A fixture on Quinpool for decades, my frequenting of Freeman's has risen exponentially in the past year, being a destination for post-softball beer and snacks and now that my girlfriend and I recently moved into the neighbourhood. Freeman's is the sort of spot that chain restaurants want to be, but can never quite pull off because they lack the history and authenticity. The old times ads, photos of celebs, records and random nick nacks that adorn the walls, nooks and crannies of Freeman's are there because they've accumulated over years of being a successful neighbourhood pub and restaurant, not because they screened well with focus groups. A living monument to the mind-boggling idiocy of liquor regulations in Nova Scotia, Freeman's has a distinctive restaurant half with cozy, covered booths and tables, and the lounge side where the bar, a handful of TVs and some more tables. Their stained glass light shades remind me of restos when I was a little kid. Tacky then, nostalgic now. And maybe still a little tacky, but they work here. The menu consists of an eclectic mix of the typical pubs apps, burgers, sandwiches and wraps before crossing over to the Italian side with pastas and of course their pizza. Bonus points are allotted for their all day breakfast items, a bounty to lovers of breakfast and/or people with irregular work schedules, of which I happen to be both. There are also well-documented gluten-free pizza options for the gluten-tarded/those on a trendy diet. Freeman's is primarily known for their pizza, and I've gotten it several times now. The chipotle pizza is a favourite, with a respectable amount of heat, compared to many pizzas or foods in general that claim to be spicy but aren't. The house specialty pizza comes with Italian sausage, ground beef, feta, tomato, green pepper and red onions, and plenty of all of them, so be prepared for a rich, hearty 'za. The crusts aren't quite a thin crust and have a bit of airiness to them, but aren't worth writing home about. The grilled veggie salad is good; with mushrooms, tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, red peppers and onions, it's moderately healthy without being boring. The accompanying pita crisps were tasty as well, but the tzatziki was a little weird, being overly thick and on the bland side. Their version of potato skins aren't so much actual hollowed out potato skins as you might anticipate so much as they are slices of skin-on potatoes in a ramekin with a bunch of cheese and bacon on top. It isn't an awful execution, and serves as an adequate as a carb/cheese/bacon delivery method. On my most recent visit, I went the traditional route to see how their kitchen would fare, going with the spaghetti and meatballs, which also comes with a side salad (I went Caesar) and a couple slices of garlic bread. It's a decently sized portion, especially for the $14 price tag; not enough to have you throw in the towel and take the rest home, but you'll be leaving with a full belly. The sauce was ok, with a predominant oregano flavour, but not much depth otherwise. Four or five meatballs a bit smaller than golf balls adorned my spaghetti and they were good. They were beefy and seasoned well and held their form nicely, but also broke apart easily without being mushy inside. The side Caesar salad was more of a Brutus salad, killing the ideal of a Caesar salad with limp, yellow-ish lettuce, bland dressing and your run-of-the-mill, store-bought croutons. On the non-food side of things, Freeman's has become the new trivia locale for my friends and I. It's really close to a few of us and it starts early (7ish) so you're not up crazy late on a Tuesday night. The questions are a good mix of whatever you can imagine, with a 10 question music round bookend-ed by two 25 rounds of general questions. Tickets are given out for random draw prizes, the winning team gets coupons for two free pizzas and they have a trivia season, with the top team claiming a prize after a few months of competition. It's a good way to relax and pretend you're using your brain, when all you're really doing is plumbing the depths of your random knowledge and having a couple drinks. It may not be a top of line sort of place, but Freeman's is a solid spot to go to for a drink, trivia or to have a bite at. read more

My general experience at Freeman's has been okay on a number of previous occasions that we have ordered pizza. This okay streak, however, was broken based on the quality of the pizzas (and salad, which is pretty hard to be subpar) we received on the evening of January 1st, 2018. We understand based on comments from the server that the kitchen was swamped with orders. ~However~, this does not excuse the poor quality and lack of toppings on the pizzas, or the fact that the salad had looked as though it was assembled by a three-year-old (large chunks of romaine that had not been cut, but rather left whole.) As far as the pizzas go, we ordered a medium vegetarian, and a medium 5th Avenue. The vegetarian had an overly large ring of crust that had NO toppings whatsoever, and what topping that were there were fruguly given (including a small amount of cheese; the basis for any good pizza.) The 5th Avenue also had a large ring of crust that rivaled the Emera Oval, and what toppings graced the center had been clearly overcooked and were very dry. Considering pizza is their claim to fame, this order doesn't give much hope for any other menu items. Based on the price paid for two "medium" pizzas, I would have hoped not to get something that made me write a yelp review. Freeman's is surviving on their bark, rather than their bite. read more

This place is getting the BIG 5 STARS from me. Not because the food is good (it's not the best but it doesn't suck either). Not because the service is outstanding (I've had better). But because I freaking love dive bars and FLNY is about as dive-y as it gets in my book. Seriously. No I'm serious on this one. The second I walked into this place I knew it was going to become one of my favorite places to hang out. You can tell me the food sucks, the beer is warm and the place is a crap hole. I'll come back with a "I love Freeman's" response. There is something close to my heart sitting in a bar with people that look like they've never seen the light of day or are a little "off centered" in their day to day lives. To boot, the musical gigs they've been offering us patrons is pretty much off the hook in my book. I've happened in on a few Sunday afternoons (cause when you run a marathon you're on the look out for a good pizza to scarf down) and each time I've really loved the musical accompaniment to my food. Freeman's Little New York is a staple on Quinpool Road. From the times that was in St Pats High school across the street running for a slice to the nights that nothing was opened after 2am except Freemans. I must say that they can make a mean pizza with loads of toppings to chose from and plenty of cheese. Not much has really changed since the times that I used to go except in the summer they have the outside tables. I like the fact that the front window opens onto the street is cool. Menu is has a large range from pasta to salads, Greek is delicious to lasagna and Garlic bread with cheese is to die for. Oh and what a great bar, plenty of great drinks to go around. I guess the first time I ate at Freeman's Little New York was in the early '90's when we visited our daughter who was attending Dalhousie. And just to keep it in the family, I understand that my son-in-law's first job was working in their kitchen, not too long after that. So all these years later, now that we're living in Halifax, I thought I'd give it another try. And it was like stepping in a time warp....everything was the same., except now they have slot machines in the back. The service is still friendly and efficient, the pizzas delicious and priced well and they were very nice about serving little kids. Hard to believe "mummy" is the same girl we took here all those years ago. I'm a lunch and dinner girl myself, but if you're into late nights, this is the place to cater to those late night munchies...not to mention a full bar and lots of bar games. But let's talk pizza...we ordered two - the House Special with lots of Italian sausage, ground beef, fresh tomatoes, onions and feta cheese and it was delicious. I've been going to Freeman's for over a decade, though they've been around for much longer. My sister used to bring me here when she started university and I was in junior high, and now I'm finished university myself and still love going back. Their garlic fingers are THE. BEST. EVER. There's no beating them. I live in Ontario now where you cannot get this east coast delicacy and the first thing I do when I fly home is call up Freeman's on my way home from the airport and order an extra large XXXtra cheesy garlicky goodness. They have changed their menu in recent years, though most of the items are the same. They made a few minor changes, such as to their mighty burger (I think it's now a mighty blue cheese burger) but all in all it's pretty much the same. You won't be disappointed when you order pretty much anything off their menu. They have live music on the weekends which makes it a great hang out spot. Called the restaurant thinking there must be some sort of mistake, nope. Suddenly a salad doesn't come with this anymore. The employee on the phone(that you could tell really didn't care at all) told us "If you want a salad you need to order it as an add on. There's an option to add a salad for $3 when you select your pasta." We advised him this option was not there but he kept saying he was sorry and that it was. No offer to send the salad, although he was offering us other things for free. Could have kept a happy customer by sending the $3 salad. Freeman's for quite some time was my favorite place to order pizza from. Even though I lived just outside of Halifax, I would make the commute to get their pizza because it was always the best in town. Since then, the food quality at Freeman's seems to have gone down hill. While the pizza is still good, it's not worth making a special commute for. Freeman's is my go to restaurant for delivery. They are quick, they have a variety of options, and their food is actually worthy of leftover status. By this, I mean that most delivery food is practically inedible the next day, but Freeman's is always satisfying. I personally like to always give exact change + tip so I usually order more than I need to ensure I won't need to ask for change, making leftover status a huge role in my ordering decisions. Their burgers are decent, the seasoning on the fries are amazing. I have yet to actually try their pizza but that is next on my list of things to do. At the beginning of December, I placed an order while studying for exams. When the delivery guy showed up, he also had a small bag of bite-sized brownies for me. The owners were giving them away as a Holiday "thank-you" with a little note thank you for your business. Their online ordering is an added bonus as well. read more

I am grossly obsessed with this place. The service is always impeccable. The food is always delicious and sometimes they have live bands playing which are always a delight. Can you believe they deliver til 3am? I love this city. Their salads are to die for. I ALWAYS order their greek salad. They give wayyyy too much dressing but know that so they always give it on the side so you can control it yourself. (I usually only use half). If you're not big on salad, they have everything else you could imagine. I'm kind of useless because this place is a pizza joint and I don't eat pizza much but i've heard amazing things. Their pasta is great as well (but it's hard to mess up pasta.) They also have a large drink menu :) The service is fast regardless of eat in or delivery. A pretty great little neighbourhood joint. I recently moved into the neighbourhood, and having been a patron at the downtown Freeman's, I thought I'd check this one out. It's quite a bit smaller, and more intimate (I don't think they do any live music, but they do have a jukebox and 1 or 2 VLTs) The food is just ok, but the service, atmosphere, and adult beverages more than make up for the mediocre food. I have been to Freeman's a dozen times or more, and I have NEVER had a worse experience than last night. I went in with a huge pasta craving with my fiance. We both got beers, which arrived in a reasonable amount of time. Then we ordered and waited longer than usual. This didn't bother me too much, except when our dinner arrived, our salads arrived at the same time as our mains which was a little unfortunate. But not a big deal. The big deal came when we were finished. I had finished about half of my pasta, wanting to take the rest home. And we waited for our waitress to check on us. And waited. And waited. And then she walked by, and signaled she would be right there. I went to the bathroom and came back, and she STILL hadn't arrived. And we waited some more. Eventually, we just went up to the cash to pay. Of course we didn't have our bill yet, which confused the other waitresses, but they quickly produced it and let us pay. Where was our waitress? Sitting at another booth, laughing away with the other patrons. I understand Friday nights are busy, but our waitress barely checked on us in the first place. Other people got their bills within a reasonable amount of time after finishing. I didn't even get to take the rest of my pasta home, because it's not like I could have brought it up to the cash with me (although I suppose it would have proved a point). Anyway, as much as I have enjoyed Freeman's in the past, I don't think we'll be going there for awhile. Tara and I have a new favorite haunt. It just happens to be Freeman's. It's not fancy. It's not new. It's frankly kind of a dive bar. And it's not even really in our neck of the woods. But after a beer there before dining at Relish (before Relish had their liquor license) we found ourselves returning and now we're a little obsessed. Our experience with service here has been pub perfection. Quick to deliver your beer, and bring you your grub fast and hot. Our servers are friendly and now that we're regulars the greetings are warmer than ever. The food is your standard pub fare, we've tried nachos and fried pepperoni so far. But what you have to try if you visit is their pizza. Our absolute favorite is the Ironworker Pizza (lotsa meat goodness) which is what we crave during our post-run adventures lately. We've discovered they have live music on Sunday afternoons from a variety of local musicians and we dig it. We can't wait to try more of the menu and to get over there for a trivia night which is apparently quite the fun night. Part of the random appeal of Freeman's may just be the variety on the multitude of TV screens in the joint. I think most people will agree that when you order nachos you usually receive more nachos than toppings - at Freemans on Quinpool it is completely the opposite. There was way more toppings than there were nachos. Not in a bad way though, these nachos were delicious! Their chicken wings are also really good! Ah Freeman's! So many memories...and the best part is basically nothing has changed in the 10 years I have been frequenting this place! I started going here when I was in high school, yes that long ago, and we would go here for lunch! Cheap, but more exciting than the typical fast food spots. They have the basic and classic for pub fare. Their potato skins are the great ones, not boats or wedges, but sliced potato with sooo much cheese and bacon bits! Mmmmm....The BEST! They specialize in pizza, but I can't even say what it is like because IF i have ever tried it, it was a long time ago! I can vouch for their super duper extra cheesy garlic fingers. Friends of mine have even asked for less cheese and still they are a cheesy delight...(I personally and all for as much cheese as anyone wants to give me!) The prices are low and the service is generally fantastic...the place is a little dingy and has not been updated in a while, but I am not picky so it doesn't bother me! They also have some great beers and ciders and are open late, which is always a nice touch! I've probably been to Freeman's on Quinpool a million times. I lived in the area for so long, and it's the only place to get a drink at night. In fact, I've been going to Freeman's for so long, I've boycotted it for about four separate time periods and still frequented the place a million times. I must say I don't get too adventurous with the menu choices. I pretty much always get french fries (which are my favourite fries in Halifax), or hummus (which they've kindly given me with lettuce, chips or other vegetables when I needed to avoid wheat). The hummus is pretty hit or miss. I've had pizza, stir fries and a few other things, which were all okay. The reasons I boycotted Freeman's were usually all personal-- my bill was higher than I wanted it to be, they didn't give me free cake on my birthday when I was 21 (even though it's not their policy), or possibly the wait time (it gets incredibly busy in there!). I'm too old and sensible to boycott Freeman's now, and I wouldn't want to. I've moved from the area and I don't get to Freeman's as often as I used to. It's nostalgic, the waitresses are great, and it's as good a place as any to watch hockey or wrestling . I'll be damned if those french fries don't taste even better than fantastic when you're kinda drunk, it's three a.m on Saturday night, and there's nothing else around to eat besides gross corn chips from Irving. I've woken up with ketchup on myself on more than one occasion after a late night Freeman's adventure. read more

Average North American semi-Italian diner. The menu is huge and varied; the lunch specials are cheap; the draft beers are cold. This location is a little dark, owing to the corridor-shaped building with the raised seating by the window that blocks out some of the already-meagre sunlight. The seating is mostly booths, so great for 2-4 people. Sports TVs are on here and there, and I think they had a jukebox. It's so typically average: average menu of sandwiches and pastas, average prices, average brands of alcohol, average amount of fake New York-Italian kitsch. Rarely do I desire to NOT leave a tip! Such was the case late last week- the server was so blunt and rude to be startling. Came in for drinks and later night eats... beer was tasty (Oatmeal stout). Rude service turned to appalling when she announced "last call" at 1:30 am. We ordered a round... when she came back with drinks at 1:40 we asked (from out of town) when you could order until in Halifax, and when you could drink ordered drinks until. She said you could order until 2, drink to 2:30, without seeing if wanted a last drink. Seeing her pour drinks for patrons at the bar at exactly 2 (checked on my phone) I asked her for another drink that I could finish by 2:30. She rudely denied me with some lame excuse. I usually get Freeman's delivery and it's literally always fresh and on time. While their menu is quite limited for a vegetarian, their nachos are good and their pizza is also quite decent. The delivery staff are super friendly and if they just had a few more things for a vegetarian besides nachos, pizza and garlic fingers (they have a vege quesadilla but it's a bit meh), I'd give it 5 stars. Keep in mind, I'm reviewing the delivery. I think I was there once in my life. I don't really like people so I'm more of a delivery guy than a go to a restaurant guy but their delivery is the best in town and it's more or less 24 hours (11am-5am!!!). The place was pretty busy, mostly looked like folks were partaking in the liquid diets. Fonds memories of pitchers on a Monday night in my university days flooded back. So I decided to go with it and order Nachos. Yum! They are great! Service was a bit sketchy though, our waitress never came back to check on our drinks or food. The food came from the kitchen relatively quick, but hey, it's nachos, not a long prep time there. So if you're stuck on a week night and need some foodage, I recommend Freeman's. I used to live just buildings down from Freemans; where I spent many late nights (or early mornings however you want to look at it). It's a haven for late night, after bar hang-outs as the kitchen is open until 5am. The food is only mediocre at best and wait times can make ya wanna leave. For instance, on my last visit I had ordered just a slice of pizza so my wait time would be reduced. We ventured into Freeman's after a show and I was hungry. Well, my slice was being made fresh, which yes is fantastic but I wasn't told that's what I was waiting for. If I knew I was gonna have to wait I probably would have ordered something different. So after finding out it was being made fresh I ordered the a Greek platter (the bf was hungry too); which consisted only of pita points, hummus and spanokopita. The hummus was quite flavorless and the spanko was served cold (yes, I asked it was supposed to be cold), not my fave. But, I will continue to return. Freeman's is just one of those watering holes that must be frequented from time to time. The atmosphere is fun, the drinks are cold and the seating is great for people watching! read more

Sure they aren't amazing or absolutely incredible, but they have always been good and I love their atmosphere. Freeman's is a solid restaurant. They have been consistent for the ten or so years that I've known them and that's saying a lot! Their atmosphere is sort of a homage to New York which is fun. I am a fan of sitting in a booth and they have plenty for their customer's. In the summer time they have an outdoor patio as well. I never use it because, well why bother getting sun brunt when there are booth's to be had? The food is exactly what I expect for the price. Their garlic fingers are apologetically greasy and their pizza is very good. I also suggest their Nachos which are priced at only $10. So they definitely aren't trying to rip anyone off and know that in order to keep their customer's they must have good quality and good prices. The staff are very friendly. Some stand out as being incredible and if they were all like that this place might be closer to a five star rating. But I never walk into Freeman's expecting bad customer service which obviously means they are doing a good job. However, we knew it was not the best food, and the prices are over the top for the grease filled plates you are getting. The pluses: it is open super super late. Great place to hang out after work. Although, last call is 1:45. People are nice. Booths are comfy. Garlic knots and potato skins are good. Downsides: can take soooo long, especially delivery. Desserts are frozen and over priced (however it was the only place I knew could deliver cake at 2 am), food is greasy, beer selection lacks. Freeman's stays open late (maybe even all night?) and does have good pizza available by-the-slice. But it's the potato skins that have left me wandering the world and longing for more. Deep-friend, smothered with cheese, these beauties are the ideal late-night cure to a belly full of Halifax beer. Should you have not sampled enough Halifax beer, there is plenty on tap. Not sure what the appeal of this place is, apart from the fact that it's pretty much the only beer and pizza joint within a few blocks of downtown. Sure wish I tried the pizza here, because the donair plate was awful. I came here with a friend tonight for a few drinks and some food. If I didn't think the decor was cozy and kind of neat i would give this place 1 star instead of 2. I thought the idea of the different themed booths were kind of neat, even though we didn't sit in one. This place is like the textbook definition of laid back and casual, I would feel completely comfortable coming here in sweatpants, i dig that. Anyway, my friend ordered the potato skins. I ordered a beer and the donair plate. As I'm from Ottawa, I go crazy over donairs and get them whenever possible. I made the mistake of thinking "pizza place = decent donairs". Freeman's has proved me wrong because the donair I had here was hands down the worst I've had. You can get those donair kits from places like Walmart and Giant TIger that have the strangely uniformly sliced, oval shaped pieces of meat that taste really weird. This place also has that type of meat. Diiisgusting. I know now to ask if they have a spit roasting donair meat if I don't see one, because boxed donair meat is bad. It came with potato wedges that weren't crispy and were completely flavorless. I expected them to add seasoning or something to them. To top it off the waitress was very aloof. She didn't check up on us once, however we did get our food nice and hot so I can't complain there. I do hear excellent things about the pizza so I'm going to make sure to come back at some point and try it. However, in my opinion, a restaurant should only serve food they know is tasty, instead of serving subpar food just for the sake of expanding their menu, and for that reason it gets 2 stars from me. read more

Crazy how this place is only closed for 4 hours everyday. All the food here is delicious. The burgers here became my favorite in town after the first time I had one there. It was the guacamole burger. Mmm.... The pizza is very tasty and they run super sick deals after a certain hour I believe. They also have great onion rings, fish and chips, and in the restaurant they have a digital jukebox. So if you are addicted to music, that might help. read more
