We've lived in this area for a minute and finally decided to have brunch here. We arrived around 1:30 and were seated right away. Let's get into it! Service was attentive and quick. Two people held down the entire restaurant. Seating, serving and bussing tables were all done by them. Ambiance felt comfortable and laid back and the 2nd most important thing outside of the food are the gender neutral bathrooms which were clean and well lit! The food was delicious and filling and the weird things that stood out to me was the fresh squeezed OJ and the side salad which was so nicely seasoned and the OJ was bangin! We have been going there for years, and the people working there have always been fantastic. They remember your name, preferences, and feels like family. I thought I reviewed this place back in 2018, but think my review disappeared. Anyways, as mentioned, came here back in 2018 for dinner and never went back. I can't remember why, except the fact I wasn't blown away by the food. I came back here because it was easy to get to without worrying about everything else, so decided to book a resy for brunch. Got the following items: Croissant - good Steak Tartare - I wish they had more of kick in here. I added loads of pepper, but I appreciate it was chopped and not ground, because I hate ground. Steak Frites - good Oyster - good Lobster roll - good ratio, it could have been reworked a bit and didn't really care for their take on this east coast classic. I added pepper in this too. I didn't even realize they had a cellar back in 2018, but we sat there and it was a bit cramp, but better than nothing. Service was good. read more

We just emigrated from Chelsea Manhattan and are relatively new to the hood. My husband and I love this relaxed but kind of serious bistro. It's our new neighborhood go-to! My Personal favorites are the Steak frites and Fois Gras. The garden is super sweet on these gloriously beautiful late summer evenings. We love the old school real restaurateur feeling of the place. Not intending to come back here. The interior is nice, but that's about where the good stuff ended. Came here for brunch we were the first guests. Coffee first: Oh, you only have no oat, soy or other non-dairy milk? Must be the last place in Brooklyn that didn't get the memo. Ordered espresso instead, not very memorable. We placed our order maybe around 12:15 PM, after a pretty generous amount of time the appetizers started trickling in - and by trickling I mean one at a time, and one of them was missed entirely (they brought it out after we complained, strange excuse, something about the chef having a printing issue....). Pate was kind of whatever, came with laughable amounts of bread. More bread was brought, but a different kind, and not overly fresh. Didn't try the other appetizers (oysters or mussels, and steak tartare, both not my thing). So far this could have all been in the ballpark, but our mains arrived approximately an hour (!) after we ordered - and the place was mostly empty in the beginning. I tried the burger first, which was unconvincing. Stale bread that crumbled in a not overly appetizing way, too tall to really eat in a civilized fashion, no stand-out flavor or texture. Then the Banh Mi: wouldn't really call this a Banh Mi, it was a ton of meat on a baguette with shredded pickles (why?). I guess the prices aren't excessive by general standards, but considering the quality of the food and the sleepy service I'd say it was a bust. The one redeeming element: the background playlist was decent, yacht-rocky with some Steely Dan sprinkled in, I can find joy in that. read more

The things I miss most about Brooklyn are the local restaurants that you can walk to. We were invited to this establishment by a great friend of mine. Now I see why she chose this place. The ambiance is intimate also not for the little ones for no kid's meals on the menu. Non the less we chose the burger for our boys it was a big-size burger that they split with some fries. I indulge in one, very huge but very tasty. The fries were well prepared and seasoned. My wife had the poulet aux morilles which is a chicken dish. By now you should know that she is a picky eater. But she enjoyed her meal so I know this place is it. My friend had a special mushroom meal that the chef prepared for her. They need to add it to the menu. I can honestly say this place has it from service to the food it is a must. Bedford Stuyvesant has come a long way. Kudos to this establishment for representing fine cuisine and amazing hospitality. This is a perfect restaurant if you want quiet and are interested in being able to chat with someone and be able to hear what they are saying. An intimate and quiet setting with delicious food. My personal favorite is the steak tartare appetizer. On Christmas I tried the mushroom risotto which was delicious and my friend had the chicken. We both took home leftovers. The wine list is divine and the prices are shockingly reasonable. Brian, one of the waiters could not be more perfect. He appears when you need him and disappears when you want to talk to your companion. Yes, it's a little pricey but worth it. read more

The epitome of gentrification's ills, and on Malcom X Blvd no less. The entire experience was disorienting and unimpressive, with a whiff of liberal racism. We, the only people of color in the place (aside from the cooks, as far as we could tell) asked to sit outside on a lovely day. The backyard space was filthy and mosquito-laden, so after looking around in shock that they considered it fit to seat people, we moved inside and proceeded to experience the most lackadaisical service imaginable. Our requests were not remembered, our food and drinks were placed at the end of our table as if we might contaminate the hand that served us, and we had to chase down the server, who was very attentive to all the tables around us (think about how dramatic the difference in service has to be for us to notice it!). After all this they had the audacity to serve us mediocre food. Exhausting and unoriginal. The whole experience re-invogorated my fight against gentrification. I also went for my birthday back in October and everything was sooo yummy. My mom and I went last night and had rose, the red snapper and the lamb chops. Literally still drooling thinking about it. I'd rate L'Antagoniste four and a half stars. My wife and I came here for dinner on a weeknight. We made a reservation but I think it may have been possible to walk in earlier in the evening. First off, the have a tremendous wine. Only a few wines by the glass but pages and pages of wines by the bottle with a great variety of types falling over a wide price range. They had a handful of beers which were all craft with a fair share of local options. We started with one of the daily specials - an asparagus dish with a hollandaise. The asparagus were quite thick and slow cooked which gave them a texture that reminded us of hearts of palm. The sauce was great. For the main course, we shared another special - seared scallops with veggies - and the steak and frites. The scallops were outstanding and seemed to be a pretty popular choice amongst patrons. It came with a wonderful sauce that I ordered extra bread for to wipe up. We ordered the steak medium rare but it was served a little past medium. The frites were crispy and well seasoned yet still retained a bit starchiness to them. For dessert, we shared the passion fruit cake which was served with some ice cream. The cake has a very long lasting flavor which made it great for savoring bite after bite. They had one gender neutral restroom with a sink looked on the outside of the restroom making it convenient to wash your hands without having to go inside the restroom. Cozy French neighborhood bistro that makes you feel at home. The owner Amadeus is usually there and goes out of his way to make you comfortable. Maya is the sommelier and since we are usually in right when they open is waiting on us. Her wine recs have always exceeded our expectations. We usually dine with our 11 month old baby who sometimes needs extra attention. Maya has even helped us with the baby while we finished our last bites. The food is very good. We usually start with oysters which are very fresh and served with a classic mignonette. Last night we has the appetizer on special which was bone marrow, fried frog legs, escargot and black garlic. We completed by our meal sharing the Contre Filet (12 oz dry aged NY strip steak) and Roasted Hen of the Woods. All pictured here so you can SEE how delicious it was. Environment was unsanitary-- saw staff using bare hands to handle bread right after handling dirty dishes without washing hands (it's an open kitchen so you can see in). This restaurant gave you the feeling of a tucked away small restaurant. The staff seemed to know their diners well and there seemed to be repeat customers. This is a great place for a romantic dinner or intimidate friends/family gathering. I dined in the outdoor seating area since I'm indoor was fully booked (will make a reservation moving forward). I had the l'Orange duck it was sweet, but a little too sweet for my taste. Definitely the best part were the mussels. I definitely want to come back to try other items on the menu. The vibe of the restaurant is really worth it! Service was impeccable. Our server was quite attentive to our needs. Bonus: Towards the end of my meal I discovered a slug behind me lol! I have visited L'Antagoniate several times over the years, most recently yesterday. My friend and I sat in the garden and enjoyed every bite of what we ordered. The steak tartare was perfectly salted and served with a raw egg on top. Oh my goodness, it was unbelievably delicious. My main was the hamburger. Very juicy, though more medium well than medium, but I was still pleased. The fries were perfectly fried. I asked for a side of aioli and received a decent portion (my type of place, given the proper respect of condiments!). Along with a glass of wine, our Wednesday evening catch up dinner was just what I needed to punctuate this week. Oh, and my friend ordered the duck breast. I believe she had the duck breast and fries. It looked delish. I've also enjoyed the steak frites, mussels, oysters, bone marrow and other deliciousness. In the past I've attended two dinner parties here, with about 8 or so guests. I've also been here on a date. Again, everything I've eaten has been delectable. I have been here couple times and I come back here every time for the mussels and their bread. I don't have much experience with French cuisine, but I can't think of any reason to not to love their mussels. I'm not a good enough of a writer to describe the experience, but you gotta try it. I try different entree every time, and the burger and chicken entrĺee were very pleasing, and I'd definitely order them again. I was here last week most recently and had passionfruit cake with coconut icecream. It was sprinkled with toasted(?) coconut flakes which added more texture and richer flavor to the whole dessert. The flavor of the passionfruit and coconut was very synergistic. The waiters are extremely quick, smart, and kind here. My husband and I returned to L'Antagoniste for the first time since the pandemic for his birthday last month and the food was as spectacular as I remembered it to be. We don't live in this part of Brooklyn so made the trip solely to celebrate his birthday at this special hidden gem. We went for it and ordered decadently as you should to celebrate a birthday! We started with a dozen oysters and I had the incredible "Zhee Hamburger" perfectly juicy and medium rare with duck confit on top. It came with frites and I also had a salad. My husband had the insane special entree - perfect for a birthday: filet mignon with seared foie gras on top! We got a special but well-valued chateauneuf du pape. Pro tip: the more affordable bottles have a higher markup than the pricier bottles. They are a great value so go ahead and treat yourself and pay $20-$25 more for a truly fantastic wine! Very unique spot in Bed Stuy and definitely not the experience I was expecting. Lets start with the place, I came here for a birthday dinner with my dad and a friend. They seated us immediately and the service was pretty quick, food came out quickly too. The space has lots of small wooden tables like a french restaurant but what was nice was that there was a little more space at each table so you didnt feel like you were going to knock things over all the time. They have a lovely black and white photograph wallpaper which reminds me of old school New York restaurants. The food- They do work with local farms and have a list on the wall. They also sell wine by the bottle and its relatively inexpensive, we got a sauv blanc which was about $20. What they do with the food is poetry though, the cheese souffle came with a cheese ice cream, the broth of the mussels was good enough to be from France and the pate comes with a small balloon of cotton candy on the side. I wasnt the biggest fan of the steak tartare, but it was soft and really well prepared, the clafutis tasted excellent, but was slightly on the stodgier side. The wait staff was really good with us, made good recommendations and provided really great service. It does get busy at night though so I do recommend a reservation. They accept cc too and have a lovely patio in the back. I'll return for special occasions, thanks l'antagoniste, for a lovely evening! read more

They were so good, probably the best tartare we've had, and the mussels soup is a really good dipping for their bread. I'm with Jack C below - idk what happened last night, but that was the most bizarre dinner I've ever had (also Valentine's Day). We didn't get the Prix Fixe menu, but did get a starter, main, and dessert. The bisque was NOT bisque ... it was watery and not warm as you'd expect a soup to be. We legit finished a full bottle of wine - sipping slowly - waiting for our entree. Probably would have ordered more wine if we weren't completely starving when the entree came and then ignored for close to an hour after which someone finally took our dessert order and rushed us out. We got our appetizer over an hour after sitting down. It was soooo slow. The duck I got was RARE like still alive basically ... the chicken breast my boyfriend got, while the thigh was good the breast was dry. He's a line cook and couldn't believe they served me the duck the way they did. We threw the leftovers on a skillet when we got home and it's good, but still WTF. The veggies were also steamed, not seasoned, and under cooked. Close to MIDNIGHT (we got there at 9:45PM) another waiter comes around basically rushing us and telling us if we wanted dessert we needed to order now because they're closing down. We had been sitting w empty plates for close to 30 minutes! Service was HORRIBLE. There was a huge table of old rich people that the whole wait staff was waiting on hand and foot while neglecting everyone else ... we wanted to hit a cocktail bar down the block after this, not spend over two hours at this place. I asked for a box as well and that was basically thrown at me with somewhat of an attitude im assuming bc it was so freaking late but TRUST we did not want to be there either! I saw so many staff members, but only one guy really serving - like he needed help. This one lady - legit all I saw her do was keep bringing in MORE Valentine's Day balloons into the main dining area like dumping so many balloons many of which had long strings and then the one dude actually serving is instructed to go around cutting the strings that are too long and now in everyone's face - when what he should have been focusing on was serving everyone that's been sitting there for hours... idk what half of the staff was doing but that server needed help. Also the lady pouring water was abrasive and rude like slammed the glasses down on the table and looked completely put off when I said thank you so much ... it was overall just WEIRD AF. To top it all off - someone that had to be part of their staff bc it wasn't a constant smell, smelled like they'd been rolling around in a barn. Like a legit old, wet moldy one at that ... with a dirty dog. I felt sick to my stomach every time the smell wafted by. It was terrible. The burger looked like it was probably good, but other than that I would never suggest this place to anyone. I am genuinely confused on the good reviews. They have very decently priced bottles of wine which is also a plus, but not enough of a plus to go back. The seating is also hard as a rock (like the bench seating) and tables are too low compared to the bench height so it's like idk really awkward you can't cross your legs or really do anything. I wanted to like this place - we had been eyeing it forever and it's very close to our apt, but they seemed extremely off last night. Wish we had gone somewhere else for Valentines Day. There are so many good restaurants close by and more decently priced as well - hit up Dick and Jane's, Chez Oskar, or Trad Room for food and cocktails - Therapy Wine Bar for wine!! read more
