    a whole pizza
    Star-Bellied S.

My general experience at Freeman's has been okay on a number of previous occasions that we have ordered pizza. This okay streak, however, was broken based on the quality of the pizzas (and salad, which is pretty hard to be subpar) we received on the evening of January 1st, 2018. We understand based on comments from the server that the kitchen was swamped with orders. ~However~, this does not excuse the poor quality and lack of toppings on the pizzas, or the fact that the salad had looked as though it was assembled by a three-year-old (large chunks of romaine that had not been cut, but rather left whole.) As far as the pizzas go, we ordered a medium vegetarian, and a medium 5th Avenue. The vegetarian had an overly large ring of crust that had NO toppings whatsoever, and what topping that were there were fruguly given (including a small amount of cheese; the basis for any good pizza.) The 5th Avenue also had a large ring of crust that rivaled the Emera Oval, and what toppings graced the center had been clearly overcooked and were very dry. Considering pizza is their claim to fame, this order doesn't give much hope for any other menu items. Based on the price paid for two "medium" pizzas, I would have hoped not to get something that made me write a yelp review. Freeman's is surviving on their bark, rather than their bite.

    They have good beer!

This place is getting the BIG 5 STARS from me. Not because the food is good (it's not the best but it doesn't suck either). Not because the service is outstanding (I've had better). But because I freaking love dive bars and FLNY is about as dive-y as it gets in my book. Seriously. No I'm serious on this one. The second I walked into this place I knew it was going to become one of my favorite places to hang out. You can tell me the food sucks, the beer is warm and the place is a crap hole. I'll come back with a "I love Freeman's" response. There is something close to my heart sitting in a bar with people that look like they've never seen the light of day or are a little "off centered" in their day to day lives. To boot, the musical gigs they've been offering us patrons is pretty much off the hook in my book. I've happened in on a few Sunday afternoons (cause when you run a marathon you're on the look out for a good pizza to scarf down) and each time I've really loved the musical accompaniment to my food. P.S. Love the pizza!

My friend and I went in today! It was a great! The service is wonderful as always! My lunch was good! Aside from the slightly under cooked batter, the fish was PERFECTLY cooked, so no worries! I told our waitress, and they gave me a voucher for a free dish next time! Totally beyond what I expected! I ate my whole meal (except the batter) an was very pleased with it, but they stand by their food and quality, I'm very happy to say I'm a BIG fan of Freeman's, their service and their food! This is not like my usual reviews, this is a full out love fest! I love Freeman's!

Love this place. Great laid back local hangout. Easy to lose time sitting back and sharing a Big Brownie (huge waaaarm gooey brownie with ice cream, heaven) Tip: Trivia night means a chance at free pizza.

Freeman's Little New York is a staple on Quinpool Road. From the times that was in St Pats High school across the street running for a slice to the nights that nothing was opened after 2am except Freemans. I must say that they can make a mean pizza with loads of toppings to chose from and plenty of cheese. Not much has really changed since the times that I used to go except in the summer they have the outside tables. I like the fact that the front window opens onto the street is cool. Menu is has a large range from pasta to salads, Greek is delicious to lasagna and Garlic bread with cheese is to die for. Oh and what a great bar, plenty of great drinks to go around. Cheers!

I guess the first time I ate at Freeman's Little New York was in the early '90's when we visited our daughter who was attending Dalhousie. And just to keep it in the family, I understand that my son-in-law's first job was working in their kitchen, not too long after that. So all these years later, now that we're living in Halifax, I thought I'd give it another try. And it was like stepping in a time warp....everything was the same., except now they have slot machines in the back. The service is still friendly and efficient, the pizzas delicious and priced well and they were very nice about serving little kids. Hard to believe "mummy" is the same girl we took here all those years ago. I'm a lunch and dinner girl myself, but if you're into late nights, this is the place to cater to those late night munchies...not to mention a full bar and lots of bar games. But let's talk pizza...we ordered two - the House Special with lots of Italian sausage, ground beef, fresh tomatoes, onions and feta cheese and it was delicious. And for the little ones ...a cheese pizza that was quite a hit. So good, in fact that the left overs were gobbled up by daddy and poppa as soon as they got home.

Black bean sweet potato burger and side of greek salad (no feta)

Excellent food, service, and space (if a teensy bit crowded). Incredibly comfortable, sports bar feel without it being over the top. Great for a small group! The black bean sweet potato burger was fantastic - I subbed guacamole instead of curry mayo and it was delicious! The rest of the company particularly enjoyed the onion rings. Would recommend to groups that have diverse taste preferences - there is something for everyone!

EXXXtra cheesy garlic fingers! The best around

I've been going to Freeman's for over a decade, though they've been around for much longer. My sister used to bring me here when she started university and I was in junior high, and now I'm finished university myself and still love going back. Their garlic fingers are THE. BEST. EVER. There's no beating them. I live in Ontario now where you cannot get this east coast delicacy and the first thing I do when I fly home is call up Freeman's on my way home from the airport and order an extra large XXXtra cheesy garlicky goodness. They have changed their menu in recent years, though most of the items are the same. They made a few minor changes, such as to their mighty burger (I think it's now a mighty blue cheese burger) but all in all it's pretty much the same. You won't be disappointed when you order pretty much anything off their menu. They have live music on the weekends which makes it a great hang out spot. Will be continuing to go for many, many more years.

Delivery menu which DOES NOT show the option to add a salad for $3.

Ordered Freeman's for delivery today. Pre Covid, one of our favourite spots to eat! Usually ordering lasagna, which comes with bread and salad. Today, to our surprise, no salad. Called the restaurant thinking there must be some sort of mistake, nope. Suddenly a salad doesn't come with this anymore. The employee on the phone(that you could tell really didn't care at all) told us "If you want a salad you need to order it as an add on. There's an option to add a salad for $3 when you select your pasta." We advised him this option was not there but he kept saying he was sorry and that it was. No offer to send the salad, although he was offering us other things for free. Could have kept a happy customer by sending the $3 salad. Attached is the photo showing there is NO option to add a salad for $3.

    Fish n chips. Tasty enough.

Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

This is not a tourist bar, unless you are a linoleum architecture tourist, or a $2.75 tequila shot…read moretourist, or a tourist of watching tight knit groups of locals sit around in circular formation. Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

Insanely good! I got the fish and chips (I'm turning into my father, ordering it wherever I go, uhooo!). The pieces were large and the batter was perfect; you could tell the fish was fresh. The chips were home made and delicious. We were the only people in there besides the few gamblers in the games room and the staff. So, obviously our server was super attentive and speedy; he filled our water glasses for us about 4 times! It was awesome. I feel like Gus' pub is like the hidden gem of greasy pub style food. He said he thought someone had already taken our order. All was good! My white hot restaurant rage slowly drained from my face. I was happy again. The reason it was just Okay was the super loud bros in the back, screaming about their weekend. I mean they were screaming. I felt like these guys might be regulars the way they were so comfortable here. I mean, I don't even scream in my own house. I'm never that comfortable. A lot of other tables were glaring over at them as well. Hello? Do you live here? Are you that confident that everyone in here wants to hear your conversation? Because I will bet my hard earned money they don't. They couldn't have been drunk, it was only 1pm on Sunday. Maybe they were drunk on VLT gambling. Who knows. All I know is, this place was full of regulars, at the bar, at tables, in the VLT room and I was uncomfortable. The Jenny burger was definitely worth all the uncomfortableness though. I added fries and coleslaw for only $3.50! This has to be one of the best pub burgers in the city. Standard but nice atmosphere with green walls, large wooden bar, a few booths in the front, sectioned off tables in the back if you want a bit cozier and darker feel. Friendly staff. Good selection of beers. For food, I tried their 'Requisite Nova Scotia Pub Nachos' - 'freshly fried corn tortilla chips, herbs, salsas, good cheese, veggies' their words - $19. They are definitely pretty and colorful topped with shaved radish, cilantro, some kind of hot saucey drizzle, splash of sour cream, few chunks of perhaps feta? Good portion size where I was full, and appreciate that they are meant to be different than your typical nachos, but didn't blow me away. Nothing wrong with them, just left me craving the more boring standard nachos with tons of stretchy cheese on it, peppers, tomato, etc. My friend had the 'Very British Pie' - roasted chicken potpie $16. It was good, rectangular shaped, burnt a bit on the corners, tad watery inside, simple but satisfying enough. We debated trying dessert but were actually full from the beer and entrees. I'd still go back here anytime and try something else on the menu.
