On Saturday's they have free tastings from 12-5. The staff were all super friendly. The place also seemed to be pet friendly as there were two large huskies that showed up too. They had this one bottle of Chardonnay that was so delicious and they explain the wine to you during each tasting. My wife bought 6 Bottles of a Sancerre Wine for $38.00 each from you. We of course kept them properly chilled. Three of the bottles had gone off when we opened them a just a few days later, We advised this business of this problem and received no answer! Previously we had bought 4 bottles of this same wine and all were good. Pretending we do not exist is not going to be a wise solution. Thanks to my yelp buddy Chris C, I was able to find another place in town for FREE wine tastings. I am still a newbie when it comes to wines and I've been told the best way to enjoy and learn what you like is through tasting. I've been buying new bottles one a week but being able to sample 6 at one time for free is great. Their tastings are on Saturdays from 12 - 6. They have a wide variety of wines, all of which are from FRANCE. I didn't particularly love any of the ones I sampled this day, but I did LIKE one of the rose. I did purchase a bottle it was very reasonably priced at $12. The place can be very hidden only a few designated spots and some street parking. It's actually quite nice inside. Really exceptional complimentary tastings on Saturdays. We have loved most of the wines that we've purchased from FCW over the years. It's an awesome, local, family-owned business. A much more personal touch than what you'll find at Specs or Total Wine -- plus they have some stuff that the larger distribution stories simply don't carry. Charming wine spot in the heart of the Village! The owners Phyllis and Tim take pride in this spot and it shows. They have family owned and even organic wines to try...the selection I have not seen in other stores. I came here for the free Saturday afternoon tasting. They also had some delicious cheeses to try. Since I arrived in Houston (3 years ago!) I've been looking for a replacement for Moore Brothers wine, a wonderful shop in New York that imported wine directly from small growers in France. French Country Wines, a small shop on the outskirts of Rice Village is it - almost a perfect analogue. For example, on my first visit they hooked me up with an absolutely killer red Bandol - one of my favorite wines - that I had never seen before. I'm sure future visits will be as successful. We visited yesterday for the free wine tasting . The store is extremely small , which is fine but it was uncomfortable because not one employee spoke a word to us . We were completely ignored the entire time . Part of why we do tastings is to purchase cases and have someone talk us through each wine . The taster didn't comment on one aspect of the region , grape ... etc . Not a word . The woman at computer didn't look up the entire time . Really a 3.5, but can't show it. A neat little place with free tastings on Wednesday eves from 6-8 and Saturdays from 12-6 (?). If you're looking for high-end wines, this isn't the place for you, but if your taste runs to moderately-priced, very drinkable wines with names you're unlikely to have ever heard of, give it a try. We tasted three whites and three reds, only one of which was not worth tasting (and was quickly disgorged into the spittoon); the other five were nice wines. Most of what we tasted ran in the $9-$20 price range. A nice touch was that a food truck (L'es-Car-Go)) was parked outside, serving foods supposedly paired to the wines. Owner/host Tim Smith was very hospitable and helpful, and we ended up buying a very nice Rhone @ $30, one of the most expensive bottles in the store. Came here for the Wednesday free wine tasting from 5-7. What a nice crew that works there! Greeting almost all guests by name, I felt like I was entering a well established dinner party group. The proprietor that was doling out each of the five wines for tasting struck me as some one who has made it in life, and has finally gotten the chance to follow his life long dream. It was fun tasting the wines, and I was so happy to take part in what is clearly his passion. Bonus: tonight they were offering free pieces of king's cake for Three Kings Day. French Country Wines is my favorite wine shop in Houston. Incredibly helpful employees, free tastings twice a week, and delicious wines at a good price point make it so. They source wines form smaller French producers, so you aren't going to find famous Grand Cru and First Growths, but the wines they carry are great and, because they are less well known, well priced. Most of the wines are in the $15-30 range. Being able to try before you buy is a great way to get into wine for people that are just starting to figure out what they do and don't like and a way for those with a developed palate to find some real gems. A hidden gem!! I'm lucky to have stumbled upon this charming establishment on a Saturday during s free wine tasting. I was able to pick up a charming set of trinkets to accompany a bottle of wine as a hostess gift - and I simply couldn't leave without buying two bottles for myself. The staff were knowledgeable and personable - I felt welcome from the moment I walked in. A bargain hunter and a wine snob would both feel at home here- they cater to all. Adorable, cozy wine shop with knowledgeable owners who are true Franco-oenophiles. It's a common misconception that French wines are snooty and expensive - in fact, it can be just the opposite! I'm positive Château Lafite Rothschild is c'est magnifique, but there's a cornucopia of French wines for every budget and taste, which the owners have hand-chosen. As others have mentioned, the free wine tastings are a perfect way to expand your palate. The wines are approachable, with a light mouthfeel - easy to enjoy without food, but pair easily as well. In terms of cost-benefit, the wines are on the 'medium-high' side of the curve. Do note, tasting wines rotate througout the entire stock, so simply join the email list if there's an intriguing, must-try on the list. Tucked in a small business center behind the Armadillo, parking is tight, and it's easy to miss. Inside, they've replicated a chilly, slightly cavernous atmosphere of a cellar. Well curated selection of small/mid capacity vineyards in France. Given the fact the bottles are coming all the way across the pond, I was very impressed at the affordable price range. Also - very knowledgeable staff coupled with free wine tastings. Downside - in order to purchase you have to fill out a form as if you are placing some sort of bulk order. Yelpers; I'm shocked not to find a review of French Country Wines in Houston! Although I frequented most of the brewed and vinous establishments in and around Houston for three decades I'm not in town that often anymore. However on a recent trip into HOU I found French County Wines. It is worth a stop and their principal, Tim, is most knowledgeable of wine, business, wine-business, rural France and all associated matters (check out his winery/vineyard photos & hear his stories - some you have seen in movies). Poor scheduling has not allowed me to attend one of their Saturday or Wednesday wine tastings but you, residents, need to get by there and taste their thoughtful selections. Although my recent drive-by was early in the week Tim gave me an impromptu tasting and much wine conversation. I left impressed with his wine knowledge, selections and business acumen ("... I don't stock much Burgundy; I can't afford to hold it for three years until it comes around."). The wines they stock are from tiny producers and it is difficult to find adequate (English language) background on. However, you can trust Tim to guide you. I am very pleased with mixed case of wines he helped me select. Yes, if you do a ton of research you might find a few of the selections on the web for less. But, are you going mail order wine in this HEAT? A couple of their wines are available at Spec's for less, but I'm telling you that you will make up the difference with their high quality but little-known labels (I did). Plus, they have wines you are simply not going to fine in HOU or ATX. You know Jim Goode's hamburger place? Terrible, terrible experience here. Staff and owners paid little to no attention to us until we pulled out a credit card. We were also the only group of customers in the joint under 70. We were going to buy just a few bottles of wine but then saw the advertisements everywhere that read "10% discount on cases", so we upped our purchase to a case. No receipt was given, even after I asked for one either printed or emailed. Since we Ubered over there, we asked to pick up the wine another day. Picked up the box and found the receipt inside - with NO DISCOUNT. I called and asked the owner Tim about it and he said we bought 3 bottles of sale wine and those don't count. Seriously? While the owner/wife was ringing up our $240 bill why didn't she mention that? Why didn't I get a copy of my receipt in the store when I asked for it? We would NOT have upped our order to 12 bottles if we had known!!! FALSE ADVERTISING. Also, there is no food truck. It is a short and disappointing wine tasting experience. read more
