Great place to run, swim, and relax.

As a person from Southern California that grew up with sandy beaches, I absolutely love this park and was happy to discover it! Parking is only $3 per car and there are plenty of spots to park. What I like is that, even on a Saturday during the peak of Summer, it's not unbearably crowded like LA beaches. The water is very pleasant, just be careful not to good too deep because there are definitely sudden drop-offs. As someone else mentioned in another review, it's nice because it feels like you are in a rural area yet you are only about 10 minutes away from downtown Vancouver and about 20 minutes from downtown Portland. Additional note: I recommend this park over Kelley Point. That park was dirtier and there was a rotting seal or a very large fish, wasn't sure, on the beach.

Driving a few miles east of Vancouver, you quickly enter a quiet rural countryside. It's amazing that you can pass from an industrial port into farmland and wildlife refuge in such a short period of time. It is in this area, close to the city but isolated from the metropolis, that you will find Frenchman's Bar Park. This part lies across the river from Sauvie Island, just north of Kelly Point Park and the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia. There's an unobstructed view of the Columbia, nice sandy beaches, playground equipment, views of the mountains, an abandoned barn, and plenty of walking trails. It's a really nice park! There are a number of parking lots and starting points, so I imagine there's a lot to explore along the banks of the river. I checked out most of the north portion, but there's a paved trail that heads over to Vancouver lake, as well as a number of unimproved trails that head off into the woods here and there. If you're looking for a relaxing alternative to Sauvie Island and a great place to watch a sunset, you could do a lot worse than Frenchman's Bar.

If you…read morelook at it on the map it's in the middle of a bustling area near the highway and the mall, but because of where the entrance is located, you wouldn't necessarily notice it on a daily basis. There is a large open, grassy area at the front so you could play some sports or games, or just lounge, read, and/or sunbathe. On the perimeter of the open grassy area are a some picnic tables (22 of them according to their website), and 3 grills. There is also a large, covered picnic shelter that you can reserve and a small playground (I think there are actually 2 playgrounds, one a bit smaller & tucked in the trees a bit, if I remember correctly). I spotted a public restroom facility near the picnic shelter as well, but didn't utilize them so I can't speak to their cleanliness or whether they were open or not. The open grass area is surrounded by a forested area of huge pine trees, creating a lovely, shady and cool oasis to wander through. There are a number of trails winding there way through the trees, the main ones being several feet wide, with many offshoot trails that are just about a foot wide. Most of the trails are dirt and/or wood chips, but were well maintained and clear when we were there. The trails were also mainly flat so fairly easy to navigate.

The only set back was the restrooms were a bit messy but it was Labor Day weekend so I'm sure that contributes to the mess. Over all would come back.

This park is a total gem--thoughtfully designed, beautifully shaded, and perfect for families. There are plenty of swings and a great variety of play equipment to keep kids engaged for hours. One of the things I appreciated most was the visibility--there's seating thoughtfully placed all around the park, so no matter where your child is playing, you can easily keep an eye on them. There's even a grassy area under the trees where you can lay out a blanket and relax. Even on a hot day, the metal slides stayed cool thanks to the shade, which is a rare and welcome surprise! The kids there were all friendly, and the parents seemed attentive and involved, creating a really positive, safe vibe. My kids had a blast and would've stayed much longer if I hadn't forgotten snacks--lesson learned! We'll definitely be back, this time with a picnic and more time to explore.
