I have been on this boat 2 times and both times I take care of the deckhand employees. So the date of the fishing was 8/30-31 that's an overnight fishing we were promised to go tunner bank to catch a bluefin tuna or tuna over all I don't know why at night the capitan decided to change the route and stayed on San Clemente island lol well I didn't pay $250+$20 for diesel lol that 20$ it doesn't say anywhere that we have to pay. I'm not being cheap or nickel or dime anyone but I have paid 250 for the fishing trip already. I can pay $65 go on new Del Mar and catch better fishing and so much more cheaper. lol I paid 250+20 to go catch 2 bonitas and 1 whitefish and it's not like I'm not a bad fisherman or don't have the gear. It was a bad day I get it well how come u guys didn't cancel the trip u people knew that it's going to be bad. U guys lied to us said amigo or other boats didn't go to tunner bank well u people lied yes they did. Its should be fair if fishing trip was canceled end give us the money back. I must say they have a very pleasant crew, very helpful and passionate about their work. This review is in the area of business ethics. As we all know when we book a fishing charter we are chartering for an hourly, professional service. That being said if you are paying for an hourly service and that endeavor leaves late, typically the service provider then adjust the schedule and you come back set amount of hours late to make sure that the customer is getting what they paid for. Yes we left several hours late and we're not adjusted for. That being said I completely understand it is scheduling but that's where the schedule is their problem and not the fault of the clientele. Boats can leave late, just not early. the fact of the matter is that we also were looking at a favorable price on a two day trip being only $579. why it was only $579 because it had hidden fees . What was not included was the $40 fuel charge. The fuel charge which was absolutely unnecessary due to the fact that we even go out 100 miles we only went 40 miles out maybe 50 at max. Not only that but we anchored up to an offshore anchor for over 12 hours of that trip when everybody on that trip paid to be fishing for that time. I understand the bait was doesn't mean you can't go night fish, dropping jigs somewhere else and spend the gas that you charged the entire boat for. Making money on gas is ugly. Then we come the issue of the boat not having an anchor on board. If you're making money handover fist on people for a few hundred bucks a day per person you can afford to go pick up a new anchor on facebook marketplace before your next trip. So essentially due to these parameters set by ultimately the decisions...... I am looking at my two day fishing trip as not bad for an overnight. Did I mention fish cleaning? Not everyone that goes on these boats is really well off financially. Some people can only do this once a year and when things are less than optimal that sucks because that was they're one vacation that they saved up for that got treated like just another day because it's just another day in the eyes of a stranger. The can't afford to get their fish cleaned ask for them to be guild and gutted so that they can do the work when they get home. I was charged the same price to get my fish guild and gutted as if I would've had them . Explain this to me like I'm five because I don't understand. I refrain from taking pictures of some of the atrocities that I brought home in my gunny sack, but over half a dozen looked like a seal had gutted them, literally. Not all of my fish....it was obviously one Deck hand making everybody else's work look bad. That's all it takes. I don't name names on location. The boat is a great boat with bones runs nice but definitely ready to catch up with some communication as far as the bunkhouse and the galley to alert that are sick or weary. Once again, I like the people they're wonderful to be around they're helpful they're kind and they are working hard. Unfortunately these oversights are not small things and as they are young in business they will find out that these are key elements . I hope this is taken well and learned from and not simply scorned upon as an insult because it is not meant as one. I truly hope they can better their operation and the next time I hear about them is raving results. If there's ever a need to reach out, I am absolutely available for that conversation. The Freedom was, by far, the worst fishing charter I've ever been on! Unfortunately, the biggest issue wasn't the fishing, it was the captain's attitude and the overall lack of professionalism. The captain was extremely rude and seemed to have no customer service skills. Throughout the trip, he repeatedly complained about being tired of fishing and talked about how good he was, yet the boat didn't even have enough bait for the trip. My group drove several hours and paid hundreds of dollars each to fish for yellowtail on an overnight trip. By around 9:30 a.m., the captain announced that we were out of bait and that we'd be switching to rockfishing. We didn't travel all that way or pay for an overnight trip just to spend most of the day rockfishing. When customers expressed their frustration, the captain said that some boats had canceled their trips because they didn't have bait. If that's true, then that's exactly what should have happened here. Instead, the trip went out anyway, everyone paid full price plus a $20 fuel surcharge, and we weren't told about the bait shortage until less than halfway through the trip. The problems didn't stop there. For the first several hours, the crew was nowhere to be found because they were asleep. We had to gaff our own fish because there was no crew available to help. There was also no coffee or breakfast available early in the morning because the cook was asleep, and when customers asked for food, he complained instead of helping. To make matters worse, several passengers questioned the accuracy of their galley tabs and felt they had been overcharged. Overall, this trip was extremely disappointing. Between the lack of preparation, poor customer service, and unprofessional crew, I would not recommend fishing on the Freedom. There are plenty of other charter boats that value their customers and provide a much better experience. Avoid this boat at all cost! read more

I have to give these guys 5 stars. They worked tirelessly to try and make sure everyone on the boat caught fish, even when the fish were not cooperating. We caught limits on the trip so enough said, everyone went home with a bunch of Bluefin. Saw one of the comments below say they didn't handle the fish properly, but I saw the exact opposite. As soon as the fish was landed the crew spiked, gilled, gutted, bled, and put in the refrigerated hold. The fish was sashimi grade when we ate it. Steve the cook on the boat was just pure entertainment, hyping everyone up one the boat, roasting folks, and making sure all were having fun. Burgers, burritos, sandwiches on all these boats are usually excellent no matter what boat. Steve however got down and prepared perfectly cooked green beans, rice, Kalbi beef, and a nice salad for dinner. I was skeptical but compliments to the chef don't judge a book by its cover. Trevor the captain ran a tight ship, no complaints there, excellent communication to the fishermen on where the fish were moving, and where they should position their bait/jigs. It's an overnight boat so don't be a sissy Lala and expect a luxury bed, be prepared with a pillow, blanket, earplugs, and people walking through the bunk cabins, you're there to fish not sleep. Do your homework on how to fish offshore before you go, and prepare with the correct gear. They will get you on the fish, but it will be up to you to land the fish. read more

I've been on this boat a few times so this is my personal experience. Let's start with the Pro's: The crew is very friendly as well as knowledgeable & willing to share. The unique baitwell is great with limited loss. As for finding the fish, captain seemed to be active and always on the lookout. The CON's: When fly lining there will always be tangles; however, this crew is very quick to cut the lines. In short, I lost a very expensive Jig because a crew member didn't want to take the time to untangle. Note, another fisherman told me it happened to him too. On my last trip, the crew fillet the fish (for a reasonable price) however it was 3 to 4 hours before our arrival to port whereas it was left on the deck in plastic bags sparely wetted with a water hose. Sadly, when eating the fish the next day we got very sick. read more

The Freedom Sportfishing Boat owners have gotten very greedy as the fishing from last year kept getting better. The Freedom kept increasing there prices like the rest of the boats did. But this year they have gone too far with their quest of the almighty buck. They have almost doubled their load limit size. They are definitely a cattle boat now. Last year the average load was 24- 28 fisherman and that was tight quarters. This year the load limit is 45. Really 45? For the price they are charging and the increased load limit, one can go to San Diego with the same format and actually be in warmer waters. I still can't believe what they have done. Packem in like sardines. I guess they think we are a captive audience with no sense of consumer value. A fool and his money are soon parted. read more

I have fished on the Freedom for 3 yrs now and can only say great things about the boat and crew..you can call directly to Freedom office and ask questions not the landing but Toms wife what other open party boats can you do that with ? Tom gives a safety speech and outline for the next day after we get bait. It's a fun boat to be on its nice to see the same core crew each year. I love the boat. I have gone for 7 years now. I am usually chartermaster for my company trip, which means we do drink quite a bit. I take approximately 30 -40 people each year and a couple years had to go twice. My contractors that roll with me all rave about the trip. Like any experience it is what you make of it, but Capt Tom and Sal make sure everyone is getting help (if you are a newby like me) and plenty knowledgable. I just went on opening weekend (extended overnight) and like aways loved it. Weather sucked freezing cold but i caught my bag full . it was my nephews (from Georgia) first trip and now he is hooked. Looking for my next open weekend so i can get some personal days in before my company trip. Great Trip, great crew, great times. I read that one bad review.. dont get it.. I have seen the manifest posted and the jackpot posted each time. I have one the jackpot before and it was straight up. I can speak for anyone but myself and I can say i have not experienced or witnessed anything like that. read more

After refurbishing the boat during most of 2019 it's back in action. New motors generator new galley it looks beautiful. I just got back from a day and a half trip and had an amazing time. Both captains are awesome helpful informative witty and funny. Blaine the deckhand and his fellow deckhand are awesome very helpful very friendly. The cook is one hard-working man and he makes great food! They have an updated fish hold the chills your fish perfectly. Chartered the Freedom May 19th. I have chartered several different boats for my company over the past 7 years and we haven't found one that we want to call home. We've had good boats and good crews, but nothing like we experienced on the Freedom May 19th. This boat has by far the best crew and customer service we have ever experienced on the water. From Darlen who sets up the trips, to Tom the Captain, Steve the Cook, Peanut and Joe the Deckhands, and Stevie, the riverboat gambler, this boat exudes customer service. We felt as if we were the most important charter they ever had and that we were the most important boat on the water. As it turned out, with Captain Tom and his knowledge, we boated 7 White Sea Bass and could have caught more, but we had a bunch of guys just learning how to fish. Peanut, Joe, Steve, and Stevie couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. The Freedom is a very clean and roomy 85' of fishing platform. Her extra wide passageways on the port and starboard sides are extremely comfortable. The bunkroom smells fresh, the berthing is clean and comfortable, suitable for males and females, privacy curtains, and warm fresh fleece blankets. She has 3 heads and a large, well stocked galley that serves good food. We've finally found a boat to call home. My guys want to charter the Freedom from now on. They've experienced the rest, now they had a chance to experience the best. We can't wait to book her again and go out with Darlen and Tom and the entire Freedom crew. Booked a trip on the Freedom Sportfishing boat out of 22nd St. Landing San Pedro. This was one of cleanest nicer boats I have been on. We baited up with Anchovies, SARDINES and LIVE SQUID, WOW. I thought to myself we are now fully loaded gotta catch some fish now. We fished near San Clemente Island, When we got into the thick of things with the Tuna, all hands were on deck from Captain Jeff to Martin the cook the crew were everywhere! The crew were outstanding in resolving tangles to coordinating our fishing efforts. After some bad experiences earlier this year, I was happy to have been on a boat that was doing everything right! Fishing is not all about catching fish, unpredictable at times. What you can count on with the Freedom is that Tommy and the crew will work hard on putting you in a position to catch fish and helping everyone from the novice fisherman to the experienced angler. The boat is fast and the sound of the twin John Deer diesels sound mean like a race car. The food is great! what more do you want when your hungry is a greasy delicious burger and a cold beer. Went out on an overnight tuna fishing trip yesterday with my brother and had an amazing time. The captain worked really hard to find the fish and the deckhands couldn't be more friendly, helpful, and experienced. Total fish count at the end of the day was over 100 yellowfin and bluefin tuna. Ironically, my brother and I were the only fishermen on the boat that did not bring in a fish. When the crew found out, they gave us a bluefin and a yellowfin to take home so we were not left empty-handed. Nothing but good things to say about this operation. Kudos to all involved with the Freedom. I'll definitely be back!! read more

Went out on the Freedom and, overall, it was a nice day. The boat was very clean and well maintained. Every one of the crew was welcoming and friendy. My husband has sleep apnea so he sleeps with a CPAP and the captain made sure we had a place to plug in. The bunks were very comfy and the food was yummy. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be going out on the Freedom again any time soon. Being a novice, I felt kind of out of place on the boat...even moreso when an older gentleman told me to "get out of his way". The captain tried to give me some pointers, but I just felt like I was taking up too much of his time. I think I'll stick to the half day boats and the smaller fish. The new owners have done a good job renovating the boat. The galley and heads are clean and modern and the bunks were given a fresh coat of paint, new carpet and linens. The captain did his best job to get us on the fish, but the fish did just not want to bite. The boat had tons of school size yellowfin boiling around the boat, but no biters... My only complaint is if you advertise a limited load of 30, stick to it. 32 is not 30. read more

I have been fishing SD Long Range for years and I will tell you first hand you definitely get what you pay for. The Freedom under new owner operator Jeff Jessop has been remodeled inside to perfection. From the RSW Long Range style fish holds that keep your catch primo condition to the zip lock packaged fillets for your catch, this boat is a cut above the rest. Every trip you get new fresh pillow cases, new fresh blankets, sanitized bunk pads on both sides and a professional friendly crew that is eager to help even the most novice anglers. I prefer NOT to sleep in a bunk that is filthy with my face on somebody's drool from the trip or multiple trips before mine. Compared to the other LA/OC boats who offer trips at a slightly less rate the Freedom doesn't even compare for what it is you get out of a trip to the Islands or Offshore. Just went to Freedom overnight trip, really disappoint to me. Deckhand treated me like I was an idiot never fishing before, kept bothering me while I was fighting the fish. The young guy kept yelling at me and told me what to do what to do while I was fishing, I should just told him to shut up. I've caught hundreds of big yellows in my life and really don't understand why would he acted to me like that. When I was in a good spot fighting the big fish ( the fish already under my control) and he told me to walk around the boat, I was like what the hell the fish was not moving around why would you told me to walk around the boat? And I ended up losing a big yellow around 30lb(probably jackpot) because he was yelling at me and told me to follow him, and I followed (I was an idiot should just ignore him) and caused the massive tangle of the line. While the line were tangled , we could actually saw the fish, its already on the surface. Any experienced fisherman would just gaffed it first, but I don't know why they used their " Hand " to hold my line and pulling the fish. And of course the big fish ran away in front of me..... REALLY bad experience from freedom this time and I probably will not go there again for a long time.... really miss the old crew.... read more

Weekend overnight trip on the Freedom. Lets start with the boat. This is one of the cleanest fishing boats I've ever been on. The crew was in constant cleaning mode and it showed. Everything, from the heads to the galley, the decks to the bunk rooms were clean and comfortable. The deckhands looked a little tired (I had heard that they had done several trips non-stop) but they were pretty helpful and did what they were supposed to. The cook (Sean) made up a good breakfast and some tasty burgers. He was pretty sociable and also helped out on the decks when he had a break in the galley. The captain (Tino) is a hardnose, hardcore fisherman. Not the most sociable guy but the kind of captain you want looking for fish for you. He found a lot of fish for us, unfortunately, the tuna didn't want to bite that day. Pretty depressing when hundreds of tuna are swimming under and around the boat, and they won't take anything your throwing at them. All in all it was a good trip. I would recommend this boat and crew to fish with out of San Pedro. I'll definitely be back out on the Freedom. read more

Honestly if I could put 0 stars I would! Absolutely worst trip of my entire life, the captain refused to fish any spot for more than 5 minutes. The man working the galley was rude, and very unsanitary. He was lounging around with no shoes with his feet up on the table that I was eating from. He was illtempered and seemed irritated when I wanted to order. Out of and entire day and a half trip, only 1 person got a bite... OUT OF 35 ANGLERS! One passenger caught one bluefin tuna and one yellowtail. The captain woke us up around 3am to get ready to fish and told us, "we will be stopping in a few minutes, get baited up." IT WASNT FOR AN ADDITIONAL 4 HOURS that a line even touched the water. He refused to let us troll, and would not stop to fish. Overall a terrible experience! I was charged over $200 just for Rod rentals, and didn't use the rods once, and was lied to about the pound test line in the rental rods. The deckhands were honestly pretty helpful, with tying knotts and giving advice and help with tangles and such. But other than that I 100% feel I was scammed and will be seeking a full refund! read more
