French Louie was a second choice but the best choice for today's girl's day. The ambience is cute. Food was great, definitely would come back during the week if I can. However, the service is a bit questionable as they weren't as attentive as they could have been with us. Even our server left for the day and there was no transition person to close us out. But besides that the food was really good.
Was looking for a lunch option in Boerum Hill and chose French Louie because they participated in Restaurant Week. It ends up being almost $10 cheaper than ordering a la carte. It was decently full on a Tuesday afternoon. It's bigger than expected since there's seats around the corner from the back and there's a patio in the back. It looked like most of the other guests didn't order from Restaurant Week. Some of them were sharing salads that looked really big for an appetizer. I ordered chilled corn vichyssoise and burger royale. My friend ordered frenchie salad and moules normande. Our portions weren't as crazy what we saw other people get. I like how my chilled corn vichyssoise is creamy and refreshing without being too cold or sweet. The radish, watervress, and pickled okra provided different textures and flavors with each sip. They also sprinkle chives and some oil on top to add more layers. My friend's frenchie salad came out to be a few large pieces of lettuce leaves spread out with dressing and toppings added on top. She found it a bit tiring to need to cut up the large leaves, and the ratio of toppings with greens is off. She found it to be too much dressing and bacon. There were small bits of something we're not sure of, might be mustard seeds. We like how there's a small crunch and some earthy flavor, not too strong. For mains, my burger royale came out medium rare as requested. It was smaller than expected but with a double patty, the portions are sufficient. I like how they used raclette cheese which is more unique and comes with a nice cheese pull. The french dressing added to the bun was a little too wet and oily but tolerable. I like how the lettuce is shredded which helps distribute it amongst bites. The fries are thin which is also what I prefer more. They were slightly too brown for me. It's so funny the way they pile up the fries. I can't imagine myself finishing it but will be disappointed if it's a smaller pile. Many pieces were short which made it hard to pick up. Overall decent portions and flavors. I'd be open to coming again if I'm looking for a restaurant in the area.
This is within walking distant from NYU. Small, cute restaurant serving French cuisine with very friendly staff to be patience with you, especially because the menu is packed with French. I had a lot of google translate to do to ensure that I was ordering something that I would eat. Presentation was fantastic with very unique flavors. The shrimp and fish were both very fresh and tasty. We did a bottle of pinot noir wine from WA, very matching with the meats and seafood that we selected. Will definitely come back and recommend for people in the area.
A very cute restaurant with complimentary coat/bag check! The outdoor patio would be nice on a good day but I came here on a rainy/chilly day! I was torn between the smoked trout scramble and the Nicoise but without olives since I'm not a fan but on the waiter's suggestion I ordered the Nicoise. Not a knock on the waiter at all but the olive aioli that he said was on it tasted way too olive-y for me so I had to send it back and ordered the scramble instead! I also had a small piece of the socca bread and wasn't a fan. There wasn't a lot of smoked trout in it but pairing it with the hash brown or spread on the toast was the best move for flavor profile. Overall a decent experience but I wouldn't rush to come back!
It's been a decade, and it's time. 10 years of meals at French Louie, and they deserve the fifth star. I don't know if they've changed, or if I have, or if the world has...perhaps all three. But here are the facts: 1. The restaurant is still adorable, with a gorgeous backyard (go dine out there in the incoming wonderful weather). 2. Brunch is very tasty, and they allow you to make RESERVATIONS. Like a civilized adult.* (You do eggs well, Louie, and any way I'd like them. The scrambles are lovely (and surprisingly generous portions), the soft boiled egg on the avocado toast is impeccable (quite a small portion), and pairs well with the pickled tomatoes. And when I spring for the Eggs Louie I enjoy the poached, runny goodness that leaks out all over the croissant/crab combo. If you prefer a heavy brunch and hollandaise isn't enough, there's fried chicken cordon bleu and double burgers topped with raclette there just for you.) 3. Dinner is delicious. From soups (the lentil and sweet potato right now is dreamy) to salads (how can you not love the "frenchie"?) to starters (chicken liver pate FTW) to whatever main you rock (excellent steak frites, a nice grilled fish, quality pasta - the lumache right now is bangin'), the food has become far more consistent than it was in the early days. 4. Their kids meals are not cheap at $22 per, but they are also extremely substantial portions of well-cooked food that is not an afterthought. The kids' steak frites is a bavette cooked to your liking, with enough fries for the table and a salad that my daughter has actually started eating. It may be the best deal in the place. 5. The prices cement its place in this neighborhood's desperately underserved category of gorgeous, just-a-smidge-fancy date spots. When French Louie first opened, I was admittedly a little put out by the prices. Unfortunately for the world, this has almost become one of the more affordable spots around to get a high quality dinner. ** While I still wouldn't say I'm deeply in love, I have a deep affection for your lively bar, your picturesque patio, and your beautiful food. I'll always carry a torch for your dear departed sister, Buttermilk Channel, but we can assuage our grief together. ___ *When I am going to pay too much for eggs, I appreciate knowing when I will be able to eat them. I appreciate knowing the exact moment at which I will be able to soothe my awful hangover. It makes a lot of difference in whether or not I'm just going to cook them myself, or come in and ruin my day with morningtime cocktails. **Why do $17 cocktails feel downright cheap right now? What sort of fresh hell are we living in?
We came for brunch when it was still nice out so we were able to sit outside in their beautiful backyard. How I miss the days when the sun just shines on you in the current cold frigid freeze. I got the smoked trout scramble. It was tasty without feeling too greasy/oily. Two of my friends split the pancakes and burger with fries . The order of fries was enough to feed the whole table. What a wonderful place for brunch. I would love to come back for dinner.
Lovely option in the area, with plenty of seating. The moules-frite was what I originally came for and it did not disappoint. Also had the po boy and a salad verte. Both were delicious. This place hit a nostalgic-diner feel that I miss in nyc. Food with real ingredients and solid service as well. A time capsule of a time when food was a ceremony for nutrition.
The food was pretty good, but I have to judge a restaurant by its price and type of cuisine. This is supposed to be a nicer French restaurant but it was kind of expensive for what I got. I just didn't really like any of it but then again French food isn't my thing, I was trying something new. Service was excellent though, out waiter was on top of everything. Atlantic ave is filled with so many wonderful restaurants, knowing this I think I went in with my hopes up to be honest. The atmosphere was cozy and the place was crowded for a Monday night. We were seated in the backyard which felt like a hidden nook away from the hustle and bustle which was a nice way to wind down after a long day. unfortunately, the cozy ambiance wasn't enough to make up for the meal. Normally I love when my meat has a bit of that charred flavor and that's what I was expecting but these prawns just seemed to taste off. I was not a fan of the head still being on but I took it off and ate around it. Still wasn't a fan, the flavor wasn't doing the prawns justice. It left a weird after taste and the rest had to go to waste. The lamb shank on the other hand, was cooked perfectly! The meat was falling off the bones and tasted flavorful. Loved it! I will say the sweetness of the couscous was too overpowering, especially with the raisins. Personally don't think it paired well with the juicy savory lamb shank, separately I didnt mind them. I'm glad I was able to try it, have a cozy evening and explore more of the strip of restaurants on Atlantic. Will I be going back ? Most likely not.
Such an amazing and delightful first time experience which just happened to be during Restaurant Week. I enjoyed everything about French Louie as did my friend. I made a reservation for indoors but once we caught sight of their beautiful patio coupled by the gorgeous weather, we asked to sit outdoors. Service was highly attentive and our server was pleasant and hospitable. We both ordered a crisp Rose wine from Provence to start things off. Without asking, the server offered a taste to ensure we Iiked it. Restaurant Week will be extended through August 31st at French Louie (hint: check them out) and although you are welcomed to order off the menu, we decided on the 3 courses for $45. For starters, we both selected the Salade Verte: lettuce, salted cucumbers, radishes, olive oil breadcrumbs tossed in a tangy Vinaigrette dressing. For Main, I chose the Hake (seafood similar to cod) with Gigante beans on a bed of charred cabbage. It was excellently prepared: flavorful and light. I detected vinegar which was somewhat pungent. Still, very good. My friend selected the brick Chicken. This was a large (r) portion than the Hake and looked delicious. She loved it. . We chose different desserts--my friend went with the Olive Oil Cake while my choice was the Spiced Pot de Creme. My dessert was decadent, similar to Mousse and accompanied by two Vanilla Madeleine. Absolutely delicious.. We really enjoyed our dinner and time spent at French Louie. Great atmosphere (gorgeous in fact), food and service. Who can ask for anything more?
I've always had a nice time here. We stop in for brunch, usually after visiting horseman antiques, and I always get the steak tartare. They also have a zero proof gin martini which as someone quit drinking is a much welcomed option and it's pretty good. The staff are absolutely lovely and the lighting in there is great. Open and inviting. I've seen families dine here and dates. The potato side dish during brunch is pretty awesome I was shocked. Salads are hearty as well.
I'd heard of this place for ages but never got around to coming until recently. It's a cute spot, walks the line between date night and neighborhood staple in its vibe and crowd. The waiter was nice and attentive, chatty in a good way. I ordered the slow roasted lamb ribs were pretty darn tasty. They genuinely fall off the bone in such a way you feel like you're eating duck almost, the crispy skin and fat with this succulent meat -- it's a lot! Indulgent. It's tasty though, I even liked the lemon yogurt which is like two things I normally avoid. My buddy had steak frites which were also cooked nicely. He also had a pretty solid old fashioned, though I opted for wine. All in all a memorable meal. If I lived closer I'd consider going back more often, but as is I feel like there's a few other options I'd opt to get back to sooner. But it's good! Don't get me wrong.
My friends and I went for Restaurant Week (3-course dinner for $45) and everything was beyond our expectations. The service was good, and the ambiance was cozy. They have an outdoor patio that would be so nice on a summer's eve. We dined inside since the outdoor was full. The restaurant week options were good. We had mixed diets (pescatarians, halal, vegetarians, omnivores) and there was something for everyone. We ordered the artichokes to share, but I got: -appetizer: salade verte (radish, salted cucumber, pickled shallot, tirokafteri & olive oil breadcrumbs) -main: moules frites normande (cider, leeks, mustard & crème fraîche) -dessert: spiced chocolate pot de créme Everything was delicious, and best yet, the sizes were so big! What a steal!

If you'd like to take out a date and enjoy some good food but don't want to be bothered with hearing your dates stories, oh boy do I have a great place for you! I have to admit, the food here is pretty good but it is truly too loud in here. They also sit tables very close to each other so if space is what you desire, you won't get that here. We typically order mussels in the traditionally served white wine / red wine / champagne sauces so the mussels in a mustard sauce here were definitely something that we were looking forward to and they were truly delicious but too heavy. The portion size is also pretty small -- not like the typical pot that you get elsewhere. The smoked sardines were very tasteful but you only get 2 of them. The 28 day aged steak was ordered medium but it came out as well done. I don't like sending food back so I just chowed it down. Flavor wise it was ok, but at $50.00 for a 12 - 14 oz. cut, I feel that it should have been larger. The steak came with a side of red rice and kale which was delicious. Overall, the food was okay but it's simply too loud here. read more

Came here without a reservation on a Monday night around 7-8pm. The dining room was full, but the staff offered us the option of sitting at a small table in between the dining room and bar area, which was shared by other diners. The ambience here is dimly lit, simple and modern. The service was polite and efficient. We decided to have the tuna and le grand socca for our entrees. The entrees were served shortly after we ordered. My boyfriend was happy with his tuna dish, although the serving of tuna was on the smaller side. It was accompanied with cauliflower, and a sauce that was delicious. I was also happy with my entree, le grand socca. It consisted of a large piece of flatbread made from chickpeas, with hummus, radish, green salad, and pickled vegetables. The flatbread had a strong chickpea flavor, and went well with the pickled vegetables and hummus. The edges of the bread were a bit hard though. We enjoyed our dining experience here and would gladly come again. read more

Kids don't belong in midnight movies, hookah bars,S & M dungeons or French Louie. My husband and I were looking for a non-kid friendly restaurant since we wanted an adult meal out without our lovely kids. That's a tall order in Brownstone Brooklyn. This seemed like the place for an adult meal on a Sat evening...until we heard 'em. Not one, but two little ones, talking loudly in the yelpy way kids do from the beginning of our cocktail through to dessert. Please peeps, 95% of the restaurants are kid friendly; please take your kids to those and leave some safe space for an adult only eve. I was with my amazing lovely kids all day and I love them and love yours too, but come on! Food was excellent. There didn't seem to be any specials when we went, or at least our attentive waiter didn't inform us of any. Husband said it was one of the five best meals he's ever had! He had the duck. I only noticed one vegetarian entree on the menu (Socca-something).I ordered it. It was interesting but just OK. We'll be back again and we wont bring our kids to a restaurant that isn't meant for kids. Please save this supposedly safe space for adults and we'll do the same. read more

I had a fantastic meal here! Don't let my (somewhat) trim figure fool you-I love to eat...and as I just had a wedding and the holidays, I've been packing away some delicious food these past months. Still, I can't remember the last time I had a meal I enjoyed as much as my meal at French Louie. Maybe it was in the details, like the delicious white sauce, that definitely had mustard in it-yum, that the oysters came in popping yet complimenting the jam on the bread it's served with. Or maybe it was the cozy, intimate interior, or that I was with wonderful company (my awesome husband!). Or maybe it was that we weren't paying for the meal as we had compiled money we got from Christmas gifts from family to treat ourselves (jk it wasn't that although I'm sure it didn't hurt). Whatever it was, this is definitely a new favorite of ours in the neighborhood, and although it's pricey, we're excited to come back....hopefully before next Christmas. read more

I don't often find myself in Brooklyn on a weekend but if you do definitely stop by French Louie for brunch. Overall a great experience food and drinks were good, staff was friendly, expedient, and adhering to covid guidelines. Prices were agreeable and portion sizes were generous. Prior to going to French Louie I'd been living wrong by not bruleeing French toast. I'll never go back to that. The house made jam and crepe fresh accompanying it were great. That being said underneath the perfectly brown and crunchy topping the toast itself felt too soggy to the point of almost having a doughy texture. I'm not sure if the solution to that is soaking for less time, frying for longer or using something other than brioche as the base but if fixed that's the bet brunch plate in all 5 boroughs. The Eggs Louie with crab and Hollandaise was good! I'm not sure it needed to be a croissant on the bottom and would've preferred an English muffin. The fries were perfect. We also got the spicy chicken sausage and I was happy to see them in patty rather than link form. Also they were actually spicy which was great. A lot of places say spicy sausage and then it just isn't that. I did have to add a little bit of salt because the spice in some bites was overpowering and all you could taste so it felt a little out of balance in that respect. Overall everything was good! I was pretty happy with my brunch selection of French Louie, as recommended by my Brooklyn buddy, Pete D. I made reservations a couple weeks out and a table was ready for us when we arrived. The restaurant is bright and airy and has a beautiful outdoor patio. Our server was fantastic and all of the serving staff seemed to be working together in harmony, filling waters, taking drink orders when needed, etc. We started with the Everything Mary which was very solid. There were so many delicious-sounding options for brunch that my husband and I decided to just share a bunch of plates. To start, we went with the Frenchie salad and avocado toast. Both were delicious and a great, not-too-heavy start to the meal. Then, we went on to share an order of the cordon bleu. Oh boy. We probably should have thought more about this decision as we had just spent the previous night sampling chicken wings all over Brooklyn. This plate is definitely best when shared as I can't imagine how anyone could eat an entire plate on one's own. It's super heavy and dare I say a little too rich. I love fried chicken but probably wouldn't order this again. Overall, really enjoyed my experience at French Louie for brunch and would like to check out dinner sometime. read more

I've booked this restaurant for our 2nd Wedding anniversary dinner. I must say it was a perfect little spot to celebrate and local to us too. We got greeted by a very pleasant girl on our arrival and wished happy anniversary which was sweet. We got offered a table outside which was perfect as the evening was rather pleasant. We decided to celebrate with a bottle of bubbly, oysters and fois Gras to start with followed by steak and moules. The food was very tasty although the menu could have been expanded a little bit. Our waitress was excellent. The highlight of our dinner was definitely the banana ice cream profiteroles, absolutely amazing! And they served it with a candle for us to celebrate. Cute gesture. Things my girlfriend (who, let me say, is extremely picky) said at our dinner: For ambiance this place is an 11. (Spinal Tap reference!) Oh my god this is good (Buckwheat Pappardelle). We have to bring my parents to this place. This place is sooo cute. We went on the first night that they opened cause it coincided when we wanted to go out and we were curious (we both like Buttermilk Channel a lot). Both the food and service was excellent. Everything we got was great plus we saw some dishes come out that we were like damn, that's for next time (especially the soup!). It's a perfect date spot but I could also see it being an easy place to take the family or friends as well. Prices aren't that bad (we had two drinks each and dessert, an appetizer to share plus two entrees and it was around 100). I would highly recommend the Flounder. It was cooked perfect and the blood orange is an excellent touch. Also it's always a great touch when the owner comes over and thanks us for coming out. The guy was really nice and made us feel super comfortable. All in all, a great experience. read more
~*~Happy 500th Review To Me~*~ Come here for a birthday celebration and we both loved it! Being a huge fan of Buttermilk Channel, I was so excited to visit the higher end sister restaurant. Charlotte, our waitress, gave us excellent recommendations throughout the night. We both ordered French 75 (blend of champagne, lemon and cognac) to start off the night. For entrees, we ordered the Bavette Steak and the Duck Au Poivre. I know they are very well known for their steak, but I personally loved the duck. The blood orange marmalade was an excellent touch to the dish. As for dessert, I was able to pull Charlotte aside earlier that night and tell her to add a birthday candle to our dessert. I was originally really disappointed when I heard that their famous orange caramel & pistachio profiterole was replaced by their gram cracker s'mores profiteroles. However, Charlotte made it work for us. Instead of using the pine ice cream (which is supposed to have a more woody campfire taste), we were able to swap it out with pistachio ice cream...and it came out fantastic! Very charming place for lunch/brunch with a backyard patio that would be perfect for al fresco dining. Love the menu, it has a little something for everyone so it's a crowd-pleaser. Avocado Tartine is an awesome version of avocado toast with the addition of pickled green tomatoes (I love a good punch of pickle) on really great bread piled high with avocado, which almost justifies the price tag. Order a "le socca" or two, I've never had one before and LOVED it. Savory thin chickpea pancake loaded up with toppings, both versions are delicious. Can't go wrong with the burger royale either, and order an extra side of fries bc they disappear fast. Skip the grilled trout po'boy, it was pretty fishy and the bread was too hard. The s'mores profiteroles were a fun way to end the meal, who doesn't like ice cream? Profiteroles are always a mess to eat, but I'm not even mad that I got sticky caramel chocolate sauce all over my spoon and hands because their version with the smoked marshmallow was worth it. Bonus: if you're lucky, the secret in-house-artist/unidentified employee will draw you a French Louie on your takeout bag. Make a reservation and your brunch friends will love you for it. read more

French Louie is one of my new favorite restaurants in Brooklyn. And that's not that much of a surprise, considering the pedigree of the owners and chefs (most notably Buttermilk Channel). It's not an every week type of place, but more of a semi-special occasion spot. They have tons of seating inside and out (including a gigantic backyard). I thought it was going to be classy to a fault, but it was actually surprisingly casual. We were originally offered a table by the door, but decided to go outside, but it was the most humid day of the year, and they were nice enough to bring us back inside at a nicer table in the back. The waitstaff was overall amazing. Not to be outdone, the food is also top notch. Started out with the grilled foie gras (because why the hell not?). It was served with pickled grapes and fennel. The foie gras was incredibly rich and needed nothing because it was the best I've had in a long time. But nevertheless, all of the added flavors really boosted the dish (especially the grapes). Great for sharing. All of the entrees sounded amazing, but we eventually decided to share the grilled trout and the Bavette steak frites. The steak was slightly overcooked (more medium than medium rare), but the flavors were excellent. Great fries too. And the salad, while completely unnecessary since I'm a carnivore, was actually a nice addition; it wasn't just a few pieces of lettuce thrown together, but seemed thought through. The grilled trout was a much lighter dish, with a flaky with a crispy skin. It was also served with these delicious smoked fingerling potatoes. They had a crispy exterior and a smooth silky interior. Kind of like smashed potatoes that weren't smashed. It was all topped off with some trout roe, which was just the icing on the trout. For dessert, we had the profiteroles, which... let me just say, save room in your stomach. Pistachio ice cream over half of a cream puff shell. Three of them. Yummy. They also have some interesting cocktails, and a great whiskey and apertif list. One of the bartenders actually came over and gave me a personal recommendation on an armagnac when I couldn't decide on my last drink. All in all, French Louie is doing everything right. ~*Review #500!!*~ That's what I'm talkin' about! Been a fan of Buttermilk Channel, so I was eager to try their fancier French sister. The space of the restaurant is HUGE, and toes the line between fancy and casual. On one hand, you have candlelit tables and nice lighting. On the other hand, you have cartoon stencils and a cartoon mural on the wall. It makes for a nice, chill vibe. The place was quite packed, and we were given the choice of a table in the front by the bar or outside in the backyard. We picked the backyard, which is spacious and beautiful, but it was so humid that day that we changed our minds and asked to sit inside. The servers were very nice and understanding, and even gave us a better table than before! The menu is pretty awesome, and we were hard-pressed to choose. We started with the grilled foie gras, which was amazing and probably one of the best I've had. It was served with pickled grapes, shaved fennel, and rhubard, and while those were great, the unadorned foie gras itself would have been perfect on its own. For mains, we shared the Bavette steak frites and grilled trout. Sort of a good offset, one heavy dish, one light dish. The steak frites were done well, although the steak was more medium than medium rare as requested. It was still really tasty. And the fries were spot on. The grilled trout was very light and crispy. It was served with fingerling potatoes that had the most amazing smoke flavor, cucumbers and radishes, and trout roe. We finished with the profiteroles with cardamon caramel sauce and pistachio ice cream for dessert. Incredibly sweet and indulgent. Definitely satisfied my sweet tooth! Service was great throughout, and while it's pricier than Buttermilk Channel, it's definitely worth the extra $$$. Definitely going on my list of favorite places! read more
One of the bet spots in Brooklyn - definitely my favorite brunch in Boerum Hill. The indoor area is cute, but the back garden is magical (on an nice day, of course!) For dinner, the steak frites are incredible. I'm not usually one for fries, and I never leave a single one behind when I order this. For brunch, get the socca! It's a chickpea based pancake with an egg and tasty cauliflower salad on top. I typically also get the buckwheat ricotta crepes to share with the table, because when brunch I like a few bites of sweet. The avocado toast is also great, and if you're gluten free they'll put the avocado mash and toppings on the socca chickpea pancake because that doesn't have gluten. I would order it that way for fun without needing to avoid gluten because the socca packs in interesting spices. Try to make a reservation though because there is typically a wait! read more

Delicious food and great service! I've been here 2 x in the past month, once for brunch, once for a mid day lunch. I had a great crab meat Benedict at brunch. It was delicious! Happened to come across this place while staying in downtown Brooklyn and it was the most pleasant surprise. The food was incredible. Each bite of our dinner felt like a new experience. The different flavors and textures of the meals blended so perfectly together. We ended up coming back for brunch a few days later and once again it did not disappoint. read more

Does the garden have shelter and heat lamps?
Yes, there is retractable roof that lets sunshine in when it's closed and keeps rain out when the weather turns. There are also plenty of heat lamps to keep you warm in the colder months.
Been calling this place, no answer. My boyfriend's birthday is Jan.1st so I wanted to start his day with a "BdayBRUNCH" do they definitely serve Brunch on New Years Day (Wed)? I heard they do but just want to make sure & make a reservation.
