Catching feisty barracuda & toad calico bass! For over 30 years, "Sport fishing with Dan Hernandez" has been airing weekly on TV, teaching viewers how to catch & cook fish. Dan is a fishing expert with over 50 years of experience fishing the California & Mexican coast. He also founded the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation over 18 years ago, in an effort to promote & spread the joy & love of fishing to the next generation. Besides TV taping fishing charters, he also provides private charters on his 31' Tiara Express boat, the "Mi Sueno". Specializing in 1/2 & 3/4 day charters, the trips target local reefs, structure & Catalina Island. Occupancy is limited to just 4 anglers (3 minimum needed), and all bait, tackle & fishing equipment are provided. Anglers just need to bring their fishing license, food/drink, proper layering of clothing, camera & a good attitude. Normally, Dan offers a 50% discount on open party trips in the spring. Not having fished for many years, and the shutdown making me stir crazy, I secured my spot on a trip & was eager to hook into fish. We started the day fishing by the Catalina Sea Ranch mussel farm. The target was yellowtail, the most sought after gamefish in SoCal. My goal this year is to catch my first ever yellowtail, but alas, they weren't biting. Dan then brought us to Izor's Reef. On my first cast with a lively sardine, I instantly hooked a well beyond legal barracuda. From there, it was wide open on calico bass. They were so thick, the bass would congregate by the boat. Just drop a baited hook, and it would be fish on. I even managed to land a big, toad calico bass. It had some shoulders on her, and I had a blast landing it. During our trip, swells were around 4-5 feet. I almost got seasick, which quickly dissipated once I starting catching fish. Dan Hernandez also offers bay, harbor & Catalina Island cruises, for those looking something other than fishing. Parking is adjacent to Shoreline Village, in which Dan will provide a parking pass for the day. Service from Dan & his deckhand, Richard, was exceptional. I'm hooked on fishing, again! Dan put us on the fish & we muscled them on in. I was fortunate to land the biggest barracuda & calico bass of the trip. I don't even know where to start. I've been watching Dan since I was 6 years old so, admittedly, this was a fan boy experience. I booked a trip out of Avalon (Catalina) for my Dad's 75th bday. 3 generations of Sportfishing with Dan Hernandez fans on the boat and it was an awesome experience. From the get go Richard, Dan's deckhand, was super welcoming. Dan didn't miss an opportunity to make us feel comfortable and at home on his vessel. He was very professional. We had a chance to fish the backside of the Island and immediately hit on some sculpin. The water was still a bit cold but that didn't put a damper on the experience. Dan and Richard are very knowledgeable fisherman. They didn't overstep their boundaries and made sure we were all comfortable letting them bait and cast the lines for us. Throughout the trip Dan offered tips for fishing and even worked with my son to show him the ropes. We worked our way back to Avalon Bay and did some fishing there as well. The entire time Dan shared stories and gave us tips for fishing. I highly recommend taking a trip out on the water with Dan. No matter your expertise you will have a great time. This last trip we decided to take our youngest son who is 5 . Dan and Richard were so patient with him and helped him every step of the way . I like to spend birthdays with grandbabies making memories instead of buying cheap toys. So for my grandson's birthday we were supposed to do a camping/fishing trip. Then COVID19 hit and canceled our plans. I was skeptical on doing an open party trip with lots of people during this crisis. But I found I could do a private charter with Dan Hernandez Fishing Adventures once the lockdown was lifted and was pleasantly surprised at how well this trip went. This is a perfect fishing trip for just a small group (4 people max) so I took my son and his wife along. EVERYTHING is provided. You just need to bring your fishing license, sunscreen and food and beverages. He provides all bait, rods and reels, and knowledge of where best places are to fish. His deck hand, Richard, was very helpful and friendly. And we actually learned a lot of fishing tips from Dan. The boat itself is nice and comfortable with plenty of room to move around for the amount of people onboard. The grandson caught lots of fish and even has his own story of the big one that got away. My wife and I booked a lobster trip with Dan. Had a great time. The captain put us on some fishes while waiting on the lobster to take the bait in the traps. Caught a nice keeper size sculpin but was out of season and a halibut. It was a grind but we did ended the night with some nice Lobster. If you want to get 1/2 the fishing trip you pay for then you should try going out with Dan Hernandez on the Chief. I paid the premium to take a trip with Dan's group on the Chief last summer. It was SUPPOSED TO BE A DAY AND A HALF TRIPp. We left dock Sunday night expecting an all night ride out to the big tuna fishing grounds and a full day of fishing the next day. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! I AM WARNING YOU. DON'T BE SURPRISED IF THIS HAPPENS. We went to pick up bait and the skipper says he can't get enough bait to fish a full day. What could we do? We already left the dock. We were stuck. We went to our bunks. In the morning we discovered the captain had only gone a few miles north of the dock to fish for barracuda and yellowtail. We eventually got out a ways in the ocean and some people got a few tuna, yellowtail and dorado. However, THE BAIT ON THE CHIEF RAN OUT AROUND 1:OO PM! This was a day and a half trip! That means fishing a full day. We had to head home 1/2 way through the day. At around 5:00 pm we were standing on the dock when we should have been out fishing. It was very suspiscious to me that Dan and his film crew got back to the dock in time to make it home for dinner. The rest of us who were expecting a full day of fishing GOT HALF OF WHAT WE PAID FOR. I emailed Dan. This is what he said: " Yes I understand it was a different trip, but as always where we go fishing is up to the skipper, not me. We did catch a bunch of fish that trip and I feel the skipper made the right moves. Bait was a problem on all trips we had last year, that was because of all the long range boats fishing in local waters. If you read my blogs you'll see a posted a blog about this bait problem, I'm guessing it's going to be the same this year too." The problem with his answer is that other boats HAD PLENTY OF BAIT and WENT WAY OUT and LOADED UP ON TUNA. CAVEAT EMPTOR read more
