Walking the Freedom Trail was one of the things I wanted to do in Boston. We paid for the guided tour from the visitor center in Boston Common. Wear comfortable shoes because it may be 2-1/2 hours from the start to where it ended at Faneuil Hall (where it ended), but there are times going up hill, on cobblestones, and up stairs. We had an absolute blast, and I learned (or relearned) so many things about American history in the process. I think it was well worth what we paid for it.
The Freedom Trail is the most fun to learn about local and US history, call it a scavenger hunt. You need to bring comfy shoes, water, a map, a phone with you. Some people opt to do it over 2 days, or just do half of it. You can join a tour group (there are a lot, check in at the Visitor Center in Boston Common where the trail officially starts) or do it on your own, at your leisure. My husband did a guided tour many years ago, but some tours do just half, like in his case, they stop at Faneuil Hall. I am not a huge fan of guided tours so I opted to do my own, I have prepared, read on it, printed out a colored map from their site (you won't find any since they want you to do the guided tours), I also had a site on my phone that we could go to anyway for short information. I did the whole Freedom Trail in half a day and a friend from Boston mentioned that we're the only ones he met that did it in its entirety. Started at Boston Common, then Park Street Church, the State House, the Granary Burying Ground. Then, step by step we have found all the sites till Faneuil Hall. They don't really have many signs, but I had my map, my phone and some other groups of people looking for the same spots. Very interesting and fascinating to have so much historic sites so close to each other. The trouble was going to North End from Faneuil Hall to Paul Revere's house. We ended up at Aquarium, knew it's wrong. Returned. So, from Faneuil Hall take a left not a right toward North End (as you face Sam Adam's statue). This way, you will be in North End in a minute, at Revere's house in a few. We continued on till Bunker Hill to see the monument passing the bridge to Charlestown and did the USS Constitution last. Then took the ferry (the stop is a short walk) back to the Aquarium. It is a great way to see the city, besides learning about history, checking out various parts of town. It surely made me check out a few books on history from the library to find out more, go deeper into the Freedom Trail times and tales. Pleasant and interesting walk, memorable for us.

Faneuil Hall still pulses with energy, its cobblestone plaza alive with vendors and performers. Inside, the Great Hall offers a stirring glimpse into Boston's revolutionary fervor, though the building's historic layout poses challenges for those with mobility impairments. The National Park Service visitor center on the ground floor is accessible, but navigating the upper levels can be challenging. Crossing into the North End, the Paul Revere House stands tucked among modern buildings like a stubborn relic. Copp's Hill Burying Ground offers a haunting finale, perched above the harbor with views toward Charlestown. But the gravel paths and sloped terrain can make it a tough stop for anyone with limited mobility. In truth, while the Freedom Trail is a national treasure, it's absolutely not handicapped accessible in many areas. Brick paths buckle, historic buildings resist retrofitting, and signage rarely warns of barriers ahead. Understandable nearly all of Boston predates this sort of need. We didn't take a guided tour and we didn't religiously follow the trail, however, if you're into this kind of thing, I would highly recommend doing a guided tour or using a map to figure out which way to go. It's kind of hard to not end up on the trail while you're sightseeing in the city. There is a golden line on the ground that you can physically follow. Very fun and interesting to cross paths with the golden line while you're doing other things. You could really spend all day doing the freedom trail or you could pop in and out of the trail while you do other sightseeing or activities.
What a Great Tour to do while visiting Boston!!! This is a 4 Hour Walking Tour.. no corny outfits just great history learning. We walked all over the city at the Start of the Revolutionary war to the end. We got to see gravesites and battle grounds. We loved little Italy (North End). We could see Bunker Hill but decided to go another day as we were pooped!!! The Service was Top Knotch. Our guide had no cheat sheets he knew his History!!! So well worth the money!
This is the new way to see Boston and to get to understand a lot of the history that goes along with this City. With that being said, it is all about walking if you choose to go that route. There are plenty of other tour areas that offer rides around some of these spots as well. We started in the Boston common area hand made it to you a few locations such as the fountain and the Massachusetts state house. After that, we started to exploring on her own and then just never kind of went back to the trail.
A must do experience in Boston seeing all the historical sights was so cool and so interesting! Starting in the Boston Common and ending at either Bunker Hill or the USS Constellation in Charlestown there is so much to see and explore. There is a brick path to follow through the trail and through Boston north end with so much to see along the way. If you're interested there are loads of guided tours to take part in and plenty of signage explaining the various sights. No visit to Boston would be complete without this experience!

I decided to address this lapse with my 7,300th Yelp review milestone because while Jamie W and I could've benefited from a knowledgeable guide, we followed the trail by ourselves with the help of the Freedom Trail app. It also wasn't my first time walking it, and we wanted to follow our own pace anyway. It's only 2-1/2 miles long, but naturally it felt longer because of the sixteen sites we needed to stop and review. Like most people, we started in Boston Common and headed north zigzagging through the North End until we finally reached the Bunker Hill Monument in the Charlestown neighborhood. With only a faint recollection of American history during the Revolutionary War, we found the trail endlessly fascinating. Even if you're not a huge history fan, as an American there's so much to appreciate about this wonderful walk through our nation's past. There are several apps that provide audio tours for under $10 including the National Park Service. You don't need to have your Maps app open the whole time as you follow a brick trail down the sidewalk the whole way. There were a few spots where it stopped due to construction but it was easy to pick back up. You can stop at places as long as you like and read about them from their website. So much to learn about the road to the revolution and even more to gawk at as you realize you are standing on the same grounds in which our great nation was born, where patriots disagreed civilly, and where freedom was paved. The bridge after Old North Church to the USS Constitution is a bit long and could be troublesome if you can't walk uphill long distances. Be aware that some sites including museums and monuments are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

We visited the Freedom Trail on a day trip to Boston and had absolutely nothing planned. We decided to walk it after seeing so many recommendations online and we're so glad we did! The Freedom Trail is a great way to explore the city and learn about its history all in one walk. If you're visiting Boston for the first time, I highly recommend walking the Freedom Trail! There are paid tour guides available but walking it yourself is FREE! read more
Doing the Freedom Trail in Boston is one of the top listed things to do you see on anything recommendation list for the city. It's pretty walkable with the trail being only 2.5 mile, easy to follow with the red brick trail path to follow and you can visit the sites yourself or with a tour guide. I had limited time so I just followed the brick path and did the tour myself but if you have time I'd definitely recommend doing some form of a tour in downtown that cover some of the sites like the burial grounds, churches and chapels. With that being said there are so many tours going on at the same time (free and or paid tours) if you're in a hurry like I was while you're walking around you can sort of ease drop on some of the tours and soak in some of the historical information the tour guide is dishing out. For the Paul Revere house, and Old State House they do have admission fee to see parts of the museum. For the Bunker Hill monument and USS Constitution I believe Tuesdays and Wednesday they aren't open for inside views so check their operation hours beforehand. You can still visit the area you just won't be able to board the ship, or take the stairs to the top of Bunker Hill if they aren't open. read more

I've been dreaming about doing the freedom trail for about 10 years. Today was my chance I started the freedom trail in the Boston Commons such a wonderful and moving experience. This is something you should do once in your life. read more
Aaron was our tour guide, he was great !! He was very entertaining and knowledgeable. The walking tour was about 90 minutes throughout the city and we really enjoyed getting to experience the history of Boston. Overall highly recommended !! read more

We had the 10am walking tour on 7/28. Jeremiah Poope (yes that's his real name) was an incredible guide. A mixture of history and humor interwoven with personal anecdotes. He had us laughing and we really enjoyed ourselves! If you go, ask to be part of Jeremiah's Poope group! read more
