My 7 year old has been begging to go fishing, and this seemed like an easy first experience for him and his older brother. Pros: - Catching fish is a sure thing here. The fish are plentiful and hungry. - They had plenty of chairs, buckets, nets, etc. - The rented rods were pre-hooked and weighted (though some were missing hooks, so check before you grab one). Cons: - We arrived about 10 minutes after they were supposed to open but the gates were still closed and there was already a short line of people waiting. Thankfully we only had to wait another 5 minutes before they opened. - The fish are SO easy to catch that we had 4 in about 10-15 minutes (though one broke the line and got away). At $12 per pound, the cost was over $125 including our entrance, 2 rod rentals, bait, and the 3 fish we took home. That was about what we expected in terms of price - but it was a long 1 hour drive for 10-15 minutes of action. - The biggest disappointment was that the website said we could have our fish cleaned and fileted there - but once we arrived they said it wasn't available this weekend (a sign indicated it also wasn't available last weekend). I had tried calling the day prior to verify everything, but all they have is a recorded message. We have neither the tools nor knowledge to clean the fish ourselves - so now we are figuring that out. That had been one of the biggest reasons we chose this "easy" experience. All in all, I'm still glad that we went and that my son caught his first fish - but just be aware what you might be in for and plan accordingly. read more

I had a wonderful first time experience here over the weekend. Arrived on a Sunday around noon and noticed there were very little people fishing. Checked in by paying the entrance and rentals fees and was given quick directions on how to start fishing. My son ended up caching 2 fish relatively quickly. There was a gentleman sitting next to the pond who helps release the hooks from the fish if you do not wish to do so yourself. He had to rehook our rod a few times and did so with friendliness. Whenever I had a question, they were always helpful. Even had the guys filet our fish for us for an extra charge. My son had fun and also enjoyed watching the RC car tracks that are immediately next door when we got done. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice experience with your kids. I wanted to write this review just so i can make people aware of how horribly i was spoken to by a man that works there (not sure if it was owner or management). I didn't get his name. Im a spark driver and i had a drop off there to one of the customers. Pulling up i did see a designated area where it says "drop off/rideshare". So as i pull up, there is this young man at the booth and I'm telling him I'm a spark driver, i need to drop off. I then see the customer and we were both unsure on how to proceed, does he have to drive his car out of the property, or do i go in to where his car is at? which was like no longer than like 20ft away. The young man at the booth didn't make it clear, so i just thought like ok ill just drive up to the customers car and transfer the groceries, the area was empty. Not like i was interrupting anyone or anything in the way. Now that i think of it, the young man was unsure to tell me yes, enter, or no he needs to drive out. Anyways, i was able to give customer his groceries and drive off. Then, i noticed that my trip wasn't completed because i needed to scan an item and get a pass code from the customer, so at that point i begin to panic, this is like my 3rd drop off using the app. I'm new to it. So i call the customer letting him know, i need to scan something, then he tells me like hey i have a passcode. Ect. It still didn't work for me. So he was like what do we do. I'm like idk, i think i need to scan something. I need to go back. There was another way to take care of this that wasn't problematic, but at that time, i was just in panic mode so i was like I'm going back. I encounter the young man again at the booth and I'm telling him, i need to meet with the customer again, can i go in, and he was like well unsure. He could've told me "this is private property, I'm not allowed to let you in, the customer needed to come out, because i will get in trouble" but no, he uses the "idk response with the blank stare" as all young workers now a days do. There's no proper communication. Anyways, i enter again, then the customer tells me, I'm a ways down, can you come this way cuz i already unloaded the car. I'm like sure, so there i go, driving a ways down. Not thinking this would harm anyone or anything. Literally 3 minutes later, i see a truck zooming over to where I'm at, and some man gets off yelling at me "get off the property, this is private property, what do you think you're doing" so aggressively. At that point, the customer begins to panic, his family is right there, i begin to panic trying to scan what i can. While this man is going off on me, telling me" why did i not listen, i have no permission". He continues to tell me "get out of here". I wanted to respond to badly but i knew the customer was scared already and i was scared thinking this man is going to strike me.i felt if i was a man, this would have been handled it in a different way but since I'm a woman, he took full advantage to aggressively yell at me like i was nothing. That is why I'm sitting here at 5am in the morning writing this review because of how badly i was yelled and how horribly i feel. I felt so awful for the customer and the experience he had using this app. There is no excuse to be talked to the way i was. I left feeling scared and humiliated. What a cute hidden gem! We had a blast with our first fishing experience. It's a little pricey but totally worth it for the experience. No catch and release so remember that every fish you catch is $12/pound on top of the entrance. We got a small trout and it was 1.8lbs. They clean and fillet the fish for you if you want. We paid around $50 total for the 3 of us with fishing pole rental and our 1 fish. It was such a fun experience! Highly recommend! If you want an easy way to do fishing the the kids. We went on a sunday and from 11 to 2ish the fish weren't biting (I think only 2 people caught anything). However in the last 30 minutes, my son caught 2 trout totalling 2.5 pounds. He was super happy and we had baked trout for dinner. What to bring: basically just money. If you want to save a bit, get a $20 fishing rod for $20 off of amazon (3 to 5 feet fresh water also called spincast or panfish rod). The pond will give you bait, a hook if you need it, a bucket and nets to catch and hold the fish. There is also shade and a lot of community chairs. If you want "better", bring your own chair with a shade. read more

Took my whole family on a rainy Saturday and pretty much had the place to ourselves. My boys 11 n 8 were reeling in the rainbow trout faster than I could bait the hooks. My mom even caught her first fish. We caught 8 fish that added up to 12 pounds. The fine fellows at the pond cleaned and filleted the fish, and we had an amazing dinner. It was perfect!! Pro tip: bring pliers to pull the hook out. A rag or glove is helpful too. They set us up with rods hooks bait net and hungry fish. $7 per person to fish. $12 per rod including bait. $12/pound for fish. Worth every penny!!! read more

OK let me make one thing very clear first. I am by no means, or have I ever wanted to be a fisherman. Everybody seems to rant and rave about fishing, and when I say everyone, for the most part, I'm strictly speaking about men. This little huckleberry pond is actually pretty cool. They have a small fishing lake just for small kids which I can get down with. I love that idea. They also have RC car racing which is pretty cool! They've got some rad looking birds. Also tackle shop with snacks. Today I am here for the snacks. It's more expensive than I was expecting, it cost about $40 ahead per adult to go, but who knows let's see what the turnout is. Actually glad I found this place. Tried taking my kids to the lake and didn't catch anything. This allows them to actually experience the catch. Based off our observations and what staff told us, it's best to go Friday's right when they open at 9am. They stock the pond on Thursday and it gets crowded on the weekend. PRO's: easy to find, nice staff, and everything you need. The older Hispanic man helping around the pond was extremely helpful. Price to rent a pole is $5, worms are $2, and be sure to buy an orange cloth for $1 to hold the fish. The pliers, bucket, and net are free to use. Fish bite quick. CON's: Biggest con is the $10 per pound, even if you don't eat the fish because they don't allow catch and release. Most of the fish are catfish 2-4 pounds each. Wish they had smaller fish or allowed release. Sucks fish bite so quick but each fish will cost you like $20-40 so not worth staying there too long. I spent $150 for 2 rods, bait, and 4 fish. HELPFUL TIP: we saw a lot of first timers and single parents with no knowledge. When you rent the pole ask for a cloth, plier, and be sure to get a bucket and net. Put the worm on the hook and stab it a few times. Once you catch a fish, put it in the net and then use the cloth to grab it out. Use the pliers to pull the hook out and then throw into the bucket filled halfway with water. Go right when they open, it gets busy and the line to weigh the fish and have them filleted can take 30+min easy. They have bathrooms there and drinks for sale too. read more

Didn't know this place existed! I wanted to take my niece and nephew here for their first time fishing.. and they really enjoyed it. We got there early to beat the crowd and heat but there were already a lot of people there and it became more and more crowded. On site there are peacocks roaming, a mining area, a shop with snacks, and a bathroom. It's a small pond - unfortunately had a good amount of trash floating in it wile we were there. For a small fee you get a fishing pole and small container with worms, there are fishing nets available all around to use as well. Above the pond there is a net ( I'm guessing so birds can prey on the fish), so no overhead casting or else your hook and line will get stuck - as did ours a few times. Staff there was very friendly & helpful - after you catch your fish they will clean it and even filet it for you and put it on ice. Staff mentioned in the warmer months the pond is filled with catfish and on cooler months they fill it with trout. This is NOT a catch and release spot so what you catch you do have to pay for what you catch which is pricey at $10/lb. This was a good place for the kids to try it out and see if they liked it .. and since it is so small they had a higher chance of catching something. read more

Gone fishin`!!! I hadn't been fishing since I was a kid, so to try my luck at catching a fish, we decided to visit "Huckleberry Pond" as a fun, unique, & safe outing. Admittedly, I was hesitant to visit due to the mixed Yelp reviews (some describing debris or trash in the pond), but (although a bit muddy), fortunately we didn't see any trash nor debris when we visited. Although it is not the fanciest nor most picturesque place to fish, it's probably worth a visit if you want to try a quick, fun, first-time fishing experience without leaving Orange County. Upon arrival, the park-like area has a few picnic tables for relaxing & watching the resident geese, peacocks, & giant tortoise. There is also an area ("Huckleberry Mining Company") to pan for gemstones, minerals, & "fossils". The fishing pond, itself, is a small pond that welcomes kids, & kids-at-heart as well. If it is your first time fishing as an adult (like me) & you have no license nor equipment, you are in luck: No license nor equipment is needed at "Huckleberry Pond," & it's as easy-as-pie to start your fishing adventure. Simply go to the "Huck's Shack" area, pay the entrance fee ($7/per person including bait), & they can provide the rods, hooks, & line for rent ($10/per person). The pond is typically stocked with catfish &/or trout depending on the season, & they are nice-sized fish. The volunteers are helpful & patient with teaching you how to put on bait, cast, & reel in, & any fish caught cost $12/pound. Once you're done fishing, the helpful staff will even clean & fillet the fish & put them on ice for no extra charge...just be sure to kindly include a generous gratuity to show your appreciation for their work. We were able to catch a few nice-sized fish & were in-&-out in less than two (2) hours! Warning: If you are immunocompromised & need to avoid mingling in crowds (especially during these times), it's best to visit when it's less busy. If you come during peak times, you will be met with "the crazy crowd" & your experience may not be as pleasant. Fortunately, our visits have mostly been during off-peak times, so we were able to enjoy a peaceful, quiet outing as I learn to fish & had good luck. Overall, it is a nice mini-adventure for the day, & we enjoyed our freshly caught fish for dinner. When I become more comfortable with fishing, I may be ready to hop on a boat & fish with the "big kids." Stay tuned... Very disappointed in this place, my expectations were different.I took my son because they teach you how to fish, so in that sense it was nice for them to show my son. The water is dirty floating plastic. The biggest disappointment is that they have mostly low quality fish. They have mostly bottom feeder fish . Huge Catfish! It's 12.00 a pound!!!!!!! So I don't recommend. Not very good fish, once you catch you keep, so beware, because that is how they make their money. Beware my grand total was 130 dollars and I only spent 30m there. Huckleberry Pond is a fine relaxing spot to go fishing. When we went, we stayed for about an hour, didn't get a bite nor catch anything in neither the pond nor the alternate basin tank pool. That's perfectly okay 'tho, so no disappointment nor complaints. We didn't see anyone else catch any fish either during our stay, 'tho heard someone catch something. I feel, the business is set up for patrons to catch something. The admission fee is so little, they don't make much of anything worthwhile off attendance. I notice they have a "No Catch and Release" policy and you have to pay by the pound for whatever you catch, I think around $8-10/lb if I recall. So, it's in the best interest of the business to stock the ponds with plenty of fish and big ones too. You figure if an avg small fish is 3 lbs, that's $25-30 in revenue per fish they get. So, if they played their cards right and kept hungry fish biting the bait to get caught by patrons, they could easily average $50 per person who come to fish. With that being said, it's a fun experience, I think primarily for kids. The wonderment and mystery of fishing, not knowing if or what is going to be caught is an adventure and stimulates the imagination. I do think they need to put more fish, but also feel there's probably a lot of fish, but none are hungry because people over-bait their hooks, don't know how to fish and the fish may be smart to just nibble and not get hooked, so have no impulsive aggression to ravenously take the bait and get caught. It's not a bad place at all for families to take kids, but if you're looking to fish as an adult or want to catch fresh fish to eat, it could be rather expensive in what you spend time-wise and money per pound on top of not knowing what you're getting as far as fish breed/type or size. You might be better off going to the market for fish to eat at that point. Parking was easy. The pole rental and bait was free with our admission, and we only paid for our son to attend, one pole, and were able to accompany him. read more

Yelp says they're open Fridays, Sat and Sun. I took a Friday off work to take my 3 y/o son fishing for his very first time with his grandpa who was visiting for the weekend. We were so excited and planned our whole day around this. When we drove all the way there we found out it's closed. My son was crushed and he cried. Yelp says open F-Sun, website says open Sat-Sun, so I did call ahead to verify the hours but the automated phone message says they're open 6 days a week. So confusing!! Got there at 9:15 on a Saturday and there was a wait already (so go early). They are really busy because of the stupid tik tok and insta vids. The pond is small in person and everyone's standing elbow to elbow. Some reviews say you're guaranteed to catch something; that's not true, I gave a fish away to someone who wasn't so lucky. Pro's: cool intro to fishing Con's: water is dirty with plastic floating around, dead fish floating around, small pond so a lot of tangled lines, the ceiling is a net so there are so many lines hanging from the top and some people casted and got stuck up there, inconsiderate people casting all the way across the pond and tangling us, and last but not least it's $10 a pound and each fish is around 3 pounds (before filet) we caught 3 fish so that's $90 + $10 tip. It's over priced for a little bit of meat. And the cherry on top there was a guy smoking cigarettes back to back around kids.
