the heat exchanger was NOT cracked. They performed a more in-depth assessment versus the slipshod service of Freedom Heating and Cooling. Given that the company sent a technician without a work shirt or badge, who forged my signature, wrote an invoice that said the furnace and its functions were "ALL OPERATING WELL AT THIS TIME," refused to come back to verify the crack, sent a picture with no metadata, what gives you any confidence that this is a reputable company? And we all have to ask ourselves, why would a company charge $39 for service if not to scare some customers into buying a new AC and furnace for $12,000? Finally, after the manager left my house, he FAILED to provide an updated invoice describing the condition of the furnace. I HAD TO REQUEST A NEW INVOICE from him - otherwise, the manager just told me it was cracked verbally without documenting it in writing. I need to replace my furnace and air conditioner, I have used Freedom for over six years to do the yearly tuneups on each. I asked them for a quote, I was able to get one that day. I got several other quotes for a Lennix furnace and air conditioner. They were comparable. Plus since I set it up for the next week I was able to get a discount. I ended up having both pieces plus the hot water heater replaced in one day! They showed up on time, they were very careful, no damage to anything in my house or outside! Tried to figure out why our thermostat wouldn't turn on the air conditioning. We tried googling the issue but still couldn't solve it. We called one company that quoted us $120 just to come out, then called Freedom who came out for only $69. The service guy Nick found a bad fuse on our circuit board. He pulled one out of his pocket and replaced it. Then he turned on the a/c and offered us a cleaning because it was very dirty (don't remember the last time that was done) .. he charged us an additional $49 which still came out cheaper than the other guys. I just had a baby and recently bought a new house. We had no problems with our a/c until the weekend. I found Freedom and checked out their reviews, so decided I would give them a shot. The office explained the service charge fee ($89) plus any additional repairs. I had no problem with that and scheduled for later in the afternoon. The technician (Nick) arrived on time, he found the problem in about 20 minutes. He recommended a quick fix, price was about $250. I accepted the repair and my system is working fine now. We used freedom before. No problems came in cleaned a sensor. Second time the tech came for a different unit totally miss led my sister told her she needed a new unit. I told her she didn't need a new unit. Called another tech who got the unit up and running by replacing the pressure switch and the igniter. Earned a customer for life. We used to use a different local company but they got bought out by a larger corporation and haven't been as good. An acquaintance mentioned Freedom a while back, so when our pilot light went out on our boiler (or so we thought) I gave them a call when we couldn't figure it out ourselves. My husband had tested positive for COVID a few days before, so they understandably couldn't send out a technician to come to our house. Instead they talked my husband through it over the phone (while I was at work). Turns out it was something else, and the issue was resolved just in time for another cold week in April. Let me start by pointing out the (over sixty?!) Yelp-filtered not-recommended reviews for this company. These appear to me (and I presume Yelp) to show a pattern of reviews posted to try to bolster their business and hide the negative reviews. If true, you'd think their time and energy might be better spent focusing on improving customer satisfaction. I had a terrible experience with Freedom. When I called to schedule the appointment, they told me that they charge $69 for the diagnostic, and $69/hr for labor if needed. When they wrote up the bill for the now ($250!) diagnostic, they charged me an extra half hour over the time they were actually here--billing me for 90 minutes! Not to mention that they charged me a much higher hourly rate than promised. I have since called another company (All Temp) who was apparently much more experienced, a single employee diagnosed the problem, showed me clearly what the problem was, and was in and out in less than ten minutes, charging me only $90 for the entire visit and providing a $200 lower estimate for the repairs. The employees during their long stay, asked me for service manuals and spent an inordinate amount of time standing around and sitting in their truck, presumably waiting to talk to someone who understood our HVAC system. When I addressed the overstated time with them, they assured me they were really there for 90 minutes. My thermostat override was set exactly when they entered the house and displayed the exact time elapsed. When I told them this, they still argued that they had been at our house 30 minutes longer! I then also showed them that the caller ID from their telephone call corroborated this timing. When I asked for the manager to call me back to discuss how the $1,600 additional estimate was arrived at, he refused to call me back or come to the phone to discuss, despite my three phone calls. read more

Called for service on a 14 1/2 year old furnace from the number left on installation because the furnace was making loud popping noises. Turns out Freedom took over the phone number, not the business. First visit on 1/30/15 they noted my furnace was dirty from recent renovations in the house. The techs recommended a "clean and check" (69.00) in addition to a new igniter (195.00) and blower cap (105.00). After researching parts cost, these are both grossly overpriced. This was all on top of the 69.00 service call. Their notes indicated that the furnace is in "good working order". Five weeks later, on 3/7/15, the furnace was making even louder popping noises so I called for them to check on it. This tech, who seemed to be far more skilled, immediately had concerns and inspected it with a camera to check it out. He found a hole in the heat exchanger and informed me it was unsafe to use, shutting down the furnace because I needed a new one. Had the first techs caught this I most likely would've purchased a furnace then. Due to the discrepancy between techs/visits, I decided to go without heat for a couple of days and contacted a family friend who runs a heating business. He found a 2 inch hole in the tubing of the heat exchanger that should have been discovered on the first visit as it didn't corrode to those dimensions in only 5 weeks! Wondering what the "clean and check" fee was for it wasn't thorough?? Attempts to remedy this with the owner were unsuccessful. I will not use this company and all of my family and friends now know to avoid it at all costs. I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau as well. read more

They answered my phone call on a Sunday evening, WOW, and Pete the gentleman who picked up the phone came to my house the very next day. I have been struggling with my air conditioner for quite some time though it works it cannot get the house cool. Pete and I walk around the house and he listened as I explained the issue. Pete then explained what the problem could potentially be. He took his time and explained everything. He even recommended what I could do myself to save some money. If I could give this company less than 1 star I would. Firstly they charged $85 just to come out. My heater had stopped blowing out air. It would click and cycle but no air would move. The tech came and putz with the wires and one of them sparked. The heater proceeded to blow air. Instead of saying 'That's your problem right there' he suggested that the circuit board and the inductor needed to be replaced. Neither of those parts were the ones that sparked. He quotes us almost $975 worth of work on a 5 year old furnace. The circuit board had been replaced 3 years ago due to a flood. The tech also charged us another $110 for the hour he spent poking at the wires. I went online the wire that sparked costs less $130. I'm never calling this company again. It's reprehensible that this company tries to scam people into paying for repairs that aren't necessary. read more

Our air conditioning unit started making a loud noise so I called Freedom Heating & Cooling to take a look. We have used them for the past 3 years to perform annual check-ups. The technician that they sent insisted that our air conditioning unit was about to "explode" because a dog had been peeing on it. Aside from this assertion not making any sense, it is not possible given we have a fenced in yard and disabled dog that can't go down the back steps. He refused to repair the air conditioning unit and also said he would not replace it unless we also replaced our furnace (which has been functioning fine) for $8,000! I got a second opinion and the air conditioner was repaired with a $2 capacitor plus the service call. Whether our experience was the result of systemic unethical business practice at Freedom or just an incompetent technician, we will never use these people again. read more

We set up an appointment using a $49 service and diagnosis deal. The morning of the appointment we got a call from Nick at 7:45, asking if they could change our time to their first appointment instead of the afternoon. We agreed and changed our morning around to accommodate the change. Since they said they were about to leave from Franklin Park, we figured it would take at most an hour for them to go 14 miles. We finally called at about 10:00 to be told they were delayed by a train, and they finally got to our house around 10:30, about an hour and a half late. Nick came to the door without a mask. When I asked if he had one, he told me they only put them on when they go inside, and they would only be working outside, which we don't have a problem with. The problem is that he knocked on the door several times and since he was maskless (We weren't.), we were very uncomfortable opening the door when he was closer than six feet from us. It seems like it would be common sense to put on a mask when you are closer than six feet from the customer, regardless of company policy. He finally put his mask on when he came into the house to have us sign the invoice. They began by spraying water from our hose into the AC condenser and then telling us several times how filthy it was. Could it have had some debris in it? Of course, but we had hosed it down in the spring. Nick even told us how filthy our other condenser was, which is unlikely because it is only a few months old. In discussing our filthy AC unit, Nick said they charge $69 for the cleaning, which we didn't authorize and which consisted of about five minutes of spraying with our hose. I told him I was surprised to see that this was considered to be a cleaning because when we had AC cleaning before, the technician had taken the unit apart. He said that was a deep cleaning. We really felt he was focused on upselling us on cleaning more than trying to figure out the problem. The worst part was the recommendation for service. Nick told us that we needed refrigerant for $89 a pound (significantly more than other companies we have called), but they couldn't tell us how much until they filled it and weighed the tank to see how much was used. We questioned this since he said it could be up to four pounds, which would be $366, and were perplexed about why they couldn't tell us how much was needed since they seemed to have a gage attached to the unit. At that point Pete told us it was too cold to fill the refrigerant. It was 55 degrees, and it needed to be 65 degrees or higher. Then we were even more confused. How would they know how much refrigerant was actually going in? This is particularly concerning because overfilling the refrigerant can harm the AC unit. What's more, why would they even schedule the appointment when it was too cold to properly assess or address the problem? We contacted another HVAC company after this and were told they would not even come out unless the temperature was 70 degrees. He agreed that the unit did need cleaning even after Mike and Pete had "cleaned" it and then he helped us troubleshoot how it could have gotten so dirty since we had cleaned it in the spring. He asked if our landscape contractor bags the grass clippings to which we said no.We all concluded that that could be the reason.Since the temperature was higher, he was able to measure that the amount of refrigerant needed was one pound. He also told us that the reason the refrigerant leaked was likely because the valve expands and contracts with temperature changes (and not because the unit needed cleaning), and it's fairly common for the refrigerant to need to be charged after about seven years. And they wore masks the whole time, inside and outside. In the end we paid the $49 for the service call, despite the fact that we really didn't feel like we got a true assessment of the problem or a real solution since they were unable to measure the refrigerant level, but we were not charged the $69 for the five minute hose cleaning. It was pretty much a waste of time and money. They did have time to put a Freedom Heating and Cooling sticker on the other AC unit that they did not service or install, which fortunately we were able to remove. We never understand why companies think it is okay to do that. The customer doesn't get anything out of the free advertising, and it is really akin to property defacement. read more

Called Freedom when, without knowledge nor authorisation, my dumb**s roommate changed out the thermostat! He had no clue but the A/C worked until Fall, and go figure- no heat. Found Freedom online because I prefer pride-in service from local Mom and Pop's. Scheduled Willie for the next day, he was prompt and courteous, and installed the missing jumper. Couple weeks later I notice the A/C fan running just as I was about to cover that for the winter. This with the heater on! Called Freedom who dispatched Tech Little Pete who came in few hours. Little Pete spent nearly an hour and a half and fixed the issue. Freedom charges $69 to come out, plus $109/hour. I requested a price break considering they were just out two weeks prior, and when Little Pete said no charge I just wanted to hug him. Nicest techs ever, prompt service, they stand behind their work; highly recommended. read more

Punctual, cleaned up after themselves, cleaned out my a/c coil while they were in there, and installed new furnace which is humming along. Freedom previously installed a new air conditioner a couple summers ago and I've been very pleased with their work. No hard sells or game playing with prices. Straight forward and do good work. My A/C broke and Freedom was able to get someone out within 2 days, even during what's likely to be one of their busiest times. Willy was able to diagnose the issue was with our motor and tracked down the nearest replacement part. Pete came out the very next day with the part to install it and get our A/C up and running before the temperature was expected to rise into the mid-90s a few days later. Our unit is 18 years old and Freedom gave me a great flat rate to replace the system in addition to deducting all repair costs from our total. Came across this company because I drive past there shop everyday. My parents called me up and told me there heater wasn't working, and I told them to try and call this company. They sent a technician out during the night. My parents said he was very friendly, and polite. He showed my dad that the ignighter was cracked, he went and got a new one off his truck, and showed my dad how he can fix a new one in the future. Total bill came out to $165. Good annual Furnace service. Willy came over this morning. He called 30 - 45 minutes before he came over. He explained what he was going to do during the service. The entire process took around 35 minutes. He was very pleasant and cordial. Willy informed me that my unit was around 18 years and that I should look into getting it serviced each year and also consider getting a quote for a new furnace in a few years. My suscpicions were confirmed - Freedom's quote came in at a fraction of the cost. Even better was the fact that Pete was willing to take the time to explain things to me over the phone.
