We always go deep sea fishing, but we wanted to check this place! It's very affordable and very friend! The staff on the boat are very attentive and if you have questions they don't mind to help! Not happy about doing this but it needs to be talked about. Took my dad out for his only trip of the year, deep water rockfish. Approached by the crew in the morning before we boarded to get 16oz sinkers it's gonna be deep drops. We buy a couple per person. When we get to the zone we never passed 200ft deep. I asked the deckhand aren't we doing deep drops he said no not today it's not the group for it and wouldn't respond when I asked why did we bother with buying 16oz weights. Drifted all day getting tiny rockfish all around. People (including myself) just stopped fishing was a waste of time. Plus they brought on a bunch of regulars who just hugged the rail (in wheelchairs) and cut bait etc. weird boat. I know 22nd charges more but I've never seen them doing something like this. read more

The crew is great and always quite helpful. However, some other customers are real jerks . On Dec 30th 2024 I went with some buddies on the Victory. With 50 people on a boat and strong currents lines will get tangled. I had to help or wait for help to untangle line multiple times. It just happens. It's happened on every boat I've been on over the years. This was the first time some inconsiderate, rude jerk cut my line. I have braided line with mono top shot. I lost all my top shot. !!! That should be against fisherman's code. Unless the owner of the line gives permission it is NOT OK!! Where I come from if we get tangled people are polite enough not to do some boneheaded move like that. This is the first time I've ever had that happen. Now I have to go back and have more line added. Thanks a lot to the jerk who did this. Really makes me not want to go out on boats with these rude Californians anymore. The vast majority of fishermen are not jerks like that. But, just one rotten apple like that really makes me not want to deal with it anymore. We'll see read more

Went out overnight fishing rock cod and white fish on 12/30/18 - 12/31/18 on Eldorado. Weather was rough. Rock and roll all the way to San Nicolas island. The captain called it quit at 9:30 am on 12/31/18 and give everyone a voucher for 2019. Together with another voucher for fishing last day of the year, I have 2 free trips coming up. I put them in my back pocket. My wife washed my pants without checking. Now my 2 vouchers all smooched up. Can captain Jeff or the boss Steve Fukuto reissue the 2 vouchers for me? The are not excepting reservations with your pass stating they got too many passengers with passes scheduled to go and the have to make money. However the passes state they are good until 12-14-23. Don't book on the ElDorado, I will never do it again. The captain is unable to get on fish unless he's crowded up to other, better, fishing boats. The crew doesn't know how to gaff. They ruin the meat by putting the gaff in the middle of the fish. It's not hard to do it right, most of the other boats I go on gaff in the head to preserve the meat. The crew are rude and not helpful at all. The captain is incompetent and reduces your chance to catch fish. On my last trip, not on the ElDildo, I watched as the captain pulled up on a small, not moving, private boat with a tuna on the line and then proceed to back down on that boat. I could hear the private boat captain on the radio asking ElDildo to pull away. ElDildo got so close that the private boat captain asked if he could get a burrito. ElDildo responded with we don't have burritos then the PB captain asked if they had forward and could pull away from him. ElDildo stayed right on the PB and I even saw them get lines tangled with the PB because they were right on them. Dangerous, dumb and unnecessary, so happy I wasn't on the ElDildo that day. This review is for the El Dorado . This would be my second overnight fishing trip to date . Compared to 22nd Landing in San Pedro , the boats and the bathrooms here seem cleaner , the staff friendlier and more helpful than 22nd landing . Also, I was very surprised the hot food from the galley was actually pretty good ( I got a breakfast burrito and cheeseburgers ). For those doing a private charter , This is not a Carnival cruise , it's a fishing vessel where chain smokers and diesel fumes are part of the package . These guys will bust their asses for you to catch some fish for a very reasonable price. If there's any critique (and this goes for all charter fishing vessels everywhere) ; Let us protect our fisheries . I've done a lot of necropsies during my pathology rounds in Veterinary school for the dead marine creatures OC animal control or San Pedro would turnover and most would die from eating or getting caught in spent/ tangled fishing lines . I feel that the crew should do more to discourage the bad behavior of some anglers . I was picking up spent / tanged lines from the deck the whole trip . There are trash cans conveniently located on deck so there is no reason for this . Maybe put a sign up or charge bad anglers for littering lol read more

I went on overnight fishing to catch tuna. Long story short, no luck on catching one. What I remember about this trip was just boating riding instead of fishing. Boat went out at 8:30pm and started to fish around 6 am. However, after 30 minutes of fishing, captain decided to look for new stop and cruising for 90 minutes looking for a stop. Then about 30 minutes of fishing, cruising again to find new stop. This went on few times. Decent boating/ fishing experience. Especially since I don't have too many under my belt. Went with some friends on a wednesday or thursday. Woke up at the buttcrack of dawn for some fishin fun, or so we thought. fyi walmart sells fishing licenses I believe, so might be best to get all your crap together before fishing day. saves you an extra half hour of sleep. The deckhands were cool, obviously not overly accommodating because everyone's a man's man on this vessel. I might have been the only girl there that day. Lots of room on the boat too, so you won't be elbow to elbow or getting caught on someone's else's line all too often. I do think the fish were playing tricks on us that day. Everytime we'd situate in a spot, they'd move on the opp side. tons of fish would be pulled up by them folks, and we were left with that cricket chirpy noise. lol. read more

I went on a 3/4 fishing trip. I've never got sport fishing in my life. But boy did I have a blast! The crew is very friendly and everyone seems to know what they are doing. I thought I was going to be the stupid girlie girl and sit it out but I was right in with the rest of them bait my rod and casting away. I really wanted to catch a yellowtail but I was successful in catching a 11 lb bonita. It was really hard but they make sure that everyone catches a fish. I actually went last year and I think it's the hot months that they get good fishing. It was towards the end of the season so only 2 people on my trip caught a yellow tail. It cost a total of $75 for the permit, the trip, and rentals. They have a galley and they have BEER. But a lot of people brought their own food. Oh, remember to take sun block, I was burnt to a crisp. It's tons of fun and very exhausting but you get to take home your fish! Remember to take a cooler of ice in your car, so it doesn't stink the entire way home. I learned the hard way. They'll even filet it and clean it on the boat. I can't wait to ditch work and go back. I was really exited to get out there with my brother on this boat call the Ahra-Ahn but man the freaking deck crew on this boat was so messed up. We went out on 08/19/2020. I mean instead of making you feel good and comfortable, the "deck boss" starts yelling and saying y'all not paying attention when I said to set your drag and that's why you're loosing fish! I mean people go on this boats to have fun and fish. And the trip said 12 hour fishing trip but it took them 4 hours to get us to Catalina Island and another 3 to come back.. and keep in my that once there the boat also moves from spot to spot and you loose a bit more time.. Great boat. Shit crew. Capt parked us alongside kayakers and tourists and boaters and then the crew proceeded to scream "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?!" at anyone that drove over our lines or got too close which waa was often. "CAM" the deck hand/ cook was especially rude ALOT. From screaming "WATCH YOUR MOTHERFUCKING LINES! I WILL START CUTTING LINES IF I HAVE TO DO ONE MORE TANGLE!" to openly mocking the customers for this and that. Weed was def being smoked but not by the customers. Anytime anyone hooked a fish they had to go track down a deckhand and ask for help they would not help otherwise. Customers had to refill front and rear bait tanks or it wouldn't have got done at all. They got one lil sandwich bag of cut squid for 16 fisherman to fish 6 hrs with. Needless to say after couple hrs rhere was no more squid. I personally won jackpot and was handed 105 dollars with 16 people fishing and a 10 dollar buy in. I'm a fan of fireworks and celebrating America's birthday, so through Living Social, I purchased two tickets on the Liberty to cruise out toward the Queen Mary to watch the fireworks display on July 4th. South Bay Cruises' (SBC) management of my tickets was very smooth. There were a few changes about how the booking had to be made between SBC and Living Social, and they were administered without me having to intervene. SBC communicated with me via email and answered any questions that I had in a prompt and professional manner. We arrived for the cruise on-time and found the dock easily. There were a lot of people, yet there was no line for us to check in. We provided our names and received our blue wristbands to board The Liberty without a hitch. A large and patriotic pelican sat perched upon the dock welcoming the crowd to his home. The Liberty was the adult boat option. It offered a cash bar and a band. There was a family-oriented, under 21 years of age boat that was available as well. Jake "The Honey Bear" Heun, our Captain greeted everyone as they boarded obviously aware of the responsibility that comes with having his fishing vessel full of party goers. He exuded the air of a Captain, and set my mind at ease. Throughout the trip, he kept watchful eye to ensure our safety and to make sure the deck hands were unobtrusive, yet aware of passenger safety. He stood watch and provided ample warning to us, as the boat dropped its large metal anchor into the bay. At various times throughout the tour, I spotted the Captain and his staff doing the work that comes with navigating these waterways, so all of the passengers could have a great time. We pushed off on-time and the party began. Of course, the weather was perfect. The notes of The Jim Nichols Band Featuring Estela on Sax filled the soft air with well done, familiar classic rock and blues covers from Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac and Jimmy Buffet among others. Drinks flowed. The grill kicked on. We passed box boats and a battleship, bridges and gantry cranes. The Chief Cook was personable and offered simple fare that was as good as a hamburger, burrito and chips can get. The fireworks show was awesome; made all the more so when passengers began singing an impromptu rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. We pulled anchor and cruised back to port. The libations had been plentiful and laughter filled the night air as strangers became friends and buddies. Went out on the 3/4 day ultra light trip on the Victory on Saturday, 7/25. Nevermind the COVID-19 rules not being enforced, both guests and crew not wearing a mask. The issue I have with this outfit is that the crew spends more time fishing than actually helping paying customers. There was a large group of about 15 guests that were obvious 1st timers (they all had rental equipment). These poor saps could be seen walking around the deck looking for help removing a sculpin from their hooks. Meanwhile, the crew is on starboard side of boat, rod in hand fishing away. Not the first time I've seen this from this outfit and it's reason I hadn't been back in years. In essence, we pay so the crew can fish. However, the only crew members that did not fish were the cook and what I'll call the "bait guy" with LB tattoo on his back. The bait guy seemed to be the only one really working. It will be another few years before I return to this outfit. Also, the fish count on the website seem a bit inflated. read more
