Late in the day on New Year's day I discovered that my furnace was not working. I called the company that had serviced the furnace in the past and left a message of my problem. As back up I checked Yelp.com for repair recommendations and found that Vent Heating and Cooling had favorable reviews so I called them and also left a message. A short time later Jim, the owner of Vent H&C, called me back which was impressive given it was New Year's day. I described my problem and he proceeded to take me through some things to check and from that Jim provided a tentative diagnosis of the source of the problem and promised to be out the following morning to follow-up. The following morning Jim and son were out to the house as promised and did a more thorough inspection of the furnace and quickly diagnosed that the plenum was leaking and that the furnace had to be replaced. Given that my wife and I had plane flight plans very early the next morning this was not good news at all. But we worked out a plan and agreed to a proposal with fair pricing to replace the furnace and also the A/C compressor and coil as it was nearly 30 years old. With help from our good friends and neighbors who coordinated with Jim and his installer to gain entry to our home the furnace was replaced the next day and we didn't miss our plane flights. Jim's knowledge, troubleshooting skills, honesty and fairness got us through a difficult situation with minimal disruption to our travel plans. My wife and I are homeowners with just the basic knowledge of what we know. I never really wanted to know everything. When you attempt to think you can do it yourself. I have had this company service my furnace and air conditioner for years. They are a small, family owned and operated business, local to me. All things I like when looking to hire. Jim and his people have always been honest, professional, reasonable, prompt, careful, friendly and I trust them completely. Before Vent, I tried a few other companies. They seemed to always find something that needed more attention, and more money. By contrast, I have an air conditioner that is quite noisy. At least 5 years ago, I was told, by Vent, that it probably wouldn't last much longer. But since it still seemed to cool OK, they just cleaned it. It is still going. Now, they could have told me it had to go. But their honesty bought me another 5 years or so without that major expense. That would never have happened with any other company. Jim came to our house for a furnace inspection and then came back to replace a draft inducer assembly. For both trips, Jim committed to a time, worked around my schedule, and arrived on time. When my schedule changed, he was flexible enough to work me in. On top of that, he called me to ensure we would arrive at the house at the same time. While here, he was very informative and helped me understand my furnaces and how/why things were failing. Knowing my basement furnace was under warranty, he asked me to check with the installer to make sure he did not do work that could interfere with the installer's warranty versus doing the work to get paid that could nullify the warranty. Jim is an all around nice and genuine guy who made me feel comfortable fixing my furnace. Our furnace went out in the evening of an extremely cold night and we couldn't wait for a daytime appointment for it to be repaired because we have 2 young kids. Jim walked my husband through the fix over the phone (as a courtesy) but my husband felt more comfortable having it looked at in person just in case there was more to the issue. Made a call in the morning for an appointment later that day for a furnace that inconsistently shutting off. Jim and his son were there later that day. They found that the flame senor was not up sensing the flame. (Furnace is 28 years old.) They simply cleaned the sensor. They also found other wires where that had the insulation burned off. They replace the wires. The furnace was up and running with no parts replaced and a $130. Jim's done several jobs for me in the past including installing another furnace 18 years old.
